Title: Origins, June 22-26, Columbus, OH

Anyone going to Origins this year?  :)

Alas, the budget can only afford one convention a year, and this year it's GenCon.

I'm going to Origins.

I used to go to GenCon but they massively screwed over volunteer judges a couple years in a row a while back and I stopped.

I'll be at Origins running things.  Yay me.  *sigh*  (I thought I was out, but they pulled me back in!)

Karma:  Gen Con, or Shadowrun/CGL?

Wizards. Back when it was still owned and run by Wizards.

After they sold it off I just never ended up going again.

Got this one booked up for vacation as well.  Still gotta find a room though, but I'll be there

Big Bar meet and greet?

Absolutely down for a meet-and-greet.  Big Bar is a standard, but there are better places nearby in the Arena District.  Gordon Biersch?

Heh. Totally a local yokel. I will be at Origins even if I must hang out in front of the dealers room with an empty coffee cup begging for spare certified cred...

As an aside I really hate these new captchas...

As an aside I really hate these new captchas...

Unfortunately the old ones were getting circumvented by bots too easily.

The most interesting one I have seen was one where you had to manipulate sliders to rotate up pieces of artwork to the proper orientation. There were several orientations where the linework matched up, but were clearly "wrong" as the overall image was still scrambled. So the only way to get the "right" orientation was to be able to make a judgment call on the subject of the art - easy for a human to do, but something I can't see bots being able to do anytime soon.

Just a note, I have the events submitted to our Convention Coordinator for CGL.  If all goes as planned, there will be 40+ Shadowrun Missions events, and the first ever Origins Shadowrun Scramble. :)

Woot!

An excuse to dress up in character, yay!

Although i'm probably doing it as my human Merc. A Pixie costume would be problematic.

Feel free to borrow my Pixie Character idea...  Get a 12" GI Joe toy, get some fairy wings for it, put it on your shoulder, and you play the Pixies hired bodyguard (I'd planned to take a Loyalty 6 Contact to be the Bodyguard for the character).

Isn't your Missions Pixie also a Rigger?  I'm picturing a GI Joe figure with fairy wings riding around on a remote control car now :)

Our pixie Dronomancer was SURGEd to resemble a Gargoyle and had an Otomo as her primary Drone. She Maqueraded as an Emotitoy.

There are only two bars to ever worry about at Origins...  The Big Bar on 2, and in years past, Bull's Rock Band & Room Party Bar & Grill.

The Big Bar on 2 is the Hyatt hotel bar, attached directly to the convention center.  It's pretty much where half the attendees end up every night.  It's also one of the few places you can sit in a bar next to Mike Stackpole, Phil Foglio, James Earnest, John Wick, Robin Laws, Eddy Webb, Jason Blair, Ken Hite, and a number of other gaming luminaries, all on the same night.

The other is less frequent in recent years, and likely won't happen this year due to other commitments, but the best way to rock the con is to simply stock up on booze at the liquor store and have a room party with 30 or 40 of your friends. :)  We've done this a number of rimes, and it tends to be more fun and overall cheaper.  Hell, most years, we end up taking home more booze than we brought :)

There are plenty of places in town to go.  It's a college town, after all.  But...  *shrug*  I never bother.  :)

I know ALL about college towns and kids. Worked Put-In-Bay PD for almost five years and I learned to HATE seeing groups of 20-ishers with greek letters on their shirts. Also lived in Toledo near the University, frequented downtown Bowling Green, and also had many merry adventure in Columbus. Only time I will go to a bar anymore is with a decent sized group of friends and more often than not I end up acting as the DD or "guardian angel" of the group. Don't mind, I like my drinks, but hate being too drunk.

But if anyone wants to do a room party, lets conspire.

NOT a missions legal character by any stretch. I run my my home games too old school and hardcore for a base BP Character to be legal. That particular game was a high-powered one.- J

The Origins Event list is now up: on the Oirgins Website:  http://www.originsgamefair.com/Events/tabid/2794/Default.aspx

Couple notes for folks looking to sign up for SR events...

1)  A Time of War is the new Battletech Roleplaying game.  It was mistakenly listed as a Shadowrun event.  It will likely be in the same place as the SR Tabletop games, but it's Battletech.

2)  The Shadowrun Scramble is currently listed as starting at 4 AM on Thursday.  This is an error.  It should be 4 PM on Thursday.

I'll pull out the events from the spreadsheet and post them to the SR website shortly.

Just a note for everyone attending and playing in Shadowrun games...

1)  The on-site event book is now available as a PDF on the Origins website.  For whatever reason, the game system is not listed in the book (Unless explicitly spelled out in the game title or "blurb").  All the Shadowrun events can be found by looking for "CMP" or "SRM" except the Scramble, which is listed as Shadowrun Missions Scramble.  (I actually know why this happened, but it's long, boring, and stupid, and involves how Origins had us fill out the excel spreadsheet to register our events).  The on-site book includes maps of the convention center.

2)  All of our events are in Franklin C (Which on the map is listed as the Catalyst room), with the exception of 3 events Thursday Morning at 10 AM which are currently listed as being in Union C.  We have games running at 8 AM and Noon in Franklin, and as far as I can tell, there are no other events running in Franklin C that are not our (Hence, being named Catalyst Room), so I assume that those three events being in Union is an error.  I Plan to try and get them moved (and post signs redirecting traffic).  Union is just down the hall from Franklin, so no big.

3)  I have no idea what our ticket status is (i.e., how many tickets are still available).  So no clue how much is sold out, if anything.

4)  The Shadowrun Scramble:

4a) The ttime has been fixed.  It is from 4 PM to Midnight on Thursday, and doesn't run opposite any of our other SR events.

4b) The game will start off in Franklin C, where players will be split into teams.  We'll open up with a tabletop session for a little bit to handle some early stuff, then break out into the LARP Portion.

4c) This year, the entire convention center represents the Ork Underground.  There will be maps telling players where certain locations are and what certain rooms represent, and we'll have a fair number of NPCs helping us out.  For those that have played/read any of the Season 4 missions thus far will recognize a fair number of our NPCs.

4d) Each team will have a specific goal, and some of those goals are at cross purposes with other players and NPCs.

4e) All PCs and NPCs will be required to wear a colored cloth tied around their arm to show that they're playing in the LARP, and to make it easy to recognize the other players and NPCs at a glance.  (We want to avoid hassling non-participants).

4f)  We're encouraging costumes and props!  I plan to get pictures of all the players and the costumes before the event starts (players tend to shed costume pieces as the night goes on and it gets too warm or uncomfortable).  If you bring any realistic weapons, we're fine with that, but we ask you not to carry it openly around the convention center, as the staff may have issues.  But a good, quality Airsoft gun or 6 makes for good props, and can be left in Franklin C.

4g)  There will be prizes for costumes, roleplaying, and the like.  These prizes include gift certificates for the CGL booth as well as in game benefits for your Missions characters.

4h) The Scramble is a Missions Event.  This means you should show up with a valid Missions character.  if you don't have one, check the Shadowrun4.com site for character creation rules.  Alternately, we'll have some copies of the Sample Characters available.

Hope to see y'all there!

(Cross post from Dumpshock)

Because i am getting into Origins on Wednesday early enough to have time to do something but not early enough to catch any of the Shadowrun slots and because I am, handsome, powerful, and exceptionally well connected (Read: I asked Bull nicely). We've gotten the go ahead to run one unofficial slot Wednesday night. I've got a GM, i've got a module (CMP 2011-04 Ancient Pawns) but I only have three players including myself. So if there is anyone else interested please drop me a PM. We'll be starting sometime likely around 7 to allow our GM to get done with his previous game and grab some food. Location is yet to be determined. I ask if you already have a ticket for this in another slot you continue to hold to that arrangement in order to minimize disruptions to other people. This was originally intended to be a GM's only "Slot 0" but with so many of the GM's corps going off to grab mongolian we're opening it up to other people. Please include your name and cell number in the PM so I can contact you at the con.

Alas, the budget can only afford one convention a year, and this year it's GenCon.

I am boycotting Gen Con until it returns to it's rightful home and stops pretending to be two conventions.

Origins, that I'm going to (and I have a thread in Character creation devoted to my goal of showing up without any massive character miscreations).

Here is my story...and it is the one I am sticking with.

Via freelancer email I throw out that I would be willing to run a Shadowrun game or two at Gen Con, just a simple little affair mind you. Mere nano-seconds after hitting the send button I notice that there is a reply from...Bull. Opening it up I read. "Mission. lots and lots of Missions. I still need GMs :)" Now, how can I offer to run an after hours game and not help out Bull? As he is one of the unsung heroes of CGL, an all round nice guy, and possessed of such stature that one doesn't casually seek to offend.

Sooooo..I will be at Origins running Missions (lots and lots of Missions).  ;D

I will also be filming for my YouTube channel so be sure to swing by and say hello!

Awesome.  That's precisely the sort of thing I was hoping to hear, as I was writing it.  I've been leery about my CMP jobs in part because I'm not really a "published adventure guy," in that in my own GMing (which has been about 20 years now), I don't think I've ever run a published adventure, for any game, ever, without making major changes.  Heck, even my Shadowrun adventures, I've just bought them to read, enjoy, and steal NPCs from.

So writing adventures has been an experience.  I've had fun playtesting them, I've had fun running them at a few cons...but I'm very glad to hear that other GMs have been able to use them, and players with those other GMs have still had "over-the-top" fun as a result.

So, anyways!  Lurker, if you run into anything that doesn't make sense, or you have any questions or just want to chat about how prior sessions of it have gone or anything, feel free to toss me a line.
