Title: FAB III and Thermobaric weapons in 5E: any details?
Post by: kyoto kid on <03-09-18/1939:26>
...OK two items here.

First of all, Fab III While I know what it effectively does (from 3E) other then some mention and the cost in Street Grimoire I can find no other information on how it works in 5E.  Primarily, there is now a Force Rating assigned against which the base cost is multiplied against per each 1 cubic metre unit.  What does the force rating actually relate to?

Next are Thermobaric  weapons.  I have a character who came into possession of an FAE bomb. but can find no mention on how to gauge it's total yield.   Again in 3E this was spelled out pretty directly based on the liquid measure of the device.  The closest I can find to this in 5E is the atomiser, but by it's description it seems more like a "room fogger" that fills an area with an explosive mist which is then detonated rather than a device that is air dropped and has a dual trigger: one to create a large airborne cloud of misted fuel and the other to ignite that cloud to create a massive shockwave (hence why it is sometimes referred to as the "poor man's nuke").

The size is a standard 208 L drum, so not sure how to treat this.

The closest you'll get to 5E numbers on FAB III would be 4E, in Street Magic, page 127. That has numbers you can convert.

For Thermobaric weapons, the closest you would get would probably be in 4E's WAR! supplement, since that has all the military goodies.

What's a thermobaric weapon?  Sounds intense.

One of the SR missions might have info on FAB III, as it's the only place you'll really encounter it (and it's basically all-but-extinct in the CZ by now, it was basically gone back in 2072) but there's a good chance there's just nothing in 5th Edition.

...yes, the final installment of London Falling.

...thermobaric weapons are FAEs (Fuel Air Explosives) which are "two stage" weapons.  First the containment vessel is breached with a trigger charge that also atomises the fuel into a fine mist, which it then ignited to produce a very powerful shockwave.

Early on through the Posleen War (military Sci-Fi novel series) a F.A.E. is used during an alien invasion.  The people prep a moderately large downtown office building by propping open all in the interior doors, blowing holes between floors, and setting explosive charges on all the external windows.  After that they filled it with flammable gas.  When they finally blew it nearby observers who weren't in the know had assumed someone had detonated a low yield nuke.

...FAEs are nicknamed by some as "the poor man's nuke".
