So, I'm building a long series of adventures (to be publicly released, likely for free), and I have need of an NPC that fits two requirements:

- Was an active, well-known magic user (in the shadows or otherwise) in the 2050's

- Hasn't been heard from in a while (like at all)

I can make up an NPC to fill this role, of course, but this seems like a good opportunity to make a nod to an old-school canonical character. Perhaps someone who was involved with Dunkelzahn or Harlequin?

This adventure has done a lot of reaching into Shadowrun's history and making it relevant, and I'd like to get in one more good shot at that.

Does anyone know a character that might fit here? Links to some reading material relating to the character would be appreciated as well.

There's always Sam 'Twist' Verner from the first 3 Shadowrun books. I don't know if you'll have any copyright issues, though.

Sally Tsung might count. She was directly and indirectly involved with a lot of big events, and was one of the first named mages in Shadowrun canon (in the intro fiction for Shadowrun, First Edition). She pretty much vanished after c. 2057.

How active do you want?  The Eternal Mary Sue of Ryan Mercury was trained by the Big D and as a Drake has been messing with all sorts of draco-like magics.

If it involves him getting a bit bloody that might be worth watching. :D
Do you believe in a greater WIRELESS, an Invisible(WiFi) All Seeing(detecting those connected- at least if within 100'), All Knowing(all online data) Presence that we can draw upon for Wisdom(downloads & updates), Strength (wifi boni) and Comfort (porn) or do you turn your back on it  (Go Offline)?

Trained by Big D is good... but based on Street Legends he's been active more recently than is compatible with the story. (SL mentions him currently being active, in fact)

The best sort of character would be one that was well known (to players) back in the day and just forgotten. I'm going to try and track down a 1st edition book and see if Sally Tsung might fit the bill. Being from the first party sourcebook rather than novels, there's slightly less concern of ligitation (if anyone is protecting the IP it's Catalyst, and if Catalyst has any interest in taking it down, I'm already using Shadowrun itself, so it's less likely to cause trouble), AND it's more likely to be recognized by old-school SR players. So all other things being equal, a mage from into fiction of the first edition sourcebook would be the best choice.

The other potential problem with using Twist is that he's lost his magic, at least by the end of the Secrets of Power trilogy. Not sure if that matters to what you're planning. His girlfriend at the end of the series, Kathryn (sp) Hart, was a magician well-regarded in the shadows; I don't recall hearing anything about her after about 2053 or so. There's a few other magicians mentioned in the course of the series but most are either minor players like Ricky Ratboy, or major figures like Professor Sean Laverty.

Doctor Raven from the "Wolf & Raven" stories might work for you as well.

Tommy Talon or Serrin Shamander. Both statted and profiled as to 2073 in Street Legends. Talon has dealt with far higher-profile elements like having face to faces with Lofwyr and fighting ... I can't remember if they were blood mages or flat out Horror constructs alongside Harlequin and Aina.

Both 2050s badasses who disappeared in the 2060s and whose "returns" in the 70s still mean they're basically alive but super shrouded in the shadows of the shadows.

Tommy Talon will fit the bill, I think. Thanks!

I'd definitely recommend him.

Enjoy!

Rikki Ratboy was killed offscreen in Sprawl Survival Guide. Laverty is an IE or at least a spike elf. Though he's been way, WAY too quiet.
