Greetings
I just want to make sure I'm on the right Track here.
Unless the Source material states that other wise I can safely assume that you can add any weapon mod you want to exotic weapons.
for example putting an under barrel Flamethrower on an Ares Screech is OK, but not a barrel mounted Flash suppressor on a Laser weapon but nether can have the full auto  mod due to their ammo source being Exotic
Am I correct in my understanding here?

Correct.

Shadowrun generally sets a general rule, and then spells out exceptions in individual cases as they appear.

So the general rule "weapon mods can go on weapons" is in effect unless countered by a specific exceptions like "this weapon cannot take underbarrel modifications", or "this mod cannot be put on X type of weapon".

Telling you what each and every mod CAN be mounted on would take up waaay too much text.
