Title: Don't use Uber for rides
Post by: Poindexter on <01-09-15/2237:08>
They treat their drivers horribly. Just today, they cut their pay in HALF with no notice right before the weekend when it would hurt the most.

Don't use them.

Yeah, they're cheaper, but you are DIRECTLY benefiting from the exploitation of another human when you do.

Evidence/Links?  Explanation of what 'Uber' is?  Reason for the alleged pay-cut?

Working for Uber is completely voluntary. If they felt exploited they'd move on. If you boycott them, the drivers get nothing.

If it bothers you that much, give the driver a big tip when you use them.

I don't use Uber for the simple fact that the driver are not professional drivers (and thus not subject to a background check) and nor are their cars inspected by a Safety inspector.

Call Uber, your ride may be a death trap on wheels driven by an alcoholic with "emotional issues"

I wouldn't ride in a taxi in Saint Louis at that point either, if I were you. :D

They get background checks and their driving records are periodically pulled to make sure they are safe. Uber wouldn't be as large as they are now if they didn't have their act together. Also the few times I've taken them their cars have been quite nice!

If it bothers you that much, give the driver a big tip when you use them.

That's what i do. Uber and a big tip is still a lot cheaper than a traditional taxi

For years.

Not that that has made her safe to drive with. (Nor do I pay to fix her car.)

(Let me put it this way, I trust my 17yr daughter to drive in Ottawa winter conditions before I trust the Ex in a summer day in the Parries - she'll still hit someone)

I agree wholeheartedly, OP. Boycott Uber AND Lyft. Similar reasons, although Lyft also has the ads that sexualize public spaces and freaking being alone with strangers in a car with their 'ride on our moustache' crap or whatever. I mean, there are really a lot of problems with this industry. Stick to cab drivers, at least they have a chance to unionize and demand fair treatment.

Take a Cab in London.

Then take a Cab in New York.

Not all Cab drivers are created equal.

I have never been to New York, but the cabs I have taken elsewhere were very hit-and-miss.  London cabbies are great - they follow the laws, they know the shortcuts, and they aren't complete assholes.  San Francisco cabbies are a mess - some of them are great but most are crap.  Seattle cabbies are very good - at least the ones I've dealt with.  Denver cabbies are awesome - because they're high as a kite.  :P

In places with shit cabbies, I'd be up for an alternative.  Free markets breed competition, which breeds progress.  The only people that don't want competition are those that have a corner on the market already.  Google for instance - as great as Google is in a lot of regards, I think if they were able to nudge out their competition in their various markets, they would be horrid.  When I lived in Houston, we had a single electric company that had god-awful policies, rates, service, etc.  Then the voters opened up the market to allow anyone in.  It became a feeding frenzy and prices went down, service went up, etc.  But without some sort of regulation, there were a bunch of fly-by-night companies that just came in and took money and gave nothing back.  They could afford to close up shop because they had no intention of sticking around to begin with.

What I'm saying is that a free market is better than a non-free market.  But we do need to have standards.  Uber seems to be trying to shaft their drivers in the only way they legally can.  But I still support the idea of adding competition to the taxi business.  The taxi unions have kept people out of most markets for decades - and you can see the effect in places like San Francisco.

Taxi service in Houston is pretty shoddy. I find myself using services like SuperShuttle if I have to arrange for transportation anywhere without use of my own car.

Oh I've never even tried to do a taxi in Houston.  The bus, sure.  Which is also shoddy as hell.

Huh.

I've been regularly using Uber for the past year when I'm in a situation where I can't use public transportation. And thus far...things have been perfectly fine. All the drivers I've met are nice people, cars are in good conditions, and they get me to where I need to go with no fuss. And I live in the Los Angeles area; just recently had a guy lift me out in the middle of freakin' South Central.

Sounds more like DocWagon HRT than a taxi.  :P

What about those Z zone taxis they list in the old 4th ed core book? Do they have a name or is the company literally Z Zone Taxis

Absolutely none of his blog entry contains hard facts.  "A healthy cut" and "almost all" are not facts, they're opinions.

Yes, will do in the futur. I was thinking it was automatic ... anyway

But the point he made (in the no Url link) is interesting, after all we are "selling" our free time in a sort and we are paying a healty cut to the third man (in that case Uber) with all the others think you don't get (health assurance and all)

you could be a libertarian and be Ok with that but I feel that Uber is working to maximize is profit without giving a share to the user (of is program) and I'm not sure that is a good way of making turn the economy

No one is forced to sell their free time.  They get paid what they get paid, and if they want more they should demand more.  And if Uber ever went public with its stocks, then the shareholders become those that make the profit, so the Uber drivers should strongly consider investing in their own business.  Actually, that's a sound strategy in any business.  Invest in your company so that you have more say, and so that you make more money off your labor.
