Title: [6e] Mana barrier (spell)

Quote
At the basic level, the spell creates a two-meter-by-two-meter barrier. The Increase Area effect can be added to add up to two meters in length and width (but not depth) for each time the effect is chosen. The barrier can be shaped as desired by the caster.

I don't really see the point in making a barrier that doesn't completely surround the area you want to protect, since astral entities don't really care about walls and other obstacles in the real world. The only exception would be an elevator shaft or passage that leads below the earth's surface, since the earth blocks astral movement. Or at least it did, in previous editions.

So, for those interested in making barriers that are shaped as closed surfaces:

Increase Are Effect |Drain |Surface |Cube side |Side of 2,4m high cuboid |Sphere radius |Dome radius
054 m²0,82 m0,39 m0,56 m0,65 m
1616 m²1,63 m1,31 m1,13 m1,3 m
2736 m²2,45 m2,47 m1,69 m1,95 m
3864 m²3,27 m3,74 m2,26 m2,61 m

That’s a great chart!  But for the record, you could use mana barrier across a doorway or similar to block people entering with active spells or foci or etc., right?  If you’re not trying to block astral entities but to block physical Mages from entering all geared up for trouble.

Granted, you probably would use a ritual not a spell for that, so you’d probably get a bigger area for free… so maybe never mind.  :)

The main purpose of casting a mana barrier spell on the physical plane is to make it harder for an opponent magician on the physical plane to cast spells at you.

If you wish to protect a location from astral entities you would typically use one of the rituals (like a Ward). Or build a medicine lodge.

Depending on 6e rules: there could be creative uses as well...

Under 5e, Mana barrier could cause an astral intersection for dual natured critters... which makes it good at stopping you from getting:

Cooked and eaten by hellhounds,
Melted and eaten by cerebus hounds,
Shredded and eaten by ghouls,
Sunked dry by vampires.

(This may be what ammulder is alluding to)

Good points. But since the description of the spell starts with "Want a spirit-free room?", at least it is meant to be used for that purpose too.

Rituals are nice given the right circumstances. Specifically, when you have enough time and enough participants.

In case of Mana Barrier vs. Ward, note that the spell creates a barrier with rating (Magic + net hits), whereas the ritual creates a barrier with rating (net hits) only. Even with a lot of participants for the ritual, the teamwork test cannot provide more bonus dice to the leader than his original dice pool, so you'll probably never make a barrier as strong as the one you'd obtain with the spell.

You need 6 karma to make the ritual permanent. But you could also quicken the spell for a similar price (provided that you have Quickening of course).

To me the only saving grace of the ritual is the size of the barrier: up to 50 m³ times the sum of the participants’ Magic ratings.

Then you have the lodge of course, which, as far as I can tell, has no maximum rating. Provided you can pay for the materials of course. The only limiting factor is the availability of those materials I guess.

FYI, in the latest PDF revision, Ward (the ritual) creates a barrier with rating (leader's Magic rating)+net hits

Ah, thanks for the information! My PDF version is not up-to-date and I rarely think about checking the errata.

If you want your mana barrier (spell) to stop actually astral entities then it seem as if you need to cast it on the astral plane rather than on the physical plane.

You also have the Circle of Protection Ritual.

Yeah, even if I understand the reason, I wonder if it's really worth complicating things like that. According to the table p.162, the spell is the only case where the mana barrier is either on the physical or on the astral plane. I assume casting it on the astral stops materialized spirits too, since they remain dual natured when materialized.
