While this book is scheduled to hit the streets July 08, a review is up on Diehard GameFAN:

Looks like Rusty has hit one out of the park...well done!! Now looking forward to finding the time to read my copy ;D

Please tell me it's not another Vampire book.... been way to skewed to Infected centered stories in the fiction so far. I want Dragons & Elves with guns.

The main character, James Kincaid (an elven PI), is from the novella, Neat (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/107953/Shadowrun-Novella-Neat).

There have been exactly two Infected-centric novellas and one Infected-centric novel. I think a goblin shows up in Frost & Fire, but I'd hardly call things "Infected centered" in the fiction, all told.

That said...Jimmy Kincaid is an elf with a gun.

Yet.

That said, if you want a dragon (well, dracoform) with a gun, you can always go read the Dragonheart Saga.

Yeah, but as much as I enjoyed the trilogy, Ryan Mercury is one of my least favourite characters ever.  Far too overpowered for my liking.

Sweet! I'm just finishing catching up on the fiction; I finished the latest novel just a bit ago, and all I have left is Docwagon 19, which I'll have done a bit later. Glad to see I will have another book to read. So far I'm loving the stories.

I'm trying to get Red Rain, the third Thomas McAllister story, hammered into shape but real life has delayed it. I've got a short story, "Thunderstruck," coming out Real Soon Now in the upcoming anthology A World of Shadows. There are a couple more things in the works that I'm not quite comfy talking about yet.

So yeah. Not as soon as I'd like, but yeah.

My copy should be arriving tomorrow. I had to special order it, as the closest B&N store hadn't been scheduled to receive any copies. It's a bit weird though, as they did have a copy of Borrowed Time Available in the store. I will probably start reading it Wednesday night, and have it finished Thursday or Friday at the latest.

Just finished after 6+ hours of solid reading.

Anyone who has any concerns about the quality of current Shadowrun fiction can put those fears to rest.  It was a brilliant read, with great characterisation and wonderfully descriptive.  At times I could almost hear a saxophone playing softly in the background as Jimmy Kincaid, P.I. reviewed a situation through his optic filters.

The problem with some novels is that minor characters can come across as two-dimensional stereotypes, but that doesn't happen here.  I really want to go into details but will not go into spoilers.

Okay.  Just one spoiler.  Critias hit the nail on the head with the description of Sterling, both in looks and deeds.  Sterling is a badass!

One quick question for the author; is WhiteBrite Betel gumTM as addictive as the normal type of Betel gum that stains your teeth?
Title: Re: SR Fiction - Shaken: No Job Too Small
Post by: Critias on <07-13-15/1248:48>
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it, Sterling, and thanks for the comments.  Spoiler-free (or mostly ;) ) comments are always welcome, I dig feedback, y'all know that.  Feel free to toss up reviews and stuff where ever you bought it, too, dudes and dudettes!

And yeah, WhiteBrite is his favorite brand of Betel gum;  every bit as addictive, does the normal Betel stuff as far as in-game effects, but is also crazy minty and tooth-whitening (because by the 2070s the technology is there to make some things APPEAR fine and healthy, even if they're not).

It's a novel, not a book from the enhanced fiction line, sorry.

I've got stats for Kincaid and his supporting characters all locked down in my head (well, locked down but changing as the stories do), but I haven't done anything for the e-fiction guys, so I have yet to publish that particular mixture of fluff and crunch.

I started reading this yesterday afternoon after I got it off of Amazon and did not want to put it down for anything. The thing I love most about this book is that all the characters were treated like real people with real reasons to do what they did and act the way they did. There was plenty of Sixth World background and flavor, another plus in my opinion. Very much a great hard boiled detective story, too. All in all a great "Shadowrun" novel and great detective story as well.

So, how soon will the next book be out . . .   I'm ready for more . . .  :)

Glad you enjoyed it!  One of the toughest parts of writing for Kincaid is trying to balance all that, and it's great to hear it hit the spot for you.  Feel free to post a review somewhere!  Additional feedback's always welcome.

Another thing I liked about the book was that the protagonist did not seem to have too much plot armor. It was always documented why he made it through, yet still he almost bled out a few times. Those are the kind of heroes you want to read about, the bloodied, the scarred, the relentless. Not those who reflect Thor shots with their chrome eyebrow.
Kincaid is close to reaching Dirk Montgomery levels here!
...
Aside from Neat are there other works featuring him?

I snuck Jimmy into some intro fics a few times -- Twilight Horizon shows him going on a little trip outside of Seattle, and Dirty Tricks has him in an early "crossover" with a group I wrote about elsewhere (Frostbyte, Saber, and their crew), at a particularly violent political gathering.

Way ahead of you on the review. I posted on Amazon and did some FB linking. I doubt seriously my efforts will be enough to drive it to the top of the best sellers list but I like letting people know about the good things I read and this was definitely one of the good ones!

TWO MORE NOVELS!!!

Wow.  What are you doing on the forums?  Get writing, man!

Need Jimmy Kincaid stories NOW!

In all seriousness this is brilliant news.  It's great to see that CGL is so committed to its fiction line, and the quality just keeps getting better.

Just finished it last night.
Fun read and very much liked the ending ;-)

My only question is what are the stats for Adversary?
Title: Re: SR Fiction - Shaken: No Job Too Small
Post by: Sterling on <07-20-15/1327:03>
The 4th Ed book Street Magic had the details of Adversary as a Mentor Spirit:

Quote
Adversary
Wherever there is a cosmological order, there is an entity who wishes to overthrow it. Adversary is the original rebel working to thwart the mythical Powers-That-Be. Whether he acts out because of his own selfishness or because he is helping those less privileged, free will and cynicism are his trademarks and tools. In some Judeo-Christian traditions, Adversary is the fallen angel who has spurned God’s will, while some North American and Asian shamanic traditions see Adversary as a trickster figure and manipulator who brings change.

Advantages: +2 dice for Manipulation spells, +2 dice to either Counterspelling or Banishing Tests (player must choose one).

Disadvantages: Adversary magicians have issues with authority. If the Adversary magician is given orders or instructions which do not match his own desires and intentions, he must make a Willpower + Charisma (3) Test or refuse the order, going with his own decision instead, regardless of the consequences.

Just needs an Adept bonus to make it comply with 5th Ed.  Hope this, and many other Mentor Spirits, make a comeback soon.

Post by: adzling on <07-20-15/1357:22>
Thanks Sterling, I wonder what benefits it would convey to an Adept?!

Perhaps enhanced Willpower or Resistance to magic?

Glad you enjoyed it, Adzling.

I've been thinking about maybe trying to sneak Adversary's stats (and a few other goodies, I dunno) into some Kincaid "enhanced fiction."  Just gotta try and work out a schedule, see about what word count that line developer would want, figure out how I could wedge that story in with the timeline I'm working on for some other Kincaid stuff, yadda yadda yadda.  I dunno.  Time'll tell.

I really like Jimmy because he's the definition of a gritty protagonist / anti-hero who's internal compass seems pretty consistent (i.e. his motivations are not jerked around randomly by the storyline).

When do we see his character sheet?!

I think an enhanced fiction novella with his sheet, Ariana's (sp.?) sheet & Skip and Trace's sheets & Adversary's stats would be awesome.

I absolutely loved the book! Jimmy's relationships with his ally spirit (I really want one on my next mage now), contacts, and even mentor spirit were terrific! I'm looking forward to seeing Jimmy again, and would happily buy enhanced fiction to get some stats.

Thanks for the feedback, fellas!  As always, I like hearing from folks about what they liked, didn't like, etc.  Like I said, the enhanced fiction thing's just a rough idea right now, I've got a lot of other stuff on my plate, but I'll likely chat up the right people at GenCon next week.

Yeah I wanna see some stats on that fancy 'ware he's packing.
One thing I haven't seen anywhere in Srun (but is implied by this book) is that software can add functionality to things like your cybereyes, ears etc.
This is a neat idea that I think should be made more of.
I could see Sideways as a software package that requires cybereyes, ears and and Attention Coprocessor and in return can do the things Jimmy's ware does in the book (provide a bonus to read intentions by checking their heartrate and pupil dilation etc).

Seconded on stats of Adversary, Sideways and just general information and numbers about the characters

Sideways, btw, isn't software or hardware.  It's a real thing, statted up, it's just not statted up for SR5 yet.  Check Augmentation, p. 94.  ;)

Finally found the time to read Shaken. It was a very cool read, one of the best, if not the best, of the new bunch of SR novels.

On the down side, after reading Crimson and the Thomas McAllister Mysteries I was a little bit disappointed that it was essentially
another Vampire tale
but I guess that part of Kincaid's backstory had to have some resolution. Also, I might be a bit too genre-savvy when it comes to detective stories, but I have to admit
I had guessed who the real baddie was almost immediately.
Not that it prevented me from thoroughly enjoying the ride and the writing, hard-boiled in all the right ways :)

I'll write a more detailed review for my website soon. [edit: aaaaand here it is (http://fondationdraco.fr/2016/01/27/shaken-no-job-too-small-russell-zimmerman/) :) The original is in French, but Google Trad might help. Somewhat (https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Ffondationdraco.fr%2F2016%2F01%2F27%2Fshaken-no-job-too-small-russell-zimmerman%2F&edit-text=&act=url).]

All in all, I hope Jimmy Kincaid will return sooner rather than later :)
