Title: "Lazy" Susan aka Queen of Diamonds aka Slick Vick -Gambling Face
Post by: FST_Gemstar on <01-15-16/1305:44>
Background:

I don't have a real name for this character yet but her Fake SIN is Susan Bates. Sometimes known as "Lazy" Susan as her primary way of earning an income seems to be just from winning big at the casino. Like most 6th world gamblers (I presume), she looks down on digitized games and mistrusts 'ware at the table as an unfair advantage. Also like most 6th world gamblers, she'll take any advantage she can get to get an edge on the house or other players . Known for her card tricks, staying cool under pressure, and keeping other plays from getting too heated. When she commits to taking a risk though, she stays steely and determined to play it out no matter how the dice or cards play out.  She runs the shadows when she can find a gig that has favorable odds (or at least one she can make more favorable) and loves the thrill of a good run.

Overview:

So I have been wanting to make a gambling character for a long time. Per usual, my initial concept has too many components to work out as well as I would like. Ideally, I wanted a high edge, bioware'd, low resonance technomancer that specialized in face skills but perhaps had some sneaking/matrix capability. I thought this would be cool for a gambler as her bioware would not be easily detectable, would be "lucky," take advantage of computerized games when played, and use sprites for all sorts of tasks (hack someone's glasses to see their hand, helping with calculating odds, boosting gear when needed etc.). It would be difficult to accuse of her cheating, as there is little evidence to her potential tamperings beyond her just being lucky. Her cool card tricks could be used as simple distractions, and use the same skill for pickpocketing/stealing/hiding gear. Alas - I haven't been able to make this character a reality.

Making a technomancer like this in priority/sum-to-ten I just couldn't get to work (though ideas would be helpful if you have any). So I made a mundane version of the character with lots of edge and skills, and a technomancer/changeling version in karma that lacks the edge/skills in favor of some technomancy. I fear the mundane character is more playable, but I would really like a techno-version to work.

Anyone have any ideas of how to bring these two versions together? Anything that could be cut?

As you observed I think you're trying to do to much, Face/Gambler is a great concept, and in the age of online gambling, Techno/Gambler is a great concept. Techno/Face/Gambler is perhaps reaching a little far.
I think High Edge Face Gambler, is the easy way to go. It's natural extension internally, builds well on itself, allows for maximum contact generation and management. It lends itself well to the shadows.

Techno/Gambler I think is slightly more challenging, but could be more interesting, in that it's not really been done much. It allows you to  explore some fairly unexplored avenues of play.

If only there was a Priority D option for Technomancers.... I'd take  even Resonance 1 and 0 Free Complex forms....

I used to Bartend at a Casino, so I am having no trouble imagining your character.

I once helped a girl, who was stealing from her job to pay for her gambling habit, move out of her apartment at midnight for 500 bucks. (I won that Negotiation Roll)

For this Character Build..
I would go Human for Race (Especially if you want Technomancer.)  Might want to consider Adept.. Max out Edge (8, with Lucky)
I would use Point Build/Karma Gen especially if you are taking Jack of All Trades, and not worry about getting all but a few skills maxed out.
would also recommend these qualities: In Debt, Liar, Poor Self Control (Compulsive Gambling), Insomnia, Lucky!
Worry less about Cyberware/Bioware, until after playing maybe..

...Wait! How can be Queen of Diamonds? Leela, Queen of Diamonds.

...Serbia Intel Bureau says so. I third most wanted by them for make Big Badaboom. Blow up bridges, comm towers, command precincts, supply dumps, hahahaha
....

(OK Leela, kid be a good little saboteur and go play with your C-12 now.)

Seriously, an interesting concept. With a few tweaks, she would make an interesting covert operative.

a few suggestions as I've played a straight Face character.

For the Priority build I'd definitely swap Attributes with Metatype and go with Human. Having a 7 Edge is nice, but 5 is still pretty good and as this character is a mundane you can always increase the attribute with Karma later.

A higher Etiquette pool would be wise as it is basically the ability to "blend in" to the local scene.
Negotiation (Bargaining) would definitely be a good choice. If she's going to try to be a little more subtle, then Seduction might not be a bad option instead.  I had a Covert Ops character back in 3e with a high CHA, a chemical gland, and Seduction as a concentration. Sent a more than few of the "oppos" to the hereafter with her "kiss of death".

I'd drop the Hawkeye quality as it is incompatible with any electronic or implant based visual enhancements. This way you can get a smartlink implant which will boost your Pistol's pools by 2 and add 2 to the accuracy. with any weapon that has an internal Smartlink  You can put vision enhancements in glasses, or contacts at a reasonable cost (nothing says you can't wear both glasses and contacts either)  The Vision Enhancement 1 - 3 modification also increases the character's mental limit for visual perception by its rating (I usually put a couple levels on contacts along with either Vision Mag or Flare Comp). As you are Hard Targets is out I'd consider the tinted contacts.

I'd also consider the Tetrachromatic Vision Genemnod (8,000, 0.1 ESS)  which allows for seeing in dim light as if it were bright light and adds three dice to your visual perception pool.

Another good implant to consider is a Voice Modulator rating 4 cyber implant, particularly since it appears she will be impersonating people. This not only lets you record voices for mimicry purposes, but adds 4 dice to your impersonation pool.  There is also a bioware version (Vocal Range Expander) but it is more expensive though it does add +1 to your social limit when speaking.

As she has no Logic based skills you can save some major resources by dropping one or even both levels of Cerebral Booster.

I'd Swap out the Fichetti Executive Action for a Predator or better yet a Guardian (which is capable of firing a 3 round burst), both also come with an internal Smartlink system. As the character is a pacifist, I would imagine she would be prone to using non lethal ammo like S & S or Gel Rounds.  For those you want the weapon to have a decent base DV as they impose a negative modifier.

A good concealable backup pistol would be an Ares Lightfire 75 which has a built in silencer.

I'd dump the Remington Suppressor (since the character has no skill with it) and get a Yamaha Pulsar taser as it is Semi Auto and thus takes advantage of your Pistol's specialisation.

I'd also ditch the combat knife as she only has a Strength of 2.  If you need to have some fighting skill when things get up close and personal try to free up two points for Unarmed combat (Cyber Implant) and get a Shock Hand. She would then have a dice pool of 8 with a DV of 9S (e) and AP of -5.  it would also fit with the Pacifist quality.  My Face (who also has a STR of 2)  has one and it has been rather effective for her as she is rather creative and often subtle in how she uses it.

As part of her gear pack a couple jars of Nano Paste disguise or better yet, Altskin with the Shifter option for the hands and face would be useful the latter adding +1 to her limit for Disguise and Impersonation.

I'd also get a better primary commlink (at least a device rating 4/FW 4 if not better) unless you want your cyber, electronic gear, and weapons to be easy bait for deckers.

These are just a few possible suggestions.

Might want to consider being Adept..

I would say get Edge 7! You're a Gambler!

Thanks folks.

The mundane version is a Human w/ Edge 7.  Could not get close to that in point buy, so had to fandangle an elf changling to get something similar.

The logic was a carryover over from the technomancer build, more Logic = more sprites. But if going mundane or adept, Logic can be dropped. I guess she would never get enough skills in hacking/computer post-char gen to really be any good at matrix searches or getting any kind of marks.

I'll back up and say I'm over-conceptualizing and over-assuming and giving myself quite the challenge. I wanted her to be cyber-free and drug-free, as perhaps some higher class (or higher payout) casinos or tournaments would check for cyberware and drugs.  Bioware is difficult to detect so I thought that would be the safer way to go. Maybe I'm over thinking it, but perhaps there would be some astral security looking for any unfair magic too. Adept powers would be more difficult to spot that straight spellcasting, but it would be hard to hide she is awakened. I liked the idea of going technomancer (as I always do), as she can sit down with no commlink, no cyberware, and no magic, and still have sprites help her out with calculating odds, cheating cheaters, getting personal information on other players/staff, etc. It's probably a character type that is not fit for standard shadowrun character design, but I wanted to give it a go.

I don't want to go adept because adepts always win!! I like the challenge of a technomancer, but for lower resonance technomancers that aren't matrix specialists (again, my favorites), adepts can often turn out "better" from the start as their attributes don't have to be as spread out and could get a D priority.

If you want to work as a technomancer with less RES you absolutely need to maximize your Compiling and Registering pools.

The "TMs as a pet class" thread is a good place to start.

You could get Form Factor Commlink (Poker Chip or something) and Faraday Pocket Armor Accessory. Your Sprites would be almost completely undetectable in your pocket till you take the link out to play.

There is going to be new Technomancer book out soon, so hopefully they will get some love. atm Registering is more important than Compiling. You could take compiling a few levels lower than Registering, and I would Specialize a Sprite. To Register.

Bushw4cker: Good call on the form factor commlink!

I do hope the Technomancer book gives some nicer options....

Marcus: I guess I'm not opposed to going Gambler/Technomancer.... I am just not sure her matrix chops are going to cut it as a primary matrix specialists, unless, as you say, there is some unique avenues of play. Perhaps going face is too much, but if a team is faceless and has a decker,  some decent Con and Negotiation with some matrix support might be more appealing.

Whiskey: I hear ya. Unfortunately this character as currently conceived is too spread to play a really successful pet class technomancer. The max level technomancer I expect her to compile/register is a level 4 (and that's taking physical drain) and she is not going to get high enough logic to keep a big stable. These aren't going to be super hacker sprites, but can do matrix searches, data hiding/protecting, and some diagnostics. Maybe some hacking of an unprotected low level device if it comes to it.

I'm trying one more build as a dwarf in point buy... Might have to shelve this concept until the new book might make it more possible, or stick with a mundane.

Maybe I was overcomplicating:

a Priority:

D Human
A Attributes
C Technomancer
B Skills
E Resources

w/ 10 karma going into strength and 10 karma going into nuyen would yield something like:

Attributes:
Body: 3
Agility: 5
Reaction: 3
Strength: 2
Charisma: 6
Intuition: 5
Logic: 4
Willpower 5
Edge: 5
Res: 3
P/M/S Limits: 4/6/8

Skills:
Compiling: 6
Con: 4 (Seduction)
Negotiation: 6 (Bargaining)
Perception: 4
Registering: 6 (Machine)
Software: 3 (Resonance Veil)
Stealth Group: 5
Unarmed: 2 (Touch Attacks)

Resources: up to 26k to spend

No bioware and dice pools seem low... but perhaps a character to grow into? Contacts/Qualities/Knowledge skills will still be around, and she passes the no 'ware/magic/drugs test I put on her...  She can still get an essence worth of bioware and keep Resonance at 2 in the future. I don't know... Perhaps "Lazy" Susan is destined for the Contacts/NPC pile, where she can be more narratively interesting than practical.

Edit: Below is a full draft. 7 karma remaining.

If you want to work as a technomancer with less RES you absolutely need to maximize your Compiling and Registering pools.

The "TMs as a pet class" thread is a good place to start.

There is going to be new Technomancer book out soon, so hopefully they will get some love. atm Registering is more important than Compiling. You could take compiling a few levels lower than Registering, and I would Specialize a Sprite. To Register.
Im not getting my hopes up. As far as I'm concerned if TMs are meant to be real PCs they need to have analogues of basically everything mages can do (brings back widgets and streams) and they need that stuff in the core rule book, not five years later.

....the one issue with any matrix oriented character would be that most casinos would likely have their own matrix overwatch as well as noise barriers to prohibit hacking from outside. I wouldn't even discount the possibility if, for security reasons, they could even have an isolated hardwired system/host of their own that is not connected to the WWM to manage all internal operations, separate from their normal matrix connection for video feeds of sports events & such.

Many casinos would most likely also have magical security as well to at the very, least spot awakened patrons and keep a wary eye on them.

I could actually see a casino being tougher to crack than a bank.  In some ways one might be better off dealing with the Star or KE than casino security considering the likelihood of ties to syndicates which are much more ruthless.

I would think as long as the 'ware one has does not have an affect the odds at tables or machines, I don't see it being an issue though one would be required to turn all wireless functions off on entering or be forced to wear an inhibitor.. One particular implant I can see causing trouble would be the Math SPU (card counting, probability analysis), however, I'm sure that is something they would routinely scan for.

I would also expect a casino to have the best MAD scanners available as well as members of their security teams with a high perception (possibly aided by gear or even eye implants) who are trained to spot and deal with concealed weapons or any items that may be used to alter the odds.

I think that's a much nicer version, I think your character are going to make major jump just as soon as we get the techno book.

Thanks Bush, Kyoto, Marcus, and Whiskey for the feedback!

I'll post one more version for now. She's a dwarf changling in point buy. Decided to give her some cyberware that looks legit enough (at least not restricted), so that if a mage assenses that she has less essence than the mage, the mage will be able to see the 'ware in question and maybe not give it more thought, instead of wondering why a seemingly 'wareless person has lower essence and start checking for signs of bioware. I also liked astral hazing for this regard, as it keeps her from being assessed as effectively. I brought her essence down below 2 so that astral hazing only has a 2 meter range, as to give a team's magician space to work if needed. She took Glamour/Distinctive Style, but could get by without it if it would bring too much attention. I figure she wins enough but is well liked enough in her more typical hangouts and would be recognizable anyway. Edge is decent for a dwarf. She'll have to pick up some skills post char-gen (etiquette and escape artist are up there). She'll also have to learn complex forms after char gen (or have her disguise skills wait till later) Most armor fitted with shock frills to stun folks who may try to apprehend her for anything illicit and give her a chance to make a getaway. Has drugs to use on runs if needed but she can only handle infrequent use. In all, she is able to use some edge for bigger social/palming/sprite rolls when needed, and still have some edge to help get her out of a jam. She can use Diagnostics to help sneak and for social tests when used on her various armor. Contacts/Knowledge Skills same as earlier.

I did also want to explore 6th world gambling/casino security, to help get better ideas of how to make a character, if not settings/contacts that have to deal with gambling/casinos.

I was looking for source material re: casino security, and all I found was some info in the  Plots and Paydata from the alphaware box (pg 54). There is some bits about gambling in the 2070s, but not much:

Looks like the cheaper casinos/gambling dens have soundproofed walls that are made with cheaper material. Without physical currency, security is less focused on burglary and more on cheating. Security includes cameras, security guards, a "centralized matrix security device" (I guess a host), but with each game running as its own device with its own Patrol IC. Astral security is probably lighter and probably provided by an offsite projecting mage who will materialize to the security team to let them know if there is any magic trouble.

This is a little different from what I had in mind. Here is what I was thinking re: Shadowrunner important security in 6th world legal casinos:

'Ware/Gear:
I was assuming that casinos and gamblers would be anti-ware, but at the same time, 'ware has a place in a lot of popular sports that people bet on and enough people are chromed that having a chrome free environment would seem too discriminatory if not unprofitable. So perhaps specific kinds of cyberware would be scanned for  with MAD and cyberware scanners and if detected, would be required to be turned off. Definitely illegal 'ware and restricted 'ware w/o a license would be a no go. I agree Kyoto Kid that Math SPUs would be frowned upon, as well as perhaps attention co-processors and skillsofts. I might think that Imagelink/soundlink, commlinks/decks, particularly implanted ones, would also be disallowed, but AR/commlinks are so commonplace and are so useful in casinos (AROs about big jackpots, more spectacular AR decore, etc.), they must be allowed in. I suppose cameras would be checking for any active use of commlinks for gambling advantage purposes, or maybe part of entrance with a commlink is that you invite a mark from security so they have more access to your matrix goings on (but this seems unlikely too). Would running silently be a giveaway? If 'ware/gear icons are supposed to be either off or easily spottable, a matrix perception test that comes up with icons running silently might alert security to a big issue. Any hacking done with a non-silent wireless device that fails a roll would have the host mark the device.

Security would also be looking out for illicit drugs, and perhaps some of the bigger tournaments would require drug tests. However, this feels odd to me too, as it is a way to get your DNA catalogued real easy and a big giveaway to anyone using a fake sin.

Are there any other legal 'ware gear that would be questionable in a casino? How would casinos deal?

Matrix:

I assumed that each casino would run on a powerful host with game/devices slaved to it. As the access points to individual games would be protected (either by physical security/employees or remotely with camera), directly connecting with your datajack would be very difficult and wireless hackers would have to deal with powerful host defenses and probably many patrolling and worse IC. However, casinos might invite marks so patrons can access more of the cool AR content and matrix enabled games. This could get hackers, especially technomancers, entrance into a host where their sprites can then help with some dirty work. Skin link would be less conspicuous for things like slot machines where there is touch devices and may be a way to subvert matrix security. I presume a spider and other matrix professionals would be onsight to monitor network security, as well as IC.

As mentioned above, regular hacking of a casino house would be difficult, so a technomancer may have the best options for potentially doing casino matrix work with their Resonance powers and sprites. However, hacking potential may be more for hacking other patrons. Is someone's cybereyes/visionware hackable to see their hand in a poker game? That could be useful. Is checking people's bank account statements doable through their commlink? Perhaps knowing other gambler's pocket depth so to speak could also be useful.

Magic:

I thought casinos would have onsite magic security, but I suppose Magic really is supposed to be pretty rare and many places wouldn't bother with 24/7 onsite security. Patrolling astrally projecting mages/spirits would do the trick. These mages might also be able to detect previously missed cyberware, bioware, and potentially technomancers/geneware/nanotech. It seems assensing is a big no no, and any patron who slips into astral is going to be picked up by security. Spellcasting/spirits are going to be seen pretty easily too. Active foci are going to light up, but are there foci that are going to be helpful for gambling that security would be pissed about (perhaps eidatic sense memory? Super Perception?)? Passive adept powers would probably be ok. Is the only real workaround for magical security Masking or Flexible Signatures? I kind of liked the changeling negative quality of Astral Hazing here, it's rare, but any astrally projecting mage assensing nearby would get a dice pool hit to their assensing tests. Anything else to change a background count without raising too much suspicion?

Is there anything I'm missing about casino security? What about ways to do some more covert work not directly against the house, but other gamblers? How would less illicit casinos/gambling dens organize? Would magic/boosted 'ware be fairer game? What about for things like underground poker tournaments or sports betting?

Woot, finally feel those years working at casino was not all for nothing!!

On Casino security now.. First off, they take it VERY seriously. Cameras everywhere. You have an ID badge checked by security when you enter. It has your photo. You have to scan it at every door you use. The casino provides you with clothes. Pants have no pockets. You have to clear your hands if you touch money. (Clap, wave them to show they are. Empty.) Employees not allowed in Casino when not working. I went through same Background Check that police have to go through. The chips over $5 all have RFID tags. (Just call them RF tags where I was). I was always amazed by how quickly security IDed someone that had been Banned from Casino who was trying to gamble.

Example how tight security is: I got a write-up one time for not scanning my ID at the money room door.  The. Write-up had frame by frame pictures of me showing me not scanning in with my badge.

They keep track of everything. Even the Liqour (I was a bartender) There are some bottles, but the most popular and rail drink shots are measured out by a program in register linked to dispenser.

Cheating.. No one steals from the Casino. But Players steal from other players all the time. The only players that actually make money at the casino,  are the poker players. Where you are playing against other players.

Casinos 2075...

I am going to think about this one. Some more then post again.

Initially I was going to say anybody with Astral Hazing Quality, would be asked to leave the Casino.

I would think almost all, but the smallest casinos, would have a mage and necromancer on staff at All times.  There would be watchers, spirits, etc. Patrolling at all times.

It Can't Be Done! Casinos don't Exist in 2075!!
Title: Re: "Lazy" Susan aka Queen of Diamonds aka Slick Vick -Gambling Face
Post by: Bushw4cker on <01-17-16/1240:05>
but if they did exist..

Anyone entering a Casino would have to have a Legit SIN, and they would have the best authenticating systems money could buy. Maybe the areas where the low bets are being placed you could get away with Fake SIN, but High-Roller areas, you would need Legit SIN.

Any patterns.. Like you winning a lot against the house... You would be marked... and everything you did would be looked at under a microscope, astral sight, techno vision (If they have that..Crosses fingers for next source book), ect..

If you won a jackpot at the casino I worked at, you would need Social Security Card or Passport and another ID to claim jackpot.

The more I think about it, as long as you're not stealing from the casino.. you could probably get away with more than you think.. with like magic, ware, ect..

As long as they are not losing money..

In 2075 your going to have a lot famous people, a lot of whom are going to have a LOT of ware (Urban Brawl Players, SImsense Stars).

NO Casino is EVER going to turn away anyone Famous.

Where I worked, they were treated like Royalty.

Yeah... direct stealing from a casino is going to be a really tough sell for any shadowrunning team.

Anyone playing the system is going to have to win at more underground gambling dens (perhaps illegal ones that allow less legal forms of gambling [endangered paracritter fights, duels, super high stakes poker, etc]) with worse infrastructure and security, and/or focus on beating other gamblers through social skills, matrix work, or plain sneaking/stealing.

Technomancers might still have some tricks against the house, like resonance veiling results of SIN checks or 'ware checks. It is a dangerous game though.

Watch Oceans 11.. if you haven't seen it yet.

It would actually be easier to steal someone's kid from a Casino (A lot of them have daycares.) Than it would be to steal a $5 chip from the Casino..

...and now I'm sad thinking about that.. :'(

Please check out a few of my other posts, I'm trying to get some feedback on a new game of SR I'm running with new players..

In general stealing from a casino is would not be the point. A casino mastermind plot is cool, and it could work for a couple games, but eventually it has to conclude. But for a more sustained game it should be fairly easy to come up with Casino related runs, that are not directly related to robbing whatever casino your looking at.

All the chips are RFID tagged and valueless outside of their casino.  Forging chips would be comparable to forging SINs.

Casinos already don't allow smartphones at the tables. In Shadowrun, pretty much all electronics including cyber would be excluded from the tables at least, and likely the casino in general.  Private games could be set up with their own rules, but the House takes its cut regardless.

Also, no magic.  Casinos are big in the NAN, trust me when I say they know about magic cheating.
Title: Re: "Lazy" Susan aka Queen of Diamonds aka Slick Vick -Gambling Face

The gambling den in the Plots and Paydata seems a little underwhelming in terms of security and doesn't seem so realistic. So legit casinos might as well be a run on Zurich Orbital for most shadowrunners. So gambling and gambling establishments in Shadowrunner range are probably going to be the not legal kind: Underground fighting tournaments, underground poker tournaments, underground racing (etc.), pop-up "casinos" that are more of a one night party than anything else, bars/clubs with  a secret backroom for gambling, maybe even "illegal"  or temporary matrix hosts for a Matrix locale (though I don't think hosts work like this...). These places would not be Corp run or govt. sanctioned, but more under syndicate or even less secure under gang control. There would be security, but it's not like they could bring in legal/corp enforcement. Security could be bought off, rules could be more flexible, etc. as long as the house still expects to win. Shadowrunners could excel more in these arenas, there may be more runs and missions that could involve them, and lots of politics/intrigue/fighting that could be potentially happening at any moment.

If you wanna run the casino heist of course there is a way to do it. It doesn't matter where it is, this is Shadowrun, you can find a way rob it. There still have got to be traditional casinos in various places, and like I said that's totally cool idea for a couple games.
