Title: Jack of all trades...can it be done...I think it has
Post by: JmOz01 on <03-03-14/1942:54>
So I had an idea for a character that was a bit of everything...Toyed with the idea for a week and this is what I came up with.  It is for an actual game, and his background is in the finalization process.  AS is a few elements of the character.  I know some of it is abusive.  I wanted him to be the ultimate second stringer (Not the best in anything but good enough to fill in)...

Wuxia
A: Skills 46/10;    B Magic:4 Mystic Adept, 7 spells;  C:Attributes  18;   D: recourses 50k,  E: Human (1)

Race: Human (1)

Body 1 (3)
Agility 4
Reaction 1 (3)
Strength 1
Willpower 3
logic 6
Charisma 4
Edge  2

Skills 10 Group, 46 Skills, 2x4 Magic =54 Skills, 10 groups

6 Automatics 10
6 Pistols 10
6 Blades 10
6 Perception 10
6 sneaking 10
1 Arcana 6
5 counter spelling 10
5 spell casting 10
6 etiquette 10
6 Negotiation 10
1 Pilot Ground Vehicles 2 (4)

4 Japanese 8
2 philosophy 8
1---specialization TBD
6 Sprawl Life 10
2 Security Procedures 8
1---Matrix
4 Magic theory 10

Codeslinger TBD ????
Mentor Spirit (Bear)
Natural Hardening

Code of Honor: Way of the Chinese knight
Distinctive Style: Talks to Teddy Bear
National SIN (TBD)

Magic 5 (4+1)
25 Karma 5 Power Points
---Attribute Boost Strength Level 2
---Improved Reflexes Level 2
---Improved Body Level 2
---Enhanced Healing (free from bear)

7 spells: Heal, Improved Invisibility 5TBD

Gear  50040 (50,000+2x20)
Erika Cyberdeck
Trodes
Metalink Comlink
Streetline Special Holdout Pistol
6 Regular Rounds
Credstick
Leather Jacket
Knife
Teddy Bear

So TBD is 5 spells, whether or not I want to take codeslinger and if so with what, and what specialization on philosophy, any help here would be appreciated

I have a few ideas for background, but the important part is he is now on the streets, no place to live, no money, no chance, he is just a homeless guy who talks to an old teddy bear.  But he seems to have an odd pass.  Shadow work will get him off the streets....

Elements:

Trained from an early age to be a Mageknight (Ares???) basically someone who merges magic with combat.  He was to be the team decker (I know physical stats don't back this).  He however broke out, with the help of his teddy bear (His Mentor spirit talks through it to him, and has for years).  He has become week from lack of food, he is basically extremely malnourished but bear sustains him, and helps him in his moments of need...

Attributes C is 16
Also, counting up the points you spent, I only come up with 12. You start with a base of 1 as a human

Personally, I LOVE Edge in 5th ed. You may want to consider getting more than two as a JoT, IMHO.

Yes, and I also only have 7 of 8 attributes listed  The missing Intuition is at 4 as well :)

Kinda looks more like your standard combat mage, really...  Also, you really can't do much of anything with that deck; you don't have the skills to work it.

Wow...more I left out when I typed it up.  Okay, the 18 was a oops, I meant 16, as that is what it adds up to.

I also did not list the group skills which are

Cracking 4
Hardware 4
Biomed 1
Athletics 1

Should probably add these things into the sheet...but not right now

Personally, I'd ditch the "mystic" part of mystic adept in order to allow more focus on everything else, or at least draft a contact into the decking shtick so you can regularly borrow the Erika off them instead of throwing so much nuyen at it.

So I have been playing Wuxia for the last 5 months or so, and it is going well.  There was some revision after the first couple sessions, including an embarrassing realization that I was a better face than are face was in key areas.  So that got toned down, we also got a redo when Hero Lab for 5th came out, which I changed a few small pieces at.

Overall he has been a real good character.  His talking to the Teddy Bear has been fun to RP, with the table's joke being the teddy bear is the real runner and I am the hired help...He has served as a good backup for the Hacker, and are street mage is less than reliable so I have picked up a lot of slack in that area.

Just thought I would check in and let people know how it is going

Jack of All trades? Naa.
Your spent broad and shallow, not efficiently. While you did manage to squeeze about 3 concepts onto one sheet.
Your pools are too low for a decent chance of success on any the comparative tests. You can't successfully deck on 50k.
You can probably roll a mean search test with it. But you'll get womped in Cybercombat.

Jack of All Trades is best done ether with skillwires, or Overwhelming Edge. Skillwires is solid cause its super modular, whatever skill you need can be acquired.
The Edge method just lets swing any pool into a chance of success, it slightly more limited then Skillwires, but can give a higher success rate.

Well out of the five runs (10 sessions) I have done just fine.  I am one of the groups main combatants, have saved the decker a couple time in cyber combat, and normally provide the magic support as our Street Mage is less than reliable about showing up.  At least at our table 10-15 dice is considered good, I tend to roll ten on most things...

I am epicly shocked this held up a main stay combatant. What are you guys fighting? I mean your pools run between prof rating 2 and 3, which puts at basically a street cop/gangester level. But you don't even have any meaningful armor on this sheet. How has this character ever survived a decent fire fight?

Well remember this is before run number one, where I did use edge, lots of cover, and got lucky to survive...After that I have bought armor, weapons, etc...I will post the current version that has spent Karma on increasing stuff etc...

This is the current version, he has had a few runs, one of the other players bought him the drone, we found most of the weapons...

That is a much more believable character to me. I still think your pool are low. But I'm ready to accept it. What no Foci?

I'm not the only one who buys a Ghoul as a contact!

The catch phrase I use are, "I need a double meat pizza delivered to xxx." For a body pick up.

No body = no crime!

Dan is the owner of a coffin Motel, called The Crypt.  Many of my characters have worked for him as security (It's on the edge of the Barrens)...and yes he eats well on us...
