I'm brand-new to Shadowrun and I'm currently trying to stumble through making my first character.
I'm mostly looking for help with catching errors, correcting obvious mis-steps ("What? You did't take the Pottery skill? Everyone knows that's absolutely vital to all runners!),and... gear. I'm so totally lost on gear that it isn't even funny. It's just that there's so much of it that it's a little daunting. I know I want some cyber enhancements, and weapons are obviously necessary, so beyond that I'm clueless.
Without further ado, he's my crummy newb character:
Name: Jesus DeJesus, "Eight-Stone"
Metatype: Troll (40 BP)
Background: Jesus DeJesus was born a SINless troll in crippling poverty, like many, many others. Blessed with good genes, he grew to truly intimidating proportions rather quickly. He learned that a man that can take a punch is always in high demand, and quickly made a meager career as a mercenary, selling his strong arm to whichever of the local petty gangs could keep him flush with cash, drugs and favors. It wasn't long before he was able to scrape up enough money and influence to begin shadowrunning in his home town of WhereverIsConvenientFortheDMVille.
Luckily, men who can take a punch (or a bullet, or a concussive blast, or a massive electric shock... Jesus prides himself on his versatility) like "Eight-Stone" are in pretty low supply. Renowned for his toughness, the nickname Eight-Stone is a rough estimate of how many thrown rocks to the head it would take to bring Jesus down.
For his part, Eight-Stone considers himself to simply be another working shlub. He's a shadowrunner because it seems like the most amount of money he can make for the least amount of work. He's had some success so far, but some of his old gang contacts resent him for his disloyal, sellsword ways.
Eight-Stone's only real, discernible passion for anything is his love of video games. He plays modern games like Sword of Ages and Grand Arcanum, but his all time favorite game is the ancient and venerable battle of wits known as Starcraft. Eight-Stone is prone to opening up an AR window to play a quick game when things get too "boring" at a work. Though only a moderately-skilled player at best, Eight-Stone hopes to someday be good enough to go pro. In the meantime, running the shadows will have to suffice.

They've only met face-to-face once or twice, and even then, Mr. Twist took pains to conceal his appearance. The man's a bit paranoid.

Julissa "Claw" Oramas (Connection 2, Loyalty 4, 5 BP)- The only person from Eight-Stone's gang days that he's still on relatively friendly terms with. She's a tough street ork that keeps an ear to the ground for Eight-Stone. In return, Eight-Stone punches out the occasional ex-boyfriend.

Obviously, 'survivability' was what I was going for with this character. I may have overdone it a bit, though. I had a friend who told these hilarious stories about the troll he played in Shadowrun purposefully getting shot by a sniper to draw out his locations, and such, and the idea of an utterly indestructible juggernaut of a character just sounded like a lot of fun to me.
Once I get some confirmation that I've done this (relatively) right, I'll start toning him down. I'll bring him down to 400 BP and add Lifestyle and Contacts. The 10 Body and at least one of those Qualities will be the first things to go, in all likelihood.

Hi

Check out the thread "Begining Troll Bodyguard" on page 3 in this forum.  It has some ideas you might use.

I'll try to login tomorrow and help; hopefully there'll be plenty of replies by then.

Hmmmm,My Thoughts:
Edge (and MAG) are special Attributes ,they do not count towards the 250 BP Limit
Not awakened and no 'ware ....?
only 1 IP ?....baaaad Idea ;)
What about latent Awakening.... ?
Skip Specialisation , take them after your first Run(s)

with a latent Dance

Updated. Downgraded to 400 BP, got some gear. Any advice or pointing out of mistakes/glaring omissions appreciated.

You have a good Body score, and the armor jacket is decent armor.  The toughness quality, though, has always seemed overpriced to me, for a marginal benefit.  You would probably be better off spending the points on some cyberware and/or bioware.

Offensively, though, you are not as good.  Agility is an important Attribute in combat, and it can also be improved fairly cheaply with muscle toner.  Skills can also be improved with reflex recorders.  You can have an Agility of 4 by soft-maxing, and you can have either a 6 or two 5's for skills.  My advice would be different for a character who wasn't a troll professional merc, but for this character, I would recommend dropping Strength to 7 (same as 8 for most damage) and raising Agility by 1, and dropping demolitions by 1 to improve his longarms skill to a base of 5.  Then, I would get muscle toner: 2, and reflex recorders for his blades and longarms skills.  DICE POOLS are one of the major factors in how effective a character will be in the game, so you want to have good ones for things that are your primary specialties.

In keeping with your character concept, here are my suggestions (solely from SR4 core book):

Troll: 40
Attributes: 200
Edge: 20
Qualities: +10
Skills: 102
Resources: 36 (180,000₯)
Contacts: 12

Qualities
Allergy, mild, uncommon or Addiction, mild/BTL (more in character, but gain 1 notoriety) (+5BP)
Incompetent: Palming (+5BP)
Incompetent: Shadowing (+5BP)
Scorched (+5BP)
Quick Healer (10BP)

Attributes
Body – 8
Agility – 4 (6)
Reaction - 4 (6)
Strength – 7
Charisma – 2
Intuition – 4
Logic – 3
Willpower – 4

Edge – 3
Essence – 2.325

Skills
Athletics group – 3 (remember to use your gymnastics dodge and parry)
Longarms – 5
Blades – 5 (or change to clubs and use staff, stun baton, etc.)
Unarmed Combat – 2
Perception – 3
Demolitions – 2
First Aid – 1

Gear
Cyber: Wired Reflexes 2 (3 Ess, Av 12F / 32,000₯)
Bio: Platelet Factories (0.2 Ess, Av 12 / 25,000₯)
Bio: Muscle Toner R2 (0.4 Ess, Av 10R / 16,000₯)
Bio: Orthoskin R3 (0.75 Ess, Av12R / 90,000₯)
Contact Lenses R3: Flare Compensation, Image Link, Smart Link (Av 12R / 725₯)
Glasses R3: Low-Light (Av +4), R3 Vision Enhancement (Av +4), Vision Magnification (Av +2); (Av 12 / 575₯)
Medkit R6 (600₯)
Fake SIN R4 (Av 12, 4000₯)
Fake License R4 (Av 12, 400₯)

Keeping your other gear:
Armor Jacket w/ Fire Resistance 3, Nonconductivity 3 1800
Remington w/ External Smartgun System 950
Combat Axe 600
CMT Clip Commlink w/ Vector Xim OS and Subvocal Microphone 550
Flashpack 200
2 Flashbang Grenades 60

You can pick up another 15BP of negative qualities to afford reflex recorders, positive qualities, more/improved contacts, and/or some more gear.  I would specialize skills later with the karma from your first run xince there's no character generation benefit.

Made some changes based on various suggestions. I'm pretty happy with the character right now. He's probably not super-optimized, but I think he should be relatively effective and reflect what I want to play. I want to thank everyone for their help. I will of course listen to other suggestions, but I'm going to start applying to some games with this guy.

I have to admit, I only skimmed the part on Availability. Thanks... these are exactly the sort of errors I need to catch.

I don't think you can take Incompetent for a skill you don't have.

@Kot
That's the difference between SR3 and SR4(A). In SR3 you have to have the skill, in SR4(A) you may not have the skill and you can't default it. The character is treated as having a skill level of “unaware” for that particular skill. (see SR4A, Qualities > Incompetent, p.95)
