Title: Wakshaani's SR5 Archetype Challenge.

Hi gang! There's been lots of talk of late about the archetypes, where they have mistakes, and a general "I can do better" vibe. Valid points in many cases! But, sometimes, the tables, they must be turned. As such... contest! Anyone who wants to enter can put together an archetype in the thread below, with a deadline of October 1st. (Technically the last second of September, Eastern Standard Time, as it rolls into October, for those who want to be technical.) ... On the 2nd, I'll announce the winner and give out a prize or two. What kind of prize? Dunno yet! I have a spare SR5 suppliment or two, and some older material, and could mail 'em off to the lucky winner(s). At the very least, I'll give out a couple of Gold Stars, and hash things out with the top guns from there.

BUT!

First, a look at the rules.

First, you'll be using the SR5 Core Book (with errata to make life easier), and only it. No Run Faster, Run-n-Gun, and so on. It's the basic archetypes, after all!

Next, you'll be picking from teh sixteen presented archetypes, rather than inventing a new one. So, Face, Street Samurai, and Decker are all valid, but not reporters, Rockers, and so on.

Third,  they gotta match the art! If one's an Ork with a cyberarm, then you gotta make an Ork with a cyberarm. If one's an Elf mage, you gotta make an Elf mage. "But that's not efficient!" Maybe not, but the art gets done first, so you gotta match it. Difficulty level +1!

Fourth, they have a skill cap ... a skingle skill at 6, or two at 5. EVerything else, including skill groups, has to be at a 4 or less. (egads!)

Lastly, show your work! Tack on a list of what's A, what's B, and so on, capped off with where all your Karma gets spent.

(If you want a bonus round, a write-up of 100-200 words to explain the archetype can seal the deal, but that part's not required.)

(( The archies are: Ork Street Sam with two cyberarms and cyber eyes, Dwarf covert ops specialist with datajack and cybereyes, Occult Investigator (human, no cyber), Street Shaman (Buff Elf without cyber), Combat Mage (Troll, no cyber), Brawling Adept (Human physad, no cyber), Weapons Specialist (Human with cyberarm), Face (Elf with no cyber), Tank (Troll with a 'jack), Decker (Dwarf with datajack), Technomancer (human), Gunslinger Adept (Elf, no cyber), Drone Rigger (Ork), Smuggler (Troll), Sprawl Ganger (Ork with cyberarm), Bounty Hunter (Troll) ... you can add some non-obvious cyber if needed, but if obvious cyber isn't shown, you can't take it! Yikes!))

That is a bit of an unfortunate restriction, I'm curious as to why though.  I mean, a single at 6 and the rest at four?  That's worse than a player would pick for their own character...  Shouldn't the example archetypes be intended to be used?  Why give them an arbitrary limit like that?  Especially for deckers and magicians, where they tend to need whole skill groups.

Otherwise (and even if the odd limitation isn't removed) I'm all for making some example characters.  Sounds fun!

Also I find it hilarious that we're the ones who gotta match the art.  I'm looking at you, "Totally a human, you guys" Combat Mage.

You shouldn't place a requirement that isn't in the rules for character generation for this edition.

I'm giving everyone the same set that I used to make 'em in the first place. :) (Mind, I only did half, but.) ... And the "One at 6, or two at 5" bit was part of that. On the plus side, you get all the rules in a finished form, which I didn't have. :D So, you won't be facing any restrictions that I didn't face. Hope that's fair!

I think that might be part of the problem that many have with the archetypes. While the ones who go for absolute efficiency will always pooh-pooh them, they really should have been tweaked to utilize the exact same rules and restrictions as custom-built characters once the final version (pre-printing) of the rules was established.

I think I'll try a Brawling Adept or Weapons Specialist. Likely the Brawling Adept, I've got an idea for a 'flurry of staff attacks' version while I'm stuck for ideas on what to do with the weapon specialist's cyberarm right now.

Unless we can enter more than once, in which case I'll do them both. I like the idea of presenting the Brawling Adept idea as a 'fast and furious melee attacker' build, while the Weapon's specialist is a all-round 'takes you out with one shot' type of character.

You can absolutely enter as many times as you want. That's part of the fun!

(Be forewarned.. if anyone doesn't have a build that aligns with the rules, like spending a million on cyberware, taking a Technomancer Echo that doesn't exist,  or having an Edge of 12 or whatever, the freelancers will line up and make nyeah-nyeah noises at you. Fair's fair, right?) :D

I'm gonna take a crack at some of these, but I'd like to echo the petition to shed the "One 6 or two 5s" requirement.  That was an old 4th edition thing after all.  Also, my first thought was to take a swing at the Decker, but I found she has the following skills as written:

Electronics GROUP 6
Cybercombat 6
Electronic Warfare 6
Hacking 7

And there's no way I can write a better Decker with those skill restrictions.

Electronics Group is hardly worthwhile, since all you really need is Software 1 and a spec in Data Bombs.

You probably want a spec in Matrix Search for Computer anyway too. And one in Hardware for Cyberdecks (for improved repairing).

But if you have group skill points and Stealth Group doesn't appeal, it could be worse.

you can add some non-obvious cyber if needed, but if obvious cyber isn't shown, you can't take it! Yikes!))

It's a good thing that the best ware isn't obvious. Given retinal smartlinks being a thing surgically inserted into your biological eye, I'd say the biggest downside is no datajack. And the biggest downside to the adept face is the book restriction. They just didn't have many options in the core alone.

As a youngster what passed for school was always easy.  Not easy, as in didn't need to study.  Easy as in the test questions answered themselves.  The right choice just highlighted, the blanks were filled in.  Then the visitors started showing up, Matrix Avatars without even being logged in.  Soon after AR and "the real world" blended together.  These days, the Sprites are your Allies.  The answers that show up are passwords.  You and your Sprites can get anywhere in the Matrix, and anything that uses power is your Allies playground.  Mr. Johnson calls you when he needs his rivals to have technical difficulties.  Runners call you when they need things to go smooth.  Hiring you and your Sprites is like hiring a whole gang to work the Matrix.

Non-obvious is fine. As long as it matches the art! So, if you have, say, a non-obvious cyberlimb, or all kinds of internal stuff, or bioware organs, no prob.

But it *does* mean that the Ganger needs a cyberarm and that the mages can't have cybereyes. (eek!)

I have a very...specific... idea of what a Technomancer does.  Other folks can easily come up with a different take.  I pretty much took my very straight forward Sprite Wrangler / Hacker build and applied the limitations in the OP.

The Gunslinger Adept also sneaks a few extra skill points in, so does the Tank.  The Combat Mage picture is obviously *not* Human.  Think of it as an editorial opportunity as well  :  )

Creators note: I normally would have chosen Puppeteer in my list of Complex Forms, but I don’t know if a new player would recognize the Limit Break/Edge trick… so I tried to keep it simple.

You might be able to find the archetypes that I *didn't* work on with subtle clues like that. :)

And, yeah, there were a TON of Trolls. Not the racial make-up I would have went with, but, art comes first.

(Not sure if I can share my proposal, but, I can give my breakdown. I had 16 Archetypes in all, with 8 being human and 8 being Metas. I was torn between either A) one of each gender or, B) three Elves, three Orks, one Dwarf, and one Troll, to project the racial balance in a subtle way, creating a sort of 'crowd scene' that would feel like the Shadowrun world.  Heck, *still* not sure which way's better, but I lean A so I could have a 50-50 gender split across the board. There were assorted ethnicities tossed around as well, with, again, about half whitey and half not, with Native Americans, black people, hispanic folk, Asians (both far east and near east), and I *think* I had a middle eastern person in teh mix as well. Been a few years and I don't remember for certain.)

More or less random gender, ethnicity and race is more natural with a small sample.  Deliberately aiming for a mix and balance is usually noticeable. 

And about impossible to tell what some Trolls and Orcs are anyway  : )

It's less organic, true, but I like having a broad-base of diversity out there to try and inspire people. (Heck, the Elf Go-Ganger was the bishiest thing you can imagine, because of COURSE he was.) It's easy to forget how simply seeing one's self on a page can draw somebody in. (See also: Nichelle Nichols opening a door for black women on TV and one-half of the first inter-racial kiss ever broadcast.)

It's just kinda nice.

This was a challenge.  Throwing 40+ Karma at skills was certainly different.  Cybereyes on a Dwarf....sheesh.  Would really benefit from more Edge, but the Augmentations really help this build along.

You could say you're the scalpel in the Shadowrunner tool box.  But that would be wrong, scalpels leave marks behind.  If it's a bomb or bug you need planted, Assassination or Sabotage, this is the Dwarf for your team.  Walk in front door and smile your way past the wage slaves, or slip in like a ghost through heavy security.  Locks, camera's, guards, all the same, just a minor obstacle that require patience and skill to overcome.  Need to make a hot exit?  Still your go to girl.  Combat, explosions and mayhem are all part of the package if necessary, but if you let her do her job, they won't be.  Why use a gun when a knife will do?  And why use a knife when a recording will do so much more...

I tried making a bioware focused elf face, let me know if any of the 'ware is too "obvious". I tried to pick all hidden 'ware and not go cyberzombie.   10 karma spent on Edge, 10 on Strength, 1 on nuyen, 2 for lockpicking and 2 for pilot ground craft.  Are specializations ok as part of the challenge? I tried to keep a lot of the same themes of the archetype face, but adding to the stealth/B&E and combat readiness. Upping Resources and Dropping Skills/Edge  from the archetype, lets the character excel at the archetype's priorities, be more combat ready, and default on a lot of skills better than the ones the archetype gave points to. Not the most efficient but maybe more fitting for higher powered starting games.

FYI with a locksmith pool of 10 you can get through a Rating 6 lock with just the lockpicks.  If you've got something else you wanted to shop for you could ditch some or all of the other lock-picking tools.  Like a Disguise kit maybe?

Hehe. Thanks Hobbes! I think there is already a disguise kit there. I did forget a subvocal mic though.  Not sure what else I want to buy if I ditched the B&E gear. Probably more bioware, but not sure what. Maybe a higher lifestyle and/or a car?

I have my entry to the technomancer coming up. I liked your build a lot, mine is coming along similarly. I am finding with the skills cap at basically 4, I am wanting to drop skills and Resonance for more Edge. With machine sprite diagnostics limited by skill rating, having higher rated machine sprites may not be necessary. Higher edge may help get more services out of sprites and help with the tough hacks that starting technohackers have more trouble with than starting deckers. Machine Sprites will eventually be helping with shooting (gun), healing (medkit), and hiding (armor), and perhaps a crack and fault sprite for help in the Matrix.

10 Karma spent on Strength, 10 on Nuyen, 6 on 1 rated skills, negative PQs balanced me 2 more karma, with 1 leftover for the start of play.

This was a challenge.  .....  Cybereyes on a Dwarf....sheesh. 
I was thinking the same thing about the build in general and the eyes.  I mean, you can't really tell by the pic those are cybereyes...  But anyway, I also wrote up the Covert Ops Specialist, but I went with more skills than cyber and the Narcoject pistol for her main weapon.  (It's freaking expensive to shoot Narcoject!)  I really wanted to fit in a smuggling compartment, but Money was real tight.  All in all I think she turned out ok.  I hated to rely on the Jazz, but it was the only good way to get a decent init, and it's just for when things get real bad.

It's successor Urban Brawl the same mantra holds true as well, and stuck as the idea to which a girl could overcome being born a Troll. Though coming from a lower middle class wageslave family, she was always excluded by her peers. But she found that the kids from just a few blocks away were more accepting of who she was & she learned that being able to take a hit helped her team win. That girl is all grown up today but the lessons she learned have stayed the same. She can take a hit and shrug it off where others would fall, and so she is still helping her team win in the much more dangerous games being played as an adult.

So of course this would be better as an Ork, since basically every Troll build is better as an Ork. Swap Resources & Metatype and have very similar Attribute line but an extra ¥135,000 really goes a long way. But the Art is the Art... so there you go, a DP of 20 with the Ingram & Soak Pool of 37 (with another easy +3 using PPP arms & legs, Gel Pack on the Armor Jacket using Run & Gun.) Narco would also really help get the full effect from the Kamikaze but a DP of 14 against at worst a Threshold(3) Test is easily made.

This was a challenge.  .....  Cybereyes on a Dwarf....sheesh. 
I was thinking the same thing about the build in general and the eyes.  I mean, you can't really tell by the pic those are cybereyes...  But anyway, I also wrote up the Covert Ops Specialist, but I went with more skills than cyber and the Narcoject pistol for her main weapon.  (It's freaking expensive to shoot Narcoject!)  I really wanted to fit in a smuggling compartment, but Money was real tight.  All in all I think she turned out ok.  I hated to rely on the Jazz, but it was the only good way to get a decent init, and it's just for when things get real bad.

Yeah, or if I could say it was a curvy elf, not a dwarf.  That "C" Priority for Dwarf is really an anchor for this build.  I wanted to go with Bioware instead of cyberware, but just didn't have the budget.  If I had complete freedom it would be an elf with a monowhip.  "C" Skills and "D" Meta plus stats more in line with what you're actually trying to do.  I was thinking of adding a Taser to her list of gear, just went with some stick and shock ammo.

I think I will give this a try, but I am not a fan of the skill limits, it is way to harsh on some of the ideas, such as any full mage, face, decker, or weapon specialist. But if I have to live with it I will.

Well, Decker is a bit of a challenge, as the core rulebook Decker has lots of skill 6's and a skill 7, so much higher to start with. In addition, they are a Dwarf, so we're already into needing at least priority C on Metatype. It does, though, have a few issues, including throwing only 5-6 dice on three combat skills, defaulting on perception, sneaking, only having one initiative pass half the time, having no Fake SINs or licences, and having no transport. Lets not mention the illegal hacking specialisation <grin>. The deck is also a bit of a liability, the decker is throwing large dice pools, but will usually be hitting the deck's limits.

So I've decided dropping skills to B, as it's a bit crazy otherwise with the skill limit, and upped Resources to A. So Resources A, Skills B, Metatype C, Attributes D, Magic E. If Metatype could have been C you end up a lot better decker, but we're told Dwarf.

Main changes are augmentation, could be cyberarms we're dealing with, though not obvious ones. So added Cerebral Booster, Synthetic cyberarm (main, left arm) of cheese, better cybereyes to include smartlink, reaction enhancers and wired reflexes to improve initative and driving. Then it's just a car, better medkit, loads of tools so she can use the skills, and programs. Not forgetting, of course, a better deck, Fake SIN and licences. Skills are rounded out a little, and only taking one firearm skill, not two. As a finishing touch, an extra point of edge. Code of Honor was broader than needed, so narrowed it, switched Codeslinger to Hack on the Fly as it's more commonly used, and rather than increasing hacking to 7 with aptitude, went for Juryrigger based on the knowledge skill flavour and Quick Healer. Was tempted to put deck in cyberarm, but Herolab was discounting it at used.

Even with the silly extra limit on Healing, is now throwing a lot of healing dice and can get 4 boxes healed, 6 for gunshots. Also 15 dice on shooting, 10 unarmed at 10P due to cyberarm cheese, has a little more armor, most dice pools higher or the same, and now always getting at least two initiative passes a turn. Unfortunately engineering a little lower, and decker skills a bit lower due to only one 6 or two 5's rule. Plus always handy to have a strong and agile arm for engineering!

I'm starting to like the skill rule, forced this from a narrow decker (as my own dwarf decker was) to a pretty decent decker/first aider/gun bunny (in a campaign at those power levels).

I've never done a physical adept before, but the picture really inspired this idea. I used Chummer5 so there might be an error in here that I missed.

Background:

It started not long after you turned 12. Some tough was thumpin' on your older brother. You wanted to help and the next thing you knew, he was on the ground. A week later, he came back with his friends and some weapons this time. The bullet that grazed you awoke the ferocity of Shark and you soon had dealt with these toughs. Though still proud to be apart of the streets, your relationship with Shark has led you to be much more than you ever dreamed of. Elven Face

This is an elven face with a bunch of inobvious cyberware ;-)
I prefer bio-adept faces myself but they won't work without some of the supplements.
I followed the one skill at 6 and the rest at 4 or below with only one specialization restrictions.

This chap is a rather good starting face focussed on Con (19) and subterfuge (Sneaking 18 in a city, with his Chameleon suit on).
He's not too shabby at Gymnastics (13) to aid in climbing, B&E etc. and he can sprint when the going gets tough (Running 7).
He's a decent Negotiator (17) and Impersonator (17).
He can also shoot a pistol straight (15) and pick a lock (16) or even a maglock (15).
He's a Native English and Sperethiel speaker and can chat very well in Russian (10) and Japanese (10)

The Ruger would load a few tracker tags and gel rounds (simple action to select the specific chambered round you want to fire).
The Beretta lives in the hidden arm slide.
He's got a pretty good load-out of B&E gear.

The Orc with two cyberarms.  I think I did the opposite of what I've done with other Arch type challenges, and lowered stats / raised skills.  Since the key skills were driven by the Cyberarm stats, I lowered the physical stats, pumped up mental stats, skills, and Edge, and went with the almost identical cyberware and gear.  Result is about the same dice pools for Shooting and Stabbing, but a more robust skill list, lots more Edge, more soak, and a just a splash faster.

Can you show where your Karma was spent?
Also, by my count, you're at 26 points of Attributes, not 24. I could be wrong (Or this could be where some Karma went!), but, it jumps out.

So here's my shot at the Brawling Adept. I quite liked the concept as it was described so have tried to keep the flavour similar.

Brawling Adept

Growing up on the streets of Chinatown is tough, but you were tougher. First you learnt to take your beatings, then one day your mind filled with the howl of Wolf and you learned to give them as well. The fact that by this time you had a guru probably helped as well. It was him, along with the influence of Wolf that set you down your current path. He taught that might doesn't necessarily make right and Wolf taught you that the pack comes first. The street people are your pack and you do everything in your power to protect them from other predators. Like Wolf you prefer to travel light when you roam and your life fits in a single bag. Just remember Wolf wins every fight but her last.

The Pitch

As a child growing up in the hard streets of the sprawl you quickly learned that violence was an answer, to the right question. For you, that question was how to do you protect your home and those you care for.?

Elven Face

This is an elven face with a bunch of inobvious cyberware ;-)
I prefer bio-adept faces myself but they won't work without some of the supplements.
I followed the one skill at 6 and the rest at 4 or below with only one specialization restrictions.

This chap is a rather good starting face focussed on Con (19) and subterfuge (Sneaking 18 in a city, with his Chameleon suit on).
He's not too shabby at Gymnastics (13) to aid in climbing, B&E etc. and he can sprint when the going gets tough (Running 7).
He's a decent Negotiator (17) and Impersonator (17).
He can also shoot a pistol straight (15) and pick a lock (16) or even a maglock (15).
He's a Native English and Sperethiel speaker and can chat very well in Russian (10) and Japanese (10)

The Ruger would load a few tracker tags and gel rounds (simple action to select the specific chambered round you want to fire).
The Beretta lives in the hidden arm slide.
He's got a pretty good load-out of B&E gear.


*thumbs up*  itty-bitty gear points.  Lockpick set is needed for all Locksmith tests (I don't think they're a collection of bent wires and hairpins anymore...).  Tracker rounds are in the basic book?

So someone somewhere will want to play an alchemist, and the Occult Investigator seems to be tagged with that role.  Here we have about the most utility I can get out of Alchemy and Detection spells while still covering the standard Mage capabilities.  I'm pleased with the way she turned out, I'll throw some back story in later.  Anyway, stacking buffs to hand out to the team either as Preparations and spells, info gathering both magic and mundane.  And the bread and butter Manabolt and a Browning Ultra-Power for mop up.

IMO Locksmithing would require a Locksmith Tool Kit at a minimum just like any other technical skill.  Lockpicks (or auto-picker) for mechanical locks would be an exception as you don't have to disassemble a mechanical lock to pick it.

Building and repairing items requires the right tools for the job. Tools must be bought separately for a specific skill (for example, an Armorer shop, a Disguise kit, a Nautical Mechanic facility, etc.). A kit is portable and contains the basic gear to make standard repairs.

Feel free to disagree but at my table you would need a locksmith tool kit if you want to take one apart to circumvent it.

Can't find a direct reference anywhere except the description of the lockpick set itself "They are necessary tools for picking locks." I guess I assumed this meant both key locks and maglocks. I'm with Jim, other technical skills require tools to perform their actions, it makes sense for lockpicking too.

Tracker tag is in core iirc.

The CRB doesn't have anything specifically called a tracker tag, but if you're looking for a RFID that can track something, that's just any wireless RFID, but most likely a security tag or stealth tag.  RFIDs built into bullets are tracker rounds and are in Run and Gun pg 55.

Modifying my old character (use to be human)

IMO, Guns Adept are always the most strange forward build.
He doesn't have much use outside of shooting somethings but when it's come to shooting somethings, nobody is better than him.
With 24 dices pool for semi-auto pistols, not much can survive his bullets.
Defiance EX Shocker is legal, you can carry it almost everywhere.
Streetline Special for passing MAD scan.
L36 is easy to conceal and have silencer.
Predator V is for tough job.
With high sneaking dice pool + chameleon suit + themal damping 6, he can infiltrate like a ghost, too.
Buy some rating 1 social skill with karma, to have 4 dices pool (enough to buy 1 hit) to give this build some utility and not to be totally useless in legwork.

Fastern8 & Hobbes are right my memory was foggy, tracker rounds are in R&G not Core.

Regarding lockpick set here's the description:
Lockpick set: These mechanical burglary devices have undergone only slight improvements in the last sev- eral centuries. They are necessary tools for picking locks.

This clearly indicates they are for picking mechanical locks (you can't "pick" a non-mechanical lock) and is in line with the current common understanding of what comprises a lockpick set.

I think you guys are thinking about a Locksmith Toolkit ($500).

I will edit the character to add the Locksmith Toolkit, remove the tracker rounds and just for completeness add in a pistol license and a Maglock Sequencer.

ok edited him to add in a fake Private Investigator license and a Fake Sin ratings 4 as well as a locksmith kit and a keycard sequencer.
Had to delete the tracker rounds, mnemonic enhancer and maglock passkey to make it all fit.

The purists will say that I cheated and they're right, but I say if you ain't cheatin', then you ain't trying.  And my little dip into the wetware has made me the fastest hacker you'll ever see.  Sure, I felt the loss, but what I lost wasn't nearly as much as what I gained and now I'm the best of both worlds.  Try me out, I've got bills to pay and aspirations to meet so I'll make sure your job is done quick and quiet and the mark will never even know we were there.

This evening's installment I've reverted to type as pretty much all my characters are Brujah.  Luckily Fighting and Socializing are a solid combo for Runners.  I really like the way this one turned out.  The Gunslinger Adept!  Assassin, Runner, Pistolero!  All around good runner.  Good at legwork, as all Assassins should be.  Scary, as Gunslingers tend to be.  And hey, Pistols!  Wouldn't even change all that much with more source books, or unrestricted skills even.

Why hire a gun when you can hire a magic gun?  Discrete, efficient, precise, lethal.  Paint a target on something, he'll put it down.  Need someone brought back alive, no problem.  Target gone to ground, he'll find them.  Your team need extra fire power for a run, the gunslinger is at the top of your list.  He may be arrogant, but he's worth putting up with.  And if you need to ask what a Goronagit is, you'll just get a knowing smirk.

Resonance Veil is low fade with broad applicability. Static Veil gives folks/sprites more time in the matrix, which is valuable for many kinds of runs. Puppeteer can be great, but I tend to view it as a last resort option, with the fade being so high. When up against a low dice pool opponent, you can succeed, but why take the damage when a sprite could probably hack through the target just the same. When against a high dice pool opponent, there is diminishing chance of success, especially for succeeding in getting the target to do a more consequential complex action. Resonance channel can be nifty, and also is not high fade. I think with skinlink now, many technomancers go for the direct connect route to limit noise anyway.

This guy turned out a lot better than I expected.  Kicked Magic up to A and Skills down to E but still got 28 skill points with the bonus skills from Magic.  Relatively strong with the magic and his knife, esp in astral space.  There were a lot more spells that would be useful esp considering he can sustain 2 without any penalty, but that's just room to grow.  He's definitely got some weak areas, but the healthy edge should let him survive long enough to shore those up.

Last build for tonight.  Another one that wasn't as tough as I expected it to be.  He's weak on init, but he's got cram for planned events and a decent edge for blitzing in surprise situations.  Drain pool isn't stellar so he'll need to rely on reagents to keep the force low on certain spells, at least until he gets centering and a foci for it down the road.  His combat spell dice pool is fairly substantial, better than I expected, so he may be able to afford a sustain penalty while in combat and still hit his limits.   
     You'll have to forgive me for the fun I had with the distinctive style NQ and the fluff at the end there.  :D  I was actually very tempted to give his Dragonslayer bonus to Performance (Rhyming), but since this is supposed to be a legitimate pregen I can't really expect most new players will want to RP that kind of quirk.  And besides that, he doesn't really have enough skill points to goof around with skills.

Rigger turn out to be pain in the ass to build (the shoping list, OMG the shoping list is killing me)

So, this is Troll Combat Mage I build in my spare time (take just 1/10 time to build compare to Rigger)

He does what a troll combat mage should does, throwing a spell while soaking damage like it's nothing.
With 18 dice for combat spell and 12 resist drain, he should cast force 6-7 Clout without much problem (Drain F-3).

For spell selection, I choose Blast + Clout because of Stun damage, no need to kill while we aren't getting paid to do.
Stunbolt is for fighting spirits, Heal is no brainer, Physical Mask and Extended Detect Enemies for utility.

With Focus Concentration 4, Force 4 Increase Reflexes should be sustain all the time to get 10 + 3D6 Initiative.
Cram and Jazz are for emergency use, like when you want astral stealth or go to somewhere with high background count.

With 15 Armor + 5 Body, he should survive a couple of shot.
Ballistic Shield is optional, bring it when it's not drawing much attention.

Pleanty of runners have snorted the first time the slim, acedemic woman handed them magical origami. Let people underestimate you, you never cared much what others think. Just makes it sweeter when they can't keep the suprise off thier face when they see what it is you can do.

Weapon Master.  A bit of a challenge.  Not as broad of a skill set as the original, but lost skills were quite limited in what they could actually accomplish with opposed tests and small dice pools.  Hopefully the expanded combat abilities make up for the increased focus.  Overall, Fifth edition really doesn't reward multiple weapon skills with how much they cost.  And the support skills (Demolitions, Armorer) being Logic based means you're coming up short somewhere stat wise.  You're likely coming up short in the social and legwork tests, and unfortunately Demolition and Armorer pools are still pretty mediocre.  Ah well, a grenade barrage, an independently firing Sniper Rifle, followed up by a knife to the face is going to have to be it's own reward.

== Description ==
The right tool for every job. To the Weapon Master every tactical situation has the correct application of force, and she has the right application every time. For low profile work she has weapons that need the 20th century equivalent to an MRI to find. For just walking around she'll have more options for violence on her person than an entire Go-gang. She doesn't have a heavy load, she has three. Each with variations on Ammo and configurations. And that doesn't count the different suits of Armor.

Having seen the worse the Sixth world has to offer, she is prepared for anything from Devil Rats to Dzo no qua. Don't mistake caution and preparedness for cowardice. Just because she's constantly updating your ARO with exit strategies and fallback points doesn't mean anything. Sometimes the best way out is to roll straight through to the other side, and if you're rolling heavy you want this woman on the grenade launcher.

Smuggler. 
Turned out to be a pretty fun build, though this is definitely one where I would have preferred to have BBCCE instead of the regular priority build.  He's got some weak spots but nothing that the first few runs couldn't fix.  I could have gone with an RCC instead of a boat, but what smuggler on the coast doesn't have a boat?  Besides that, the Avalon Firewall can't be beat for the price and a future purchase of a Stealth dongle will be a no-brainer to help hide all his drones.   I couldn't justify the Wasp on the books version (single seater), but I did get him a pair of Artemis Nightwings, so that could be fun for a covert insertion or getaway.

Smugglin' ain't hard if you know the people you're moving past.  You gotta speak their language, know their customs and for ghosts sake, you better be able to hold a conversation about the latest brawl game or that border guard will have nothing better to do then pick you apart with every last thing on his checklist.  That's why my glovebox has a well-worn hat for every single team in the league.  It just makes everything a little smoother when you're part of the team.  And if things go south, well that's what plan B is for and let me tell you, I made sure I'm damn good at plan B because there's no half-assing it when the lead starts to fly.  You want a clean getaway?  We'll make sure that any thoughts of pursuit leave their mind very quickly.

Finally finish Drone Rigger. Human with Ork Poser instead of Ork help a lot for this archetype.
I build her to be drone/driver hybrid instead of pure drone rigger.

For Combat Drones, I decide to build them cheap, just AK-97, basic sensor, not ever have a smartgun.
Because 5e drone are made of tissue paper, just 1 shot by anything and they will became a paperweight.
With cheap design, I can buy 8 of them. Remote Control 1 of them, the rest run in autopilot.
Doesn't mean you have to bring all of them on the run (you can't ever cram them all in Step-Van with passenger).
I buy 8 just in case some of them get destroyed.
Use FA mode and shooting from afar to avoid being targeted.

But all-in-all, drones are still fragile, all 8 of them will get destroy at one point (hope it's not your first run).
Counsel with your GM how you handle repairing drone, By RAW you can't repair a complete destroy drone but try to convince him/her to let you do it.

For recon drones, they SHOULD be impossible to detect/shoot-at (just a size of small bug).
So, they don't have maneuver autosoft, just stealth autosoft, we don't make a stunt move with them anyway, just fly from point A to point B silently.

For vehicle, Step-Van is a go-to vehicle to use, it will became your group mobile base of operation
Hyundai Shin-Hyung is for quick in quick out run.

And my take on the Decker.  Went with the low end cyberdeck.  It's another 50k to improve the limit by 1.  150k to bump it 2.  Sheesh.  Overclocker PQ would be quite helpful.  I went with piles of augments, Samurai lite with 'lete hacker skillz.  With proper arrangement of the Deck Attributes and the right program, limit 5 should workable.

Please continue the good work , and to Wakshaani or someone else with the skills ,
please provide an updated character sheet using photoshop or some pdf creation program,
so it looks like the handouts of sledge i once saw , or the pages in the main rulebook with the actual archetypes on them,

Bio

Started out as body guard for high value clients of Errant Knight. After a major client died while on the job due to planted explosives, Mac was put together by a Street Doc that owed him a major favor, but at cost of the contact (hence the bone lacing). After being framed for the clients death, Mac burned his SIN and has since taken to helping those who the Corporations harm and running the Shadows against to make some money on the side, especially if it let's him screw over EK.

Edited: Fixed error in Karma to money conversion, Starting Money, Karma, and Gear fixed. And skipped Log 2 (10 karma).

I kinda missed the old Detective. The SR2 version totally looked like a guy that would be in Law and Order: Seattle 2053, that you could imagine chewing Rolaids while he tried to go about solving the Sixth World’s crimes that the police ignored. SR3 also had the guy(and a pretty awesome pipe-smoking ork on top of it).

SR4 and 5 replaced this guy with the Occult Investigator-which while a cool concept, I don’t feel is the same unaugmented, un-magical fellow who relied on his wits and natural skills and abilities. It’s definitely never been the most powerful archetype, but I miss it, so here is my attempt to rebuild him for an SR5 Archetype.

Description: The Detective might be a throwback, but he knows what’s what on the streets. A fellow who never did get the touch of magic(though he knows a bit of it and has worked cases involving it), he has chosen to not go under the knife to augment his body, leaving him with what some might think is a disadvantage against the heavier-chromed members of the underworld. But the Detective’s style isn’t dealing with people toe to toe; he’s the type who tracks down leads, works his contacts, and uses his impressive swath of knowledge and broad skillset to get the job done. He knows what’s what in the underworld, and woe to the person who gets on the wrong side of him; while he’s not the type that would take you out for looking at him wrong, he has the knowhow and the connections to make someone’s life very, very hard. His old-fashioned ways may seem out of place at first glance, but that’s almost why they’re so valuable-it’s tough to find this kind of person anymore, and his rarity alone could be a valuable asset to those in the shadows.

I think I have the latest print edition of SR5, and it corrects the inherent limits and in one case the Street Samurai has a Fixer contact added.

Was this the problem (apart from them not being good examples) or were there more issues with them?

There were a few errors on the Archtypes.  And some were built with some holdover restrictions from 4rth edition.  As well as the artists thinking "We need more trolls". 

Anyway, Wakshaani was the creator on several of them and he's let us offer suggestions.    ;)

The biggest two errors, I think, are that the street samurai is way over on expenses (211,600 Nuyen to be precise), and the Edge of the combat mage should be 7, not 2.  Someone did a thread (http://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?topic=11847.0) fixing the errors.

The holdover restrictions from 4th edition also affected the power level (compare them to the skill ratings of the contacts for contrast - although in addition to under-powering the archetypes, they may have overpowered the contacts - the ones in Run Faster are toned down by comparison).

Brief note while using copy-paste to move stuff over for printing and ease-of-0read (I'm old! I hate reading heavy text on a screen. @set Wak=!Decker )

19,760 words. A normal book chapter is 10,000 words, or 20,000 for a heavy chapter. If I printed everything out as-is, sans editing, it'd be 93 pages (!).

You guys write a LOT. (Or, well, Chummer kicks out a wordy file. I think every entry here was made via Chummer at any rate.) ... keep up the good work! Best way to get better at anything is to keep doing it for practice. Who knows? This time next year, you might be a Freelancer too.

But it *does* mean that the Ganger needs a cyberarm and that the mages can't have cybereyes. (eek!)

I am not familiar with all of the house rules and rules as intended interpretations, especially when it comes to magic, but my general understanding of magic was that the mage had to see the target in a non-digital means.  Wouldn't cyber-eyes neuter the mage, since he or she is now viewing everything digitally?

I also haven't read this thread to its most current post (still on page 2), so if the answer is later, then don't skewer me yet! :P

So here's my shot at the Brawling Adept. I quite liked the concept as it was described so have tried to keep the flavour similar.

Brawling Adept

This one hit all the right buttons for me. Good design, nice backstory, qualities that were fitting, and something simple enough for a beginner to pick up as well as fun for a vet. Stoneglobe, drop me a PM and we'll set up your prize. Woo!

Wait, you can make Chummer kick out text files?  Can anyone point me at how?  I see options for html, and xml, or I can print to pdf, but I've been wishing there was a way to print it out as text!  I'd thought about entering this challenge, but formatting the character for the web page manually seemed like it was going to add a ton of time.  Ah well.

When viewing the chummer character sheet there is a drop down list in the upper right.  Text Only is one of the options.  The output can still be a bit messy, I try and clean up the skills and sort out the qualities a bit and add notes where karma gets spent.

A day without a thrill is a day not lived. And while risking yourself can be a thrill, it's not enough. You need to pit yourself against your equals, either in intelligence or fury, for it to feel real.

The Combat Mage is hardly be best spellslinger out there. But when the crud hits the fan, he'll be there beside you after any other mage you've ever known would be down or fled. While he can trade bullets with the best, he doesn't really need weapons - he is a weapon. Sometimes it seems he laughs all the harder going into a fight if he has nothing but his fists and mind to rely on.
