You must have Smartlink installed in either eyes, cybereyes or contacts/glasses/goggles/helmet. Trodes simply are for DNI bonuses, the smartlink is needed to translate the signals.

also is http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/121423/Shadowrun-Gear-Cards-SR5-Series-1 a good investment? if so just the pdf or pdf + cards?

SR4 Runner's Toolkits came with several booklets, one of them included extra contact types. Want me to dig them up for you?

I'm going to stay neutral on the gear-cards. I see the appeal but it's not for me, but as GM I supply other printouts to players anyway.
