Title: [IC] The Tell-Tale Heart
Post by: Devil on <09-28-10/2211:32>
It's dark out now. The city's lights illuminating the snow as it falls from night skies to blanket the asphalt parking lot below. It's a normal tavern, a bit run down but the staff are nice enough for this part of town. A big red neon sign out front reads "RESTAURANT", it's warm glow reflecting off of a few vehicles. Smoke and old jazz fills the mood lit room.

It's been a long day. The job went nice and easy. Just a security gig. The usual trade-off of stolen goods for cred chips. High risk and low pay, but business has been slow. It's always slow in East Redmond, seems like. Every crook and runner around here has dreams of making that big score, but it never seems to come along.

The three of you sit in a padded booth, gathered around a table, talking as you wait. Jim is supposed to be here any time now with the cred. Says he's got big news. You haven't known him long, but so far he seems pretty on the level. Jimmy "Nine Fingers" is a fence, as well as your contact for the job.

An older black gentlemen in a sweater approaches the table, asking you if you know what you want to order and offering a warm smile. Behind him you can see Jim unceremoniously bursting through the door as he awkwardly flips his scarf back into place. He squints and surveys the diner, searching for you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
((OOC: Some info. You've worked together before once or twice, but this was the first time all of you have worked together at the same time. Until today you had never had the chance to speak much, so you do not know eachother well.

If you have any questions at all I'd be happy to answer them.

Just know that there are no tracks in this game. I wont punish you for doing something I don't expect. Just try to roleplay your characters somewhat realistically. And remember if I do something wrong you should call me on it.))

Belial looked up at the waiter. "Beer, whatever you have that is cold." He looked a Jim and shook his head he would let the idiot search a little bit before he called him over. He looked over to the others. "What do you think Jim's news is and how much will it pay?" He kept on eye on Jim the whole time.

Kali watching Jim, I'll have a rum and soda.

Jim's news had better be big Belial. I am tired of small. Want to move on.

"No joke Chummer, its been months since I've done real biz. This small time drek is starting to wear on me. Plue," Belial motioned to his cyberarm, I've still got to pay of this new chrome."

Santero looks up at the waiter, "lo de siempre compai....i'll have a cuba libre"
Once the waiter leaves, he leans into Belial who's sitting next to him in the booth and puts his arm around him, his face widening into an infectious grin.

"Coņo meng, looks like if we don' get paid soon my man Belial is gonna get a li'tul visit from da repo-man"

.....his eyes simultaneously focusing across the room on Jimmy.

Jim, we are over here bro. Come and join us.

"Drek no I didn't get it on credit. I bought it full. But it hurt my bank account. A guy has to eat and I'll be damned if I'm going back to an all soy diet." Looks over to Jim. "You better have something good for us Chummer. Plus, like a repo-man would get past the door. I know where to hide bodies."

Santero, Jimmy's aura is varied. It's difficult to read as he is experiencing both positive and negative emotions. Fear, hope, desire, caution?

"Good choices. That'll just be a few minutes."

Jimmy slides into the booth, pushing into Kali and forcing her to slide over and make more room.

"Hey guys."

He looks around at the three of you quickly, then turns in his seat, calling out loudly "Hey gran-pa, I'll have the irish hot chocolate! And don't skimp of the whipped cream this time!"

"Comin' right up, kid." The old man shakes his head, muttering something to himself.

Turning back to look at you, Jimmy lights up a smoke and puffs hard on it several times.

"So I've got some good news and some bad news. What you wanna hear first?" He taps his cyberware index finger on the table anxiously.

Kali nearly pushes him out of the booth altogether, but he repositions himself without complaint, then blows smoke at her in playful retaliation.

"Hey, easy, tough guy. My boss wont let me pay yah until you go an' see 'em. He's got business. Important business. The kind the could be worth alot t' yah, know what I mean? He wants to see yahz all tonight."

Once Santero finishes up his rum and coke he tells Jimmy and the group that he'll make it to the meet on his own. Santero then walks outside and steps into an alley right next to Restaurant and when he's sure no one is looking, he closes his eyes and opens his mind to the Orishas, whispering ancient Yoruba prayers punctuated with a smattering of spanish . He calls out to Shango through the depths of his storming mind....

"Iwo ni Oluwa Awo Ara ati Manamana....necesito ganar para poderte alabar, mandame un mensajero veloz y derecho...Mo juba awo Shango!"
(translation for GM: "You are the Owner of the Mysteries of Thunder and Lightning, I need to make money to be able to worship you, please send me a messenger who's quick and straight...I humble myself before the mysteries of Shango")

[OOC: Summon Guardian Force 3. Guardian's roll 3d6.hits(5)=1 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2711009/). Santero's roll: Summoning (Sp. Guardian) 7 + Magic 6 = 13 13d6.hits(5)=3 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2711013/). 2 tasks. Drain resistance 9d6.hits(5)=3 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2711016/). Drain 2S ---> 0.
While possessed Santero can move 100m/turn = 2km/min. His body would be 6 so he can run 12 minutes without fatiguing, so that's 24 km.]

Through closed eyes Santero sees several hunters darting through the tall grass of the Serengeti, their bows strung over their shoulders. He tries to get their attention, and one them turns around startled. The young hunter smiles at Santero and says to him "My names Ngabou....i'm going your way anyways, I can walk with you....my home is two villages down the road." Santero smiles back at him knowingly.

When Santero opens his eyes he chides himself for asking Shango's help for such a mundane task, but when it comes to running the shadows, it's always best to be on the safe side. He rubs his throbbing temples, but smiles when he sees the young hunter's glowing form hovering in front of him in the astral plane, and he tells him through their mental link: "Thank you Ngabou, first we must follow a man to get where we must go." Ngabou nods.

[OOC: Santero's first request will be for the Guardian spirit to possess his body and use its Movement power to follow Jimmy's car to the meet. Spirit's possession test: Forcex2 + Prepared Vessel 6 =12 12d6.hits(5)=4 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2711034/). Santero's body resists with Intuition 3 + Will 5 + Wound Modifier -1 = 7 7d6.hits(5)=2 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2708718/).... So the spirit is able to possess Santero.]

Santero, looks down at the grimy back-alley ground, his body shudders for a moment and once the convulsing subsides, he slowly looks up, his face painted with an entirely new expression, his eyes glowing a faint blue while a thin mist of mana slowly rises from the shoulders of his trenchcoat.

Belial looks at Jimmy. "Alright, professional it is. I'll take my bike and follow you, I don't like being stranded anywhere." Belial gave Jimmy a reassuring look. I would prefer you not getting killed by my actions."

I will follow on my bike Jimmy. Easier to move on after wards and get stuff done. Thanks for the drinks. I am ready when ever you are.

After a short drive towards towards downtown Redmond, you turn off, going into a more low key residential area. Apartment complexes tower above you. The four of you meet up on a dark, snow-covered sidewalk, outside one such building. Jimmy makes use of a mag-card to get the doors open, motioning you inside.

"C'mon. I'm freezing my balls off."

The lobby is fairly luxurious when compared to many in this part of town. The red carpet has few stains, and fresh image paint on the walls, displaying rolling waves with overlaid advertisements. Those of you without good filters get spammed a little. You enter the elevator and a soothing female voice begins its pitch. Jimmy talks right over it, as if he doesn't hear it.

"Alright, so Mr. O'Leary is a pretty strange guy. Don't mention anything that might set him off, okay?"

Before Santero enters the elevator, he stops and touches his necklace of cowry shells while closing his eyes, bringing the little medal of St. Michael to his lips as you catch a glimpse of a wispy plume of mana flow from the kiss to the pendant.

Once he continues into the elevator you notice his gait has aquired an uncanny briskness to it.

[OOC: casting an increase reflexes F3 spell and putting it on his sustaining focus: Magic 6 + Spellcasting (sp. health) 7 = 13 13d6.hits(5)=3 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2711930/). Drain resist: Cha 4 + Will 5 = 9 9d6.hits(5)=2 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2711933/).

Jim runs a hand over the back of his neck, thinking for a moment. He pushes the stop button, halting the elevator

Belial: Strange how? Jimmy, it sounds like we might need a little more intel on this meet.

Kali: What kinds of things set this guy off? You are being very vague. Will a smile set him off a frown or something more than that?

Jim runs a hand over the back of his neck, thinking for a moment. He pushes the stop button, temporarily halting the elevator

Jimmy: A smile would probably cause you a whole lot more trouble... He's a psycho, but he's real crafty. Don't show any weakness. Don't joke around. And for the love of god, try not to piss him off. Do what I do. Put all your feelings aside... and just think about the Nuyen."

His finger hovers over the elevator's control panel and he looks back at the three of you.
"Square?"

The elevator reaches it's pinnacle at the fifth floor and the door opens to reveal short hallway with a few doors along it. That little hall leads to an office, of which the centerpiece is a large antique desk, though, there is other furniture and a couple of doors in there as well. A fair amount of effort has gone into the decor. Behind the desk there is a glass wall with another door leading out to the balcony. The balcony's view is terrible. The only thing you can see are the backs of other buildings.

Mr. O'Leary, a large man with a completely bald head stares out the glass in the office, facing away from you in a thoughtful pose. After sluggishly emerging from one of the side rooms right next to you, a butler drone begins speaking to you, causing the tall figure to turn around and lock his wrathful eyes on you. Even from here you can see that his teeth have been replaced with metallic shark-like teeth, giving him a frightening visage.

Drone: "Welcome Mr. Sullivan. Mr. O'Leary is expecting you. Right this way please."

It turns around and begins to slowly lead you into the office. As you enter you notice another humanoid off to the side of the room, previously hidden from view. the being has some kind of dermal sheathing, ocular implants that make no attempt at a human appearance, and a ventilator. In addition to carrying several visible firearms and grenades, it has some kind of modern looking sword on it's back. Probably some kind of bodyguard.

Drone: "Mr. Sullivan is here to see you, sir."

Jimmy (Nervous):"Eh.. I brung 'em just like you asked, boss. Can I go now?"

Mr. O'Leary approaches you, looking each of you over carefully. After a moment he waves Jimmy away as if he were nothing. Jim turns to leave immediately. The butler drone slowly leaves the room as well.

Mr. O'Leary: "Sure don't look like much. Tell me, why should I trust something like this to a couple of street punks like you? Huh?"

((00C: Not a great post, even for me... If you need any clarifications please feel free to ask me.))

[OOC: That post was really good!]
"Because we're careful, discrete and we're good at getting a job done meng..."

Santero shifts his perception into the Astral plane and he's going to try and assense O'Leary and the bodyguard's auras.

[OOC: I'm going to call my bound F6 Guardian spirit from his home plane and have him hang out in the astral.
Assensing O'Leary: Assensing 3 + Intuition 3 = 6 6d6.hits(5)=2 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2715475/)....Assensing Bodyguard: 6 6d6.hits(5)=3 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2715480/)....so I should be able to see where they each have cyberware, whether they're awakened or not.]

[OOC: If I find that they're both mundane, as a demonstration of my power i'm going to cast control actions on the bodyguard F7, drain 3P. Resist Will 5 + Cha 4=9 9d6.hits(5)=5 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2715497/)...no drain. Casting test, Magic 6 + Spellcasting 5 = 11 11d6.hits(5)=4 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2715487/). The bodyguard resists with Willpower...so you'll have to roll to see if I succeed. If I do I'm going to make him grab one of his own grenades and pull the pin while keeping the arming lever pressed down while he walks toward both of us and then i'll tell O'Leary to just cool it and if he cuts the bull and starts to talk fast we can get on with business....If one of them's awakened though, i'm not going to cast anything.]

((Neither of them are mundane. You have difficulty seeing past the bodyguard's dermal sheathing, but you can tell that he's pretty loaded up with cyber and bioware. He may have also had extensive repair to his skeleton at some point. There's alot of non-biological material in this guy. Alot. His astral presence is weak.
O'leary has a unusual heavy cyberarm and shoulder hidden under synthskin. He also has a series of muscle replacements and some kind of complicated wiring running through his system as well. Not to mention the metal teeth. If you want to anything more specific then you'll need to make some related knowledge skill checks.
Also Inca, these are slightly more complex cylindrical grenades. They are either armed or they are not. There's an example of one on the cover of arsenal.)

Kali finds one of the chairs in front of O'leary's desk, making herself at home. He is currently too distracted to give it any thought.

"Yeah, yeah. We'll see, we'll see."

He raises a finger.

"One chance."

"You get one chance to prove yourselves."

He walks over the to the glass, looking out. His back is turned to you, but the mysterious warrior watches you closely with those round, camera like eyes.

"There was a truck.. that had something important to me on it. It never made it where it was going."

"I'll give you a precise location, where we lost contact with the couriers. Alls you gotta do is find the truck and get the package. If there isn't no package there then you gotta find it. That too complex for you?"

He looks over his shoulder at you, arching a brow.

O'leary lets out a derisive laugh, aimed at Santero.

"Can you believe this guy?", he asks the mysterious warrior, who just silently looks at you with those emotionless eyes.

"No, no, no. The job is getting the package. Thirty thousand in sticks when you return it with its contents intact. You do this good then maybe I'll have another job for you."

"Is there any problem with that?", he asks with an arched brow, reading your faces.

From his demeanor you can tell that he might snap and you may lose the job if you answer incorrectly.

There is a soft sigh from Kali.

Mr. O'Leary, is what you are offering 30k in sticks per team member or a lump sum? It sounds like you are anticipating trouble and since it is our skins we will be risking it would be good to have more information. See from the way it sounds to me, you are not really expecting the package to be where we are going and that we are going to have to go looking for it. 30K a pop would definitely be a good amount for us doing some tracking. 10 K not so much. Especially if there is danger.

"Do you have better prospects on the horizon? Runners like you are a dime a dozen. 30 K total. I tell you what, lady. I'll make it 35 just for you. Plus the 10 from your other job, of course."

"Or you can leave with nuthin'. It's up to you."

He walks over to behind his desk, opening a drawer and retrieving a cigar.

Cutting off the end and lighting it, O'leary looks the three of you over for an answer.

"Well? What's it gonna be?"

The current offer is 45,000 total. You dont think there is room for much more negotiation. Your gut tells you to be cautious of whether you procede and how.

"Good."

O'leary sits down in his desk and begins using the built-in commlink. Who's broadcasting a SIN? What SIN? And is thier commlink registered to to that SIN? He's trying to send you information, however this will mean that he can contact you and it may give him access to information that might help him track you down if he so wishes.

((Someone needs to be on active for a minute for him to pick up your commcode and send you the information. Since the others went out of their way to say they are on staying on passive, then that's gonna be Santero. Someone has to do it and he has a cruddy fake SIN and commlink. Santero, after this I'll assume you are usually on passive mode too unless you want me to do otherwise.))

The data is transferred to Santero's commlink, but before you can look it it he has his bodyguard show you out, while shouting at you. "Keep me informed. And don't fuck this up. It's important!"

As the elevator doors close, the mysterious warrior waves at you with his fingers. You can hear O'leary's loud, obnoxious laugh in the background.

Thankfully, the doors shut, leaving the pair behind. You all make your way downstairs and outside, where the rare Seattle snow still clings. Jimmy's car is gone, but it's probably for the better. More nuyen for you, right? The three of you gather around the commlink to peer at the info. It is basically just map with a large dot on it. Looks like it could have been a still picture taken of some kind of tracking program. Doesn't take long for you to recognize the area. It's just inside the edge of the Verge, southeast of you.

((Kali & Belial, Santero would probably send you the image. You all have eachother's fake SIN commcodes from previously working together. If you need info on the Verge then I can provide it for you. The three of you together would know a fair amount. You can also execute data searches and stuff where you're at.))

[OOC: ok as soon as we get a moment i'm going to sit down somewhere comfortable and astrally project. I'll also call both of my bound spirits along with my unbound spirit out of the meta-planes and have them on stand-by in astral. I'll use up a task from my unbound guardian spirit to continuously use it's optional power "concealment" to hide me and Kali in the astral plane. Since you said I recognize the location, I'll zip over to the place shown on the image and make visual contact with the package. If Kali comes along then it would be cool if she could summon an unbound spirit to bring with us because mine can't materialize....and then her spirit could grab the package and bring it back to our meat bodies.]

Santero waits until the group is a block or two from O'Leary's office.
"Oye Kali, let's just leave Belial here for a moment to watch our bodies and we can quickly fly over there in astral space and scope out the package. Call on one of your Great Spirits to send you a servant that can carry the package for us. Is that cool Belial? It'll only take a few minutes."

[OOC: as soon as Kali is ready to go i'm ready to go also. Just make sure that Kali uses the spirits conceal power to hide on it's way back to our meat bodies. I'll just preemptively roll an assensing test to look for any possible threats in the astral when we get close: Assensing 3 + Intuition 3 + Actively looking for 3 = 9 9d6.hits(5)=2 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2723179/). If you allow it to not count as a task, then I will ask my spirits to mentally inform me of any possible threats they see, but if it does count as a task for you, then I won't do this. If they do see something then i'll use a task to deal with it. ]

Guys, I think we should get out of here before we do this. Lets go to a stuffer shack or a hourly motel and do it in warmth and safety. I do not trust that drekhead farther than I can throw him. And that taint far. I also don't think it is going to be that easy to just go get the package. I am willing to go with you to check it out but I think we should be prepared for a drive a fight and some tracking. Heck do we even know what the package is we are looking for or were we just given a dot on a map? What if the vehicle has a bunch of stuff on it?
Title: Re: [IC] The Tell-Tale Heart

[OOC: I think it's actually the safest way to go....we scope it out with you and me, 2 F6 spirits, one F3, and you could summon a hefty one too. They would also be using their conceal power on all of us in astral space. The only thing that could cause us trouble in the scoping out would be if there were significant magical defense around the package....but if that's true, then there's also gonna be helluva lot of physical defense too. If we can't find the package in astral space where we can go through walls, we most definitely won't be able to find it on the physical realm. If the vehicle has a lot of stuff on it, how would it be any different if we were in the physical realm. One thing i could also do is have one of my spirits possess the vehicle and we could just drive the thing away....there's a lot of options but going astral is definitely the safest and quickest. We'll move cautiously looking out for mojo. If you want to go to a coffin motel first then i'm cool with that, but it would literally take seconds either way because either we find the package unguarded, or we don't find it at all, or we find it guarded and we move out come back to our bodies and figure out a plan for dealing with the threat.]

So anyone know of a nice safe house we can go and get stuff done in? I am sure we can find something quickly. Lets get this over with. Hey Belial, can you find out anything on our Johnson and see if we can figure out what the heck we are even looking for? I can call Terry and get us a place to go and investigate astrally while you do that.

The Verge, east of Touristville, is a section of the Redmond area that was damaged by the volcanic eruption that occurred nearby. Promises were made about rebuilding the area, however, the promises were empty. Now a number of particularly gangs struggle for control over the area. Crime organizations, such as the Yakuza and Mafia, compete to provide the area with black market goods, which the residents could not survive without.

Your bodyshop contact can only tell you about O'Leary's teeth. Seems he has some sort of morbid fascination with predator and prey, survival of the fittest, and various insane philosophies. He's a ruthless man who views the murder of others as the natural order of things.

Kael has never heard of O'Leary, but offers to keep his ears open. The Ancients, and elves in general, do not have a strong presence in Redmond. There aren't a ton of metahumans there (Ever since the Night of Rage), but the largest metahuman population in that area is Orks.

You don't think you've heard of O'Leary being a part of any organization. You just heard of the guy tonight though, so who knows.

None of your contacts know anything about a bodyguard with dermal sheathing.

There's a really sketchy motel a few blocks away. There's also some Fast Food and Diners still open. Bars in this part of town are open long hours; sometimes all night. Kali and Belial (Probably) live relatively nearby, both either in or near Touristville. Santero (Probably) lives a bit further away (like in or near the Plastic Jungle).

((OOC: You have the final word on where you live. You are currently in Touristville, Redmond. The nicer slums of Seattle. Generally speaking, the rest of Redmond is alot worse. Santero, the plastic jungle seems the best place for your community, but it's up to you. Kali, if you were thinking you lived in a more natural environment, the plastic jungle might work for you too.

Now I'm just telling you a couple options. If you want to find an abandoned building, a swanky nightclub, a back alley, or anything else, then you can do that. Or if you have contacts in the area you can ask them to let you drop by. Whatever. :) ))

Lets head over to this motel I know of. I am sure we can get a less infested one for a bit o time. *Kali starts driving over to the motel about 4 miles out from where they are*

* Kali also calls up Terry her fixer contact as she drives out*

Hey Terry my favorite good time, how are you tonight? I am looking for some intel on a hard chummer. Wondering if you can help me out. A good dinner for 2 is in it for you if you can find some good drek on him. I think he is testing my little team of outcasts for something bigger and just want to survive his test. His name is O'Leary, man with metal teeth and a body guard with dermal sheeting on him. Ya know anything or can ya do some digging for me?

*I am using my etiquette on this to talk him into doing some digging for me. Charisma of 5 Etiquette of 3 8d6.hits(5)=2 8d6.hits(5) → [3,3,2,4,4,3,5,5] = (2) *

You drive towards the motel, making good time, but passing right by a knight errant armored patrol unit. They pay you no attention, as far as you can tell.

Not many people out and about tonight. It doesn't snow real often, but, when it does, the majority of people around Seattle fear having to drive in it. There is a black smoke blowing through the air, probably from a burning building somewhere nearby.

You pull into the walled parking lot of the "Sleep Inn" motel. This is the kinda place with bars on the windows and several locks on the doors. The office is off to the side and the light is on, though, from where you are you cannot see anyone at the counter.

A dark figure looms above you on the motel's second story walkway, smoking a cigarette and watching you as you pull in. From what you can tell, you might guess it to be a male human or ork in an overcoat and hat.

@Kali
Terry: "Got yourself a deal. Hold on." *Pause* " Metal teeth, huh? Okay. Well this may take a few. I'll call you back when I've got something. I gotta go. I've got another call. Bye."

Belial pulls his AK and makes a show of standing guard while Kali goes into the office. He also flips his cybereyes to low light vision and takes a better look at the figure standing above the team.
