I just thought it would be a fun biological reason for dermal plating, that they need some shielding to properly handle their young.  Also because it makes that whole baby changing sequence all the more ridiculous (and hopefully funny).

But only until they're about one and a half, and that's just the natural indicator when a Troll baby should start potty training.  I was kicking around an idea for having a later vignette where Stan runs around peeing on trees to make them fall down, and then it just stops working and he gets really bummed out by being a big boy.
