Title: [IC]6-02 Amber Waves of Grain
Post by: biotech66 on <04-26-16/2334:16>
Your commlink buzzes right in the middle of your lunch, you see “Incoming Message: Sid Gambetti – I hear you need a job to keep the cash flowing. Well buddy, I got something on the books today that needs a steady hand and closed mouth, and I thought I could help you out with this sweet run. If you’re interested, I’ll be at the Flapjack Palace at 4pm.” The message ends with the address of a waffle house, looks like you have a few hours to get to Fullerton

Who's heading to Fullerton and how do you get there?

Vexboy stares blankly at his metalink for a few minutes trying to process it. "A message. From a Johnson... I got a message... from a Johnson." Vexboy almost burst at the seams with joy and would have jumped for it.... if his living quarters weren't a sleep tank. This sobered him. It wasn't so bad... it was... roomy. Drafty but roomy. He kept all his possesions in a sleep tank that was password sealed but God help him if someone figured out the password... but he had bigger things to worry about then a potential break in and that was saying something indeed. He shuffled around and got his nice clothes. He got out and waited for his turn in the extremely cold shower... that only lasted 60 seconds. But it was the best he could do. He got changed and drew his backpack and put his switchblade in his pocket. He took his credstick and put it in his other pocket and took out his helmet. He was in the mirror of the restroom. "Ok Vincent... Vexboy. You can do this... your folks did this, you can do this. Just breath in and out. You survived public school. Whats shadowrunning got on that?"  He got on his Dodge Scoot and wanted to get there early. Around 3:30 pm.

When the message arrived on his flip-phone style Sony Emperor, Pepperface read the screen for a moment with his obvious green cybereyes before instead forwarding it to the Hermes Chariot humming away in his right biceps, throwing it up on an ARO. It joined a sea of shimmering brothers and sister there, in the still air of Pepperface's study. AR windows crowded him at all sides. Here, several windows of code and palettes of textures for a new skin for his Matrix persona. There, a visual cacophony of some weird Japanese Zen dream of a cartoon. Others held Internet forums, 24-hour Horizon-approved news channels, fragments of data bomb and physical bomb designs. Pepperface enjoyed the visual noise while he worked, the swarm of AROs around him as he let the currents of his bioware-enhanced genius flow where it may.

He took the time, however, to close a few nearby windows and enlarge Sid Gambetti's message. He didn't know a "Sid Gambetti," but if he could contact this commlink then that meant Mr. Twist had vetted him. And besides, a job was a job. Pepperface finished up his work for an hour or so, then gathered his things to leave. He briefly considered whether or not the "steady hand" in Mr. Gambetti's message was a reference to his demolitions expertise... but not wanting to drive around with live explosives if he didn't have to, he decided to leave his few remaining ready-mades behind.

Stepping outside of the modest but comfortable home Mr. Twist had arranged for him during his stay in Chicago, Pepperface made his way to his car. It was a light orange Chrysler-Nissan Jackrabbit ripoff, a Xiao-Saturn Commuter Plus. The three-wheeled vehicle was little better than a golf cart, but it allowed Peter Giroux, prodigal son of Horizon, to better blend in as a faceless wageslave in another city. Once he'd wedged himself into the cramped driver's seat, he brought up an AR with directions to the Flapjack Palace. With traffic, it looked like he'd get there just a bit before 4 PM.

Marcus kept chewing as he read Sid's message on the physical screen of his burner link, the bland taste and texture of the ration bar leaving much to be desired.

"At least it doesn't taste like soy," he thought to himself as he stood up, crumpled the empty wrapper into his hands, and then deposited the only remains of his lunch into his pocket for safekeeping. There was nothing of note in the apartment located just south of 290 on the border of the CZ to the east and Westside, well, to the west, but it didn't hurt to be careful.

>>Sid Gambetti.<<

The message to his only real contact in Chicago was short and to the point, with no effort wasted on pleasantries. Dr. Tate had given him his life back, and they had developed a sort of repertoire over the past several months. But the whole thing was mostly a business arrangement; the good doctor fed him what information he had access to, and Marcus did the jobs that were sent his way with no questions asked.

As he waited for the reply, Marcus slipped on his overcoat and gloves and performed a final check of the spartan room to ensure he hadn't missed anything. The machine pistol was well hidden in its holster under his left arm, three spare magazines under his right; all fully lisenced.

"Could take 290 east, go through the zone if the patrols are light, shoot north on 90 or 41." He considered his options as he got to the three seater off-road vehicle he'd been given. The thing had no electronics at all, a good foot and a half of suspension travel, sturdy wheels, and was built to take a licking and keep on ticking. It reminded him of the old Desert Patrol Vehicles the old US of A had supposedly used, though this particular model was a Thundercloud Morgan.

For a moment he forgot all about the job prospects and imagined what it'd be like to drive through the deserts of Africa, jumping the dunes and stopping to see the wildlife. He remembered the flat vids they'd shown him during his time in the lab; stuff from the 20th century, from before the Awakening even. It had been some documentary or another, and the soldiers in it had been driving buggies much like his own. "Minus the heavy machine gun and rocket launchers, of course."

The low growl of something in the shadows nearby brought the young man back to reality, and once he'd verified the sound was not an actual threat he finished stowing his gear. The chameleon suit and assault rifle both went into the smuggling compartment after everything else; he'd quickly learned that a vehicle with no windows was seen as an invitation to help themselves by the dregs of this city, and he'd had to teach more than a few of them a lesson. Some of them would never steal anything again, he'd seen to that personally.

"Might as well just cut north as the crow flies" he decided as he climbed in. The engine roared to life, and with full spin on all four wheels he pulled out onto what was left of the inner city streets, heading for Flapjack Palace to perform pre-meet reconnaissance well in advance of the scheduled meeting time.

Alerted to the message on one of her Metalinks, Skate is immediately confused as to who would have gotten the number. "Sid Gambetti...? I don't know a Sid... He must have gotten the number from someone I've worked with before." Finishing her lunch, she looks around at the run down kitchen she's eating in, in the run down house she's living in, and concludes that keeping the cash flowing is indeed something she'd interested in. "4pm is obnoxious though, why couldn't we have met over dinner?" she complains to herself. It's not something she hasn't had to deal with before, but it complicates things.

Taking some time to make sure her weapons are in good condition, she looks over the assortment and decides to leave the rifle at home today, "It's just a meet with the Johnson, shouldn't need anything long range." After dressing in her armored jacket, she puts in her contacts and earbuds and prepares to head out. Running through her weapons, she confirms the collapsible hatchet is concealed in her jacket pocket and the holdout is secure on her ankle. The pistol at the small of her back always comforts her, but she doesn't really feel prepared till she picks up the Enfield and wraps it up in some canvas. "Can never be too prepared, 'just a meet with the Johnson' or no."

Finally ready, she puts on her cloak and heads outside. She stops for a second to admire her Nodachi sitting by the curb, "At least noone's tried to steal it in awhile..." before grimacing in distaste and raising the hood of her cloak. "I don't know why I keep forgetting, it's only been two years since that botched orthoskin upgrade left me with this drekking sun allergy." Stowing her wrapped shotgun in the secret compartment on her bike, she swings her leg over the seat and settles in. Pulling away from the house, she keeps one eye on her surroundings while checking the map for the best way to get to the meet. Finally opting for the 14, she guns the engine and takes 14 down to Fullerton, arriving a couple minutes before 4.

Kereina was working under the auto-lift in her shop when the vibration of her commlink in her pocket alerted her to an incoming message. The C-Pop music blasting around the shop would have drowned out any kind of audible alert, but she liked to work that way, the upbeat tunes always seemed to keep her moving. She slides out on the castor wheels of the under-car creeper, grabs a rag to wipe her hands on, and pulls out her comm.

'Hmm, work opportunity huh,' she muses to herself as she takes a bite of the already half-eaten synthbread and krill sandwich, already covered in dirty fingerprints. She could use the extra cash, this junker in her shop is the first job she's gotten repairing anything in a week and half. She decides it would be best to see what the Johnson has to offer. Kereina takes a few minutes to finalize what she was working on, with the car, and then changes into her usual gear. No need to go high class with her dress and Mortimer coat, it was a waffle house after all, and that would make her stand out more than help her in this situation. She opts for the Urban Explorer Jumpsuit, and quickly stows her Remington Suppressor and extra clip under the seat of the Stepvan.

She also grabs a few extras, her assault rifle and chameleon suit go into the smuggling compartment. She also snags her fly-spies, setting one in the back of the van, and stowing the other into the smuggling compartment in her right thigh. Satisfied that she has enough, she takes one more look around the shop, decides to grab one of her Roto-Drones to store it in the back as well, before locking up and heading to the meet.

The van is painfully slow to her, but she knows it will be less conspicuous than flying through the streets in her Shin-Hyung, and she can carry more this way. She arrives about a half hour early and pops the back door of the van, letting one of her fly-spies flap up and out to scan the area around the waffle house from a better vantage point.

Another call for a job already?  Alf is still getting over what he saw astrally down in the sewers, it was ... no, best not to dwell on it.  Maybe someone from that last job passed along his contact info to this new, Sid Gambetti, fellow?  A good recomendation, that was a much better thing to think about!

He checked the time, and Grid Guides estimate of the time to get to his destination.  Good, he had a bit of time before he had to leave, he could wait for his laundry to finish drying before he headed out.  And since he had a bit of time, he should make preparations.

With a familiar effort of will he aligned his aura with the local mana fields and coalesced an increase intuition spell on himself.  The spirits were in a good mood today, apparently, and the spell came in strong and without tiring himself out.  Hoping his good fortune continued, he reached out to ask a plant spirit to lend him his aid ... he mentally stumbled as he sent out his request, and he felt his heart sink at the imminent failure, but to his surprise the ragweed spirit responded anyway, and the process was smooth and not tiring.  He let the spirit wait deep in the astral until he might need it, and let his thoughts return to the mundane plane.

Well, that was a good start to things -- he wondered what all was going to go wrong to balance things out?

He finished his noodles, got his dry clothes from the laundromat, loaded his good first aid kit and toolbox into The Drekmobile, then let GridGuide get him to his destination.  Some Jap-pop on The Drekmobile's tinny stereo, some sun pushing through the haze, and a chance to look at the architecture of the Chicago sprawl -- life maybe wasn't perfect, but it was pretty good.

"I wonder what the odds are that I drive through a background count that kills my spell?  Something has to spoil this, my luck never stays this good for long!"
Cast Increase Intuition Force 5:
- 11d6 = 5 hits  Increase Intuition (http://orokos.com/roll/396886): 11d6t5 5
   - drain is F-3=2, roll 10 dice get 2 hits vs drain 2 (spell) (http://orokos.com/roll/396889): 10d6t5 2

Summon force 5 plant spirit with noxious breath optional power:
- 10d6 = 1 hit summon F5 plant spirit (http://orokos.com/roll/396892): 10d6t5 1
   - spirit's resistance 5 dice = 0 hits spirit resists (http://orokos.com/roll/396894): 5d6t5 0
   - drain of 2, 15 dice = 4 hits drain resist (summoning, 2) (http://orokos.com/roll/396895): 15d6t5 4
Despite the trip being slower than Grid Guide had promised, he still approaches the restaurant with enough time to do a quick astral scan for anything out of the ordinary, then wander in a few minutes early.  Waiting for someone to come seat him -- as usual they are slow to notice him -- he scans the place.
Gear load-out is as listed on Alf's character sheet.  Most notably he is wearing armor and has a couple of shuriken in a case in a pocket, but no fire-arms.
At various times, you all make your way to the Flapjack Palace in the middle of nowhere.  You enter and the waitresses welcome you with Welcome to Flapjack Palace, home of the Six Pound Flapjack, may I take your order?, then you see Sid waving you to come to the back for a little privacy. The waitresses give you a dark look as you head to the back and you feel like you need a bath. When you get to the table, Sid waves you to a chair and pushes a stack of pancakes towards you. He is watching a boxing match on a large trid unit, whenever someone on the screen hits the deck, his forced, gutteral laughter sends bits of pancake and beer across the table
As soon as the last chair is filled Sid turns the trid off and turns to you all, and in the most New York accent you've ever heard says Thank you for coming.  As I mentioned in the message, I’ve got a real nice job lined up for people with your skills he makes eye contact with each of the runners as he explains Are you up for some property damage? I got a client who wants some stuff destroyed in a special way, and they will pay for it in cold hard credsticks. It ain't wetwork, but the customer doesn't care if people die or get hurt, it's just not what they are slapping the money on the bar for. You guys interested? Have you guys even met before? Hey, I gotta take a leak, why don't you talk it over, I'll be back in a mo    As soon as he steps away from the table his professional attitude slips away as he swaggers through the restaurant, staring at the cleavage of the serving girls on the way past.

What do you want to do before he gets back, and what do you want to say to him when he gets back?

Vexboy looks around at the people around him and felt small. He was easily the youngest... "Hello." He said trying to see what would happen... he also realized he was dressed like some... preppy kid. "I am a gunslinger adept."

Pepperface walks into the Flapjack Palace looking a bit overdressed in his navy blue Actioneer's suit. Hopefully any figure he was a sarariman just getting off work. The stiffness of his right arm, where he could feel his hidden gun secured in its slide, was a tactile reminder that he was not.

He sat down with Sid and listened to his proposal once the others runners joined. He frowned thoughtfully as SId lumbered away to give them time to talk. "For those of you who don't know me, the kids call me Pepperface. Don't ask why," he muttered, a little testily on that last bit. "I'm a demolitions expert, so I think I understand why I'm sitting at this table. Of course, this mention of stuff getting destroyed in a 'special way' makes me a bit nervous. I want to hear more about that before I agree to the job. In addition to supplying and setting up explosives for a job like this, I can also be our Matrix support. What about you all? What are you doing here?"

He listens to the other runners he's not familiar with describe their abilities, keeping his expression pretty neutral and unimpressed throughout. When Sid returns he asks him, "You mentioned your client wants this property damage in a 'special way.' Care to elaborate?"

Arriving a good hour before the meet, Marcus had plenty of time to case the joint. It was, sadly, just a pancake house, and after a short while spent watching people going in and out from a nice shady spot across the road his mind started wandering and he checked his commlink for a response from Doc.

"Huh, nothing. He's usually Johnny-on-the-spot when it comes to these things." With a few taps on the screen of his commlink, he began a search for the name Sid Gambetti but somehow ended up on a site about cage fighting. He never could seem to find anything on the Matrix unless it was the ad for whatever latest gizmo Renraku had created, or some new disgusting foodstuff made by Aztechnology. Sighing to himself he wasted a few minutes playing Miracle Shooter before realizing he should be watching the restaurant, not goofing off playing games.

The next half hour went by relatively quickly, and he spotted a few individuals who might be packing heat but nothing out of the ordinary. Probably just wageslaves wanting some "protection". "Hah," he thought to himself with a sneer as he began walking towards the restaurant. "As if a holdout would do anything to deter someone like me". There had been a time when firearms had frightened him, but that time had come and gone; these days, he'd stare down the barrel of a Ruger Thunderbolt with relative confidence he could take out the triggerman before his opponent had time to even react. As he walked in the doors his eyes scanned the interior quickly, and he gave the waitress a cold glare as he walked past her to where some guy is waiving at him.

"Are you Mr. Gambetti?" he says as he reaches the table, and as the man nods he takes a seat and waits for the speech. When the pancakes and beer laced spittle starts raining across the table with the mans laugh, however, Marcus calmly considers strangling the guy with his own tie. "A Johnson is a Johnson", he reminds himself while still musing over the many options for ending the annoying mans life.

More people file in and sit down at the table, and Marcus fixes them all with a stare in turn. Sid turns off the trid and asks "Are you up for some property damage?", and Marcus smiles as Sid continues laying out the details of the job. When he excuses himself for a moment Marcus stands up and looks around, checking his surroundings for signs of an ambush. Satisfied that Mr. Gambetti isn't actively trying to screw him over at the first meet, he nevertheless remains standing as a kid just introduces himself as a gunslinger adept with no name. He chuckles as a second person calls himself "Pepperface" and precludes further questions with a simple "Don't ask." "Gotta be a story there..."

"Marcus. Close protection specialist" he says quietly before continuing. "I'd like to know who the target is and to what extent we need to destroy whatever it is we're going after. Mr. Gambetti mentioned the client doesn't care if lives are lost, but I'd still like to know if there might be an incentive for taking out certain people." He waits for the rest of the table to make their introductions, and for Sid to get back.

When the Johnson walks back and gets seated, Marcus waits for Pepperface to make his question, then follows up with his own. "Who owns this piece of property?"

After Sid replies, he asks his followup and then remains silent. "You mentioned that the client doesn't care about civilian casualties; are there any incentives for taking out key individuals?"

It takes a bit, but Alf finally figures out who their Johnson reminds him of -- Mark Elver, a field paramedic he'd worked with back in the Sioux military.  The orc had seemed pretty disgusting at a personal level, but Alf had seen put his life on the line getting people out of bad situations, and he'd kept people alive who shouldn't have made it.  He reminds himself "In other words, just because I don't like him doesn't mean he isn't good at his job."

As introductions start happening he grimaces.  He hates this sort of stuff.  He has been practicing over the last couple of weeks, so he sits up as tall as 5'6 can and does manage to provide "You can call me Alf, or Alpha if you really want to suck up to me.  I'm a mage healer, I guess you could say.  I did time in the military, so I at least know safe handling protocols for explosives -- Mr. Pepperface,  if you ever need anyone to help hold things while you set up the bangers, let me know."

After a moment he adds "There are a lot of gangs in Chicago that would destroy property for a lot less than he'll need to pay us.  I'd like to know what the catch is.  But I'm terrible at negotiating type things, if I start pushing we'll probably get paid less not more, so I hope someone else is better at that talking stuff.  And speaking of things I'm no good at, any of you any good at figuring out things like whether he bugged the table to listen in on us?"

Stepping into the pancake house Skate pauses inside the doorway to push her hood back and scan around the room, aware that shes receiving some stares from the other patrons, but not caring. Seeing a man in the back frantically waving at her she assume that this must be Sid. Noting that there were already some others seated at the table she figures this isn't going to be a solo job. Striding to the back she flicks her cloak back and sits quietly on one of the available chairs. Once the man starts talking he confirms that this is the Johnson and it is indeed a group job. "Property damage without wetwork? Seems too easy... but as long as it pays, easy is fine. 'Special way' sounds ominous though..."

As the others introduce themselves, Skate mentally tracks the roles, "Guns, explosives, combat, medic, seems fairly standard, if overkill for what he described..." Seeing it's apparently her turn she says, "I'm Skate. I usually end up shooting things. The farther away, the better. From what you've all said, this seems like way more muscle than is needed for what amounts to vandalism... There's got to be something else going on." "If it's really what he says, I would much rather just do this on my own... and collected all the money!"

Once the questions from the other runners at the table have been addressed, Skate waits for a lull and chimes in, "So what's the real deal? Why didn't you just hire me? One person can do a lot of property damage with propelled explosives..."

Finding the man inside the restaurant was the easy part, large man, waving like an idiot, made her wonder what kind of cover they should be worried about. Kereina mentally pulls up a window on her imagelink to show what the airborne fly-spy is seeing outside. Satisfied that nothing is of immediate danger she sits at the table and listens to the Johnson's spiel.

Seems like an easy enough job, but I'm a little concerned about what his "special methods" are. Is there something we aren't being told here? she asks the table in general when Mr. Gambetti / Johnson gets up from the table. Her voice is heavily accented both by her Japanese accent and her tusks protruding slightly over her upper lip from her lower jaw.  As for who I am, my name is Kereina, I guess you could say I specialize in remote reconnaissance and fire support. I have done security work before, but nothing so far as your military training, Alf.

The others all seem competent, maybe even over-qualified for the job. Having no real background in negotiating terms, she settles back to see what answers come from the several questioned asked of Mr. Gambetti.

Sid returns after your conversation, looks around, and listens to all your questions.  He then starts in with that psydo-mafia accent you've been listening to from him saying,
Look, you know the drill.  I won't give specifics, but I can tell you the basics.  The run involves killing some plants out in the boonies.  It's gotta be done by 8pm tomorrow for reasons that will be obvious once the runners have the details, and one person ain't gonna cut that mustard.  You need some finesse, capeesh?  it's gotta be in a special way, it's not just dropping grenades.  The teams going to need to do a lot of different things ranging from getting some "stuff"  He does air quotes to driving cross country as there is some travel involved, but nothing too far. The runners might need a van or something though.

Sid then looks at all the people eating pancakes and says point blank Look, do you want the job or not? Say yes and I'll tell you all I know.  We can talk money if you like, the sponsor is offering 8,000 Nuyen each for the job being done right.  Second you agree and we have a deal, I tell you the info.  If you're out, you eat your pancakes, get out of my hair, and I talk to the rest.  Make a choice.

Sid looks around at each of you expecting a choice.

"Finesse and speed costs extra" he says, matter-of-factly. "Cough up and the job'll get done right."

Pepperface's cybereyes twitched faintly when Alf describds his talents. It wasn't clear if this is slightly alien expression indicated suspicion or interest, but he slowly nodded once Alf finished speaking. "I heard some interesting things about Amazonian fighters employing spirits as basically bomb disposal drones during the conflcit with Atzlan," he offers.  "If it comes down to it, I'd certainly appreciate a second pair of eyes on any ordinance we deploy." Pepperface listened politely to everyone else introducing themselves and describing their talents, with the exception of "Vexboy," whose confession earned a poorly-suppressed roll of the eyes.

When Sid returned and offered his ultimatum, Pepperface frowned for a moment before shrugging in acceptance. "I can't say I'm pleased with the lack of information, but I also understand why you wouldn't want to give details on your little operation to people who haven't technically agreed to take part yet. So... alright. I'm in. Tentatively."  He glanced across the table at the other runners, wondering if anyone would step up to negotiate. Marcus had started the conversation, but Pepperface knew it wasn't his forte and was leaving it alone for now.

Kereina waits to see what the final price is going to be, but essentially is already in. The cash could go a long way towards some new mods, and besides, she has rent to pay. She sits back, enjoying her pancakes while the deal is hashed out, all the while thinking about this cross country trip Mr. Gambetti was describing. She's got the van parked outside already, but it won't go outrunning anything chasing them. And it'll be cramped for space with all the runners in one with her 'friends'.

I'm in, Mr. Gambetti. she'll admit when the negotiating has been done. No point in trying to get any up front, this short of a timeline isn't going to leave enough to get anything anyway.

Alf's first thought is 'Eight grand?  That sounds like it might be on the low side, and this guy seems like a good candidate to low ball the bid.'

He squares his shoulders, looks their Johnson in the eye, opens his mouth and starts "I..."

And then second thoughts hit him. 'I what?  I am well trained to obey my commanding officer and hate to question a mission briefing?  I ended up in a basement apartment next to the laundry room instead of on the second floor the last time I tried to negotiate things?  I don't know any of the details about the run but am willing to argue what the pay should be?  I am willing to walk away because I'm insulted that you low-balled us, and clever bastard that you are you didn't invite a face to this particular meeting?'

He slumps, and mumbles "... I am in."  He sighs, and looks around the table, hoping that his first impression will be wrong, and somebody here knows how to negotiate worth a darn.

'I really need to learn the Increase Charisma spell, and at least the basics of negotiation.  Now I understand why regular teams value a face -- if I'm going to keep free-lancing like this I guess I can't count on others to fill in my weak areas.'

As the other people at the table all jump on the initial offer, Skate shakes her head and frowns. Finally fed up with it she looks at the vaguely repulsive Sid and motions to the rest of the table, "You've determined you need this many people for the job and yet wont tell us the specifics of why." Pointing at Vexboy, she continues, "You've brought in a first timer and are apparently expecting the rest of us to nursemaid him through this mystery mission." Looking back to Sid, "All in all, this setup stinks, and you're only offering eight thousand for a job requiring travel with barely more than a day to accomplish it? No, I don't think so..." She grimaces at nothing in particular. "If nothing else, we should be getting most of *his* share!" pointing at Vexboy again.

"Im offended you think im that stupid." Vexboy said simply. He started to chuckle. "You... honestly think I'm not aware im the oddman out? Holy shit. I am a nothing in the shadows right now. Ok? I know I am. I should be doing personal errands for fixers ok? And yet here I am. You think I don't know how weird this is? All I can do is shoot... thats it. But I am good at it. Very good. Especially with pistols. But all else fails im the fodder. My job is to do two things... 1: Follow the instructions of the plan and 2: Don't die. If your gonna make me the grunt fine. But your the only one at the table who has made a complaint about me. The only one. Whatever the reason I was hired, I personally think I am more "disposable" then "asset", I was picked. Im ok with that. To my intermediate knowledge everyone else is too. I need to do the job." He had a serious look in his eyes. "When I do this job... my fixer will take me seriously. Then I never have to coast off more experienced runners. I can get errands for fixers and work my way up. But if this is the only way to get to that point. Then I will do whatever. Does anyone have a problem with our Johnson and I don't mean the nice man who bought us pancakes, I mean the guy who picked me, anyone got a problem with his decision to hire me then I will walk out. And when he hears it hopefully it won't have been important. On the off chance it was important then you have pissed off the Johnson. Wasn't it bad to do that? So uh... here... if 2 more people register a complaint I walk. Anyone?"

Marcus burst into laughter as the one who called himself Vexboy trailed off of his rant.

"Hah! The kid's got moxie, you gotta give him that" he exclaimed, looking around the table at the assembled crew before fixing the kid with a stare. "But let's not get our panties in a twist this early in the game; shoot straight and conserve ammo, omae, and you'll do fine."

Returning his gaze back at Mr. Johnson, he folded his arms across his chest. "Skate's got a point, though; pay could definitely be better. If nothing else, half up front buys my participation." He pulled the survival knife out of the sheath on his back and began alternating between spinning the hilt in his hands and flipping it idly from one hand to the other in a clear sign of boredom. "Call it a gesture of good faith."

Hearing Vexboy's passionate plea, Alf can't help but think 'Reminds me of me at his age -- I was so eager to be the next hero of the Wildcats.'

His response to the youth is a little more gruff, however.  "Always glad to work with a good gun -- but watch that chip on your shoulder, kid.  That sort of thing can get a chummer killed faster than 'bargain' ammo."

After he says that he can't help but think "Wow, it feels weird to be considered a veteran."

Vexboy had a look in his eyes like he had an idea and typed up something on his commlink. He handed it to Skate. "Well I do have a bit of cred. Even if I am an amatuer. I brought up my resume right there." The text file said: "Sorry chummer. I am on edge sort of. Nervous. That grimace made you seem mad at me. Sorry. Look. I only really need 6000 nuyen if I really think about it. If we can't get the Johnson to give up some more nuyen I'll give you 2000 out of my cut. Thats rent for most people and I got someone who will help me make some smart purchasing choices. I can handle 6000 but thats all I will go. Seem fair? We need to work as a team after all. Skate scrolls through the text on the screen, then looks over and Vexboy, and then back to the screen. Pausing for a moment to think about it, finally she hands the link back to him. Sid looks you all over and says Look kids.  I'm being nice here.  You don't seem like a bad batch, but I letting you cut your teeth on this one.  This is a favor from me.  My offer is firm.  You eat your soycakes and walk, or you sit here and listen to the rest of the deal and do a good job, capisce?

You grumble and moan, but stay for the money.  He graciously ignores your anger and starts into the job.
Ok, so the job is to poison a batch of plants on a farm out of town, it's gotta be done before the plants are sent out which will happen at 8pm tomorrow night, just before the Mattitudes next fight. You gotta kill the plants in a particular way though, you gotta poison them with a tank of chemicals that is sitting in a big building downtown in the CZ, here is the address. The tank is probably pretty big, like 6ft high and really heavy, you might need a trolley or a troll to pick it up. There could be people around it, I dunno much about that area of town, but it's not in the prime gang territory and there ain't a lot of construction around there, so it's probably a big rotten building. Anyway, that tank has a logo and serial number on it, and you will need to leave the tank on the farm where it will get found. I don't know what the logo is, but it's probably one of the megas. You get that tank to the farm and dump it in the water supply, and make sure it kills plants and you get paid. The farm has some grunts and drones protecting it, probably more stuff too, but all I've got to go on is what was in the info pack. It's not a top secret lab or anything, so I rekon this team will have all the skills needed to get in, dump the poison and get out, no fuss, no muss.  That's what I got for you.  In..out..a milk run.  What questions ya got?

"Anything you know about the plants themselves? If we fuck with the wrong plants I get the feeling the Johnson might not be happy. What exactly are we killing?" Vexboy asked before he casually took a bite of pancake... his eyes betrayed him as he took a bite. This was the best he had eaten in months. He started to dig in.

Marcus made a mental note to gut Sid like a fish when the opportunity presented itself. "This slimeball isn't even worth the oxygen he's breathing, and he wants to tell me what a favor he's doing me? Please. The man wouldn't last two days in the lab, being cut open, meddled with, and put back together again like some science experiment."

Pushing the unwelcome thoughts away, Marcus restrained himself before doing something he would come to regret. As the useless man prattled on about all the things he didn't know, Marcus noted down the few bits of actual worthwhile intel before asking for some badly needed clarifications.

"First of all, what kind of building are we retrieving the container from, and should we expect anyone there wanting to hold on to it? Second, you said the tank likely has a serial number and a logo, but that you don't know the logo; how about the serial number, or at the very least what the contents are specifically? Finally, how many of these containers should we expect to find in the building?" Marcus leaned in close and stared Sid right in the eyes. "You tell a fine tale about "finesse" and short time frames, but we're the ones hauling presumably toxic materials from within the slotting Zone, past CZ security, across open territory to some farm, all to kill a few plants. Well, let's just say that it's in all of our combined interests that we at least get the right container with the right chemicals."

Letting the Johnson's eyes go, he looked around the table and waited for the Johson to reply, and for the others to ask their questions.

With another glance at his new team members, he sighed softly. "We might need a winch. Anyone know a good mechanic?"

"I don't do earth spirits unfortunately, and I'm not good enough to make troll sized.... but I could probably summon at least good sized orc equivalent to help carry.  But getting a trolley might be easier, no?"

"As for transport, no big tank is going to fit in the Drekmobile--I can barely fit in my tools.  Anyone else have something big enough to hold something like that -- van or pickup or something?"

Raising her eyebrows at Sid's 'cut your teeth' comment, Skate has to remind herself that she'd be getting 10k for this if the kid follows through to keep from walking out immediately. The more Sid reveals how little he knows about this job, however, the less that money seems worth. "Milk run, my ass," she thinks. "There sure is a lot you don't know about this job... what *do* you know? Do you know what this chemical is? And more importantly, will it hurt me?" Not bothering with any other questions since it seems Sid doesn't know and doesn't care about any details and she doesn't want to further irritate herself, she resigns herself to having to figure it out as they go. When the discussion eventually gets around to transport she just snorts, "I have a bike."

Pepperface sighed heavily, pinching the bridge of his nose in response to the "negotiations." He seemed to practically flinch every time Vexboy spoke. "Newbs," he grumbled under his breath, before continuing, "I have a vehicle that can fit one other person, but I can't move a tank of the size you're describing. Can you suggest anyone credible that could rent us that kind of equipment, Sid?".

"Also," he adds, "I'm also very interested in that guy's questions," Pepperface concluded, pointing to Marcus, his hand moving with inhuman alacrity. "But otherwise fine, screw it. I'm in."

Plans rolling through her mind and pancakes quickly disappearing off her plate, Kereina vaguely listens to the questions posed by the others, musing over the idea of her Step-Van carrying this toxic mess of a container.

If what your describing will fit, I've got my Step-Van just around the block, we can use that to transport the container. she tells the group in general before continuing,  I too am curious of what exactly this stuff is though, any kind of poison to kill plants will probably frag us just as quickly. As for the modifications, I may be able to help with installing that winch, I'll see what I can find as well, having an extra is never a bad thing.

As the meeting continues, Kereina mentally composes a message to GreaseMonkey, her mechanic friend.
>>>Grease, you got any winches lying around? Could use two if you've got em. Let me know and I'll swing by your place on my way home.

Sid quietly listens to your comments and says, See you guys are problem solvers!  You already got a ride working together.  I knew I put a good team in charge.  Now to the question of the hour...I don't know what's in the tank.  I know it kills plants pretty well.  That's it.  It should be relatively non-toxic to metahumans, but I wouldn't go drinking the stuff.   When you get the tank, do a search.  You find out what the stuff is, you can decide then if you need the hazmat gear.  If you got a few cold feet left, go buy hazmat suits before the run.

Turning toward another questing face, The place it has to go is a is pretty much a mystery to me.  I don't like this country bumpkin crap at the best of times, so going further into the boonies isn't my idea of fun.  You can do a search when you get there.  You're new so first rule besides trust the Johnson is to do your homework.  Once you get close enough to work your cyber mojo or astral crap, figure out who owns the damn place.  I just contract to get it broke.

Facing the last questioner, Where it's coming from?  That I can tell you!  Its called the terminal.  From what I know, it used to be a shipping distribution center before things went down.  Like I said, no major gangs, it's not the crater, and its not even claimed by some crazy bug spirit shaman.  Milk run in the city!  You just got to get the big tank from that place to the other place and kill the plants.  I get paid for you doing your job, then you get paid for doing the job.  We all walk away happy.  Just be careful around the end.   The people who's plants your going to kill might not be happy about it.

As he look over the team again, he says Free advertisement for a friend of mine.  If you want to buy some gear for your rig, check out Goober.  He's a crazy dwarf who's a master with a wrench.  He can get your trucks fixed up and he'll have the gear you need to get that crap in your car.  Any other question?

Marcus accepted the ARO with this "Goober" person's information after Mr. Johnson finished answering questions.

"All right, not a lot to go on, but I'm good to go." He stood up and prepared to head for the exit, pausing only long enough to take one last look around the table to give the others time to ask their final questions before following.

With everyone gathered outside he leaned up against the side his off-road fast attack vehicle, a sleek 4-wheel drive model with plenty of suspension travel and an empty weapon mount for the single rear seat. "So, how do you want to do this? We've probably got enough muscle to pull this off as it is, but a winch would be good to have just in case. Should be a cool 1,500¥ or so, and we can get one installed on my ride or in the step-van, either way works for me as long as we split the cost." He sneered at some nearby gutterpunks who were eyeing his car, and cracked his knuckles before continuing.

"As far as this "terminal" place goes, it sounds like we should definitely get some eyes on the place before making our move. We could drop off either vehicle to get the winch installed, and then get some eyes on target while we wait. I can get in and out of the zone quietly enough, and I'll glass the target without any issues. Thoughts?"

"I think our Johnson's comment about a dolly is worth following up on.  I mean, I have no computer skills to speak of, and while you all finished talking I found examples from hardware stores, so no big delay.  Or a hand truck, I used to see them move some pretty items around base strapped to a heavy hand-truck.  Only issues is wheels might be noisier than carrying the thing -- although I could slap down a silence illusion that hopefully keeps most people from hearing anything.  And we'd still have to lift it onto the dolly, then into the van or truck or whatever."

Then pointing to a beat up sub-compact he adds "I'm happy to ride with someone for the job, but I want to move The Drekmobile somewhere a bit safe than this hood, first.  And speaking of casting silence, if I'm riding with someone I need a bit of space for gear -- got the serious medkit that is good sized, and some tools that I think we should bring along -- might need to detach the tank from something, or even help open things up on our way in."

Looking around at the other faces he adds "Silence, power drill to open a small hole in a door, mage sight googles to feed a cord through and turn until it can see the handle, magic fingers to open it from the inside.  Or just silence and a monofilament chainsaw -- if you don't mind more property damage it can work just as well and is sometimes quicker."

Pepperface typed the address Sid provided into his commlink, actually transmitting it to the cyberdeck in hidden in his right arm. "Thanks Sid," he says, getting up to leave. "I think we can take it from here."

"Everyone, this is my commcode," Pepperface says as he heads toward the door. With a gesture from his thin black AR gloves, he summoned an ARO of unique series of digits. "Send me yours, and I'll try my best to keep our communications secure. I'll follow after you, but first I'm going to see what I can dig up on our target."

Once he gets back to his car, Pepperface gets inside and inclines his seat, closing his eyes. First he feels the sun filtering through the windshield of his crummy car, heating the interior of the cabin to an uncomfortable and stuffy warmth. And then he feels the blazing hot rush of hotsim, that initial sizzle that sends your whole body limp as your fingers slice through the data trails. Pepperface was no longer the scrawny, aging shadowrunner, but his custom-designed persona; a slim humanoid figure in a matte black suit with its facial features blurred by a swarm of pixels. The overall affect was a blend between that ancient Matrix meme Slenderman and a Rene Magritte painting. Pepperface's persona tossed that address into the Matrix, chasing down any info he could find. As an after thought, he send a command to his vehicle to turn the air conditioning on. Hopefully he wouldn't be in too long, but it's never a good idea to cook your meat unnecessarily.
Once inside the car, Pepperface is going reconfigure his deck to be Data Processing 5, Firewall 4, Sleaze 4, Attack 2, and he'll use his Overclocker PQ to increase Dataprocessing by another point. He's running the programs Virtual Machine, Signal Scrub (if necessary)and Toolbox, bringing his Data Processing up to 7 to run a Matrix Search in hotsim for anything associated with address:
Matrix Search on Address: Computer 5 + Intuition 5 + Hot Sim 2 (http://orokos.com/roll/399955): 12d6t5 5 5 hits, no glitch, and under his limit.
Pepperface is also going to wrack his brain for any educated guesses as to what their mystery chemical might be:

Heading to the exit with the others, Skate pauses at the door to put the hood on her cloak back up. "You guys are overthinking this. It's a big barrel. We should be able to lift it into the van. We're already on a short timeline and don't need to be messing around with trying to find winches, or dollies, or whatever. Lets go check the place out, snag the chems, and get moving. I'm pretty sure Sid's right about the lack of gang presence in the area, but give me a second to look at the map. Koreina finishes off her breakfast, copies the offered address and comm codes, and pushes herself to be feet.  I think your right, we're too short on time to worry about getting more equipment. she taps in a few commands to her own comm, checking the area around their target, looking for a suitable place to park her van. Once she finds one, she transmits the location to the others with a message describing that she'll be at the location shortly.

Satisfied they have all the information they need, the orc rigger returns to her vehicle, recalls the airborne fly-spy and returns to get garage. The C-pop music is still blasting inside and the car she'd been working on sites next to the lifts, but she makes her way around them and out the back door. Concealed under an awning being the garage, she finds her other friends. Time to wake up everyone, she calls softly. An engine purrs to life in response under a large faded blue tarp. Koreina throws aside the covering and the mist lynx glides forward on its wheeled feet. A couple of walking micro drones wiggle free from an old cigar box on a nearby shelf, and the occular sensors of the roto drones swivel to meet her eye before their rotors hum to speed. Returning to the van, she backs out down the thin driveway to the awning and opens the cargo doors. One at a time the drones find their spaces inside, and the rigger slams the doors shut.

Marcus took off with Skate riding shotgun, following Alf to his destination where they transferred gear from the so-called "drekmobile" to the smuggling compartment of his own vehicle. He then maneuvered the Morgan to the location Kereina had indicated she'd be parked, and rolled to a stop in a secluded alley next to the riggers van. Getting in and out of vehicle required a bit of gymnastics as the tubular frame and armor plating precluded fancy modern amenities like doors, so he swung out of the seat and went to the back of the vehicle where he opened the smuggling compartment. Undressing quickly, he left the lined coat on the right rear wheel as he slipped out of his Rapid Transit and into the chameleon suit and stowed his Rapid Transit and Remington Suppressor into the backpack containing his other gear.

"Better bring the autopicker, sequencer, and miniwelder just in case" he thought to himself as he finished securing the forearm guards underneath the sleeves of the chameleon suit. "The ballistic mask, of course, don't want anyone recognizing me out of hand; one spare extended clip each of APDS and flechette and two of regular ammo, all complete with tracers." Hefting the crowbar, he considered his options before deciding to put it back into the compartment, slipping a flashlight into one of the concealed pockets next to his commlink instead. The gecko tape kneepads and gloves went on and the shock gloves got stashed in another pocket, and he then donned the three-point tactical sling attached to the AK-97 before shrugging back into the lined coat. He brought the assault rifle up to his shoulder and sighted down the top-mounted holographic sight, then thumbed the magazine release and deftly caught the standard size clip as it fell. He tossed the clip into the survival kit, then worked the smooth action of the old rifle before slamming home a large extended magazine capable of holding over 70 hand-loaded rounds and finally secured the weapon by flipping the manual safety to the on position. Satisfied that his prep was done, he slipped the ballistic mask onto the top of his head and turned to the riggers van.

"Kereina, comms-check" he subvocalized over the micro-transceiver. Switching to his trodes, he mentally sent off a quick message across the Matrix. "Mind sharing what your drones are seeing? I'd be particularly interested in the area surrounding the target facility. Don't want any surprised when we bring that canister out into the open."

Vexboy wanted to bring his Defiance and Ak-97 but he knew that he'd have to strap them to his back and would have been stopped by Lone Star. He got into a pair of jeans and strapped the armored vest underneath his white t shirt and changed out to more comfortable shoes. He kept his Bike Helmet on. (Think Baseball helmet but with a pair of goggles that as of now only keep the wind out of ones eyes.)  And packed his backpack. "Okay lets make surr I got everything. Medkit, flashlight, respirator, restraints, might as well bring my medkit supplies." Vexboy pocketed his commlink and knucks and strapped his switchblade to his belt. He put an additional switchblade in his left shoe. He strapped on his Colt Americas and his hold out and put on his light black jacket. Zipping it up he looked in a nearby mirror. Before hopping in Marcus' vehicle Skate makes sure to grab the cloth wrapped bundle from her bike's compartment and transfer it to the new ride. "Sounds like we're probably going to need this at some point..." Slapping on her bike helmet and putting her bag on the floorboards she bangs on the side of the car and points ahead, "Onwards!"

Not going to bother messing with going home for the rifle.

Marcus' comms check brought back memories of her security days, a different life altogether it would seem. Comms open, she sent back, feed will be up momentarily. she connected the data plug from her liegelord command console into the datajack behind he left ear and felt the familiar comfort of the drone sensors feeding and augmenting her own vision. She called up the direct sensor feeds from the two fly-spies and sent them to the commlinks of the other runners. At first, the feeds seemed just dark, but their sensors soon began to transmit the white walls of the van, then the open back doors, then the world shrank away as they took flight towards the compound in question. spies away, Kereina sent over the comms then began to work on the rest of the drones while the spy's feeds came through her RCC and into her image link. She swung the back doors wide as the other vehicle pulled along side the van. She deftly pulled the ramp out, and lowered out to the ground, allowing the lynx combat drone to roll out and sent it to hide in the shadows nearby, watching their perimeter. Next came the roto-drones, blades whirring to life and taking up their own defensive positions around the gathering group. >>>Feeds are up, check your links<<< all drones were now sending their sensor feeds to anyone in the group that wanted them.

Before leaving the restaurant parking lot, Alf takes a moment in the familiarly uncomfortable seats of The Drekmobile to pull up his link and look at where this 'Terminal' place is, relative to anywhere else that he's been or even heard about.  Then he tries to put that together with what little he knows of gang activity in the city, to see if that tells him anything about gangs in that area -- they'd been promised that there wasn't much activity, but that didn't mean it was so.
Chicago gangs knowledge skill (interest).  Rating is one, but with increased intuition up, he has 11 dice for this at the the moment  Chicago gangs knowledge (interest) (http://orokos.com/roll/400125): 11d6t5 2 just 2 successes.
After they figure drive back to familiar territory then shuffle vehicles and gear, Alf settles back to wait for the background count to kick in, as it inevitably will around here.  Once they get near The Terminal, he shifts to astral perception and tries to figure out just how bad the local astral plane is around here.  How hard will it be to keep a spell up?

He'll certainly do some astral scouting, but he wants to understand what he is facing first.

Sid thinks about Vexboy  question for a second, then says "who?"  Then Sid waves good by at you and goes back to watching boxing, soft-core porn, and the news as the waitstaff gets angry as you leave.

Outside you all get into your various vehicles, and head out.

Knowledge Chicago
The terminal is just an old shipping terminal.  When crap when to hell, it was abandoned and all the crap inside was left behind.  A small band of people have set up a ghetto there.  No major gangs, but several common people just trying to get by.  The small town does have its own "security" if people misbehave.
You drive out to Chicago, and head to the Terminal.  From your eyes in the sky, you see it's a  giant U-Shaped facility.  In the center you see a shanty town has sprung up with various cardboard box hovels and shipping pallet houses.

How do you want to proceed?

Alf slumps back in his seat, and does a quick astral jaunt to get a feel for the area -- background count, any signs of magical activity in the area.  Then he pulls back into his body to inform the others and make plans.

Vexboy uses his feed to triangulate Kereina's position. Upon meeting up with her he sets his Dodge Scoot next to her Van(far enough way to not be right up against her but its more of a logistics thing. There is respectable space.). He looks at the drones and says, "Wiz. I get simsense vertigo so I can't even imagine what its like to control things with your mind. I can barely enter the matrix without vomiting after I exit."

The Astral
The place has an aura of unhappiness.  It's not enough to hurt your, but enough to feel the urban decay of a soul.  As you jaunt around, you see physical forms of all sizes with some cyber mixed in.  It's a gathering place for the downtrodden.  Ahead, you see another astral being-short but proud with a Native American head dress.  It looks at you and says Hello.  Do you bring trouble?  Gliding up behind the dwarf is a crackling being of energy.
The Net
This place is pretty dead.  there is low power tech all over with comms on everybody, but nothing you would care to take unless you want to.  There are a few bright spots, but those have pretty indicators to show how dangerous that could be....  Things also hide from time to time in the digital shadows.
The physical.
You park the car and step out.  The denizens of the place stop and look.  They don't look friendly, but they don't look hostile.  You're new and that means trouble.  As you step forward with a purpose, so does a giant troll.  It has a shotgun across its back, but it looks like it won't need it as her fists are large enough to crush your head if she wants too.  She steps directly up to you, close enough you can feel her breath and says Hello.  Welcome to the Terminal.  You here to play nice?
Pepperface briefly considers getting back in his car and speeding off when he sees the female troll stomping up to him, but he controls himself. No, that would only make me look more suspicious. <<Drek. I've been made, going to ask the local color if they've seen out mystery chemical, and if they'd be cool with us taking it off their hands.>> He patched an image feed from his cybereyes in with his message; that way, his team could at least watch him get pummeled into the concrete, if not prevent it.

"I certainly am," Pepperface said neutrally, adjusting the lapel of his suit. "Trust me, I'm not looking for any trouble. I'm actually just scouting for industrial salvage on behalf of my employers. Have you seen any industrial machinery, chemical tanks, large amounts of scrap metal, or anything of that nature? I might be able to offer you some nuyen to take it off your hands." As he spoke, Pepperface could feel the odd vertigo sensation of the world around him slowing down as he turned on his wired reflexes and reaction enhancers (with wireless on as well), just in case.
I'm doing a Negotiation roll, which Pepperface has to default in, so I'm also spending Edge so as to not be terrible.
2 Charisma - 1 Defaulting + 5 Edge (http://orokos.com/roll/400803): 6d6t5 4
4 hits. If you decide that should be a Con roll instead, he should actually have a couple more dice. He's also turning on his 'ware, as described IC, with wireless on. Also, let me know it the troll has any obvious, wireless (hackable) devices on him.
Marcus' shoulders slumped when he started reading Pepperface's message, and when he finished he simply  sighed loudly. "Bloody amateur" he thought to himself as he replied.

"What's done is done; get eyes on our objective, and we'll send the cavalry. If the locals turn hostile, run."

Without hesitation he ran to his vehicle and jumped in, then quickly fired up the engine and let it idle at a low rumble. "Sounds like our medic decided to do some force recon by himself; let's get ready to pull him out of the fire in case the natives get restless. Kereina, let us know the second you've got eyes on our target, and stand by for a hot extraction."

With the preliminary Intel from the drones Marcus had a pretty good idea of how to get to Pepperface as quickly as possible, but the objective was of primary concern. "Fragger wants to get himself geeked by the neighborhood street toughs, that's on him." He gruowled under his breath as the decker talked to the Troll. "Don't you dare offer them payment" he sent over the Matrix, "we can handle a few wannabe gangers without cutting into our bottom line."

Upon recieving the message from Pepperface Skate sighs and shakes her head. "And here I thought Vexboy would be the first one to screw the pooch," she sighs to herself. Settling back into the car seat she watches as Marcus runs back over and hops behind the wheel. "This is off to a good start, isn't it?" Reaching down between her legs with one hand she grabs the silencer from her bag as she pulls the Predator from under her coat. Quickly screwing the metal tube onto the barrel of the gun, she then hides the hand holding the gun between the seats. "We just going to wait for him to get shot?"

Realizing things could go south very quickly, Kereina settles into the driver seat of the van and begins retasking her drones. One fly-spy will switch to overwatch mode, loitering over the large troll and keeping watch of the surroundings. The other begins a concentrated hunt to find the chemical tank. She also sends one roto-drone closer to Pepperface, but gives it the command to stay out of sight for now.

Pepperface smiled at the troll, palpable relief washing over him as he powered down his cyberware. As the world around him returned to normal speed, he answered, “Yeah, that sounds good. I think we can work something out, miss.” He’d been secretly hoping it would work out this way. After all, Sid seemed pretty convinced that retrieving the chemical tank would be the easy part of the job. And for their part, Pepperface couldn’t imagine that these squatters enjoyed sleeping next to a vat of hazardous chemicals. This was a win-win situation if there ever was one. Hearing Marcus' dissent, however, Pepperface sighed and sent out a quick Matrix message.

<<Are you serious? Are you a gibbering psychopath? If we can grease some palms instead of shooting a bunch of helpless squatters, I’d prefer we do that. Looks like they’re willing to work with us in exchange for very little, and shooting brings attention. Shooting risks getting shot back. No and thank you. Somebody bring the van around, and stop at a Stuffer Shack to pick up some blankets and tarps and drek. You can take it out of my cut.>>

“Children,” he muttered under his breath to no one in particular. Then, to the troll: “My people are coming with your goods, along with a van to transport the salvage. Mind showing me around? Anything in particular you’re looking to get rid of?” Pepperface happily follows the troll around her camp, feigning polite interest. As soon as he sees the chemical vat, he expresses interest in it and little else. Provided she’s willing to trade the chemicals, Pepperface is more than happy to give up 500 nuyen worth of basic supplies in exchange for it.

Alf is impressed by their vigilance ‘Geeze, picked me up when I was casing the place from a distance, but I guess you can’t be too careful around here and distance isn’t that big a deal in the astral – I should be more stealthy the next time I’m scoping a place out.’

As to the question that he has been asked, Alf does his best to communicate the concept of “I don’t want trouble, but may have some business for you.”

Peaceful overture or not, now that he’s been spotted anyway, he takes the time to scope out his questioner and its (presumed) spirit companion carefully.
edited May 11: max stat increase is four points, so intuition only buffed by that much.  Changes the successes with spell in place to 3, from 4.

Bio, this is an assensing roll, but how many dice depends on whether there is a back-ground count.  Alf had a force five Increase Intuition spell on himself, and he has five intuition.  In any degree of background count the spell will drop down to below the minimum force, and break.  So I’m rolling the asensing in two parts: base dice, then the extra five [/s four ]dice (so that you can add that on if the spell is still up).

Base: Asensing base roll (http://orokos.com/roll/401121): 8d6t5 2
+4 dice if spell is up: extra asensing dice from spell (http://orokos.com/roll/401388): 4d6t5 1
So either 2 or 4 3successes (or less if the background count also lowers asensing rolls – I don’t remember)
Alf had not gone far from the vehicles, as originally he was just trying to get a feel for the area without drawing attention.   And so he notices the Morgan bound forward toward the terminal buildings, and he doesn’t care if his questioner picks up on his astral scream of “My body!  What is that maniac doing!”  With that he dives his astral form back into the vehicle – despite the almost unlimited speed of astral travel, it still takes him a few seconds to match the rough ride of the vehicle well enough to snap himself back into his (already slightly bruised) body.

Once he does he yells at Marcus “What the frag is going on here?  I was just starting peaceful contact with their magician!  Are you TRYING to get fireballed?”

Don't  mind at all, just try not to make a mess in here Kereina intones over the speakers inside the van, her body going limp with her connection to the vehicle. As the others push deeper into the terminal, she carefully maneuvers closer to the entrance and the others, her drones remaining close, but as out of sight as possible.

Nice and eas... AH DREK! her peaceful thoughts interrupted as Marcus takes off into the building. She slams the accelerator, and calls up her lynx to take point. The quadraped wheels tear through the dirt and debris as the combat drone overtakes the van, weapons swiveling forward. One roto-drone hurries to follow the screaming Morgan, the other takes up position above the van. Come on, come on, come on, find it the speakers once again, her voice mumbling as the fly-spies both begin a concentrated search of the building.

When Skate had grabbed on to his vehicle and laughed out loud over the sound of the engine roaring to life and the tires kicking up dirt, Marcus discovered, much to his surprise, that he was smiling. "This is what it's all about. Imposing my will on the world, one dirty inch at a time. I'll never live by the rules again if it's the last thing I do; no one gets to put me in a cage." Memories of his time in the lab threatened to surface as they so often did, but he was committed now, his mind on a razors edge, his intent focused on a singular purpose. He barely manged the sudden and unexpected urge to howl as he flipped down the custom ballistic mask onto his face and whiteknuckled the steering wheel as the suspension of his Morgan kept up with the terrain.

Halfway to his destination Alf suddenly jerked in his seat, and yelled at him. Confused, Marcus realized he had overlooked the magician's limp form as he had jumped into his car and sped away. "What do you mean, magician!? They've got mojo of their own in there?" A shadow materialized into a rough shape of a metahuman coming out of an alley and Marcus swerved hard more out of concern for his car than the wellbeing of the creature, and he didn't look back to see what he'd almost hit as his target rapidly approached ahead. His keen eyes could make out Pepperface's car and the entrace the decker had been broadcasting his feeds from, and as he prepared to slam on the breaks he shouted back to Alf. "You just point out who the mage is; he gives us any trouble, geek the fragger!"

Having engaged the parking break at the last possible moment, the Morgan slid to a halt on fully locked wheels and Marcus was out of his seat before the car even comes to a complete stop. With his rifle already slung under his coat he smoothly brought it up to his shoulder and scanned for potential targets as he strode into the Terminal with a determination that oozed a "don't slot with me, fragger" attitude. "Do you have our target, or do I need to start cracking skulls?" he asked of the rigger. He surveyed his immediate surroundings for threats and any signs of his objective, with every fiber of his being thrumming as the adrenaline coursed through his veins.

The troll smiles and begins to walk you to the building.  She's talking, but you can tell she's no tour guide.  She's giving you enough information to let you know what your passing.  You've given her enough information for her to know what your looking for.

Things are going well...until all hell breaks loose.  A car slams its breaks and a man jumps out waving a gun.  You know he's on your team, but your troll friend doesn't.  She pulls her shotgun, and begins shouting MOVE PEOPLE!  to you she says If it's your dog, get a leash on it.  If it's not, then he's about to be put down!  Shes training her firearm on the intruder, but doesn't start shooting yet.....

"Well this is going about as well as expected," Skate thinks to herself. Ducking down as if to hide from the large gun being pointed in her general direction she sets her Predator down and unwraps the bundled Enfield in the floorboards. Once all the parts are clear of the canvas she quickly assembles it, faint whines and clicks floating up as the various pieces snap together and electronics engage. Shotgun prepped, she stays hidden from any stray bullets and keeps an eye on the drone feeds waiting for the situation to either resolve or demand action on her part.

When Marcus spotted Pepperface and the troll, he leveled his rifle at her and shouted loud enough for everyone nearby to hear. "Don't move, don't frakkin' move! I'm not here to hurt you, but if anyone tries to be a hero I will."

He kept walking and saw the troll suddenly try to go for her gun. With marksman's precision he fired off a 6-round burst into the air around both sides of her face, tracers passing by so close she could probably feel the heat of them passing by. With her troll's thermographic vision she definitely saw them, no doubt about that.

"Stand the fuck down! I'm here for a purpose and you're not it, but I will execute every last one of you if I have to." He waited for her to make her move with one finger resting on the trigger of his assault rifle, ready to unleash death and destruction on any vermin who dared oppose him.

With his rifle trained at the troll, he watched her drop her weapon and quickly subvocalized to the rest of the team. "Kereina, status on locating our target?"

Marcus snorted as the troll exclaimed that they didn't have anything worth stealing. "As if I'd want anything from these... people." He walked over to the troll and used his foot to slide the dropped weapon several meters behind him, then backed up a few paces. Without acknowledging Pepperface he calmly spoke as if nothing special had happened. "I'm looking for a canister that's approximately 6 feet long, has the logo of a megacorp on it, and is probably marked with toxic materials warning labels; seen anything like that around here?"

With a sudden thought he mentally composed and sent a message to everyone over the Matrix. "Kereina, can we prop the container up on that tracked combat drone of yours? Worst case, Vex and I can keep it stable while you and the others cover us and the vehicles." He kept scanning his surroundings for threats while he waited for a reply from Kereina and the troll.

Ya I know what and where you're looking for.  You get more flies with soy than piss ya know?  I'll take you or your little friends can find it.  She points up to the drones

The drones find the canister.  It's a big un, but working together, you can get the canister in the car.  The drones can get it if you wait...

As for the people, the troll watches cautiously as you take the canister.  It's pretty quite.  Nothing happens in the physical, astral, and only the local chatter of the drones to your rigger in the matrix.

After you get the canister loaded, the troll looks at you all disapprovingly.  We could have been friends, but you had to do this the hard way.  She snorts, and waits for you to leave.

Before you all are about to leave you all get a matrix message. If you have just accepted a run from Sid, I may have an opportunity for extra profit for you toconsider. If you are interested in additional profit, I would love to talk to you

Marcus didn't even acknowledge the troll as he helped load up the canister. Instead, he grabbed a few snapshots of it including some closeups, and sent them off to his contact, Dr. Martin Tate. "Any idea what this stuff might be? Specifically, what kind of toxicity are we talking about, for metahumans in general and plants or crops in particular."

When the message came in from the unknown commcode, Marcus looked around at the others. "Sid is a scumbag, and he's not paying me enough to not investigate competitive offers." With that, he replied to the message. "Interested. Time and place?"

With the canister secured in the back of Kerenia's van, Marcus got back into his Morgan and waited for the others to load up. Only when they'd passed several city blocks did he pull over to stow the ballistic mask, AR, and various illegal equipment into the smuggling compartment, then put the Rapid Transit over his chameleon suit before heading back out onto the road.

With the weight of the tank in the van, it seemed to be going even slower over the rough terrain of the shambles together village. It also made her a little uncomfortable having toxic waste of some kind sitting in the same compartment as her. The room was a bit cramped now, but the drones were all back inside as well. While Marcus was rampaging around looking for the container, Alf took a moment to transfer over 250Y from his good credstick to his cheap one, and when the opportunity presents itself he does his best to pass it to the troll without being obvious.  He murmurs "My name is Alf, I'll try to come back in the next couple of weeks and I can help with healing needs."
Palming, 7 dice  Palming (http://orokos.com/roll/402090): 7d6t5 3

And the follow up can be his 'working for the people after this mission is done, but that has no impact on this mission, and is over and above the 250Y.
Once they get the tank into some decent light, Alf helps brush off the old labels and takes a read of what they are dealing with.  Then he digs around in his memory of his biology courses and his training in the military on bio-hazards to see if he can figure out at all what this stuff might be or do.
Biology: 10 dice  Biology (http://orokos.com/roll/402092): 10d6t5 4

Sure, use up the good rolls on fluff -- expect a 1 success lightning ball bouncing all over the place at some point, people! (I do actually believe in RNG, I just like to pretent about dice superstition)
Pepperface sighs as Marcus roars up and threatens the squatters. "Sorry," he admits with a sigh, "He's with me." I've never really been an altruist, but this guy is fragging maniac. I would have much preferred to handle this amicably...

Pepperface didn't want to speak out against his team mate in the presence of the people they were robbing, but he made his displeasure known with his stony silence and long stares at Marcus. When they got out of earshot of the squatters, Pepperface turned around to look back at Marcus as he headed for his Commuter Plus. "Anybody ever tell you that you're a real fragging charmer, kid?"

While furious, Pepperface takes the time to erase any MARKs left on the psychopath's equipment, leaning back in his seat in hot sim briefly to do so. As he worked, his sent a quick message to the rest of the team regarding the mysterious "offer." <<If it doesn't conflict with our contract with Sid, I might be in. But we need to be careful. This could be an ambush set up by some other party interested in the canister. Or just interested in stopping us.>>

"Well, this is certainly getting the job done," Skate thinks to herself as Marcus bullies his way through the meager resistance and the team loads the canister onto the van. "Charmer or not, we've got the goods, we didn't have to kill anyone, and I'm not any poorer. All's well that ends well, right?" Returning to Marcus' vehicle, she takes the time to disassemble her shotgun again, rewraps it, and stows it in the smuggling compartment before hopping back into the passenger seat. <<Well, stopping us hasn't worked real well so far, might as well hear what the guy has to say.>>

Deciding to let Vexboy handle this for now (after Marcus' stunt, he's now only the second biggest liability on the team, in Pepperface's book at least), Pepperface continues to monitor the communications over the Matrix, before sending a message privately to the team: <<I'm willing to hear out offers. Marcus reviewed the incoming messages and composed one of his own to the team.

"We'll do the job; I know this guy and trust them more than that scumbag Gambetti. Also, one of my contacts tells me the chemicals we've got is a powerful herbicide, so let's keep that drek contained, neh?"

He shifted in his seat as the rough ground of the Barrens kept his vehicle bouncing, and mentally sent off another message to Dr. Tate. "Excellent. We're in; what's the job?"

Alf leaves with a sour feeling.  He'd like to come back and try and help these people, but he might not get a chance.  The work he'd done the previous week had ended up being very educational, on top of leaving him with a good feeling.  If he could keep his expenses under control and keep landing gigs like last run and this one, hopefully he could keep finding people he could help.  If his so-called teammates didn't manage to stain him by association.

To the team he comments "Well, we didn't make any friends back there -- I hope none of us ever end up needing friends in the part of the sprawl in the future.  If we could manage to complete the rest of this without pissing off people we don't need to piss off, that would be excellent.  I'm not against making additional money, so let's figure out who is making us an offer."
I don't think it was Dr. Tate who made us the offer -- Marcus sent Dr. Tate a picture of the markings on the tank, asking what it might be and what dangers it posed.  I think the offer was from some so-far-anonymous person.
You make your way over to Dr. Tates hospital set up near the fight pit.  Its an easy ride across town.  When you get there and message the good doctor, a nurse runs out and hands you a small refregerated package. The doctor says to sprinkle this where you need to.  Money after the job is done.  Good luck!  With that she runs back into the abandoned offices.

What's left now is to go out to the country and do your job.  Do you want to do any more shopping or do you want to just head out?

“If people need to gather gear, let’s allow some scatter and arrange a meeting time and place to get back together.  If we can scout the place well enough, perhaps we can do this job tonight, to hopefully lessen the chance of getting spotted?

I guess that raises one question:  is there anyone in the group who must have lights to walk through a field at night?  If so, any chance you can get some night vision gear in the next hour or two?  If we can’t arrange that, then I’d suggest going in as soon as the sky is getting lighter in the morning.  Usually it is a low activity period for humans, although it is peak time for some para-critters.  We could go in during the middle of the day and pretend like we belong – or just shoot anyone who gets in our way – but I don’t think this group is strong with confidence games and while we have good firepower I don’t like the messiness of getting involved with an unknown number of opponents with unknown capabilities.”

“Getting astral and matrix investigation done during this downtime sounds good, but let’s not have any lone wolves  wandering about the area and putting people on edge – or worse getting captured.”

"I've got no issues with darkness" he replies subvocally when Alf asks. "I'll wait around for recon to complete as long as everyone else does too. Alf notices the spirits and thinks to himself "Time to bug out -- wait, I really shouldn't use that particular phrase anywhere near Chicago.  But get out of here for sure."  Then he matches deed to thought and carefully extracts himself, trying to continue to avoid notice.

Once back in his body he communicates to the team >>>Looks like a lot of fields, with some big dome in the middle of it.  There were spirits on patrol -- three of them -- and I didn't want them to know just yet that anyone was interested in the site, so I didn't try to look inside the dome.  Hopefully someone who is better with the matrix than I am can get some satellite shots of the area?  The dome should be obvious enough, and maybe from those we can figure out something about the water supply.  I'm still not clear if we are talking a pond, creak, pipe, storage tank, or just what. <<<

SEND IN THE DRONES!
The area is pretty desolate.  Out an about you see tech driving around the area in some trucks.  They take some measurements, do "something" to a few plants, then drive to another area.   Sometimes they move large water lines to spray across an acre or two. Waiting for a bit, you see they cover an area of about a mile in diameter.   Walking around the main dome, you see groups of two humanoids walking around with guns.  Also around the perimeter of the building you see a large roboturret on a track.  Want to get closer? You have your drones follow the lines into the facility.
The lines follow into the facility covering almost a mile as they twist and turn.  It's not the most secure.  When they get closer to enter the facility.  In the facility, you see men and women of several races all working hard on various tasks.  Inside, there is almost no guards as you only occasionally see a pair  duck in and check the place.  The workers appear to be both farm hands or research technicians.  Roll a stealth check to see how well you sneak around or if you your drone is spotted.
Marcus watched the feed from the drone while leaning up against the frame of his Morgan, the assault rifle slung across his back. "A couple of guards, a few drones, and a bunch of civilians" he thought. "We could storm this place right now if that's all there is to it."

In his experience, however, things were rarely what they seemed. He turned to the other runners as he minimized the drone view. "Can we tap the lines and dump the chemicals into the feed directly? Or do we have to go to the source, wherever that is." He brought up a still shot of the guards and the drones, and with a thought made them into a public ARO. "If these are all there is in terms of security, we could also take the place by force if we wanted to. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more people inside, though, or in a bunk place somewhere nearby."

He then brought up a wide-angle shot of the dome. "Assuming we have to go inside, that's a lot of ground to cover." Pointing to the back of Kerenia's van where the container was stored, he went on. "We really need a better idea of where this stuff needs to go; anyone know any farmers?"

Don't. Know any farmers, but I'd say we need to get this thing inside and into the biggest water tank we can find. Kereina answers Marcus. She starts the drone inside on a search for water tanks inside, then moves to begin loading up her combat drones.Lets stick non-lethal for now. No need to go fragging everyone on a farm. She slaps home the clips of stick-n-shock rounds on the rotodrones, and loads the lynx with smoke grenades as their first rounds, but finishes the internal magazines with the HE explosives.

Alf nods at this, and adds "I still say we should go in well into the night, when there shouldn't be as many people in the fields.  And, you know, just drive up, no guns waving out the window or blasting in at 200 kmph or anything like that -- they might figure anyone driving up at night could be a danger, but hopefully they won't be so sure that they instantly scramble every guard and spirit they have.  And speaking of spirits, don't forget that I saw at least three of them on patrol.  I'm not that great of a spirit fighter; I'll do what I can with a spirit of my own, but those numbers mean we'll likely have to deal with at least one of them by mundane means, once fighting starts, and that means the heaviest firepower we've got probably.  I say 'probably,' because I didn't take a close enough look to figure out how strong they were, since I really didn't want to get spotted, but best to assume they'll bounce lighter munitions like they were a LAV."

After a moment he adds "Of course, depends a bit on where all of those workers sleep.  If they all go into the dome, we'd be faced with potentially high unintended casualties and large numbers of possible secondary combatants.  Anyone have gas grenades -- and a gas mask?"

With a glance toward the mage, Marcus chortled lightly. "You just want to drive up to the front door and say "hullo, we're here to poison the water supply"? How do you imagine that'd go down; doesn't exactly seem like any of us are particularly talkative, so if we're having to go in hot we might as well use the element of surprise." He frowned for a brief moment before continuing. "Especially if we're talking spirits; I'd rather shoot first and ask questions never when it comes to those fraggers. As far as civilians go, they'll keep their heads down if they know what's good for them. No skin off my back if a couple of them walk into the line of fire."

He pushed off the Morgan effortlessly, and swung his rifle into his hands. "While you lot look for a water supply, I'm going to do some force recon, get a closer look at the surroundings and security teams." He walked to the front seat and grabbed the keys from the car, a solid indication of just how old-school the vehicle really was, and shrugged out of his lined coat. With a single smooth motion he pulled the hood of his chameleon suit up and activated the ruthenium polymers on both the rifle and the suit, and watched as his limbs blended into his surroundings. Checking his surroundings, he made his way towards the facility behind what little cover there was.

It's pretty easy to walk within 100m of the farm.  It's open country, so you don't hide as well as you hoped.  But you can make it this far without being seen.  There are no fences as you miles of farm land to keep watch over, and no cattle to walk through them.  The only major structure for miles is the dome itself.  That's where the majority of the action is as well as your goal.  Around the outside of the dome is the turret track that rings the entire perimeter of the building.  The gun itself isn't exactly the scariest thing you've seen, but it can move with surprising speed covering the entire track in a few seconds.

You see the teams walking about as well as the occasional farmhand/tech doing some farmy/sciencey crap to the plants.  Odds are you don't care, but they don't seem to care about you either.  That or they don't see you.  Getting closer will be harder though...

Skate laughs and shakes her head, "I'm not sure bringing a whole bunch of attention to the facility right before we try to sneak in a giant vat of poison is the best idea..." With everyone going about their various recon tasks, she settles for checking both her guns then hops up to the gunner's spot in the Morgan to keep an eye on the surroundings. Bringing up the rifle, she watches Marcus' approach through the scope till he's too far to track his movement. With him out of the 'camp', she  responds to Alf, "Your idea's not all bad; could slap a big sign that says 'fertilizer' on the chems, see if the guards are paid to care or not. If not, well then, Marcus gets to do things his way anyway."

"I'm not sure if that is a good attitude or bad attitude for a 'Runner, but I tend to agree.  Plus I don't actually like shooting anyone or anything.  If we could manage this with a mix of getting close, and threatening bad things if anyone interferes, I'd be pretty happy.  By the way, I can't make us all invisible, but I can cast illusions.  Perhaps we could make use of that somehow?  I'm not the best at bluffing or conning people, but  if anyone has any bright ideas, I'll do my best with the spell.  Although again there are those spirits, who will see the illusion for what it is."

By deception .... you mean Con, I'm guessing?  I'll go on that (rather discouraging for Alf:  base pool of 1) assumption for now.

Marcus watched the patrols closely from his chosen position amongst the taller vegetation roughly 300 meters out from the dome. "Doesn't look like anyone's noticed me yet" he thought to himself as he opened up a comms channel to the team after ensuring his commlink was running silently.

"Looks like we've got standard patrols of two people, each carrying sidearms and wearing body armor, nothing heavy; looks like they're staying close to the structure, no more than 15 meters away. There's also a drone on rails around the building armed with an AK-97, looks like it can also travel inside the structure if necessary. Alf, any sign of those spirits you were talking about; I can't see 'em out here."

Settling in for a longer wait, he watched as the patrol made it's way out of sight around the edges of the structure. When they reappeared on the other side a good 45 minutes later, he sent a message to the decker. "Pepper, can you scope out the matrix security of this place? Sensors, locks, schematics, that kind of stuff. I can see guards entering the building through a door here, but alternate entries would be good, too."

He watched as the staff walked around doing their thing when a thought suddenly struck him. "Hey, I bet these civilians know where the water is coming from; I can grab one of them and make him talk. Or, we could just go loud and take hostages." Taking a closer look at the pipes running nearby, he fingered the miniwelder hidden in one of the concealed pockets of his suit. "I could also make a couple holes in one of these pipes, that should get some of the staffs attention."

As the sun began setting, he could feel the familiar itching between his shoulder blades. "This is taking too damn long" he thought as he watched a beetle moving in front of him. With a casual gesture he picked it up between two fingers and began pressing them together slowly, watching as the shell cracked and the bug stopped squirming. "Pathetic..."

Just before sun-set, Alf sprinkles a couple of units of reagents on the ground for his plant spirit to soak the essence from, then he sends it to walk across the fields in astral space, taking its time to enjoy the vegetation.  He sends it on a route that passes within a couple of hundred metres of the dome, but has it proceed without stopping or approaching the dome more closely.  Meanwhile Alf watches from astral space a good distance back and as concealed as he can be while still having line of sight, to see if this draws any reaction.

After sundown he prepares to summon an ancestral warrior spirit, but even as he prepares the summons he can tell it won’t work – he realizes he feels guilt about what they are preparing to do, and couldn’t ask an ancestral warrior to help with this.  Fortunately the spirit does not make him pay heavily for this affront, so afterwards he is still in good shape to summon Smoke-in-the-Face, a tricky air spirit that embodies the campfire smoke that blows in your eyes no matter where you move.  Smoke-in-the-Face would not mind playing such a trick on strangers.

Once he hears Marcus’s summary of the situation, Alf reviews the magical support that he could offer the infiltrators.

We ready for this? Kereina asks as the combat lynx drone makes its way out and around the van. The team waited until darkness was starting to settle, the average guard would have difficulty discerning much at this time of day. She climbs back into the van and starts the engine. As soon as the illusions start, she will launch the smoke grenades from the lynx to cover their movement and add to the illusion.

Aside from the patrols in the OC chat, you don't hear anything new about security.  It appears to be mostly the three patrols and the drone on a rail.

You begin to drive up under cover of darkness.   It's quite with only the sounds  being the night itself.  As you drive up, you have the bound spirit make entire truck invisible and your two stealthiest group make their way ahead of you toward two unassuming guards.   This are going great as you approach the first of the security patrols.  The two on the ground are about 20 years away....then the two earth elementals manifest in front of the truck....

roll sneaking for the two going up to the guards, and roll init for everybody!

Alf hated being cooped up in the van, where his astral sight saw little but machines and people who were part machine – it would have been nicer to ride on the Morgan, in the open where his astral vision could see farther.  But after what happened with the Morgan taking off with his body last time, he wasn’t taking any chances this time.

He took some comfort with the smudge of smoke with which Smoke-in-your-Eyes had surrounded the van; Alf knew how hard it was for the mundane eye to notice anything behind such a veil.  But he was still worried about the spirits he’d seen on his first patrol:  he hadn’t seen any sign of them since, but that didn’t mean that they or their ilk were not still around.

And then his fears were confirmed as two bulky earth elementals appeared in front of the van.

With the plan to try for a semi-covert entry decided upon, Skate figures this is her chance to get paid while not actually having to do a lot of work. "Seems like most of the physical security is concentrated on the outside. I'll follow the van in but stop a couple hundred yards out and cover you guys in case things go poorly. Either way, once you're in, I'm confident I can make it in behind you solo if needed, or I can keep up a watch out here. Should just be an easy pump and dump on the inside, right? A milk run!"

Once they're ready to roll, she engages the chameleon coating on her weapons and sets her clothes in an attempt to match the color of the vegetation before stepping on to the back bumper of the truck as it gets into motion. Cloak flapping behind her, she waits untill they're about 200 yards from the building before tucking her cloak around herself, dropping off the back of the van, and rolling into the greenery on the side of the road. Crawling another twenty yards to the side she kneels and slowly raises her rifle up to watch the progress of the vehicle towards the first set of guards. "In position, everything seems fine so far."

No sooner had she said that then two rocky forms suddenly appeared in front of the van. "Oops. Are those going to let you guys drive through them?"

I don't suppose anyone can ask these guys to kindly move out of the way? Kereina slows the van as she approaches the earth elementals. The combat drones are on high alert from their positions back along the road and flying above. She can feel the feed from the drones, almost like a pull from the drones' dog brain, starting against a leash. As they slow, she stops the van alongside one of the elementals, and rolls down her window and tells the spirits they have a delivery, and to let them pass, hoping the message will get back to their master.

Asking the elementals, they stand around waiting for a bit.  They don't move and neither do you.  It's a tense stand off, but eventually you see a pair a people( one human and one elf) walk up to the van.  The elf hangs back a bit with his weapon drawn, but the human approaches out of the glare of the head lights.  He walks up and says, I don't see you on the list.  What do you have?  Speak quick because this isn't 'sposed to happen!  He got a friendly enough tone, but he's also got a hand on his holster ready for things to get ugly....

Alf had been thinking about possibly plausible excuses as they drove up, so when he sees the men he urgently whispers to Kereina "Tell them we have a tank of nitrogen binding bacteria from Mitsuhama, figure out a story of why we're delivering at night, maybe The Desolation Angels brokered a deal or something?"

Then he casts an illusion over the tank in the back of the van, making it look all new and pristine, featuring a prominent Mitsuhama logo over "not for sale, Corporate use only" in easy to read letters.  He adds "Just make the window's clear, don't open anything."  Hopefully the spirits won't bull their way into the van to notice the spell.

The man standing next to the car looks at the driver, squints a bit, and says Say something fishy is happening here...maybe we better radio this in...

All hell breaks loose as the back of the van opens up and gun shots just start rinning out in the dark.

The elementals are unaware of what was about to happen...

The gunmen hammer the one elemental to the point it falls apart into rubble.  The second one is still standing tall...

The elemental rushes up to the car as fast as it can sinking into the earth as it moves.

The mage sends out a ball of lightning on the two, its off center, but hits the dirt where the elemental might be  Lightning crackles along its surface, but doesn't appear to do damage.  Another spirit appears and beings to move toward the  earth looking for a fight.

The drive slams the car into reverse.  He clips the worker, not badly, but enough to knock him flat on his ass.  The guards open up on the van, but the van easily takes the punishment.  The paint job won't be cherry the window might splinter, but there isn't bullets in your head.  Drones spin up as fast as they can from the roof of the van.  They see targets....

Through pass one!  Post pass two!

As fast as he could, Alf  created an illusion of an attack helicopter,  up high and off to one side a bit.  His time in the military pays off here as he can make a reasonable stab at the appearance and sound.  He has it slide a bit to one side and turn a bit, like it is searching out new targets, and every few seconds has it spit out a burst of bright muzzle flash from its mini-gun.   He mutters on the team channel "Let's move quickly, before they figure out that our 'air cover' is an illusion."

Once he has the illusion firmly in place, so that he can sustain it with only moderate difficulty he looks around out the window, and seeing that the choking guard has already fallen unconscious, he thanks Smoke-in-your-Eyes and let's him depart.   Then he opens his astral eye and looks around to see if it picks up on anything that his regular vision did not.

As the van jolts back toward the dome he things to add "We need to remember to plant that fake evidence, if we can."

Marcus picked up the clip of APDS rounds he had ejected in the middle of the firefight, all the while scanning his surroundings for more opponents.

"Copy that; get the canister out of the van, I'll provide cover."

Shouldering the assault rifle, the samurai stalked across the fields of vegetation, stopping only to make sure the guards were dead before hoofing it to the entrance where the rest of the crew were busy unloading their cargo.

Walking up to Alf, he padded one of several concealed pockets on his chameleon suit. "I've got the sample, now let's find out where we need to drop this stuff. Take point, I'll bring up the rear."

Carefully tracking the elementals as her partners in the van talk to the security guards, Skate is not at all surprised to see bullets come flying in from the side as Marcus opens fire on one of them. Sighing, she takes careful aim at the other elemental and sends an APDS round through what appears to be its back, causing a spray of brown material to plume in front of it. Whatever she hit must have been fairly critical as the earth spirit unravels into nothingness. Scanning the rest of the scene through the scope, it looks to be clear until her heart jumps into her throat when she hears the distinctive sound of a heavy chopper way too close. After Alf's explanation she responds, "Frag it! Heads up *before* creating the illusion next time, eh?" Once Kereina mentions going in, she asks, "You guys want me to cover your butts out here or hustle up and come it? Should just be an in and out, no?"
Title: Re: [IC]6-02 Amber Waves of Grain

The helicopter springs to life.  It's moving, and if you are just dodging for cover it will convince you that the military is out for blood.  Assensing you see that the threat is gone for now.  But, more earth elementals could easily be on their way if you are not quick.

You check both guards, and find them dead.  They're still warm, but they are not going to be for long.

Heading to the dome itself, you see that it opens up to a several levels with tubes and pipes running everywhere.  There are control consoles scattered everywhere.  You see lots of hook ups that could fit your cargo, but your not sure.

You also see several places where you could easily plant your evidence.  Some near the tank, some out of the way, and some absolutely absurd.  Do you just want to grab a pipe and hope? (roll edge + intuition) or do you want to think this through (roll me some knowledge check).
Title: Re: [IC]6-02 Amber Waves of Grain
Post by: Beta on <07-18-16/1601:52>
Alf glances at the mess of piping, tubes, supports, and controls and can't help trying to make sense of what goes where, but is hampered by staying at the entrance way where he can maintain line of site on his illusion.  Over the team channel he says "I don't much like the idea of hoping for the best, it doesn't usually work out well in my experience, but if any of you are thinking you might get inspired I can improve your chances by boosting your intuition.  Given time I might figure out a spot, I know a tiny bit about machinery, but call that a last resort option."

Figuring that his focus is going to be needed elsewhere soon, he starts bringing his illusion down to ground, ninety degrees away from the road they came in on.  Hopefully someone might think that is their escape plan and could send forces to cut off retreat in that direction, leaving their path clearer.  Once he gets it low enough he has the helicopter turn out its lights and stop shooting, then after a few more seconds in the dark he lets the illusion go.

Alf had ‘landed’ the helicopter while others puzzled out the piping.  By the time the good word comes out that a spot has been selected the short magician had already scrambled through the back of the van to pull out his toolbox.  “I’ve got carpenter’s tools, not an industrial set, but still I’ve got screwdrivers, cutting tools, a hammer … and maybe more importantly a glue sprayer.  Even if we can’t make it pretty we can probably wrap the joint with plastic and glue it all in place, should make it hard to take apart too.  I've got some plastic restraints we could strap down to hold things together, too.”

Marcus watched as the others hooked up the tank to the facility tubes, and when they were finished he pulled out the contained he'd received from Dr. Tate. With gloves on he carefully extracted the contents and placed them near the makeshift connection, then nodded at the others.

"We good here? Time to make ourselves scarse if it is."

Tapping the microtransceiver on his neck, he reached out to Skate. "Coming your way. Cover the others as they leave, and we'll hightail it after them." He effortlessly dropped into a dead run, long legs covering ground at a breakneck pace, assault rifle gripped tightly with both hands.

Arriving at the ATV, Marcus was pleased to note that he had barely broken a sweat despite running flat out for the better part of half a mile. The biomonitor informed him that his vitals were normal, and that his heart rate was only slightly elevated.

Barely even slowing down, he jumped into the drivers seat of the vehicle and immediately fired it up, engine roaring loudly to life.

"Hang on!" he yelled to Skate as he pulled a 180 and floored the accelerator, the deeply threaded tires kicking up dust and rocks as the vehicle gained momentum.

Marcus aimed straight for the riggers van in order to catch up, bouncing across uneven terrain as he took the shortest, most direct path. The off road suspension easily handled the conditions, and within minutes they were alongside the van.

"Let's get paid, folks" he sent across the comms as he paced the van back towards Chicago.

You all pile into the van and drive off.  You make it back to the starting Wafflehouse.  Sitting at his table switching between sports, soft core porn, and the news, is the greasy man waiting for results.  He looks up at you and says How'd it go?

Job's done boss, Kereina says flatly as she slides into the booth across from the Johnson.  Whatever they were growing before, it's not gonna make it now. She then sits back and let's the others find their seats.

The greasy man looks at the rest and says, Anyone got anything else to say?  He then waits for the rest of you to speak...

"Look, we did it, the plants are dead or dying -- any chance you can tell us more about who runs that place or why it had to be hit?  I guess I'm hoping there was a good reason of some sort for blasting into that place, doing that to those people.  Maybe I just shut up and take my money, but ... if you've got any info that will help me sleep better tonight, I'll take it."

The man looks at you and says Just take the money.  Don't worry about it.  I don't worry about it.  I get a job, then you get a job, and we all get paid.  Let's just leave it at that.  And with that he slides you a cred stick across the table.

A few weeks later you see that UCAS Famers stock takes a massive hit due to a failure of a new crop.  In an unrelated story, Aries is conducting a multi-nation manhunt for a Simon Andrews.

The End.
