Title: [Resource] [NPCs] Ultimate Contact List
Post by: The Wyrm Ouroboros on <01-25-12/0247:25>
The Ultimate Contact List

We did this on Shadowland 6 with limited success, but I think it would be useful for GMs to have hereabouts.  That said, what we're looking for is more than just 'Fixer, Skill, Blah' -- name, personality, something different about him/her/it.  This is (or should be) almost pure flavor text.  Their name, their type (awakened paramedic, whatever), how they can be used, whether or not they are 'active' (by which we mean, if push came to shove, would they pick up a gun or a fireball and join in the fight next to your PC), their Connection rating, and their location -- Sprawl at least, more specific if you want.

I'd have to search for it, but I had a word document that had a listing of all the contacts seen in books.  At least, I think that's what it is.

Found it somewhere awhile back and saved it.  That was...  Three computers ago.  It's just the type of contact, but it's a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG list!

Interesting.  I am working on a project for my SR fansite and it is causing my to go through all the books cross-referencing some key intel.  In doing this, I am constantly stumbling over characters in the game world and have been thinking to try and compile the "People of the Sixth World" listing of all the contacts and people noted.  A daunting task, I digress...

I think the 'Active' attribute is an interesting one.  What about also noting their core attributes and special equipment, modifications, weapons and such - or do you see that info in 'Notes'?  ...or do you this list as a more abstract contacts list?  To flesh the contact out, would you want to include a 'Background' entry to allow the GM to give a little more depth to the rationale and history of the contact?

Always a good thing to have, though.

I'd wait for CanRay to turn up his copy first.  Then perhaps reference FastJack's list of ShadowLand and JackPoint posters.

To me, the 'abstract' is the numbers.  'Fixer (specialized)' or 'Armorer', perhaps -- and the GM uses THOSE stats, perhaps with a modification suggested by the Notes, for the crunchy bits for the contact.  This project is about the oil, not about the BCBs; if you want to write up the rationale and history of the contact, put in their attributes, equipments, mods, weapons, you'd probably be better off giving them their own thread, if it's that in-depth.

I'd rather not have more than a couple of phrases for Use; anything more elaborate can go into Notes, but it should still come in under 10 lines, max.  Look at what I've already thrown up there, just for reference, and I'm sure you can go 'okay, yeah, Hong Bros. would have some financial skills at 5-6, and their inner financial matrix would be seriously nasty to have to hack ...'  Or 'so Brutus used to smuggle -- maybe he has a t-bird stuffed away somewhere he could haul out if someone really went to town on his retirement 'home'...'

I understand.  Makes sense.

Also, doing a massive list of contacts is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down my list of things to do.  Regardless, I am interested to see what people turn up with.

Think of this as having ready-made details for your players or GM about the contacts they/you pick.  Think of these as slightly-more-complex versions of the Season 4 Contacts (http://www.shadowrun4.com/missions/seattle-season-4-contacts/) -- though I suppose we could add in 'Max Starting Loyalty' and 'Specialties' the way they do.  Anyhow, it's so you can say:

"You have a fixer?  Okay, here's Six -- kind of arrogant, hates pissant poke-your-nose-in people, has a faint New Jersey accent, works in Downtown Seattle.  Connection level 4."

Or you can say:

"You have a fixer?  Okay, here's MacCallister -- he's an ork ex-decker/hacker, a little gruff, a little pushy, feels very strongly about the Ork Underground becoming an official district -- got a lot of contacts down there.  Connection level 5."

Etc. etc.

Those are archetypes; hell, I have that same list from the old NSRCG character generator, sorted into categories and more.  General archetypes are not what we're looking for, however.  The archetype, in this case, would go into the Type field.

What we want are specific examples -- names, quirks, areas of operation, whether they'll gear up and go into the field.  Is the team street samurai's fixer Pluto a low-level fixer (Connection 3) or a high-level (Connection 5)??    Is the corp secretary the mage dating working for some warehouse manager at Evo (Connection 2) or is she working for an up-and-coming middle-manager at the local HQ (Connection 4)?

Too often players -- and GMs!! -- just give archetype 'I call my 5/5 fixer' without getting into what it means.  I mean for this resource to help players and GMs be able to go 'here, this is Brutus, he's my Mechanic'.  And then instead of making it 'so it takes three weeks for your car to get upgraded', the rigger can go have fun, and hey, maybe the rest of the group will discover a new neat place to hang out too.

Etc. etc.

Name: Archie
Occupation: Fixer, johnson.  Puts runners in contact with other people.
Description:  Middle age Male ork, tan skin, British accent .  Has no obviouse cybernetics.  Likes to ware nice suits, concealed body armor, and collects wrist watches.  Almost always have british para wings on the lapel of his suit.  He fits the average height for his metarace, and has a athletic build.  Smokes cigars, and had shrapnel scars on the left side of his face, and neck.

Bio:  Archibald , watson is a British born ork, after a brief time in the yardies, he joined the British royal army, and ended up in second para, and the SAS.  After leaving the service, in 2060 Archie moved the the eastern cost of north america.
He worked as street sam, for several teams.  Not just a gunner Archie is very good at planing, tactics, and B&E.
in the 2070's Archie moved up a couple notches and now mostly works as mid level fixer, and johnson.   Archie has been known to get a wild hair, and go on runs him self.
Archie has a good reputation in his dealings, and has not been known to screw over his runners.   He maintains a wide verity of contacts, and is good about getting gear, info,  fencing loot, or transportation, for a "finders fee".
If runners have one complaint about Archie, it that he expects results, and does not tolerate side jobs, when you work for him.  Meaning if you steal something on the job, that you weren't supposed to, he has tendency to get pissed off.  He also insist that any operations, are to be kept low key, and not blasted all over the news.  While he understands drek happens, purposely starting a fire fight with the locale swat team, is a sure way to never work for him again.    So leave the rocket launchers, and Heavy  machine guns at home kids.

I  use him as the first fixer my Players meet, and there first jobs normaly come through Archie.  Archie was one of my characters from 2nd, and 3rd Edition shadowrun. while he cant get some of the more exotic stuff he might know where you can.

Name: Paul Kingston
Alias: Rex (Latin for King)
Type: Fixer/ Information Source
Use:  Jobs, goods, Information
Active:  Yes (If Loyalty is 4+)
Connection: 4
Specialties: Gov./Corp. Data (ie. what they don't want the public to know natch.), equipment w/"clean" records (ie. gear that has no ties to criminal activities)
Location: San Diego, Los Angles, Seattle (Various rooms and suites in the downtown areas of each city, only does meets in open areas-parks, zoos, etc.- during the day)

Notes:  Rex is a "retired" UCAS Army Intelligence operative who specialized in data snatches, and matrix clean ups.  After 10 years in the Army he got out and went into business for himself.  Or at least that's what people think, in reality he serves a a source for totally deniable "assets" for the UCAS.  He still will set up runs that have nothing to do with the UCAS but when they need a clean operation he gets the job.  Rex is always on the hunt for new talent and knows that patience and a good street rep will get him access to the runners he may need when his masters call.

Breaker:  Contact Gang leader.
Metatype: ork.
Age: late 20's early 30's
Physical despription: Over 2 meters tall, muscled build, brown skinned.  Wares a Leather vest, and cammo pants.  Has a obvious cyber, arm and eye.
Services:  low end guns, extra muscle and shooters, bolt holes.
Description:  Born and breed in a Z-Zone , Breaker runs a gang that controls a neighborhood, or several square blocks.  They mostly run protection, but honestly protect the neighborhood , due to the fact that locale police will not respond to calls in the area.  The gang does conduct other criminal activities.  Breaker and his crew are very territorial of the turf, and will not  tolerate other criminal elements, and corporate intervention.  The gang is not above some thievery from the corps. and if the runners play smart can usually get a couple gang members to help with runs.  (extra shooters, muscle, or what ever)  Breakers word is his bond, honestly, and he exspects his contacts to do the same.

Services:  Breaker has a contact that can provide low end guns, at reasonable rates, no assault rifles or mil level gear.  Breaker has been known to let runner teams hire his boys for extra muscle and security for missions.  Breaker  can also provide bolt holes in his neighborhood, with decent security in areas that quite frankly the star wont go into.

Other notes:  Breaker, will always except hard nu-yen or favors.  Owing him a favor, means you have to do it.  If you refuse you lose him as a contact.  a Favor for breaker can be another whole side mission.  Most of these favors are usually small time jobs.  If you get well enough in his good graces (up grade his connection level)  , he can provide a free bolt hole in his turf, and will provide armed guards if you so desire.

Stats : B 7/6  A; 4/6 R3/5 S 6/8 C 4  I 3 L3 W 3
Augmentations:  Obvious cyber arm, spurs, reaction enhancer (2), muscle replacemnt 2, plastic bone lacing, single cyber eye.

George Hanson
Metatype: Orc
Job: Baggage Handler, local airport
Description: late teens, well muscled wearing either a work uniform (on the job) or casual (ME Metal from Attitude).  No tattoos, close-cropped hair.  Stained, callused hands.  Follows the local urbanbrawl team faithfully.

Bio: George is a typical orc; strong and hard working.  Taught early on that he wouldn't get the good jobs, he managed to get hired as a basic baggage handler at the local airport.  (Fortunately for George, although he didn't think so at the time, his father expressed very strong opinions about gang life, and what would happen to any offspring that joined a gang.)  George does have a SIN, and live in a very modest low-lifestyle place.

Assets:  George can freely move around the airport, both in the general public areas and on the tarmac.  He remembers faces well, and can listen in on conversations.  George could move items into or out of lockers or airplane luggage and bypass routine security.  He won't (knowingly) do anything that could cost him his job, but he has no real loyalty to airport security or his bosses.  Some good tickets to a home game or pre/after game bash, signed memorabilia, and you have someone who can move invisibly past airport security, carrying almost anything.

I altered the original post to reflect your comment. That said you stated that you can't imagine Mr. Jork at all, and that seems (to me at least) like a bad thing, how would you suggest I could improve the vividness of the npc's description?

Name: Major Vilesina Dalawe
Metatype: Elf
Job: Major, Tir Tairngir Peace Forces (Ghost)
Description: An attractive woman of 63 years (though, like most elves, she looks much younger), Dalawe has long long black hair and blue eyes to match her white skin. Because of her position, she is rarely in uniform, but always has a weapon on her.

Bio: Major Dalawe is a Ghost in the TTPF. Most of her service record and personal history is either redacted, classified, or 'disappeared'. She currently has the social rank of Noble in addition to her military rank. At present, she serves as the liason officer between the TTPF and both covert and deniable assets in the Seattle area, working out of the Tir Tairngir embassy there, where her 'official' job title is that of a records clerk.

Assets: In addition to her own abilities as a highly trained adept of the Warrior's Way, Dalawe has the resources of a national military to call upon if there is need. She can also provide access to milspec gear, provided that one can keep a trail from being linked back to her. In the shadows, she works primarily as a Johnson and fixer, working to build the rep of her assets, and establish their covers in the runner community.
