Drone with smartgun equipped weapon needs Smartsoft to get the benefit of the smartgun system.

Rigger w/smartlink jumped into drone  with smartgun equipped weapon- does the rigger need smartsoft to get the benefit of the smartgun system?

That's my interpretation, though I would appreciate an official answer as well.

Nope, if you have smartlink implanted, you can use a smartgun equipped weapon to its full potential, no matter if you hold the gun or if you remote control it.

This used to be easy, sinc ethe link required going through a cord. These days, it's more than your brain handles the sensory input, and in this cas ethat input's from a drone. My gut instinct says,

"The operator needs a Smartlink. If a Drone, this is a Smartsoft. If a rigger, it's a Smartlink."

In essence, if the DRONE is making the rolls, it needs the soft.
If the RIGGER is making the rolls, she needs a Smartlink.

Isn't smartlink just visual input such as ammo count, wind speed, distance from target, etc? Does having low-light installed in your eyes help you see through a drone's sensors? I don't see why having smartlink implanted in your eyes affects what a drone is capable of.

It doesnt, it what information is transfered through

that's also a good point...

I honestly would like the option for smartsoft to be run on a commlink and just use an image link, and get the benefit of the smartgun. It's kinda silly that a tiny, tiny thing (you can put it into a contact lens for crying out loud) can do stuff a commlink can't do with the right software + image link.

I had plans for allowing commlinks to run certain software applications and programs but it didn't work out.

Maybe in the future...

I have to agree with this; a rigged drone  is being controlled directly by your brain, whatever cyberware in your eyes doesn't enter into the picture. Either using a smartgun while rigging requires smartsoft, or it's built into the control rig and doesn't require anything special.

Protip: bring back linguasofts that can be run on commlinks. With Google Translate being a thing, everyone and their mother houserules that commlinks can run linguasofts anyways, so it would be nice if you made it official whenever 6e comes around.

Well, you could think of it like this:

The information that is transmitted by the Smartgun system (in the gun) is normally interpreted by dedicated software/hardware that is run by the Smartlink vision enhancement. The reason why it is required to be in the vision enhancement and can't be run by just a commlink is because of dedicated firmware in the vision enhancement that does things like tracking head movement to line up your sights etc.

For a Drone, the information that is being transmitted by the smartgun system is just data that the drone doesn't know what to do with if it isn't running the Smartsoft program. That program lets the drone understand the data and allows it to function as if it has a Smartlink. Without it, the drone's dogbrain just doesn't know how to utilize the extra data.

The way I see it, for Riggers, you have two options. 1) The Smartsoft system (or something equivalent) is still required. The program helps translate the data from the smartgun system and aids the Rigger as normal. 2) Because it is running through the computer system and being translated through the Control Rig for the Rigger, no extra software is required. The information is translated appropriately for a Rigger that is jumped in and allows them to always function with the effects of a Smartlink as long as the gun has the Smartgun system.

Not sure which way is meant to be the intended rulings, but those seem like the most likely options to me.

And as far as Linguasofts go, I would say, yeah a commlink can probably do some translations for you, but a Linguasoft specifically allows the user with a Skilljack to act as if they actually know the language. Running translation through a commlink is going to be much more clunky.

And by "clunky" I presume you mean "literally AR subtitles".

Holo Sight:

Offers the same benefits as a laser sight without the
red trail of light giving away the position of the shooter.
In addition, the holographic (or holo) sight can display
basic information such as range to target or remaining
ammo without the wielder using AR.

Sure, that might work for listening to a language, though it would probably be a delayed response (to account for translation time), probably about the speed of a Closed Captions on live news, maybe a little faster with advanced tech.

But that doesn't handle about half the function of a Linguasoft which is that it also allows you to speak the language. That would be much harder to accomplish.
