Title: Rules in the CAS [SR5]
Post by: BeCareful on <12-14-19/0101:30>
I'm planning a series of runs set, initially, in Atlanta (in SR5e), and am fairly certain that I'd have to alter the legality on weapons availability. Similar to how all guns are Forbidden in London & Neo-Tokyo, except in the other direction.
Since neither I nor the players have much background info on the CAS, I'm guessing that all pistols, shotguns, and Single-Shot rifles would be fully legal, but would require an Open Carry permit for each type of gun (or you could possibly cover them all by getting a fake bounty hunter license). Similarly, you could mount these on drones and tell Lone Star they're in case a juggernaut decides to take a nap on the interstate. Anything capable of burst-fire is still Restricted, and Forbidden guns are still Forbidden. If you're entering a clearly delineated No Guns Allowed Zone, you're expected to either leave your guns at home or at the check-in, where you can pick them up as you leave.

I was wondering about the implications of this. Would that encourage more use of Pistols/Longarms, or would it not matter if you can just concealed-carry your Steyr TMP or Ingram? Though I do admit, to my players, it'd sound like fun for everyone to carry around a perfectly legal sawn-off.
Also, am I wrong and is there some rule in some book that says what the law really is? Mainly in case it'd work better than my half-hoop homebrew.

Nothing says you can't homebrew your own rules/laws for the CAS.

In fact, to the best of my knowledge, they haven't published a "list" of laws really for any area since 2e. (I think they were listed in Neo-A's guide. circa 1994?)

I have the DTF sitting around here in a box somewhere...

As I recall, the CAS was big on fines... they loved to fine you for everything. So some things that were jail sentences in the UCAS were fines in the CAS... or fines with jail time at the top end of things...

Weapons laws -as far as I remember- where not that much different from the UCAS... but again, fines.... So while having an unregistered shotgun int he UCAS might get you a 6 month stay on the State/ LoneStar... in the CAS you got a 15k fine and the weapon taken...

Edit: I forgot I had Neo A on PDF and checked.. its not that book...

You can fin the (dated) on page 33-34 of the Neo-A guide to North America. pp35-46 covers Atlanta btw. But It's SR1 era (2052).

So melee wpns, projectile wpns, pistol and rifle are all nice and legal. Possession of anything heavier will lead to fines and/or jail time (for heavy and military wpns). Non-military armour is fine, but possession of military armor is heavily fined.

Class B cyberware is also legal to posessess. You are looking at s 300-400% for cyberware and 200-250% for programs in the CAS. All other cyberware/illegal cyberdeck & progrsm is not.

@Reaver, I know, I just wanted to ask if there was anything official before I did it.

@Boneguard Thanks for that. It also means I can update the laws!

I do know that Lone Star's big on fines, especially because they're paid by quota, making bribery an acceptable option. I'll probably also add that if they catch you exceeding the speed limit on foot thanks to cheese with a spirit's Movement power, they'll confisate all your reagents. Unlicensed spellcasting will probably involve thankless community service, or having to pay off the installation of two dozen datajacks if it's mind-control.

Something else that came to mind:
I think the CAS does not use the Metric System, but for simplicity's sake, any reference to movement, distance, or range will use it.
I won't tell my PCs, but the first time someone grumbles and gets out their commlink to do the conversions, I'll refresh a point of Edge ;)

I do bbelieve you are correct in that the CAS use the Imperial System (as the last Bastion of America, it makes sense).

That's a pretty cool idea, I can just imagine the character just bring frustrated to figure how much a gallon is or a pound for that matter.

Edit: corrected the last sentence. Not sur where "as it" came from as it was meant to be "or". Made the sentence funnier though.

A pound is weight, a gallon is volume :D thus while there is a relationship between the two, they are not the same. (a gallon of water weights more then a gallon of petrol)

A gallon is also 4.6 liters OR 3.83 liters... depending on if you are using British Imperial, or American Imperial...

The CAS uses Imperial, yes, which drives Slamm-0! up a tree every time it comes up as he just cannot handle converting measurements. It's a fun little running joke. :D
