Title: Smite
Post by: Black on <06-14-12/2317:44>
Is it me or does it get irritating when your smited and you don't know why.

Didnt mind when I knew why, but completely random smites, kinda irritating.

Unless I am being a Jerk and just dont realise it... ???

This is not a new feeling.  A quick glance down the page will show several threads expressing similar concerns, and admin/moderator responses to them (in short, mucking around with the reputation code may screw up the whole forum, so we're all just sucking it up and soldiering on).

If it irritates you, maybe you're putting too much emphasis on it. Think about this:

It's a message board for a game.
People will dislike you for whatever reason they can come up with.
It's a message board for a game.

What is the consiquence of a random stranger not liking what you said on a game's message board?

Me personally? Don't care. It's as important to me as post count is.

I can't help but think of Just_a_Dude. Someone smote him so bad he had to change his little blurb beneath his avatar picture to explain why.

If the rep system of a forum on the internet has that big an effect on you, you need to get a thicker skin. This is the internet. Sometimes it is pointlessly cruel. Changing that is like trying to change gravity.
Title: Re: Smite

Yeah, I know.  Toughen up sunshine.

Was kinda hoping the person who smited me would actually tell me and why.  Its ok if I know why, sometimes discussions get heated and people smite.  Its when you have no idea what they hell you said that irritated someone and you go huh?

Anyway... such is life.

Right.
So anyway, this isn't worth a new thread so I'll just hijack this one since it seems a bit finished.

Could the person who more than doubled my Negative Rep the past two days just please tell me why?

All but one of the topics I've been discussing in have been quite friendly and in the one where it -might- have been possible, I've asked and been answered that they weren't doing it...

I understand that changing the Rep system isn't really an option and don't actually think that removing it would be good, it does have its merits, or could have if people knew how to behave civilized I guess.
Can Mods see a smite log? If so, I understand that they can't tell others where they're coming from, but could they maybe check with smite-spammers what their problem is all about? Or maybe tell them that if the annoyance is so bad that it's worth spending hours waiting for spam-lag to pass, that there's a "Report to moderator" button that might be better suited?

Enjoy the thread Xy.  I, personally, have no idea why your being smites.  This seems a recent event.  I've been picking up about 5 a day in the last week and I'm lost to why?

Is anyone else getting a ton of smites in the last week?

Ayup.

Nothing new on my side, but I'm pretty I know who and why... it's at least partially a case of certain board-members, who shall remain nameless in case I'm wrong, just deciding they don't like someone and smiting people every time they see their name, regardless of if there's any new "offense" or not.

For me it's also a case of momentum. People see I already have a "bad" rep, so they're less likely to Applaud and more likely to Smite,  making it worse.

Yeah, it just happens sometimes.  Someone -- often a newer user, I suspect, or someone newly active at any rate -- occasionally gets a bug up their butt and smites the holy bejeebus outta everyone they see, often (seemingly) at every chance they get.

It comes and goes in waves.

There's no real accountability with smiting. It should not be mistaken for a substantiated reflection of one's forum standing.
Since I plan on spending a bit more time on these forums, I'll get my turn at the smite monkeys' doorknob too.

True.
But before I was "under attack", it was a good way to find out if I had offended anyone by accident.
Log in, notice your rep dropped by one, check the things you wrote the day before and sometimes you'd find out that, yes, that might have been written in a "heat of the moment" state of the mind, or might have been misinterpreted or simply offending and you can apologize for it.

Now... *shrug*

I have noticed the astronomical climb of your negative rep. That is why i applaud you every time I see your name. Seriously, some people are pretty immature. Why is it ever worth it to go and smite someone every hour on the hour over one "offense"?

Heh. I don't see what the deal with getting smites is, honestly. Way I see it, if you're not sucking up to everyone, you're bound to piss a few people off. Which is by no means a new opinion, or one that has not been addressed by the administrators before.  It is, apparently, a thing that cannot happen without affecting forum stability.  And so, we must have the serenity to accept the things we cannon change, as Niebuhr would put it.

Meh. There are things one cannot change. If the negative opinions of anonymous people on the internet (i.e. smiters) is going to bring you down, then you need to get a thicker skin, or practice selective vision. Personally, the smites I've gotten (and I seem to have a couple) don't bother me. But then I don't often look at the rep scores unless someone mentions them.

In actuality, I believe the system can be disabled without issue. It's getting into modifications of the rep system that starts to cause issues.

Out of the forum regulars, we know who the heavy smiters are, and who thr people we disagree with often are. As an example, I almost always disagree with 2 forum vets, and I never notice my smite count change when we argue, and I don't smite them either since its irreconcilable opinion differences, no big deal. That means the smites I have noticed were probably someone I've barely spoken to. Again, it happens, no big deal.

Plus, sometimes weird things bother people. Screen names, story ideas, houserules etc sometimed rub people the wrong way for whatever awkward reason. Maybe someone really hates Victor Hugo, and my SN reminds them of the Lit Professor From Hell. Or has a horrible intolerance for bad English, or sexuality in their games, or your avatar pisses them off (I'm looking at you, Mirikon. Still cant tell what thats a pic of :p)

I`ve not smoted/smited anyone yet, that I recall unless I miskeyed. Honestly they`d have to run over my cat and then eat it before I`d think of leaving a semi-permanent stain on their board rep. i`m even sparing with my applause. Granted in real terms it means less than  bugger all and seems a tad... cowardly even for the internet. If a person disagrees strongly to something said they should post a reply. There is a very, very easy way to stop this abuse of our board function. We could for a week smite everyone until ALL of our reps are below -500 then smiting anyone will be an obviously utterly pointless endeavour? ;D

Infact I volunteer to be carpet smited.

We could theme smite each week, Canadians first (Blame Canada), then the English the next week?

Can the Board Moderators set a persons rep I wonder, is there a max negative rep we could all be set at?

I tend to limit my smites for occasions when people are being really beyond the bounds of sarcasm and normal arguing. When flame wars start, I tend to be pretty liberal with the smites, on both sides. (I even smote myself, once.) Otherwise, I don't bother with it. Likewise, I only give a +1 when someone contributes something to the conversation that raises the level of awesome in the forum. Very subjective, on both counts, I know, but there you go.

There needs to either be a tracking system or a general "Here's who smote you" system or the system turned off, IMHO.

For some reason, in two days, I've gone from -7 to -11. Why? I don't know. Did I offend someone somehow and they're now shadowing my posts to drop a smite? Did I say something untowards that several different people took offense to and threw smites to penalize me?

I have no idea.

Nor will I ever know.

That doesn't help the community if you don't say *why* you have negative feelings. All it really does is ... create more negative feelings.

You could have an applaud, but no smite, that'd work fine. Or neither + nor -, that's also fine, but, as it stands?

Hurts my head, like, a lot.

"Well, just ignore it then."

Possible, but if the point is to ignore it, why have it?

Grf.

I'm probably too tired to be thinking about this right now, but... Grf.

-18 now, so someone is being a real jerk Wak.  I think we are going through a spike again, took another 4 smites in the last two days, not as bad as you, but noticeable after lul in the smiting.

Would be better if people were more upfront about it.  May not make things more peaceful, bu random smiting is annoying and it is better if people just say 'I don't like your take on xxxx, and -1 to you'.   But that will never happen.

I actually think its someone who doesn't or rarely posts, but what do know?
Title: Re: Smite
Post by: Wakshaani on <08-16-12/1217:51>
Yeah, it goes back to basic psychology here. If you train a dog by punishing it when it poos on the carpet, but give it a treat when it goes outside, you train it where it should go. When a kid gets a spanking when they have a tantrum and punch their sibling, but get a treat when they're nice, you get behavior changes because you can point to what's good and what's bad.

Applaud and Smite could be used in the same way, encouraging good posts and discouraging bad ones... but only if you know why they're happening. If you don't, it's like just smacking a dog at random. It doesn't know what's up and eventually just becomes a fearly thing that curls up whenever you come near, since you might hit it for no reason.

I hate to break the concept down like that, but, it's the easiest way to showcase the problem.

I'd be highly in favor of knowing what post got the applaud or smite. Even if the system must remain anonymous to work, it really does not help unless you you can track what you got zapped for.

I'd also be in favor of not being able to hand out more total applauds or smites than you have posts. that would not limits many old timers, but newbys would have to pick and choose, and ti would become a somewhat limited resource.
