I saw this but under Latex Masks it says it should have a rating

A Biometric Reader (as Ethan mentioned) can be set to do any of the Biometric scans listed in SR4A, p. 262-264. The standard reader that costs 200¥ has a Rating of 3, no listing for higher/lower ratings, so it'd be up to your GM to determine cost/availability of superior/inferior versions.

If were the gm, I'd do a similar thing to the way programs and commlink upgrades are priced. ie, that the lower three ratings cost half as much to upgrade as the top three ratings. So for that scanner it would be:
Rating      Price
1                100
2                150
3                200
4                300
5                400
6                500

Thing I hate about things like that: Why would any halfway decent security system have a R1 or even R5 scanner, when the R6 "best scanner available" isn't that much more expensive or harder to get?

Well it's usually not so much a question of price, but availability, and restrictions. Obviously it wouldn't be much of an issue for a simple biometric scanner, but when you get in the realm of cyberware detectors and such, a rating six is the equivilent of brand new mil-spec, which the military might be too keen to have readily available on the market. I usually keep low priced, high value items balanced with high restrictions, along with in game consequences if the characters go around buying up all sorts of restricted and forbidden gear. For example, lone star might come a calling, or Ares might "politely" inquire how the character is getting a hold of their corporate issue heavy weaponry.

You could consider all that justification, and it is. Most of the time with programs, scanners, medkits, and such I will go straight for the highest rating, but the idea is that your average joe non-megacorp won't.

I'd do
Rating      Price
1                100
2                150
3                200
4                500
5             1,000
6              1,500

it's a major flaw in the SR4 rule set that pricing and availability increase linear. It makes low rating gear superfluous. It's also unrealistic. Today I can buy a Rating 1 TV for 50 bucks, but the best TV available will not cost 300  ;D ::)

Which is why, after character generation, I enforce a non-linear cost table similar to what Chrona just did.
