Title: Spam
Post by: John Schmidt on <11-16-10/1136:23>
If you happen to run across a spam posting please do not post a response in said spam thread. It is just one more post that we Mods have to delete. I would strongly urge that you do NOT click on any links within a spam post, it is a very good way to give your computer an ETD (Electronically Transmitted Disease).

I would like to give a special shout out to our regular spammers.

The Russian spammer (I call him Ivan...because Bob just doesn't seem appropriate) who seems to believe that people who come here can actually read Russian.
The medications spammers, who think that we need to put some wood back into our pencils and that we are going to buy our meds online!
The BDSM spammer...really? Gamers are your demographic?
Our newest addition, the slightly off kilter Albanian spammer who requested he be banned lest he spam us more.

 :P

I was going to post in the Albanian's thread, just because he was being so polite about it.

Yeah, he was a friendly sort of spammer. Still, glad you didn't it. ;D

Ack!  I contributed to one of those spam posts.  Sorry about that.  The whole thing reminded me of Pontypool or Snowcrash. "The words are infected!"

Seriously, their translator bot was WAY off.  Funny stuff, really.  Anyway, it won't happen again.

Its enough that my spam report messages get spam filtered in my email now, so I've been missing some humor then Usda.

Hmmmm...not sure that I agree with that view. BDSM is about power transfer...however...it is rumored that some of them wear chainmail bikinis so perhaps I am wrong.  ;D

And the men tight leather.

I like the Russian Spammers. I've stolen a few of their names for Code's contacts. XD

While I would like to thank the community for being on top of our...spam...problem. I would also like to encourage people to be careful about clicking the report button, sometimes we get a new user that just says hi and it is just that and not spam.  ;D

And if you want to brighten a Mod's day, do as I do, say something nice in your report message :)

As has been pointed out elsewhere, ReCaptcha has been cracked, which is why many message boards have been inundated with spam in the last month.

I would suggest again that some other means of user account validation be used, seeing as we keep getting the spam in waves. Literally every time I visit the page, the "latest member" is clearly a spam account, being a long assemblage of random letters for a name.

There should be an e-mail confirmation. We have that on our private gaming board, and it works. Though we work on latest phpBB.

THIS is ironic enough for you to put some filters on?

Well, we have an email confirmation in place already.  Problem is, Spambots get smarter and smarter.  We're talking about putting manual confirmation in place (i.e., the mods have to individually approve accounts, which will suck for anyone who actually wants to just register and get going, but...  It would let us block the obvious spambots.  And since they're usually "fire and forget" accounts, by the time we approve, they'll have moved on even if we accidentally approve a spam account.
