Title: [SR6] Some more host questions
Post by: Sugarpink on <04-17-22/0713:26>
To continue my questioning things I can’t find the answers for (or don’t know how to look for them), some more things I wonder about hosts:

In 5E all hosts where omnipresent constructs that existed purely on the matrix, this had no physical location. In this context it made sense that there was no distance noise to a host and anything within the host. In 6E there is explicit mention of hosts tied to a physical location. So, are connections to hosts in 6E affected by distance noise or not? Or only those that have a physical location?

And the other question is, what things do count as a host? Would a home automation system (center of a smart home) already count as a host (probs only rating 1, but still) or is that just part of the home owners PAN? In SR4A I would have thought such a device be something like a small nexus to which the parts of the home (locks, lights, heating, cameras,...) are slaves to, but ever since 5E I am always unsure how such systems would be represented in the rules.

As always, thank you I’m advance! :)

Short answer ..  all will be answered in the upcoming matrix book.

In the meantime the baseline of the overall matrix is still Resonance based and even physical hosts are connected to this so no noise inside a host but there would stillbe noise between a hacker and a host in some cases. Use whatever works for the story.

A home system could be a robust PAN or a small host ... the host option is significantly more expensive so probably only found in high and above lifestyles. Lower end living would just have to rely on commlink like devices.

So, are connections to hosts in 6E affected by distance noise ...
We play it as there is no noise due to distance within a network, but in case the decker is remote hacking rather than joining the team on site there might still be noise due to distance you need to account for between the physical location of the decker's cyberdeck and the nearest access point / physical location of the nearest wireless enabled device that is also part of the network.

all will be answered in the upcoming matrix book.
Can't wait :-)

Thank you both for those answers.
On the topic of a new matrix book though, do you know if there will be rules for creating/purchasing hosts this time around. Because if I am not mistaken, that issue was never addressed in 5E (not even in Kill Code, unless I missed it).

Not sure how much detail I can give without getting in trouble... but i did write a whole chapter about hosts.
