Title: Another Rainy Night now out--what's lurking on the streets of Denver?
Post by: JM_Hardy on <02-25-12/1825:27>
Our latest enhanced fiction product, Another Rainy Night (Battleshop (http://www.battlecorps.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=28_187_241&products_id=2949), DriveThruRPG (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=99839)), is now out, with an original story by Patrick Goodman and rules and stats to support the material. Here's the dirt:

BLOOD RUNS RED

Every day in the Sixth World people die in a thousand different ways. Every day blood is spilled. Every place that rain falls, it washes away some of the red that stains the streets.

Eliminating every killer in the Sixth World is as impossible as drying up every raindrop in a storm, but Thomas McAllister doesn’t want to get rid of all of them. Just one. He’s been on this killer’s trail for a while, and he knows he’s getting closer. The only question is if he’ll be able to handle getting as close as he’s about to be, or if his blood will join the stream that regularly flows into the gutters of the sprawls.

Another Rainy Night is part of Shadowrun’s enhanced fiction line. It contains an original short story, along with game information to use elements of the story in your game, including stats for the major characters and new gear introduced in the story. Gamemasters and players can do more than become immersed in the fiction—they can make it a part of their gaming world.

Another Rainy Night is for use with Shadowrun, Twentieth Anniversary Edition.

Great work. Short but I really enjoyed reading. I won't use the hooks in my game, but anyways, good work.

AJ: Glad you enjoyed it. As of a few minutes ago, it was #6 on DriveThru's Top 100, though it hasn't achieved metal status yet. ARN's sort of the test case for the enhanced fiction line, so it's gratifying to me to see it placing well in the charts at the moment. Its sales will likely determine the probability of other works in the line...and I really want other works in the line, because there's more story to tell with Thomas.

Zuni: Fair enough. :) Thanks for letting me know you liked it.

That is great to see...I bought my copy direct from CGL...unfortunately, I won't to contributing to metal status (what are the tiers exactly?) on DTRPG.  Actually, it's very nice to see a number of SR product well placed...  ;D

Bought it on DTRPG - specifically because I want it to hit metal. Loved it, looking forward to more from the line and from you sir.

I am my own worst enemy. I've become the guy who posts reviews to his own work. It's a very nice 4-star review (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_reviews_info.php?&reviews_id=68583&products_id=99839) of ARN on DriveThru. He wasn't as enamored of the art as I am, but everyone has different tastes there, I suppose. I thought the art rocked, myself.

AJ: I have no idea what numbers go into the tiers at DriveThru. They're set up like coinage in AD&D, though, at Copper, Silver, Electrum, Gold, and Platinum. ARN hit Copper sometime during the night, which makes me feel better. By way of comparison, Way of the Adept is firmly Gold and is probably approaching Platinum; it's easily the best-selling PDF-only title the line's seen, period. The other example of enhanced fiction, 99 Bottles, is Silver. That's sorta going to be my benchmark; I'll be very curious about the numbers ARN sells in its first month compared to the same period for 99 Bottles. And those numbers will obviously include the CGL direct numbers, so I don't actually care where you bought it. I'm just happy you did. :)

Viking: Glad you enjoyed it. The piece I'm working on now is more or less unrelated to ARN, except that there might be some character's from ARN mentioned. No actual crossover...this time...though all my stories are related to each other, so it could happen at any time. After that's done, I should have a better idea of where to go next with Thomas and Lydia.

Bought my copy today (along with a couple Missions 03 & 04 pdfs).

[begin gushing]
I really like the fiction / game info aspect of the Enhanced Fiction line. Great idea that has massive possibilities. I like the story as well, kept me reading, great build up, and really enjoyed the diner chili+coffee scene as well as the always keep a round chambered moment.  I like the original artwork of the characters in their non-heroic near-unsettling realism; it's a cognitive dissonant event that rubs raw my bias of what they "should" look like.

And dates! Oh man, dating the story is like wrapping me in a fuzzy bacon blanket and letting a dzoo-noo-qua nibble on my cerebral cortex with candle light and a good wine in a house full of loving doting fully paid escorts! It gives me, as a GM, a definitive time and place to insert the event into my campaign allowing me to add to the depth of background or bring to the forefront of my game as I see fit. Oooh, squish love for that!
[end gushing]

[begin comments]
The one thing that disappointed me was no Plot Hook section on how to add or connect the story to an adventure or a Background section that gave a few more GM hints as to how one should think about introducing the "We" into a campaign. Don't get me wrong...the story is strong enough that bits and pieces can be extrapolated from it easily but having some kind of quick outline that at least hints at which way things may play out in further products would have been nice.
[end comments]
Title: Re: Another Rainy Night now out--what's lurking on the streets of Denver?
Post by: Patrick Goodman on <03-01-12/0908:59>
The plot hook thing has been mentioned. I didn't really think, as I was writing it, that it was necessary, but with some of the comments I've gotten, I'm beginning to think I was mistaken. I've resolved to work some of those up for other enhanced fiction pieces I do.

The piece I'm working on now (tentatively titled "Father to Son," though that's likely to change) is related to ARN only in that some of the characters from each story know each other, but it will have plot hooks by popular demand. :) It's also probably going to be a little longer than ARN, which was kind of a test of the waters for me (and, really, for CGL too, I think). The follow-up for ARN will follow FTS; still working on some plot points for that one, though.

I can't make promises, but most of my stories are going to have dates on them. It helps me as a writer keep track of things.

The one place I would have disappointed you if I had done a Plot Hooks section would have been backgroun on "We." I know it would help GMs, but I think it would damage some of the mystery. As a writer, I really don't want you to know much more about "We" than Thomas does...which is just about squat. Their goals were pretty clearly spelled out by Teresa, and it's clearly bigger than just one person. Mr. Big (not his real name) has a plan and the wherewithal to do something about it. Beyond that, at this point, you could tie a lot of things to "We" and probably not be wrong. :)

I'm pleased you liked the story. I am, in fact, quite chuffed about the response it's been getting in general. Thank you very much for the kind words.

To me, it sounds like a HMHVV I version of the Ghoul Liberation League mentioned in Feral Cities. Wonder if it is Vampires only, as the GLL is ghouls only, or whether they include all Infected. Not that many HMHVV II could be organized to actually do anything.
Title: Re: Another Rainy Night now out--what's lurking on the streets of Denver?
Post by: CanRay on <03-01-12/1449:49>
Or it could be an extremist minority group.  With the power of Vampires.  We don't know at this point.

But it certainly changes the spin that the "Ghouls are people too" folks were trying to give.  Were they trying to lull people into a false sense of security, or is this a violent reaction to that organization?

I mean, hell, there's Infected out there that just want to be left alone, and are decent enough folk aside from eating requirements.  And some that are just absolute monsters.

You know, people!  Just like everyone else.

I totally agree that the mystery of it should be teased out and not have things explicitly written out in a Plot Hook/Background section. One possible example of including a GM Plot Hook/Background piece would be to just to outline what other groups or organizations know as much as Thomas does, who knows less (but are important players, like KE), and who think they know more, whether Teresa was a lone test for the plans of We or if there are rumors of other "agents" working in other parts of the world in tandem with Teresa, how to fit possible other We agents into the pre-master plan of the group so that GMs can keep consistent with what ever the mystery is (like if they always target heavily cybered or if that was just Teresa's MO but not "why" they do if they all do), etc. All of that can allow the writer to give out additional hooks without revealing any of the mystery behind We. Of course even a "further information and background will be explored in an upcoming Enhanced Fiction piece," works as well but always risks the a change in focus for the product line. I am still waiting for Buckaroo Banzai: Against the World Crime League after all. :) Anyway, that's my quick brainstorm on how to approach the Enhanced Fiction game information section is it's picked up upon.

A final note, just to be clear (and long winded), the whole "disappointed" aspect is just from not having more content and not in the content provided...I liked that quite a bit. :)

Post by: Patrick Goodman on <03-01-12/1749:07>
There is at least one copycat still out there (mentioned in at least one JackPoint intro page recently). :) And you'll notice, there was nothing from KE regarding apprehension/neutralization.

Are the copycats connected? That's for you to decide. (And the official answer from the author is, "Maybe.")

Bought it and LOVED it! The fiction was excellent, and I have to agree with Fizzygoo about the artwork. While the art isn't what I normally equate with Shadowrun, it was edgy and new and different and I liked that. The only two things that I wish were different: 1.) I would have liked a small adventure that either coincided with what Thomas was doing IN the fiction, or dealt with a similar situation. 2.) The afore mentioned plot hooks section.

Please note that none of this is (or meant as) negative criticism. Great job overall!

I have a request. If you've purchased Another Rainy Night, whether it be from BattleShop (http://www.battlecorps.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=28_187_241&products_id=2949), DriveThru (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=99839), or RPGNow (http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=99839), please do me a favor. Go back to the site you bought it from and give it a rating. You don't have to write a full-on review of the thing (though if you want to, you're welcome to do so). But give it a rating. Those numbers help other people find the product, or give them an idea of what to think of the product, and help them figure out whether or not they should buy the thing.

Thanks again for your support.

Bought, rated, read, enjoyed, and have given it a place in my campaign's future events (we're currently mid-'72 with the next non-canon major event coming up in October with a series of BTL/psychotropic/spirit induced mass riots and a few demolished buildings in Downtown). Having a major mobilizing of Infected fits in perfectly with the 'Race to the Fall of 2074' that is my storyline.  8)

For the benefit of those who don't make it over to Dumpshock...someone asked about the Halloween Killigs. Here's the answer I gave over there.

Quote from: Patrick Goodman (on Dumpshock) date=Mar 2 2012, 01:36 PM
The lack of a "Plot Hooks" section has been noted, and will be addressed in future products (at least ones for which I am responsible).

The Halloween attacks (all of them took place after midnight local time on 31 October 2073) took place in the following cities (for those who don't know all the North American capitals or are just too lazy to look them up): Atlanta, Bellingham, Cara'Sir (Portland), Cheyenne, Denver, Edmonton, Havana, Honolulu, Quebec City, Sacramento, Santa Fe, Saskatoon, Seattle, Tenochtitlan, and Washington FDC. They failed in Denver, Honolulu, Sacrament0, and Tenochtitlan. The would-be killer in Tenochtitlan was killed; the other three failed assassins escaped.

Yes, that means that there was someone else in Denver while Teresa was hanging out there.

That said, it's currently at #22 in Science Fiction & Fantasy Short Reads, and #79 in Literature & Fiction Short Reads (both in the "45 Minutes" subcategory).

Thanks, guys. I couldn't have done it without you.

Man, now you REALLY got me curious. Note to self, spend two pdf rewards on these.

So 1 month from now we can use SASS-y gear? ^_^

SASS just became a must-buy for SRM players (not that it wasn't already)  :)

Wait... there's gear in Another Rainy Night? Where? My kindle version doesn't have any gear listings?

[EDIT]
Just flipped to the end of Sail Away, Sweet Sister, and I don't see any gear there either. Am I missing something, having bought the books on Amazon?

The crunch for SASS can be found on the blog post (http://www.shadowruntabletop.com/2014/04/get-your-shadowrun-fiction-fix-with-sail-away-sweet-sister/) announcing SASS. The crunch for ARN only appeared in the PDF release; I'll see about getting it broken free as a standalone PDF and posted. I kinda thought it had been done already, but I'm mistaken.

Maybe?  I got it through DriveThru and the gear is part of the same pdf.  The crunch begins on page 27, Personalized Grips are on page 31.

And the spell should really be "One Fewer"   ;)

EDIT: Looks like Patrick beat me to it.

Awesome, Patrick, thank you. I'd hate to miss out on more stuff :-)

I'm not seeing a price for personalized grip in the blog post release pdf, though. Omission?

Kind of. I honestly thought it would be in Run & Gun, so I just wanted to get the effect in for the purpose of the stats for the story, and let the big book take care of costs. I'll get back to you on the cost, but I can't imagine it would be any different from what you'd find for the same mod in Arsenal.

I just don't happen to have my books with me to look it up. Forgot the dang thumb drive with my PDF library on it.

A big detail here is that R&G changed weapon modification rules compared to SR4. So what kind of slot, if any, would a Personalized Grip use?

I'm assuming it follows the same rules as the Gecko grip in R&G.

That would be my guess, too. Once I get my books handy, I'll look things over.

This only happens if you bought the 'Enhanced Fiction' version

Yep; I got the kindle edition which didn't have the stat block. But, it's been made available online, at least.
