Title: Petition to Strip the Star Wars License from EA
Post by: Eric da MAJ on <11-29-17/1914:29>
Not the biggest problem in the world.  But a prime example of exploitative corporate culture that impacts much more than gaming.

Not an entirely accurate lead in article. EA has had a Star Wars franchise liecense in extension through their purchase of Bioware.

Bioware has had A SW liecense sincd I think 2001? With their SWTOR products.... which as I recall was a huge legal issue in property rights when Lucas Arts was sold to Disney.

No one is speaking in the terms the people who make discissions speaks in this article, so it will go nowhere.

Disney has already been paid by EA so they don't care. As far as Disney is concerned, its their product to fuck up on. EA will continue to hold the rights until another studio can offer more money. And there is not many studios with EA's pocket depth.

If The Mouse doesn't give a shit, The Mouse doesn't give a shit.  It's not like that possibility wasn't predicted.  But at least according to rumor, EA backed down a little because The Mouse was catching the bad PR fall out.

EA lost something like $3.5B in stock value over the past several weeks...I’m guessing guessing this fiasco will firce them to pause and rethink things. For a short time at least 😉

I hope so...

But EA is nothing but greedy.... so greedy they actually copyrighted a 'lootcrate' mechanism!

I'm just glad to see them take it for a change instead of always giving it.... without lube.

Agreed, I hope ALL the AAA publishers watch this closely and take heed.

One can hope, but honestly they probably won't. The likes of EA and other AAA publishers have been far removed from games consumers for decades. It takes the likes of the main stream news and a big kick in the stocks prices for them to even temporarily backtrack, spouting bald faced lies all the while. They simply wait for any furor to die down, maybe kill/reorg a production studio and go right back to it.

My hope is that at some point the AAA industry somehow manages to all do something despicably heinous all at the same moment, like say for the holiday season, and manages to burn down the whole establishment in one go. Otherwise the giants can easily afford to let any one of the band take a few beatings while the rest plow merrily on takeing everything the can from the consumer. Today it's EA, another day Activsion, another Ubisoft, ect. So long as they take there lumps in turns nothing will change.

This article has a pretty reasonable summary of the current financial fallout:

Politicians have always hated gaming for various reasons, despite most not being able to understand them properly.

Now too many of them will think gaming is Mortal Kombat in a Casino, even those tabletop weirdos.   >:(  Why can't they play something classic, like Monopoly, and lose friendships and get disowned by family like GAWD intended?
