There's just so many stories here to read through, i dont know where to start.

I assume there's a lot of good stuff, a lot of crap, and a few GEMS.

anyone got any recommendations for the gems?

Allow me to add to the chorus of people saying "Critias".  AKA Russell Zimmerman.  He's the one who wrote the introduction in the 5th edition core book, "Another Night, Another Run".
I'm Madpath Moth on reddit (and other sites).  Feel free to PM me errata questions!
Jeeze.  It would almost sound stupid until you realize we're talking about an immortal elf clown sword fighting a dragon ghost in a mall.

Actually the work your referencing was Patrick Goodman, Critas writes about elves and hard luck detectives such as Neat

You're thinking of Patrick's enhanced fiction piece, Another Rainy Night.

Totally different story.

Critias.  :P  Now go blush; you deserve it.

My suggestion is, to an extent, start with this: The Board's Most-Read Fiction Threads.  (That's just this thread, sorted by most views.)  Many/most of those in the top dozen are stellar, though a few IMO stink; I will note that Rook and Angels (Critias) are good, as is the collective-fiction (aka 'we ran this on Shadowland Six back in the day') 'There's Nothing Free In This World', co-written by Critias, Crimsondude, and about four or so others.  (Not me, alas.)

Of the newer ones, I will suggest Midwestern Shadows, by SlowDeck.
