Can the thermal damping enhancement be turned off, allowing the armor to not detect as having the illegal enhancement without using more advanced scanners? The same goes for several of the other modifications, like the chameleon coating or non-conductivity.

On a related question, I noticed that milspec allows for a quick removal modification. Is there any kind of system for quickly donning clothing/armor?

Thermal dampening is a way of dampening a heat signature by using materials, you can't just turn it off. It's also not illegal, if memory serves. No more illegal than a diving suit, anyways.

Also, I really doubt they'd ask why you don't have a noticable heat signature or run electrical currents through you to test your conductivity.

And the quick release is only for the military armor. The quick release for clothing is 'Strength check to rip my shirt off."

Pretty much.

Wear cool stuff. Armor Jacket is great protection, readily available, and completely legal.

In this respect, I feel SR got it wrong. IRL (cringe) most civilians can carry legally, however, wearing or owning body armor is *highly* illegal.

Frankly, I think that it's a little stupid for the law to tell you it's okay to carry enough firepower to kill someone, but how dare you wear something to prevent yourself from being killed.

 ???

Where did you get that idea?

Is some places it is illegal for a felon to own body armor. Are you a felon?

I meant quick donning armor, not quick removal; though quick removing non-milspec would be a nice idea, like those tear-away suits.

The Thermal Damping have availability 10F, which as far as I can tell means there's no fake license will that assuage suspicions. I personally don't care about comparing Shadowrun laws with RL laws on armor and weapons, because this is 60 years in the future and all manner of things have happened.

Yeah the thermal damping option is illegal so if you got it then if the cops (or whoever) find it then they will ask some pointed questions. The thing is though that they need to do something like scan you with thermographic vision to detect it. It isn't likely they will be doing so during the day or in a well lit area at night. Besides they may be more distracted by your B&E antics or the heavy firepower you are carrying  :P .

California, or New York? I need to check state laws sometime again, like... ever. I think hard body armour is illegal, like intercepter vests, but soft body armour of type II or IIIA or lower I think is legal in most areas, which is what most the available armour would be. (Scaled by time and ballistic technologies of course.)

A lot of it can be up to the GM on whether or not LoneStar or whoever wants to enforce the law too on R and F gear.

I've always ran the LoneStar as taking a more common sense approach. A Chameleon suit would always attract suspicion, but some basic armor or thermal dampending I wouldn't care about unless they got caught doing something a little suspicious.

Hmmm... its illegal to own most firearms in Australia and body armour is illegal in all states and territories except Tasmania.

I honestly think going to America would freak the heck out of me!  I here people drive trucks around with gun racks and wear side arms and crazy sh$t like that.

It isn't unheard of, but it isn't common for most places (some areas of the Mid West, like Texas it may be more common).

Once I get my carry permit, I may occasionally carry my handgun, but it won't be a common occurance. But for the most part, you could visit most cities for a few weeks or even months and not see that.

Many people in Texas carry handguns, but it is always concealed (and you need a permit for it). I carry concealed. You will never see a Texan carrying on his/her hip because it is illegal to open carry here. You can open carry in Oklahona, but I've never seen it. A gun rack on a truck usually isn't seen in cities, but in the country certainly.

Back on topic, which armours or armour modifications are obvious, and which ones need to be concealed? Gel packs probably stick out if you do a pat down, and aren't in immediately recognizable armour. A chemical sealed bodysuit is probably only obvious if you're wearing the helmet that goes with it, and I would guess that a ruthenium coating is only obvious if you try and cloak right in front of people, they have AR enhanced color changing clothing an animated outfit probably isn't too far out of the ordinary. If you look at the art on 326 of SR4A you could assume that tough plated armour look isn't that outlandish on the streets.

Attitude also says armor is a regular thing amongst society. Most corporate suits are armored.

Its kinda crazy that Thermal Dampening is illegal. In that case, you can never walk into a casino without going to jail. That being said, why would you need thermal dampening without nefarious purposes?
