Meet the Anzio Ironworks Ultra Long Range Sniper System...
(http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/images-20mm022standingatangle-fp.jpg) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anzio_20mm_rifle)
(Picture from The Firearm Blog (http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2007/10/09/anzio-20mm-vulcan-rifle-cannon/), used without permission)
2 meters long and weighing in at nearly 60 kilograms, it has a 5000 meter maximum effective range and fires 20mm Vulcan rounds from a detachable box magazi...um...clip. It sits somewhere between an assault cannon and a sniper rifle.
Here's my first stab at statting it out, primarily because I want to buy one for my Gnome Sniper:
Sniper Rifle | Damage | AP | Mode | RC | Ammo | Availability | Cost |
Anzio 20mm | 10P | -5 | SS | 1 | 3(c)* | 20F** | 11,500¥ |
* The Anzio 20mm uses Assault Cannon ammunition.
** Despite the Anzio's range and power, it is marketed and sold primarily as a civilian sport and hunting rifle. Some jurisdictions classify it as legality 'R' at the GM's discretion.
It comes equipped with a bipod, and a shock pad. The only barrel accessories that can be mounted on the Anzio are a specialized flare/sound suppressor for 3200¥ or a muzzle brake for 1800¥ which provides 2 points of recoil compensation.

That damn gun is almost 3 times the size of that gnome...lol. Do what you do.
-
I would say that in SR terms that is an assault cannon, only reason their calling it a sniper rifle is that the term assault cannon doesn't exist IRL and they don't exactly want to call their civilian weapon an anti tank rifle.
-

I shall now make a Gnome NPC named "Bipod". :P
-
OMG I want it.
-
:D Fun. Bipod could double as your spotter / additional ammo bearer.
See...I guess its classification depends on the round type...If its usual round is meant for a pin point target such as a Barrett, I'll call it a sniper rifle. If its meant for an area target like a Mk-19, then I'd say assault cannon. I suppose you can just call yourself a vehicle sniper. :P
The over pressure from that must be enormous.
-
I believe an accurate description is "Anti-material Sniper Rifle". "Vehicle Sniper" is pretty good too.
In SR terms, it is somewhere between an Assault Cannon and a Sniper Rifle.
A "Sniper Cannon", maybe?
And keep in mind, it is still lethal against soft targets, It's just overkill. Against a walking-tank Troll in Mil-Spec armor, it is barely overkill.
Also, the grip, stock, trigger and such (the "user interface") of this gun are designed to be very similar to the AR-15 so it doesn't require any special training. It should still use the Longarms skill.

Weapons like this have been around since World War II (e.g. the Finnish L-39). Assault cannons in Shadowrun 'feel' more like payload rifles than anti-material rifles, and this seems more like the Barrett Model 121 (Arsenal, p. 28).
If you want to "build" a Shadowrun anti-material rifle, I recommend changing any sniper rifles stats by: +2 Damage, -1 AP Mod, and x2 cost just as if was firing High-Power Rounds (War!, p. 156). with High-Power Chambering (War!, p. 156). Maybe crank up the stats a bit more and drop the Ammo to 3 or 5 to season to taste.
Strictly by canon you would probably be using Anti-Tank Rounds (War!, p. 156).
(I'm personally ambivalent at best to most of the War! stuff,, but it keeps things simple to reference it until something better comes along.)
-
I'll approach this from gameplay:
Those stats are a tad low for 5th. So were I you, I would look in that direction.
-
Its stats currently are SR4. SR5 is probably easy: Make it 16P damage.
-
meh, the original is still the best:

Psst, I didn't need a hint. ;D

I did :P
It's pretty, though.
-
Too bad one of the major complaints about it was broken collarbones.
-
I believe it. That's probably why the Anzio has a muzzle brake that appears to be roughly the size of a toaster.
Although if you watch the videos of it being fired, the guys still moves back about a foot every time he pulls the trigger...

There's a lot of Anti-Tank Rifles from that era, which would eventually become Anti-Material Rifles of modern day. The US, however, was smart... "Why use a bolt-action rifle when we can just put it into a machine gun?" ;D

I observe with no small amount of national pride that this is a very American sentiment.
"Well, we've made a man-portable gun that can shoot basketball-sized holes in an armored vehicle. What now?"
"MORE DAKKA!!!!!!"

UMM, fifty cal machine gun isn't man portable out side of GI Joe.

The United States Marine Corps would like to have a word with you about this.

Citation needed.
(If you're thinking of the M82 or M107 it's not a machinegun 8) .)

Note the entry about the M3 tripod. The MOS is 0331, the breakdown is (IIRC) one man gets the receiver, one man gets the barrels, and one man gets the tripod.

Ah. I thought you were implying that Marines lug them around like assault cannons :)

I thought they did! :P
I heard some rumors about power armor that would let people do that, but as far as I know it's still in prototype and they were having problems powering it.

No sir. The part of the statement I wanted to refute was about being man-portable. Nothing more, nothing less.

The bit about GI Joe should have been quite obvious hint that i used "man portable" in the sense that one man carries and shoots the gun by himself.
Obviously anything that can be broken down to pieces small enought for a single man to carry is man portable in general sense.

You're probably thinking of the HULC lower body exoskeleton. One idea was to install a pintle mount to the frame that could hold a heavy weapon but I suspect that's just a "yeah, you could do it ... BUT ..." And the problem isn't powering it per se. It's keeping it powered in the field for 8-24 hours without everyone needing to carry so many batteries that you cancel the load carriage provided by the exoskeleton.
As Shadowrun doesn't really deal with equipment weight, such items are a bit of an edge case, mechanically. Such a mount would count as a mobile tripod (SR5, p. 433) and it would have its own carrying capacity (SR5, p. 420) and hmm.. That's about it.
-
And for the record, I was saying it was man-portable before they added the additional DAKKA. My statement didn't address the man-portability of the weapon after the DAKKA was added.
That said, the ensuing discussion was entertaining and informative.

Bah, we got the 207x's now anyways (depending on SR4 or 5) ... cal .50 is for ppl that cannot afford/source decent Lasers and Gauss Rifles :p
-
Don't rule out standard bullets too quickly, they still have their place especially if someone is looking to avoid the flashiness of an energy discharge.

The flashiness is pure BONUS ... and do not stare at my rainbow-mohawk too hard ;)
Apart from that you are totally right that a Sniper should do all things possible not to be seen.
So if the "Rule-of-Cool™" does not work with your GM you should choose a "less-flashy" option ;)
Nonetheless: The Thunderstruck is just sooo cool ... one day one of my chars will have one (if only for range shooting) ... even if I have to wait for Shadowrun 14 :p
-
Yeah thunderstruck is the uncontested king of sniping weapons.
But laser on the other hand utterly suck for sniping, their strickly CQC weapons.
