Why does the Monofilament garrote 16F have a Availability rating so much higher than the whip 12F? Is it for Johnny Mnemonic fans?
And can the whip be used as a garrote?
-
A garrote has an anchor/grip/handhold on each end like a wire cheese cutter whereas a whip might sometimes be two-handed, but only on one end like a fishing pole. If you tried to grip the other end of the whip like a garrote it would cut your fingers off at the same time you tried to gack your target. As to the difference in availability, while the whip can cause serious damage even death, the garrote is designed with only one purpose in mind, unless you like having a insanely dangerous cheese cutter.
-
... not like you could use a monofilament whip to train tigers in a circus.
(Does a whip that thin even make the snapping sound?)
-
The monofilament whip has a handle on one end and a weight on the other. That's not unlike a garrote except that there's 2 meters of cord between.
Assuming that the monofilament extends from the handle outward on some kind of reel, I wouldn't have any problem with someone using it as a garrote if they had the skill to do so. I really don't see the difference between that and regular usage, except that you'd get fewer dice on your attack for lack of reach bonuses.
Short answer. Sure. If that's the way you want to describe it.
If you're changing the mechanics, then that's your personal business.
-
Trying to use a mf whip without a weighted tip would be like waving a party streamer in calm weather. With no mass to the wire, any cutting has to come by drawing the line through with both ends. That said, you probably don't want to make that weight large enough for someone to hold on to.
I'd be very happy to see a monofilament mesh guillotine, though. Perfect for making square cheese blocks.
-
Good point, I hear "weight" and thought of something I could hold onto, but that's not necessarily true.
On the other hand, if you use your prosthetic thumb as a counterweight, that could work, though it still means someone else could grab it.
-
I'm working on a whip with the gecko grip mod; seems like you could slap the weight with your off hand and draw to make a gecko gripped garrote.
-
:o
Give it a pilot upgrade and flying propulsion system on the weight.
Heck, use a larger weight and include an electro-shock anti-theft system. This could be fun.

I want a monofilament kusari-gama, now.
-
Hah, me too. And with a flying upgrade, so it's remote controlled. Althought a myomeric kusarigama would probably be more practical.
Actually...could use that for a smart chainlink sword, I guess; alternating sections of myomeric rope and monofilament wire. Kinda like a really lethal version of whatever Ivy uses in Soul Calibur.
Actually, now I'm trying to figure out how to make it really concealable...Spy Gear rules from Arsenal? I'm guessing a finger compartment would show up on a scanner.

All my non-Awakened characters have finger-monofilament-garrotes. Damn if I love Johnny.
-
How about a mf whip attached to the end of a cyber finger, then make the finger spin really fast.
Hand-Held Monofilament Weed Whacker! Now That would mess people up.

Monofilament NetGun.
Fire, watch people drop into little bloody pieces.

Did The Predator have one in Predator 2?

Don't think so, why? O.o

Wait, yes he did. Used it on one of the Voodoo Gang Members in the "Shit Happens" scene.
-
Yah, not only is it a net with razor sharp wire, the spikes around the perimeter after embedding themselves into the wall start retracting the net pulling it taut and basically chunkifying the victim.
Harrigan later in the film gets hit with the net as well, but he has the Predator's throwing blade in his hand at the time and slices the net open before it can kill him.

*shrugs* i'll admit it has been years since i last saw that movie . .
-
I don't think it was monofilament but it was definitely edged. It shows up in one of the awful AVP movies as well, or maybe more than one.
-
AVP = wasted potential. :(
-
AvP2 with Primal hunt was a nice game.
-
The cutting net from Predator 2 wasn't quite mf, as it wasn't designed to cut through the target so much as catch them, then have the auto-winches at its anchor points reel in enough to crush the target to death. The wires weren't thin enough to cut straight through. The predator species would still want their trophy to be intact, after all.
Monofilament grids of various styles were, however all over the place in the Cube movies. My players hate that I have all three of those films on my brainstorm list. ;D

Red Queen:"I am a baad bad girl . . "
-
The cube as inspiration for SR games...
Wow, that'd make one hell of a sadistic setting.
Some GM pick this up and start a PbP!
-
I can imagine some twisted gameshow where condemned criminals try to escape a series of gruesome deathtraps in a maze.
And the runner team waking up in the starting room for the maze.

You wake up in a 10x10x10 room, all of your gear has vanished. There is a single open door in one wall and a single dim lamp on the ceiling. In one corner is a Wall-Mounted telecom. The Screen flickers to life. You see a face that does not really ring any bells, other than some distant memories. You hear a single word:"Run"
The most railroady and assholish move a GM can pull on his players in my not very humble opinion.

Just add GLaDOS. ;D

I GMed Deadlands and was an official Demonstrator for the Paranoia RPG.
If I can think of ways to make things worse, I will.
Actually, a lot of folks loved my Paranoia games. Some purposefully tried to die just to hear the description of how the next clone got delivered.
Surprisingly, I've never used Monofilament to any great degrees other than as a replacement for Razorwire on fences. Mainly because I have a lot of evil ideas for it's use and know I'd scare people too much.
One of which involves the most horrific puppet show ever seen.
-
If i did not have the REALLY WORST LUCK when it comes to dice rolling, i'd have built Walther from Hellsing Fame by now . .
10 Monofilament Whips, one in each Finger and Thumb.
And basically, Monowire is pretty limited in ways you can use it.
Basically, either have people move into it fast, or move it fast into people.
Or if you wanna be really mean, start by the feet, do a spiral going upwards around the body and then pull taught . .
-
Monofilament (Which exists IRL, actually. Yes, some shoelaces are made of it. It's also used in the movie industry. Just not at one molecule thick.) is nearly invisible. Too damned thin.
What I'd do is have "Security Doors" made of the stuff. Just have a base slide down from the top of the doorway and a nice series of lines of monofilament tightly together. John Q. Shadowrunner goes through the doorway and gets the world's worst papercut. Or, at the very least, needs a new hand.
-
The Metahuman sized Egg-Cutter.
One long hallway, empty. One frame construction with lots of monofilament wire hanging directly under the roof of that floor.
Let it rip drop, and you have cut anything that was in there into fine thin slices.
Basically, what the Red Queen did in Resident Evil, but instead of a Laser Grid going from side to side, it's a Monofilament-Grid coming down from the top.
-

Doesn't that apply to most weapons?
Actually, what's the deal with the monofilament sword? It's like a budget katana. Are all katanas supposed to be monofilamented like the one in that SR4A story before Street Gear?
Hmm...I guess the wire is embedded into the blade, making it less lethal but more controllable. What about attaching it under tension and mounting it like a hacksaw. Urgh, there's a kitchen tool like that (other than a hacksaw) and it's bugging me that I can't remember what it's called or used for.
I suppose you could use it to floss the teeth in your cyberskull.

Stahl, pretty much this? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnuRpHkg0H8)
Which is what people have been referring to by "Cube".
(warning: kinda gory)

Yah, kinda. But mine would drop from the ceiling with the frame lowering equally on all walls.
More or less a Mix between that and this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbrqV2httgI)
O course, a bit gory too . .

Weird. The Youtube video I linked to is different than the one linked when you quoted my message.

Rockopolis, are you talking about a cheese slicer? http://www.marble-cheese-slicer.co.cc/data/B000F7JXV0/images/RSVP_White_Marble_Cheese_Slicer-l.jpg

Yes, exactly! Thank you. +1
