Title: [IC] Cannon Fodder
Post by: AffreuxLex on <05-16-13/2353:22>
The world is red, pulsating with black.  Your ears are filled with a terrible and undefinable noise.  For a moment it seems as though the sun itself has ceased to exist and the world as you know it has gone insane.  It takes a few moments to regain your senses.  As you struggle to open your eyes you are met with a blinding white light.  Instinctively, you shut your eyes again and turn your head.  After several more tries you are finally able to bring your eyes into focus and for the first time since waking up you are able to look at your surroundings.  You seem to be sitting on the floor of a round and windowless white room.  The room is so clean and white it seems nearly impossible.  Through the almost blinding brightness you can see that there seems to be no door and that the floors curve up into the vertical surfaces of the walls making it difficult to define where one begins and the other ends.  The only real definable feature of the room is a single white globe hanging from the center of the roof, illuminating the area.  In opposite ends of the room are another 3 people who also seem to be experiencing the same effects that you are.  The background noise has subsided to merely irritating which gives you a moment to think about what could be going on.  The last thing you can remember was heading off to the Stuffer Shack but you don't really remember much after getting there.  With no windows or other sources to the outside world you can't even tell if it is night or day so you check the time on your commlink only to discover that you are missing nearly 12 hours of your life.  Additionally, that noise you've been trying to ignore has been your commlink telling you that you have a new message.

>>> Congratulations on passing the test.
>>> Welcome to round 2.

One of the men in the room was a thin elf, in ordinary clothes and a black raincoat. His pale skin and white, long hair showed he was an albino, and wearing tinted glasses even inside a building just strengthened that image. He wore no apparent weapons, but from under the raincoat, several small charms dangling on his black jacket could be seen time and again. He read the message on his commlink, holding it with slightly shaking hands, disorientation and the lack of understanding showing through a serene front he desperately tried to keep.

After checking the message, he looked at the other three people also in the room. Routine started to take over his uncertainty, as he tried to determine who and what they were, first by simply looking, then opening his eyes on the astral world.

Ouch.

Cuco worked his was up to all fours, knees and hands on the floor. He shut his eyes hard and didn't dare trying to shake the disorientation away.  His brain ached and his eyes burned.  He coughed and spit onto the ground. He spit again. He looked up and saw two elves and a human female in the room.

Bitches... sweeeeet...

He coughed and spit again onto the floor. He looked up again at the obviously albino elf.

Bitches and... a... err... and a weirdo?

He rolled over and away from the pool of accumulating spit and onto his back right after wiping his mouth with the sleeve of his dark green long lined armor coat.

He could open his eyes now.
Puppeteer's assensing shows him that Cuco is definitely awakened and that he has no obvious cyber implants installed.  His mood has regular fluctuations, probably due to the confusion, but is overall rather positive.
The light was blinding, she couldnt focus. keeping her eyes open for more than a milisecond was a struggle, so much so that kyoko had to will her flare compensation to kick in to give her some respite.
to her amazement, they responded, dimming the brightness of the room to an acceptable level.
"Chikuso my head hurts, what the hell is happening here?"
kyoko could see the other 3 occupants of the room looking as disoriented as her, one looked as if he was going to hurl his guts all over the floor. they were beginning to be active but werent an immediate threat right this instant.
kyoko needed to get a grip on the situation and try to think back to what had happened.
she had popped downtown to get some new boots. she had parked up the bike in the secure underground parking, and then blam, nothing.

as the grogginess and aches began to subside, flea realised she had a message waiting for her in her AR notifications. opening it and seeing the time display on her commlink AR feed, she realised she'd been out for roughly 12 hours.
"Fakku, that must have been some strong chikuso they gave us! double frakku, that was metered parking, that is gonna cost me a fucking fortune when i get out of this place!...Round 2? what the hell is round 2? i dont even remember round 1!!!
Forcing herself to go back to her IJA training, she focuses in getting a sit-rep done.

Realising she still had her commlink and appeared to be fully clothed, she patted down her pockets to see how badly she'd been mugged...
the most baffling thing was that she had everything she set off with, her pistol was still in place.
Flea cocked it and checked the chamber to see if it was still loaded, sure enough there was a full clip of ammunition and a round in the chamber. The obvious weapon check drew a stare from the other occupants of the room, a look of trepidation on one or two of the faces.
Holstering the pistol, Flea gestured with her left hand to show she meant no harm.
"What Baka Buso kidnaps someone and leaves them in a room full of strangers still with their weapon?
any one of the dodgy clients her employer sold to would surely just have killed her or tortured her for information.
"something is definitely very very wrong here....."

The effort to get to her feet was immense. whatever had happened to her made her feel like she had slept for a week, and her muscles hadn't heard the alarm this morning.
Her satchel bag was placed against the wall next to where she had been sitting, much to Flea's relief, her helmet, tablets and gecko kit was still in it.
The helmet immediately went on her head, closely followed by her gecko gloves, leg guards and shoe adapters all wirelessly set to walk mode.

taking stock of the situation, Flea put on her headphones, enabled the audio enhancement and took a good look around. "we all got in here, therefore there must be some kind of entrance/exit. this place could easily be a room in one of those trids set on the corporate space stations":

Audio perception, +3 for audio enhance: 9d6.hits(5)=3 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4053396/)
Realising if she had an AR message, she must have had a matrix connection (or connection to something with matrix message protocol ability) at some point in the prior 12 hours.
Flea attempts to connect to the matrix with her commlink.
To further test her theory, Flea initiates the skinlink connection with her helmet and mentally switches her radio signal scanner to active search mode, instructing it to overlay any nodes found into her helmet imagelink:
rating six scanner gives 1 hit:6d6.hits(5)=1 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4053408/)
Flea also tries to coax her dummy commlink into doing something useful, and fires up its built-in scan utility to check for any hidden nodes nearby:
Electronic warfare R5, scan R1 gives 2 hits.6d6.hits(5)=2 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4053421/)
Wishing like crazy she had her "work" 'link with her, she waits what seem like hours for the results to come back,
in the meantime, Flea asks the other occupants:
"Is anyone hurt, and does anyone here remember anything from the past 12 hours?"
Puppeteer's assensing shows that Flea is also awakened and her aura feels different to that of your own. you deduce she must be an adept of similar magical prowess as yourself. there are no implants to be found. she appears calm, though you assense anxiety and trepidation within her.
Another one in the room was a female elf, blond hair kneeling down, shielding her eyes from the bright light. As she began to regain her composure and take in  her new environment, She slowly rose to and took the posture of an accomplish business.Figure that its best to put up a good front in her new setting, important that i don't look shaken.

From afar, you examine each individual carefully.

The first is an obviously elvin woman who carries herself with a sense of confidence.  She is the first to her feet.

The next one is a human male.  Younger guy, perhaps in is late teens or even early 20s.  It is hard to tell behind the big black handlebar mustache.  He has long black hair and a long coat as well.  He seems to be more affected from whatever happened than anyone else and appears to be on the verge of vomiting.

The last appears to be a young woman of Japanese decent, probably mid 20s.  She seems average in almost every way; height, build, even her plain but not ugly looks.  She appears to be mostly interested in gearing herself up and rummaging through her satchel but you can tell she has not let you and the other go unnoticed.

((Assenssing individuals has been answered by the other players))

Using your second sight, you glance around the general area.  You are unable to find any astral signatures other that what is currently present.  You press your ability harder, trying to find something out of the ordinary, anything that might be different but you find nothing.  The whole place seems incredibly average and bland.  Except... something... no wait, it was nothing...   No, it was something... that long haired guy seems to have something of yours but you can't seem to tell what but you know it's yours... somehow you just know.

-- Gustovness --

You roll over on to your back and look up at the bright white roof.  Or at least you think it's the roof since all the edges are rounded out and there is no definable place where the wall ends.  As you contemplate the featureless ceiling you notice a slight bump pressing softly against the backside of your pants.
Gustovness perception roll (5d6.hits(5)=2) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4053961/)
-- Csjarrat --

You look around the room and see an amazing assortment of nothing.  No hard lines, no edges, no cracks.  It seems as though the room is just one solid piece.  You close your eyes and try to concentrate on the sounds of the room instead and again there is nothing except the noises made by the other occupants of the room.

Once you decide to check your matrix connection your find only further frustration as you discover you appear to be in a dead zone.  There are no connections to the matrix to be found!  For some strange reason you don't even seem to be able to detect the PANs from the other people.

As you pull your helmet over your head, it doesn't seem to fit quite the same.  It seems tighter.  That or your head grew during whatever happened.  You also find breathing to be slightly more strenuous.  Not difficult but still a fraction more work than it used to be.
Csjarrat perception roll (6d6.hits(5)=2) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4053986/)
You fire up your commlink to try to reach out to someone, anyone only to find you have no connection to the matrix.

Cuco squints, half from the light in his face, half from the discomfort of whatever is his back pocket.  He rolls onto his side, reaches into it, and pulls out the object to inspect it.

You pull the object out from your back pocket and discover that you are holding a doll made of burlap.  You squeeze it and can feel cotton inside.  It is a very basic doll, rounded out arms and legs with no hands or feet, and a large round head with a huge black handlebar mustache!  The mustache is far too large for a doll this size but it is such quality work you can't help but be impressed.  The mustache appears to have been made with real human hair and when you look closely you can see that each individual hair has been carefully and permanently attached to the doll.  It is obvious to you that who ever created this mustache was a true aficionado and spent many hours caring for and grooming this mustache.
ok, first off, LOL...
Cuco stumbles his way up to his feet...

"YO!" he starts, still half stumbling, almost looking rather drunk, holding the apparent voodoo doll of himself up in the air rather proudly, "Is this someone's idea of telling me I should pull my head out of my own ass?"

Cuco then brings the doll down closer to inspect it.

"Tremendo bigotone, asere..." He says as he approvingly taps the doll's mustache, smile on his own face.  "Let's see if this works..." he announces, as he makes it obvious for everyone to see his fondling of the doll between its legs.  His eyeballs roll up towards the ceiling and he bites his lower lip, half hoping to actually feel something.

Flea looked at the young man and as he announced his discovery to the room, it appeared to be a mustachioed doll, perhaps it was meant to resemble him? at the very least, it was a good piss-take out of his old-skool biker facial hair.
and then, the young lad starting wanking the doll off, apparently expecting some climactic experience judging by the way he dramatically rolled his head back in expectation.
"first the retching, now self gratification via a doll? and within minutes of waking up? i think this kid had a much bigger dose than the rest of us"

leaving him to his own devices, kyoko continued with her sit-rep drills.
the wireless results returned negative unsurprisingly. though if i have a commlink, why havent the others?

Hey, i said, are you guys ok? is anyone hurt?
do any of you have your commlinks or electronics with you?

mentally shutting down the signal scanner in the helmet, Flea activated the laser range finder and willed it to display real-time measurements to her helmet image link.
she took a good look around the room, mentally copying the distances to the far wall, ceiling and the ultra-bright light into her commlink memory as a to-do note, and tagging that in a minimized display in her main AR feed.
Flea swept the range finder along the walls + roof to try and determine whether the room was indeed as spherical as it appeared to be, or whether there were any differentiations between surfaces.
the action of rolling her head around to measure the distances highlighted that her helmet didnt fit right, it felt tighter than before. it was a subtle difference but definite.

"where the fakku am i and why is it hard to breathe in here?"
Flea's heart heart began to race, and instinctively she reached for her anti-histmanines. she popped her daily dose patch onto her skin, removing the old one and discarding it onto the floor, but felt no relief.
"drek, drek, drek!!! she thought of her father and imagined him comforting her as he did when she was a child. "it's ok my cherub, be calm little one. think of your mother, what would she do?", she'd be tough, she'd be strong and she'd find a way out of here dad" she mentally replied.
the thought of her dad made her wonder; does this have something to do with him? is this a renraku lab? but why would it be? FOCUS FLEA, THIS IS ISN'T HELPING YOU

The helmet came off, kyoko inspecting it at length, willing her vision magnification to let her eyes pry into the details of the fitting mechanism and the attachment ports for her built in electronics. Her breathing felt easier, though it was difficult to tell whether it was just because of her focus, the anti-histamines or removing the helmet

"guys i asked you a very simple fucking question, do you have any electronics on you? if so, get them out, check everything. i think these guys are fucking with our kit.. and you, QUIT WANKING THAT DOLL!!!"
perception test, looking at helmet sizing (6d6.hits(5)=1) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4054534/)
putting the helmet down, kyoko immediately draws her machine pistol and lets her instincts take over. her old field maintenance drills, committed to muscle memory during training have the weapon dis-assembled within seconds.
Kyoko pays particular attention to the firing mechanism, manually unchambering the rounds as they are fed in and letting the mechanism "fire" and pick up a new round from the magazine. she zooms into the ejected rounds and looks for any signs of tampering, verifying that these are her rounds and that they are still viable. She tests the fit of the rounds in the barrel, making sure the barrel hadn't magically been made a tad smaller in her sleep. Having your machine pistol jam or backfire is the last thing you need when the shit has hit the fan.
perception test, MP + ammunition (6d6.hits(5)=3) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4054537/)
with her focus on her old military drills, an idea pops into mind. check the atmospheric pressure. she felt like she did the day after she landed in korea. they had been on an op to disrupt the korean people's liberation army's communications and supply routes through the mountain passes and the altitude had made her feet swell and breathing tough.
She mentally initiated the connection to her jacket's weather sensor, questioning for a second why it had been turned off. it had been on and telling me it would rain tonight (last night now i guess?). she queried the device's logs and set it to active mode, hoping for an accurate reading of the atmospheric pressure....
Flea turned to the group, expecting an answer to her questions

As he started to piece his immediate surroundings together, so did the disorientation disappear from Puppeteer's behaviour. I don't know who i crossed but this needed some serious preparation to pull out. What he saw in the auras of the others mostly convinced him that they were also victims of the same sick joke as him. The rest of his suspicion could wait for another opportunity.

As he heard the voice of the Japanese woman getting more agressive, he addressed her first. The guy with the doll could wait, though Puppeteer couldn't shake that feeling that the doll was significant. "Peace, woman, we heard you the first time clearly. I for one, had to gather my bearings, because this situation, as you also might understand, takes a heavy toll on us all. I'm not hurt, physically at least, and i don't sense that there was spiritual damage done to any of us." When the pistol suddenly appeared in her hands, he jumped a little. O, spirits, make sure she doesn't snap just right now. Then the routine of her movements assured him, this was a method for her to calm down. "Unfortunately, i don't remember any details about how i got here, or what the first round was if this must be the second." Puppeteer watched the other's faces closely, as they surely would betray if they knew about the message he got. And he seriously racked his brain, trying to call back any events of the last twelve hours.

Cuco clutches the doll close to his chest and frowns at Flea's outburst like a concerned parent holding their child.

"You're asking if I'm okay? Besides for the date rape? Yeah, I'm peachy."

Cuco puts the doll into one of his jacket's inner pockets, inconspicuously checking for his extendable baton while he's there so the others don't see him reaching for a weapon.

Still there... won't do much good against the heat though...

He spits on the ground one last time before shouting at the walls in the room, addressing no one in particular, "OKAY!  We're up! I don't like suspense so start talkin' or we're gonna start clawin' out way out of here by force.  I get the feeling you know exactly what I mean, and I'm gonna start with that hideous lamp."

He then directs his attention to the others, "When you remember something, say something, otherwise, assume no one remembers shit.  Anyone notice any type of recording device in here? A microphone? A camera? Jujuman..." he says looking at Puppeteer, Since I'm here, and I ain't no poser, I figure you ain't either.  Anything you wanna tell me about this?"

He pats the outside of his own jacket where the doll is kept, then cocks an eyebrow up.

"I ain't one for holdin' grudges, but I get the feeling that unless we get instructions from our host to start beating the shit out of each other, our fates have suddenly become intertwined..."

On the surface your helmet appears to be the same as before.  There doesn't seem to be anything obviously new or changed that would alter the fit although it does feel slightly heavier than you remember.

You take your time and carefully examine your ammunition and barrel.  There is no evident tampering and everything is working as it should.  You sincerely doubt anyone other than yourself has touched this weapon.

Your atmospheric readings show an ambient pressure of 101.4 kPa and holding steady.

-- Ren --

You close your eyes and concentrate hard trying to find any fragment of a memory from the last 12 hours.  You are unable to find even a glimpse or a flash of anything, according to your brain the last 12 hours didn't even exist.  In your internal timeline you were on the street outside the Stuffer Shack and then on the floor in this room in the next moment with nothing in between.

You turn your gaze upon the mustachioed doll and are able to get a quick look before the human man puts it into his jacket.  You are able to see that it is a bonded drain focus with an incredible and surprisingly familiar aura.  Though you have never seen this doll before, it has been bonded to you by you!  There is no mistaking your own handy work.

-- JDA --

You do a quick inventory about yourself.  All your equipment is exactly how you remember it when you went out.  Your gear is intact, your software is in place and your pair of dice are still in your pocket.  No wait, you didn't have a pair of dice in your pocket when you went out...

((You now have your survival, tracking, first aid, and locksmithing active softs loaded.))

-- Gustovness --

As you carefully examine the room you are unable to find any recording devices of any sort.  The walls, floor, and roof are all featureless save the lamp hanging in the center.  Your surroundings are flawless and you are confident that if anyone had tried to hide something in here, you would have found it by now.  One detail does catch your eye though, the lack of detail.  You had to have gotten in somehow so why are there no seams anywhere?  Even a well hidden door couldn't have escaped you with this thorough search.

Puppeteer cocked his head to the left, expression like when someone has a mild headache. He answered Alex in that position. "I don't remember any occasion when the spirits of any megacorporation collided with mine." After a moment of deliberation, he added "Although, considering how the last twelve hours are lost in the fog of mystery for me, i cannot be sure what transpired during that period." Just then, he suddenly snapped his head in the direction of the other guy. Complete bafflement permeated his expression, silencing him almost mid-sentence. He tried to answer the man when he asked about the doll, but only something incomprehensible came from his mouth at first.

Then, with an almost visible effort, he pulled himself together, again. "That doll in your pocket," he said with quavering voice "it somehow seems to be... well, its spirit talks to me in a familiar way." All the while, his thoughts were racing. How is this even possible? O, Lord of the Great Unknown, help me with thy wisdom, and show me the way out of the mist of despair.

You turn toward the wall and lean over the rounded edges to get to the flat part.  As you tap on them you notice a distinct metallic ringing.  Along certain points you can notice a slight change in the tone.  Tracing the tone changes mentally, you are able to trace out several straight lines and you are able to deduce that the room is made up of several large and rectangular sheets of metal somehow welded together without producing a single visible flaw.  Further investigation leads you to believe that the walls are quite thick too, at least a couple inches.

"No, you misunderstood, there is no spirit residing in that item. However, it is blessed by our ancestors, possessing some of their power, and able to pass it on to the right person." Puppeteer took a deep breath before he went on. "And by the meagre look i could take on its aura, it is me who helped the spirits bestow that power on it." Slightly hesitant, he took a step towards the other man. "Can i take a closer look at it, please?"

Puppeteer was taken aback for a moment by the rude refusal, but then he answered in a deceptively amicable voice. "OK, man, let it be your way. By the way, both of us should be ashamed, the first to introduce herself was Alex and we still didn't return the courtesy." He turned to the elven woman, bowing slightly while talking. "So, i'm known as Puppeteer, and as our friend here said, i am capable of stepping into the spirit world. Though, how he knew it, it's a mystery."

Kyoko finishes her weapons drill satisfied with the condition of her weapon, and re-holsters it.
She looks up to the rest of the group:
"Pupeteer, Alex, i'm sorry. My name is Kyoko, though i tend to be known as Flea.
I'm not affiliated with any of the corporations, i'm a courier for a weapons company and freelance on the side intercepting signals.
my kit keeps me alive and i never, ever let anyone i don't trust near it. my helmet appears to have been meddled with. its heavy and it feels tight and its really freaking me out. you guys should check through all your kit to see if its been tampered with or turned off, as i couldn't find any electronics at all with my scanner, yet you've got commlinks with you. if anyone has some tools i can borrow for a few minutes, i'm going to have to take this helmet apart and get to the bottom of what they've done to my kit."

Kyoko sits on the floor and begins to take the padding out of the inside of the helmet, starting with the ear and neck protectors, and working up to the impact padding along the roof of the helmet.
she takes off the forehead protectors and opens the accessory port to inspect the GPS, flashlight, range finder and visor deployment/retraction motors.

Cuco starts rubbing his own eyes, trying to calm himself down.  He lets out a sigh.

As you take apart and inspect your helmet, you find a piece of equipment you don't immediately recognize.  Whoever put it there must have had some amazing technical skill because you thought there was literally no more space to fit in anything else.    It takes some time to go over the unfamiliar design but you are eventually able to recognize some base components.  This must be some sort respirator.  Something this size probably can't be all that great but it seems like it would be enough to filter out pollen or other large airborne substances.  There also appears to be a tiny microchip attached to the image link node.  You can't tell what it does but you're pretty sure that if you mess with it, you might wind up deactivating the whole unit.
((The helmet has been fitted with a rating 2 respirator which is why it was more difficult to breath because you had to pull air in through the filters when your helmet was on.  To save time on exploring your helmet, the microchip is an advanced alpha technology image link suite adding an additional +1 to your image linked rolls.))
re-assembling the helmet, Flea dons it and initiates the skinlink connection. The helmet syncs with her commlink, deploying the visor as it establishes an AR connection.
The range finder is activated and sent to the visor's image link.
Kyoko willed her gecko kit into "climb" mode and tentatively approached the wall.

Knowing this was a journey into the unexpected, flea focused and concentrated on channeling her inner strength, hoping she wouldn't need it.

--  Csjarrat --

Climbing up the wall and along the roof is a breeze.  The curved edges actually make it quite a bit easier.  As you approach the light, it is almost blinding.  With your flare compensators you are still able to make out most of the detail.  You rock back and forth in your gear, checking for a strong hold.  Your initial examination turns up nothing except for it being a glowing white orb.  You carefully remove your hand and reach out toward the light...

-- Ren --

You reach deep into yourself and summon up the energy to cast your spell, a relatively easy thing to do on a normal day.  Today is not a normal day and you find you have to struggle much more than usual.  You can feel something holding back your spell but you persevere and are able to barely shove your way past the barrier.  Soon you find yourself looking into a vast room with a high ceiling.  Metal girders are abundantly stretching out from the concrete floor.  Dust is everywhere and the place is not very well lit.  As you turn to survey the area around yourself it becomes apparent that you are in the middle of a large warehouse or even an old aircraft hangar.  You continue your circle and soon you can see the outside of the room your body is standing within.  A large metal framework surrounds the room along with scaffolding at various intervals.  Based on your limited knowledge, it almost appears as if the room was constructed around you.  You notice movement out of the corner of your eye and when you turn to look you can see a human male dressed in a white lab coat speaking to someone over his  commlink.  He is nodding emphatically and is writing something on a clipboard.
Quick reminder:  Only Ren knows all this until his character decides to share.
-- Csjarrat --

Your hand is only inches from the orb when you hear someone below sigh.  You roll your eyes and don't notice right away that you've touched the orb.  A crystalline sound echos through the room before the orb drops to the floor and shatters.  The room goes pitch black.  For a moment there is silence then a whirring sound starts to emanate from the spot where the orb would have crashed.

-- Ren --

You noticed the sound of the orb shattering.

Puppeteer didn’t think too much of the sound inside. The others would take care of it, and if it posed any threat, they would shout. The outside provided a much more interesting view at the moment. He spared one more look to the outside surface of the room, to see if there was any exit or weaker point, then with a thought, he transferred the viewpoint closer to the ‘lab assistant’ with the clipboard, and took a closer look at him. He wanted to check who the assistant was and if his garb or his immediate surroundings could give any hint about the situation.

The description of the spell doesn’t determine any action type to move the sensor so I assumed it is like simple movement (no action), if you want to play this differently, please tell me and I will modify the post accordingly.
In the gloomy light cast by your flashlight, you can see a small drone hovering above the shattered remains.  The blades of it's twin fans whirring are the only sound you can hear.  You can see lights cover the drone's body which in every direction, they don't appear to be damaged so it is likely that they were switched off.  The drone turns toward you and you hear a new noise, a sort of "clack clack clack" which starts off slowly but quickly gains momentum.  The drone completes it's turn toward you and you can see a tiny little gatling gun spinning at a high speed.

-- Ren --

Your second examination of the room exterior provides no new information.  The structure is solid and was likely built around you while during the time period you can't remember.  Next, you pop your viewpoint over to the man in the white lab coat.  His emphatic conversation over the commlink makes it nearly impossible to read what is on the clipboard.  The man himself is rather unremarkable.  Average height, average weight, short brown hair, and glasses.
To gain any further information about the clipboard or the man, you will need to roll a perception test.

You do not notice the new noises going on in the room.

The room is filled with the flashing lights of gun fire and ricochet sparks.  Confined within the room, the noise is near deafening.  Flea stares down the barrel of her gun as she lets loose a second burst at the drone.  Her chest was heaving from her heavy breathing while she lowers the gun and looks over the smoking wreckage that once threatened her life but was now nothing more than spare parts.  The various smoke and fumes coming up from the wreckage burn everyone's lungs slightly but not enough to cause any difficulty breathing.  The stink of burnt oil might take awhile to get over though.

You can hear a crackle echoing for a moment in the chamber coming from seemingly nowhere.  Soon it is followed by a male voice.

Expensive? Yes.  Pointless? No.  You have all performed adequately.  The room will open in five minutes, from there we will discuss the terms of your continued employment.

Without awaiting response you hear a second crackle and the voice is gone.

"Haha, no, I think you just pissed it off. Nice pitch by the way"

Flea holsters her pistol and bows to each of the others in the room, picking out their faces in the gloom with her helmet light.
The smoldering remains of the drone give off a warm glow and Flea moves over to inspect the wreckage of the disabled drone; looking for any salvage that might come in handy.

Still sitting, with his arms covering his head - a simple reaction to the wildly flying bullets - Puppeteer sent an apologetic thought the spirits way. ”Please forgive me, O Mighty One, as it seems my companions took care of the immediate danger. Please remain at my side for a short time, as it is quite possible that we may yet encounter danger.” While Flea checked the remains of the drone, he rewove the spell he had to let go, to check what became different on the outside, and took a little bit more comfortable position, leaning against one wall.

Then takes a pause and looks at everyone in the room pausing a moment on each one to study them. after this she begans to straighten herself up.Mr. Johnson, i must disagree it was only expensive and pointless for you. You had to know our capabilities before you put us in here. However, it wasn't pointless for me as you have given me a wealth of information about my companions. We got combat experience and magic that my dear Mr. Johnson will cost you. Which i guess only makes it more expensive for you.She then rolls the dice and doesn't look at the results. You lose, Mr. Johnson. alright ladies and gentleman this is where i excell at, So put on your game faces and keep them on. Then just lay back and enjoy the ride. Because, theres no way in hell this guy is better than me.She reaches down to pick up the dice and for the first time looks at what she rolled and smiles. -- Csjarrat --

You carefully sort through the wreckage, looking for anything that may be of use in any way.  It soon becomes apparent to your keen eye that many of the systems were designed to burn out or self destruct upon the drone becoming disabled.  However one part is surprisingly intact.  You are unable to determine its function but the face plate clearly displays the Renraku corporate logo.  Your in depth investigation into the wreckage turns up signs that this may have been intentionally built to survive.  While picking through the pieces of the destroyed gatling gun, you find the ammunition bay and discover that it has been loaded with rubber bullets.

-- Ren --

You concentrate and extend your sight once again.  You feel the familiar pressure of the barrier trying to hold back your senses but once again you push through it.  As your vision returns to focus you can see the area is the same as you had left it except the man in the lab coat is gone.  You look all around yourself but are unable to spot the clipboard, he must have taken it with him.

-- All --

The whole room is suddenly filled with an intense metallic screaming sound and sparks begin to shoot out of one side of the chamber.  The noise is so loud that you are forced to cover your ears and back as far away from the origin as possible.

-- Ren --

You turn your sight around to see if you can see what is making that horrible sound.  A rather large drone on tracks has moved itself up against the side of the enclosure and has begun using a series of torches and saws to cut in to it.  The lines that it cuts are perfectly straight and intersect each other at 90 degree angles.  It appears as though it is cutting out a doorway.

-- All --

After almost exactly 5 minutes, a large rectangular hole appears as the previously attached section of wall falls to the ground with a loud crash.  Through the hole you can see a rather menacing looking drone on tracks backing away.  After it has moved out of view a woman's voice appears in the air.

Please exit the chamber and enter the room on the far side of the hangar with the blue door.  I am waiting for you there.  If you require a moment to stretch or would like to get a soy kaf please do so now before we begin our negotiations.  I do not like to be kept waiting so please do not take long.

Don't like to be kept waiting?

"Hey kiss my ass sweetheart!"

Cuco, already annoyed from the metal's screeching and tearing into the room as if it were his own head, stumbled out of the room and into the hangar.  He looked around the hangar, eyes adjusting to the light.

Focus... You have your objective...

Cuco searched his surroundings. He knew what he was looking for.

He found it. Eyes locked onto his objective, he began to walk over to it.

Gotcha.

Cuco served himself a cup of soykaf, hoping to combat the drain his spell had on him with it.

He looked around at nothing in particular and threw up a middle finger to the disembodied voice.  He took a sip of the soykaf and was taken aback.

"Oh, hell, this is actually really good!"

The others, exiting the pseudo prison, could see Cuco whispering to his cup while holding a middle finger up in the air.

The remnants of the drones innards were pretty sorched.
Flea was expecting a few bullet holes and moderate internal damage, maybe a few broken Opitcal boards, but this looked like it had self destructed, melting circuit boards and frying its own servoes.
All apart from one unidentifiable part; branded Renraku.
The hairs on her neck stood up as far as they possibly could. This couldn't be a coincidence...
This had to be something to do with dad....
Flea grabbed the ammunition belt, noticing the drone had been loaded with non-lethal rounds and breathed a sigh of relief. Having seen what these rubber rounds did to protesters in Korea, she was glad she took it down before it had chance to fire again. She didnt fancy having to do a "job" with a broken nose and welts the size of apples all over her.
Flea stuffed the ammunition belt into her jacket pocket and jogged over to others, who were making their way towards the soycaf machine. Cuco had beaten them all to it and the warm smell made Flea realise how thirsty she was.
Catching up to Puppeteer and Alex, she spoke in a low voice to both of them.

"I dont know if this helps us in the negotations, but that drone had Renraku markings inside. It was also loaded with non-lethal ammunition. In the interest of open-ness, my family has 'History' with Renraku. My father died in their service and I never received one scrap of information as to why."

As they stepped out into the light of the main hangar, Flea checked her commlink for matrix connection and initiated her helmet GPS to get some idea of where they were; hopefully now they were free of that faraday cage-like prison she could at least get a rough satellite fix.
The hangar was immense in size, you could easily get an intercontinental aircraft in here. Flea scanned around the walls, soaking up the details and sweeping her range finder onto the different surfaces to get an idea of the scale of the building.
However big the hangar was, it made the prison look tiny in comparison. It was almost comical to think of the fear that place had put into her just minutes before.
The soycaf smelt so good, but a nagging suspicion about her 'hosts' lay in her mind...

Puppeteer was disappointed with the disappearance of the lab guy. He was awfully fast in getting out. When the large drone appeared and started to work, he watched it for a short period, wishing he could send his ears far away from the screaming steel. Finally, when he had enough of the vibrations shaking his whole body, he let go of the spell, and returned his sight to his body.

He stood up and told the others what to expect outside. Then he waited that way for the drone to finish its job. When it was over, his ears rang for a few more minutes, a light headache on its way. Without alternatives, he exited their prison with the others. At the sight of Cuco’ body language he smiled a little. Then he was taken aback by what Flea revealed.

“So, the Raku” he murmured, “and you say you have a history? We’ll have to see what they want and if we are in the pot with you or because of you. But it doesn’t matter right now. First and foremost, we’ll have to see about getting out.”

While going through the hangar and into the room at the far end, Puppeteer stretched his awareness to the astral, checking what the place looked like, and if there was a presence besides his helper and himself.

"I dont know for sure, but that drone looks like it self-destructed after I disabled it. There was far more internal damage than a machine pistol like mine could cause.
The only parts that weren't damaged were the ammunition, which was non-lethal, and a mystery box with the renraku brand on it. It could be a ruse or a deliberate message, i'm not sure which yet, but I thought you'd appreciate the heads-up.
Renraku are sneaky Chikuso's and i wanted to be open with you in case they use my family history as a How do you say it?curve-ball during these negotiations. Keep your eyes on Cuco after his soykaf. I dont fancy losing another twelve hours and meeting another one of those drones".

You find your connection to the matrix is working once more.  It takes only a moment to come up with your GPS co-ordinates indicating that you are inside a hangar on the south east end of the Seattle-Tac airport.  A cross check with other available information shows that the hangar belongs to Federated-Boeing but it has been sitting in disuse for the last five years.

-- Ren --

You now find it much easier to reach out with your magical senses.  Instantly, you get a hit.  An extremely powerful magician is nearby.  Although you can't determine their exact location, you can be certain that the magician is within one of the offices lining the far wall of the hangar.  Something is making the magician hazy and difficult to read but it is apparent that that person is behind the barrier that had enclosed you before.  You can also detect signatures of clairvoyance and clairaudiance spells.  Although they are no longer active you can tell that those are how the people have been keeping tabs on you while you were locked in the room.

Cuco crushed his empty soykaf cup and tossed it on the ground.

5 nuyen? I ain't even mad that was actually half decent.

Cuco headed over to Puppeteer and pulled out the mustached doll.

"OK, Juju, whoever the hell you are and whatever the hell this is..."

Cuco holds up the doll.

Cuco hands Puppeteer the doll.

That one must be a powerful initiate, being able to conceal not only his presence but even his spells. The thought wasn’t very encouraging. But as Puppeteer couldn’t help it, he simply had to live with it.
When reaching the room, he silently drew next to one of the walls, leaning against it. The presence of the spirit was a little bit comforting, although he was pretty sure the other party also had its own astral guard. Now, let’s see what future holds in its hands.

Then, just as he settled in, Cuco produced the next surprise. "Thanks... appreciate it." he said in a marginally unsure voice. Then, he started to take a closer look at the doll, both in astral and in physical.

Observing the handover of the weird looking doll, Flea notices a flurry of AR messages come through with her connection to the 'trix restored.
Flea breathed a sigh of relief when the sattelite fix was established, showing her position as still inside seattle boundaries, though a disused hangar at the airport might make an escape tricky.
"Good news guys, we're still in seattle, though we're at the airport. I'm back online too, so check your 'links."
Mentally commanding the GPS overlay into her helmet image link, she requested three routes to be calculated to downtown Just in case.
The thought of downtown reminder her of her bike, parked up in expensive metered parking.
She tentatively opened a connection to it and requested it's node provide a gridlink co-ordinate to be overlaid on her helmet GPS, fearing the worst for her account.

There were three messages waiting in her AR feed, all from Joey.

Your initial examination of the doll turns up no new information.  It is a simple canvas doll with basic features except for an exquisite handle bar mustache made of human hair.  As you open your eyes to the astral however, something interesting turns up.  As you discovered before from a distance, it is indeed a drain focus which has undergone the ritual to be bound to yourself.  Obviously you must have done this sometime during the period that you are unable to remember.  However, mixed amongst the various hues and shapes of the aura you are able to pick out something a bit different, vague enough to be difficult to spot yet distinct enough to recognize.  Small bits are reminiscent  of Cuco's aura.  Something about this doll was once a very important part of him.

-- Csjarrat --

In addition to Cuco's, Alexi's, and Puppeteer's commlinks you also find one more broadcasting a public PAN profile.  The rest of the hits are all common nodes associated with the airport public terminals.  The nearby PAN is for a woman calling herself Anastasiya Zhenya.  Her profile claims that she is 5'6", 102lbs, red haired, green eyed.  She is a Roman Catholic from the southwestern area of Tír na nÓg known as Leinster and looking for someone special.

Your agents don't turn up anything immediately but they continue to run and search.

-- All --

You enter the room and find a woman seated behind a large glass desk.  It's not possible to make out her height while seated but she is a fairly thin elf with red hair and green eyes.  She motions for you to take a seat at one of the chairs arranged in a small arc around her desk.  After everyone has taken their seats, she begins to speak with a noticeable Russian accent.

Well done on the second phase of your testing.  The nature of the mission we have for you necessitates team work and the ability to trust one another.  There will be no more tests.  Once we finish here you will visit Dr. Vostok to get your immunization booster then board your flight to the Caribbean League.  Before you ask, here are your personally signed documents giving us permission to erase your memories in order to proceed with our test.

On the end of her desk, four physical pieces of paper are laid out with each of your names written on the top.

Before I go any farther, this is your final chance to back out.  After this you will be obligated to fulfill your contract to us or forfeit your lives.  Any questions?

someone verify the authenticity of these documents if possible.  Check 4 signs of stress in the signatures if possible.

Something didn't add up. They would not have been able to convince me to sign anything like this with only money, or some physical incentive. Puppeteer also found the fact of any written material suspicious. This wasn't the usual method in their line of work. Of course, he wouldn't accept just someone's words on this kind of drek, in fact, he still didn't.
"Actually, Mr. Johnson, i think you do not see the situation clearly. With recent events and the fact that neither of us remembers anything about signing a contract or allowing anybody to rape our minds, it is not a question if i want out. You have to give me details to convince me i want in." He looked into the elven woman's eyes. The sheer lack of rationality of the situation made him frank and more than a bit irritated, as well as somewhat confused. He pointed at Flea. "As she said, the details of our... supposed contract might help."

While waiting for an answer, he slipped back to astral sight. He looked at the four documents, supposedly signed by all of them. He looked for any signature, any indicator that these had anything to do with any of them.

Besides had we known in advance that we were going on to the carribean, I and my team would have brought with us better supplies to ensure the success of the mission. That Mr. Johnson is in both of our best  interest. So we need to know about this contract? What is involved and the lenght og time we are obligated to it for? The paper and ink are completely mundane.  Very slight and indistinguishable traces of astral signatures can be seen from people who had simply handled the documents but nothing has been altered or tampered with in any magical way.

-- Csjarrat --

You discover a secondary PAN running in hidden mode.

-- All --

The woman glowers at everyone for a moment.  When Alex is finished speaking, the woman leans back and seems to consider the situation.  Once again, she speaks with her heavy Russian accent.

Very well, you have proven yourselves capable and my colleagues agree that we can share a little bit more with you but I can not give you specifics until you all have committed.  As I said, you will be travelling to the Caribbean League for this mission.  Teamwork and skill will be necessary and you have all shown that you have both.  Even so, it is very risky.  You will be travelling incognito as business partners visiting a recent acquisition.  Your flight will be leaving at 0900 hours and what you do before that time is up to you.

It is currently around 7:45am.

There is enough space on the aircraft for any gear you may need smuggled into the country but you will have to make your own arrangements with our pilot for a secretive pickup.  Your flight back to Seattle will leave tonight at 2300 hours local time, whether you are on it or not.  I'm sure you no longer remember but previous to your test we had discussed compensation.  There will be no upfront payment and we will not budge on the amount.  The corporation feels it is being very generous at 1.5 million.

Holy crap, that is a lot of money. No way is that right for one day's work. I haven't earned a fraction of that even with all my runs put together...
Turning to face a confident, strong looking Alex, Flea's Radio scanner AR overlay showed Alex's commlink node broadcasting loud and clear. Setting that node as the destination for a message, Flea mentally willed a push message into being, dictating the text via thought into the AR window.
//Matrix Push Message v1.0.2b// from node://<unknown node>// Alex, it's Flea. I haven't got your commcode so had to resort to a push notice. That is a *huge* sum, I think this is a suicide run and that they don't actually expect to have to pay us (did you get the whole *very risky* thing?!) can you see if you can get an advance payment as a "goodwill statement" and find out what the hell they want us to do for that kind of cash? also, who the fakku are "the corporation"??//End message//

As i assumed, still not saying anything, just BS. I don't know what she expects... Puppeteer thought. But as the elf reached the payment, his mind went numb for a moment. One and a half million? It took some time to process the information but by the time it sank in, he already knew this couldn't be true. They just simply don't give that amount of money for any kind of job that takes not even a single day. And though the possibilities that might be opened up with that kind of money made his head swim, he dragged himself back to the situation at hand.
Still looking at the astral, he checked the aura of the elven woman. Together with her expression and body language, it should give enough hints about her honesty and sincerity.

"Yeah but it could be fun... besides... what's crazier? Risking this big payday? Or ensuring a slow and boring death of old age by sitting this one out?"

Trickster let out a chuckle, "Fair enough, omae, but keep your eyes open on this run... else the joke might be on you...

Cuco nearly shit himself at the sound of his mentor's warning.

Alex agrees that this does sound like a suicide run. Thats alot of money, and theres no way that they plan on paying it even if we survive this run. But I'm not in a position to disagree as i don't believe they will simply allow us to walk away. Wait.. I have an idea
Alex gives a look that implies she is recalling something, trying to clear the cob webs and then in her best attempt to con this woman.
Yes, that was right, It's fuzzy but 1.5 mill. does ring a bell. Now What about the cash advance that we discuss as we'll need that to finish equiping us for this run. Especially for this run based on the cobwebs.

What the hell? Didn't she already say that we supposedly agreed that there would be no upfront payment?

A sharp cackle and, "Oh we absolutely have at least one mark on this trip now!!"

Cuco fought hard to hold back an outward burst of laughter.

Shut up! We have nothing to work with yet.

Oh, I have something, and as soon as I see an opening you're going to take it...

Cuco betrayed an outward smile.

You watch the woman carefully as she speaks, paying special attention to the inflections in her voice and the way she holds herself.  She doesn't appear to be outright lying but she does seem to be holding something back.  As you scan her aura, you can tell that she is generally healthy and her essence is lower than your own even though you are unable to detect any cyberware.   Her aura holds an air of confidence and she is not awakened.

Please forgive me for highlighting some obvious flaws in this plan so far, but if I've heard you right, we're traveling on a "business trip" where only one of us actually has a suit, and you've given us less than 1hr 15mins to get all the way across Seattle to our respective homes to pick up our kit in rush hour traffic and make the return journey in time to smuggle our working gear across international borders with no provision of a clean SiN, fixer or a safe house on the other end?
As if that whole pile of crap wasn't enough, on top of all this, you're telling me I came voluntarily along to have my brain screwed with and yet I left my bike downtown?

You need to start talking before we start walking, because I don't feel like working with an outfit that does this to it's "employees"

The woman leans back and closes her eyes while she thinks.  Almost a full minute of silence passes before she opens her eyes and leans forward over the desk with her hands folded together in front of her face.

My dear Flea, I was under the impression that this kind of nuyen bought professionalism.  However, since you feel you lack in certain areas, the corporation has decided that we will provide whatever goods or services you require for a nominal price.  In our original time table, we provided 10 full hours from wheels down to wheels up.  In my calculations that would work out to about 150,000¥ per hour.  Since you have decided that you require more time to prepare, the corporation has agreed that we will delay the outgoing flight until you are ready.  For any hour or portion thereof in which the flight is delayed, we will reduce our payment by the appropriate amount.

She lowers her arms and leans forward while making no attempt to disguise a sneer full of contempt.

Please, take all the time you need to prepare.  This will not affect the return flight time.

Wow what a bitch.  This is why I wouldn't last a single day in the corporate world.

Cuco couldn't keep his mouth shut.

"I guess you're new at this whole Johnson thing.  Let me let you in a little secret... Shadowrunners don't punch a time card. We do piece work.  If we agreed to 1.5 mil, that's the deal.  Any problem that comes up with us leaving an hour later is time that we, as professionals, will have to make up in order to complete the mission.  You said it yourself, the price is non-negotiable."

Cuco stood up and turned to leave the room.

"I gotta get my stuff and I'll be coming right back to catch my flight.  If you'd rather not have me, you know how to reach me."

He stopped at the doorway and looked over his shoulder.

"... and as nice as my team seems to be, we all just met each other, so we're going to need that platinum credstick split four ways between us.  I'm not letting a stranger hold your good faith payment."

Never breaking eye contact with the elf, Flea rose to her feet, drew her gun and slammed it into the table, leaning forward menacingly.
I am not your "dear" anything you pointy eared russian bitch-whore! How dare you insult our professionalism?
The only one showing any amateruism here is you. 'Runners live and die by their kit, and here you are, trying to rush us onto a plane for a high risk-high reward mission with barely any more kit than we're stood in. Why?! You've had total control over the past 12+ hours of our lives so why the sudden rush?
I take it you either want us to die, get caught or do such a half-assed job that you don't have to pay us?
This whole thing stinks, so here's how it's going to be.
We will accept the job on these following terms:
We will give you the ten hours for 1.5million, because as you said, that is non-negotiable.
The ten hours will run from wheels down to wheels up as you specified, but that outbound flight will not take off until we're sat on that plane and that return flight will be changed to meet the ten hour window.
We will go into this job fully equipped, with an aim to complete the objective fully.
You will provide transport for us to achieve this and you will provide an advance of 25k each from the total payment sum to allow for this.
If you dont like it, we walk. You need us more than we need you

-- Everyone except Gustovness --

The elven woman's nostrils flare and her eyes go wild.  She stands up suddenly, violently throwing back the chair she was sitting on.  Her hands slam down on the desk as she begins to shout.

You dare take such an insolent tone with me?!  I could kill you all where you stand with nothing more than a frakking snap of my fingers!  I offer you ridiculous amounts of cold hard Nuyen and you think you can just throw it in my face and make more demands?!  When you are called to work for us it is an honor not to be taken lightly, Yama..---grrrk---

Her mouth twists to the side and half her face scrunches up like she just sucked on the world most sour lemon.  Unceremoniously, she drops lifelessly onto her desk.  You can smell burnt hair and barbeque.

A few moments pass while the three of you stare open mouthed,  exchanging glances between yourselves.  You soon hear a voice being broadcast from the woman's commlink.

The corporation wishes to apologize for the unprofessional behavior you have just witnessed.  There will be four limousines waiting for you outside to take you where ever you require.  Inside will be the full details of what we require from you.  If you decide you do not wish to participate after reviewing our requests, you may go where you please and our driver will take you but please speak to no one about what has transpired today.  If you find our terms agreeable, please inform our driver of what licences you will need and the corporation will ensure that all paperwork will be in order and available when you board the waiting aircraft.  You will still receive your full payment if you take extra time to arrive.  The aircraft is large enough to bring any equipment that you feel you require.  On behalf of the corporation, we thank you for your time.  1,000 nuyen has been deposited into each of your accounts and is yours whether you take the job or not.

When the man's voice stops, the commlink crackles, sputters, and dies with a small pillar of smoke.

-- Gustovness -

You notice the smell of a lovely barbeque wafting in the air from an indiscernible direction.

We'll all need to look pretty smart though and get a fresh set of ID off the drivers before we fly. I need to go sort out my bike and kit up, so keep in touch on this channel ok?//End//

The smell of burning hair and flesh caught at the back of her throat and the ruthlessness of what just happened was brutal. She was a bitch and a half but death was one hell of a punishment for that.
Realising just how deep she was in the shit, the prospect of finding out who these guys were outweighed the stench of burning flesh. Flea pushed the lifeless corpse back off the desk and onto the floor with a heavy thud.
The scene brought back gruesome memories of her service on the korean peninsula, the Korean Liberation Army had rushed her lightly armed signalling corps' position and nearly overrun them. The stench of this suited elf brought back the haunting image of a young Korean woman bent double over the LMG, the heat of the barrel cooking her now dead flesh as flea's comrades pushed the dead soldier back over the sandbags and reloaded.

Flea gagged at the memories mixed with the smell and began to search the dead elf for anything that betrayed her ID, position or employers.

As the brutal display of power silenced the team, Puppeteer’s blood turned to ice in his veins. The sudden death of the woman in front of them showed how much the corporation tolerated disloyalty. This didn’t bode well, despite the promise of clearer conditions and tasks. But the people on the other side at least showed some flexibility. This hinted at them being desperate, either because they didn’t have much time to look for other runners, or that they wanted this group particularly, for some obscure reason.
Still, his curiosity nagged him to take a look at the conditions. But first he had to make sure that the lost soul of the woman that died in front of him, didn’t take its leave in the wrong direction. He opened his eyes on the astral world again and started to murmur a prayer for the dead. Oh, Lord of the Great Unknown, extend thy hands and take yonder soul in thine embrace. Let her form meld into the Beyond, to form anew or take her rightful place on thine side, as thine Purpose demands. Warrior of old, grant her thy boon and be her guide to the Lord’s embrace, as once another was yours. With that, he let the spirit he summoned earlier go, to fulfill his role in the order of all things.

After he finished praying, he nodded to the others. I’m more inclined now to see what our prospective employer has in mind for us. Shall we? He also pulled his AR gloves on and started to type frantically on an invisible keyboard. //Matrix Message protocol 1.0.1c, compatibility mode// @team: >>I might play the part of a magical consultant, and I’m also not lost if it comes to negotiations. The new IDs are a good idea but I think those will be provided, as we have to be business partners to a specific target. It might be worth checking with the Reasonable-seeming Voice though. BTW I don’t have too much to pack, just have to go back and get my two helpers riding along. Oh, yes, and someone should check all the corporations that start with “Yama” on the market, that could afford this money for a single run. I’m not that good in sorting data, but it wouldn’t hurt to know more.<<

Cuco began to double back towards the room where the negotiations were taking place.

Holy shit, cranial bomb?

He couldn't help but laugh a little.

Guys, I'll be honest, I don't know what the hell we're going to need out there as far as ID's or whatever.  All I'm taking is my staff and my piece which our "security" can carry through checkpoints.  I'm heading out like this with my overcoat and steeple hat.  If you guys can think of anything else on the way that we might need, order it in for the rest of us.

Cuco was approaching the doorway.

What the hell is that smell?

I mean... it's hard to really know what we'll need before we get any more details about what we're supposed to be doing, right?

Cuco peeked into the room and saw the corpse on the floor, smoke still emanating from its skull.  He cracked a smile, looked at his companions and asked,

"Did I get her?"

"As for that... action figure... it is strange but it seems that it's one of my bound foci. I'm not sure how that came to happen, and why i should use you as a model for that. And it seems to have more connection to the Voodoo tradition... than mine..." The elf creased his forehead as he said the words. Your search of body doesn't turn up much.  Her pockets are empty except for the now melted commlink.  On her head you find a small wound oozing blood and brains from what was likely a cranial bomb.  Around her neck you find a silver necklace with a symbol on it that you don't recognize.

-- JDA & Gustovness --

You climb into the back of your respective limos and find that the corporation has spared no expense.  The seats are real, honest-to-god leather.  None of that synthetic stuff that everyone uses.  A chilled bottle of wine sits on ice on the wall and a long table runs down the middle for on-the-go business meetings.  A console on the side of the wall allows for the table to be retracted back into the floor.  You are unable to see the front of the vehicle because of a solid black privacy screen.  Every thing is black and expensive looking.  A small refrigerator holds various other drinks and some snacks as well.  Sitting on the table is a small chip which can be slotted into your commlink.  On it is written "Read Me".

-- JDA --

You push a button on the glowing console labelled "Intercom".  A pleasant sounding man with a slight Russian accent answers and you make your requests.

Yes ma'am, I will ensure that everything will be waiting for you when you arrive at the aircraft.  Where should I take you now?

-- Gustovness -

Flea is baffled by the iconography on the necklace, she takes a still image of it with the crappy built-in camera on her commlink and stuffs the necklace into her jacket pocket for safe keeping.
checking she had everything she came in with, Flea heads through the door and into the remaining Limo.

Chikuso, this is nice

Flea took her time opening the letter addressed to her that was sitting on the table. After a minute of careful consideration Flea pops the datachip into her commlink and digests every word before putting it back into the envelope and asking the driver to take her to the downtown parking lot where she left her bike.
Driver, i've been instructed to pass on any requests for the upcoming mission to yourself. I'm going to need a fresh SiN, a good one by the way, and a corporate security license for international firearm ownership and open carry. I'm going to need to pick up some suits en-route and could do with a few nuyen to cover them...

Puppeteer followed the others to the limousines and got in one. With a swift prayer he threw his usual caution in the wind and took a beer from the fridge - whatever treatment their host wanted to give them, it was already in their bodies. He told the driver the address, smiling slightly at the notion of an elite limo entering that neigbourhood. Although he had some vague ideas what he needed for the trip, he first took the chip and putting it into his commlink, checked its contents.

The crowd was going mental for the the crescendo of the song, the guitarist down on his knees, blasting out the final notes of the solo on his holo-'tar when Flea felt a tap-tap-tap on the shoulder, she spun around expecting it to be joey joining her in-sim, instead it was her system Icon pulsing red, indicating a failed task.
The Sim froze, the crowd in mid-air and Flea immediately dived back into her system node interface.

Message undeliverable? Oh fakku... there's no way that is just a co-incidence...
The hairs on the back of Flea's neck were stood on end and her mind racing with all the possibilities of what could have happened here. hopefully, Joey had just had his commlink stolen or it was rebooting.. unlikely, but a lot more palatable than the alternative.
Flea calls up a diagnostics terminal from her system node and initiates a remote-host-lookup for Joey's commcode, broadcasting a ping to his 'Trix address and requesting a response.
If his node was online, she'd get a response saying so regardless of whether he was logged in or not...

I hope these guys have filtered the comms at my end and not done anything to Joey, oh Shit, what have I done??

-- All --

You slot the chip into your commlink and a soothing corporate teamwork melody wafts through the air.  A pleasant looking woman appears on your screen and starts to narrate in a tone that sounds just a little too upbeat.

Hello and let me be the first to welcome to our growing family of corporate contractors.  The corporation wishes to thank you for helping out with our latest project.  As an integral part of the corporation, you can rest easy knowing that your actions today will benefit us all in the future.  Included in this contractor's packet, you will find your specific goals as outlined by your designated corporate liaison.  Contact information is also included on this chip should you need to get a hold of your liaison for any reason.  Remember, together we can all build a brighter tomorrow.

The melody turns to an upbeat instrumental pop beat while the image becomes obscured by various brightly colored shapes.  After a few moments the sound and images fade and are replaced by the male voice you heard earlier.

You will arrive in Miami aboard our jet posing as potential investors from the Shiawase Corporation.  You will be provided with corroborative identification and the jet will be decorated with the corporate logos.  You will feign interest in a possible buy out of a minor research division from Renraku.  In recent years Renraku has shown an increasing interest in the biotechnology field but has recently decided to sell off its assets and discontinue further investment.

After clearing customs in Miami, the jet will continue to Paradise Island in the former Bahamas.  The Renraku representative will meet you at the private airport where you will be presented with investor packets.  We expect a tour to be scheduled for the following day.  You will use the packet to locate the research building.  Once you have located the building, you are to notify me with its location then proceed to enter and destroy everything you can reach.  Make it look like you are attempting to kill every last person to protect your identities but you must let some live as witnesses to describe what happened.  Do not let them suspect that you let them go freely.  It is preferable that you do this during a shift change to cause as much collateral damage as possible.  Make noise and get noticed, be sure to wear your Shiawase ID tags.  Bring as much attention upon yourselves as possible but do NOT under any circumstances enter the nano-machine workshop located on the same grounds.  If you need to contact me, my information has been included with this chip.  Memorize it, this chip will be rendered disabled within 5 minutes of being activated.

The beer has a slightly odd taste to it.  It must be some sort of microbrew.  It's not bad.  It's not good either.

In short order, you manage to get to the places that you have requested to be taken to.  The voice over the intercom informs you that the car will be waiting in the same spot when you return to return to the airport.

The pulsing system icon returned to green and VR terminal opened to display the incoming message from Joey. Flea's pulse instantly dropped by 30bpm and she breathed a huge sigh of relief.
A second terminal opens to confirm her order is ready for collection "would you like any optional extra's on that suit?" flea checked the box next to the concealable holster for both suits.

//Matrix Message protocol 1.0.2b//Joey, you had me going there for a minute! When I get back i'll buy you a new commlink, a bloody good one. that old thing must be a couple of years old now?!
think i'm going to take the job, I'll be away for a couple of days so will need some kit. Have you got a laser sight or external smartgun (rail mount) and any APDS in stock at the mo?  I've got cred, so it won't be going on the tab ;¬D i could also do with something that goes bang, so if you've got any thermite or anything like that, i'd be interested.
I'm heading over your way shortly if you have time for a swift soycaf before I go? Also, do you have any trusted buddies in the carib league? It would be good to have a name if this job goes south//End Message//

Driver, thanks for that. I need to go sort out a few bits and get hold of some kit before we go, are you ok to wait here for a minute? Actually, while we're waiting. is there any chance "the corporation" can get hold of an "Executive Protector"?, its an SMG built into a briefcase, it'll be a lot more subtle than my usual set-up.
Flea climbs out of the Limo and heads over to the suit shop, drawing a few looks from the passing foot-traffic as she is clearly not wearing typical business exec clothing. Crossing the street, she heads into the store and collects the suits.
is 225 nuyen per suit enough to cover clothing (business quality, non armoured, and the concealable holster)? its basically more expensive clothing that allows us to blend in, rather than getting the Synergist line suit that is fully armoured and costs a fortune for example.
Flea hangs the suits on the roof rail and gives the driver her address; Driver, i need to sort out a few things so i'll meet you back at my home address in a short while. that'll be the last stop before we head back to the airport. thanks very much!

Checking it is safe to cross, flea heads over the road to the newly built multi-story carpark, feeling the weak sun breaking through the clouds and warming her slightly. It actually wasn't a bad day today, and the sun was a welcome reprieve from the metal prison she thought she wouldn't escape from. Deciding against the lift, flea took off her gecko kit and stuffed it into her satchel bag, deployed her helmet visor and called up the datachip feed
for the last time, memorising the commcode.
Ok, so fly to the Renraku facility, destroy it. make it look like Shiawase did it. seems simple enough, except for a few little things. That Renraku marking inside the drone seems a little out of place for a firm that is launching an attack on Renraku. We're still none the wiser as to who we're even working for here... Could this be a green-on-green? But who would benefit from that? The russian sounded like she was going to spill the beans and thats why they popped her...Renraku stopping investment in biosciences? selling assets? I Wonder if that had anything to do with dad's project..This is going to be a really messy job, but I've got to get into that facility and see what I can find...
Flea checked around to make sure she was out of line of sight of the limo, and reached into her jacket pocket, pulling out the necklace she took from the Elf and studied it hard, now that she felt safe to do so. Any engraving or hallmark might just be enough to get a glimmer of who she was or who she worked for....

Flea hammered up the stairs, reaching the sixth floor and spotted her bike exactly where she left it.
She connected to the bike, called up a diagnostics terminal and investigated it's device logs to see if it had been activated or tampered with since she'd last ridden it here and gave it a thorough visual inspection.

Cuco looked around his room, triple checking to make sure he didn't leave anything behind.

I don't like that we're showing our faces to the Renraku.

That's because this whole thing stinks.  You're like a horse with blinders on following that million and half nuyen carrot.

Cuco sat down on the edge of his bed.  He let out a sigh.

This will mean war with the Renraku.  There will be nowhere to hide.  I'll have to spend the rest of my life running away from them.

Or fighting them... There are plenty of jobs against the Renraku at any given time.  What better enemy to make now?  It's not like you have anything to lose except your skin.

Easy for you to say, you have nothing to lose at all.

Trickster threw an arm around Cuco's mannequin in the center of the room that he used for target practice, charred with burns and tattered.

Worse comes to worse, they'll come looking for you and Ashy here will get tortured.  You wouldn't squeal on us though, would you Ashy?

Cuco stood up and paced around the room, hands on his hips, paced back and forth, and occasionally stopped to twirl his mustache.  He looked at his surroundings... at the dive that he lived in.

He drew in another deep sigh.

I guess I should start growing up.

Trickster jumped in front of Cuco with an angry look on his face.

And what the hell is that supposed to mean?

Cuco shook his head and gave his mentor spirit a reassuring grin.

Don't worry, we won't stop having fun... it's just time to raise the stakes is all.

Cuco brought up a matrix search for shops between his place and the airport where a corporate mage might get his threads.
I'm guessing this is such common knowledge it doesn't warrant a roll.
He threw a duffle bag with his ammo box into the limo and passed the address along to the driver.  As they rolled away from his apartment, he patted himself down to reassure himself that he had equipped his pistol and holster, armor vest, and virtually anything of value that he might need that he already owned on himself.  He ran his fingers along the brim of his brown steeple hat and sat back.
I'm willing to drop up to 1k on a bad ass corp mage suit, preferably something along the lines of a dark brown jacket with a sage green long sleeved dress shirt underneath and a matching dark brown tie and matching slacks with black dress shoes brown laces.  My steeple hat will be worn with this suit.

In case someone is wondering wtf I'm talking about with my hat, it looks like this but brown: https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRkvGTh8L20ZOPAxsymUCKr5Gp3RdHYw31xA9l3dAHo4i1IgWa3TQ
The necklace is very ornate.  The pendant is egg shaped with intricate metalwork and precious stones.  You do a quick image search on the matrix and find that this is possibly a small Fabergé egg.

Your bike appears to have not been tampered with and is in the same condition as you left it.

-- Gustovness --

Your matrix search turned up several shops along the route but none with what you were looking for.  However you did find one in the downtown area.  You recognize the name of the store as an upscale and ludicrously expensive place but also very posh.  A quick browse through their current inventory shows you a suit that almost perfectly matches what you are looking for except the shirts are silk and the jacket is made of real leather.  The ensemble pushes your budget just a bit at 1250.  Accounting for traffic, it will also add 30 minutes to your drive in each direction.

While scanning through your results you notice your mustache is astonishingly smooth and has an almost silky wet texture to it.  It's not actually wet, just so smooth that it feels that way.

Faberge egg eh, nice. Flea makes a to-do note in her commlink AR feed to "find appraiser on return"

//Matrix Message protocol 1.0.2b// Cuco, got us some threads. you ok with 225NY? specced it with a holster for a piece if you're carrying. no plates in it to keep it cheap, but will at least make us look the part.//End Message//

The bike looked absolutely fine, there was nothing out of place at all and the logs checked out ok too. Flea deployed her visor, synced up its AR feed to the bike and gave the mental command to start the engine.
The mirage purred as Flea eased the throttle open, testing the brakes a couple of times and shifting the engine diagnostics readout into the bottom right of her AR feed. She just didn't trust that her baby hadnt been touched in some way and took some convincing that it was safe to ride.
Gridguide debited her account for the parking and Flea descended the 6 floors of ramps and headed out onto the open road, wondering about the message she'd just received back from Joey. "No help from me, I'm under the gun"... He's a bloody weapons dealer, why would he suddenly not deal weapons?? he must have had an instruction from this lot not to assist...
Right then, better get moving!
Flea opened the throttle and joined the main flow of traffic, heading away from downtown and towards her home. She was going to need some supplies, but it was now a choice of heading to the barren's weapon markets or putting some rounds on her fake SiN the legit way to save time and possible drama with the resident go-gangers.
Feeling time was of the essence, Flea decided against the markets, that will be my last resort..
She instead instructed gridguide to plot her a route to the nearest branch of Dick's hunting and sporting goods stores.

The agent's search results were very interesting indeed, two of them definitely warranted further investigation.
Pulling up to a set of red lights, Flea took the opportunity to issue the agent a new command:

Puppeteer read the instructions on the chip with a gradually darkening face. Then he read it again. The third time still didn't help him understand, what in the high heavens was worth one and a half million in the enclosed instructions. Something smelled fishy, and increasingly rotten by the minute. He then sent a message to the rest of the team... knowing no better label for their ragtag group of miscreants.

>>Guys, you reading this? This is a complete mess. Do they really expect us to enter and destroy even a faraway division of a AAA-rated corporation? No offense, but neither of us showed the amount of professionalism that a job of this magnitude requires. Where's our firepower? Where's our matrix support? I'm a decent shot at short-range magical surveillance but that's like a sail against a hurricane. We will be blown away in seconds. This is all beside the notion of the job being about killing possibly dozens of innocent people, with the only seeming reason being wanton destruction. I'm seriously considering opting out of this one and suggest you do the same.

//Matrix Quick Reply 1.0.2b//You're not wrong. I can bring some firepower but my experience is in signals, not heavy weapons. My contacts have gone quiet too, I'm wondering whether our "employers" influenced that. With proper planning and equipment I think we could pull off a lightning raid to disrupt the facility, but we'd need to be in very quickly and out very quickly before their response teams could arrive. A fire or gas explosion could serve as a distraction to buy us time, but we've got a lot of waiting around to do for the flight afterwards. My biggest concern is that we go in there and they're waiting for us. I get the idea we're just being toyed with here, there isn't enough information yet. The whole thing about "not entering the nano-fabrication plant" is the biggest question mark. are they trying to protect it if it is an inside job, or are they trying to acquire it for cheap afterwards? If they wanted to sink their competitor they'd just have us blow it sky-high//

Yama - Japanese A rated corporation, established 2023.

  Minor fields include:

In recent years, Yama has made several attempts to gain extraterritoriality to no avail.  If successful, this would be the last piece of a large corporate puzzle which could push them into an AA rating.  Major concerns to the Corporate court include Yama's lack of diversity as well as focusing on areas already saturated with much research from other, larger corporations.  The current CEO, Walter Sun, believes that Yama has more to offer than the competition but feels that the corporation is not getting its voice heard over the noise caused by the numerous competitors... Yamatetsu, the well known Russian AAA corporation, has announced at a private stock holder's meeting that they intend to expand current operations in the nanotechnology research sector.  Although Yamatetsu already has a minor division devoted to this, the company has decided to invest several million nuyen into expansion.  Stock prices initially dropped slightly after this news was leaked into the public domain but quickly recovered after promises were made about significant advances already in position to be released in the next quarter.  No one knows what these advances are and no one has come forward claiming to have seen them either but senior Yamatetsu assured their stock holders that they will not be disappointed.

The bookie gladly accepts your bet.  The odds are a bit long at 1/25 but you've got a really good feeling about it this time.

Sorry ma'am, comes the voice over the intercom, I'm not permitted to engage in small talk.  Do you have any further requests?

-- Ren --

The car pulls up to its destination and comes to a stop.  As you tell the driver to not wait for you, you hear the distinct "click" of car doors locking.  You try the doors and sure enough, they don't budge.  The car then pulls away smoothly to an unknown destination.  You try several different strategies to exit the vehicle but each fails just as miserably as the last.  It soon becomes apparent that this luxury limo was designed as a gilded cage.  You feel a cold and ghostly hand rest on your shoulder and you instinctively know it to be your mentor spirit.  He speaks slowly with a somber voice that only you can hear.

This place is filled with strife and anger.  Even death is reluctant to come here, you must escape.  Trust your new compatriots and stay close to them.  Even then, do not deviate from the truth of your beliefs, your role is yet to be played and only you know how to help the sisters.

As the haunting voice reverberates in your head, you hear the engine of the car start to cough and sputter.  The limo grinds to a stop and you can hear all the electrics power down.  The windows lose their black tint and become completely clear, the doors unlock, and without the power to hold it up, the privacy divider sags slightly.  Outside, you can see that you haven't gone far from Pallyup and that you are now in a wide expanse of the barrens that you don't recognize.  You don't hear any sounds.  No birds, no traffic, not even any wind.  The sparse vegetation shows no sign of life.  You instantly feel like this is a place where you don't belong.  Not yet anyway.  You get the feeling that this was not the intended destination for the car and that in some strange way, you were protected by being brought here.

//What? no, I've been working for you for ages, even starting to think of you as friend rather than my boss. It just seems very odd that you don't want my business today? and how the hell did you get that, it was a thought, not a message?! I'm at Dick's sporting and hunting shop now as I'm pushed for time. Are you ok? Lv k x//

Flea rides up and secures her bike, dashing into the shop.
She walks over to a holo-terminal and begins to peruse through the goods, selecting one full SMG clip's (50 rounds for praetor) worth of Stick n Shock (405NY with clip), Laser sight (100NY), imaging scope with lowlight and vision mag (500) and a top up of 20 regular rounds for her machine pistol (20NY)

Flea stashes her purchases in the storage compartment under the seat, hops on and guns it to get home, swinging by the local stuffer shack en route to pick up a baseball cap and two bottles of wash-in-wash-out hair colour (auburn + blonde)
The limo had easily beaten her and was waiting in the visitor's parking bay next to the access lift in the underground car park. Flea parks her bike up in her spot, flashes the driver a wave and a gesture to let him know she'd be 2 minutes, and heads up to her room to grab her kit.
She dons her FFBA, grabs her 'work' 'link, sets wireless to "off" and enables skinlink, stuffing it into an inside pocket of her FFBA.
Flea pops up the loose floorboard in the bedroom and digs out the rest of her kit, sorting through what she will need for this run.
She clips the laser sight under the crusader's barrel and attaches her new scope along it's top rail. She tops up the magazine with her newly procured loose rounds and tests the loading mechanism a few times to check it's all a good fit before stuffing it into the concealable holster in her FFBA, and puts her gecko kit into the other pockets. Her knife is stored in her right leg compartment.
Realising she left the suits in the limo, she puts on her clothing over the top of her suit, setting the color to be different from this morning's attire.
Flea sets the soycaf machine running while she dies her hair auburn, sipping the steaming brew as her hair dries.

Flea grabs her backpack and attaches the praetor to the inside harness, puts both her grenades, a survival kit, her helmet, both jammers, tool kit, sequencer and autopicker into the main section.
Her microdrone and spare clips go into one side pocket along with her 'work' glasses. Into the other pocket goes the tag eraser, glass cutter and wire clippers. In the zip pocket inside go her loose rubber rounds.

As a precaution, flea runs the tag eraser over the faberge egg several times and stashes it back into the hidy-hole, making sure to cover it well.
Basically, taking everything but the grapple gun, rope and climbing harnesses.
Locking the door, Flea puts on the baseball cap, heads to the lift and with a deep breath and sense of nervousness climbs in and says to the driver,"I'm ready".
I can't believe I'm stupid enough to have taken this job..
"driver, how is my request for the mapsoft and linguasoft coming on? also, this large bag I have will need to be smuggled. The datachip informed me that you would be able to arrange that?

Resting back in the comfy seats, Flea helped herself to a sandwich from the minibar and another orange juice. Seeing the results from the Agent lifted her spirits slightly, at least she might figure out who they were working for..
Flea took the time to read each of the reports, word for word, feeling a little better for some proper food and drink inside her.

Puppeteer knew this wasn’t the time to ponder. It was the time to act, as the Ruler of the Great Unknown just told him. Later, he would give his thanks in the proper form but now he moved with a purpose. Before the driver, who probably couldn’t decide what just happened, could react, he got out of the car, while opening his consciousness to realms afar.
