Title: [5e] Shaking Down Shadows Master Thread: Month 2
Post by: Jayde Moon on <10-21-15/1722:25>
Quote
The level of encryption on this thing boggled the mind.  The file itself was huge and protected in multiple layers.  To make matters more... interesting... it was as if the protections were made with shadowrunners in mind.  Of course they were, but not in the way most spiders thought.  Her peers played in the same hosts and visited the same matrix cafes.  Sure some assholes were proprietary, but a lot of what the community knew, they shared.  Cutting edge stuff from brilliant minds.

But this?  This was already protected from some of the latest hacking tools to breeze through Needle Net.  Specialized protections layered over standard fare.  It was absolutely fascinating.  And certainly dangerous.  The Saint had truly delivered a rubik's' cube to keep her occupied for days.  If I can do it at all, let's be honest here!

But besides the challenge, the Saint had dropped enough cred into her account to keep her honest for a few months, so she set to it with double the enthusiasm.  She idly wondered what had brought the Saint back into the game.  He'd always been a good payday and then, poof, he was gone.  She quickly tossed the thought from her mind.  What matter?  He was back and he was paying.  Back to work.

Hello, again!  Back in May, I initially opened up recruitment for Shaking Down Shadows, which is a relatively ambitious play-by-post project.  The idea is that players will be taking on the roles of Shadowrunners operating in Seattle in 2075 and the story will take place over the course of a year, in game.  There is no limit to how many players take part in the overall metaplot, their characters will form the pool from which various Mr. Johnsons will hire their talent.  Each individual thread will consist of 4-6 Shadowrunners.  Each 'month' of in game time will see it's own separate set of missions, which will all lead to the final month.  We just finished up three separate runs for the first month and I am about to get into running the second month.

Besides the threads that will be running here, I am putting a lot of information onto an Obsidian Portal Webpage:

Shaking Down Shadows (https://shaking-the-shadows.obsidianportal.com)

This is a hub for both IC information and OOC information and an outlet for creative activities beyond the scope of the forums here.

Anyone interested in joining should set up an account on Obsidian Portal if they do not already have one.  They should then note their desire to play as well as their Obsidian Portal Account name as a response to this thread.

Character creation and expectations can be found here (https://shaking-the-shadows.obsidianportal.com/wikis/player-guide).

There are several ready made contacts located in the Characters section, many of them are canon characters from the first and fourth Missions seasons.  There is a small incentive for taking those contacts over making your own, while fleshing out your own contacts can earn small amounts of Karma.

In addition to the individual runs, there will be a running Bulletin Board (think JackPoint or Virtual Underworld) where characters can post as well as various NPCs.

The second month runs will start on 8 November, 2015.  I ill have as many separate games as there are players playing in them.  In that time, we have plenty of opportunity to get characters made, answer any questions, or whatever.

Please respond here with your intention to play.  If you were a player in Month 1 and would like to continue, please also post here your intent to stay with the campaign.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing some new folks for the second month!

I would be interested in joining for month 2.

Looking at Obsidian Portal, to create an account it seemed to require creating a new campaign?  I spent a bit of time looking around but didn't find a way to just make a stand-alone account?

So for now I've created an account with a dummy campaign, but not sure if that is correct.  Created the account using a google log-in: brx1et at gmail.  Happy to create a new account in a better way for this purpose, if there is one.

And having poked around the information on on the game site, I have to say that I adore the amount of player writing you are inviting :)   (ET: also like the use of Saint James, connecting to the first season of Missions, nice weaving together of threads)

Very odd that it forced you to make a campaign.  On the plus side, you have a campaign you can work on :P

I had sent an invitation for you to join the portal.

Thanks!

I'm happy with a regular build or street level build (you had mentioned the latter -- was there enough characters of that type for a group?)

And do you have a timeline for wanting new characters submitted?  (Shouldn't take horribly long, but I always have way too many character ideas -- having a timeline will make sure I settle on one in time for you to do what you need.)  Also, any concepts/types you are feeling at all overloaded on?  Given a lot of options, I'm happy to avoid giving you any additional headaches.

Interested in joining.

Thinking a former Lone Star officer who was betrayed and "killed" by his former partner. Took to the streets & running to pay the bills and get a little bit of payback.

Street Characters are for story/challenge purposes.  There won't necessarily be a street level run.  Mostly just a chance to tell a story from a street level who gets involved in the politics of shadow running.

Having a bit of PC problems but I am interested!

My character once made will be a very young inexperienced dwarven decker with an attachment to pennies. It will be kind of sad, really hilarious, and completely fun! Name: Tasda Barrelsmasher Hackername: Pennies Logo: An old American penny but instead of Abraham Lincoln on it, it is a Nuyen symbol and instead of US architecture it is a symbol of the UCAS.

Currently would like to see over 20 players before I want to add another prime runner, so for now, it's standard, chummer!

You can post your description and bio fluff onto the Portal, however I have a specific way I want to have the crunch displayed, so you can put your character information here or PM it to me or email at:

jaydemoon@gmail.com

I'll take any easily readable format.

Might be interested in doing a Street Level character, perhaps someone trying to stick their nose into events. (and yes, I know that might get it cut off. ;D )

Obsidian Portal name: ScytheKnight

Post by: ScytheKnight on <10-27-15/0550:51>
Well, it seems I'm once again playing an Albino hacker ::) . This time around a street level Otaku to Technomancer who has added some very basic cyberears/eyes to the datajack so she can record everything going on around her, as well as information she digs up... and sell it to try and make ends meet (Electronic Witness + Day Job 1).

Was looking at a character who gets caught up in all this dreck rather than a baby runner.

I could supply either an Open Office spreadsheet with all the workings out, or a Google-Sheet with all the totals and calculations (or both!) depending on what you want to take a look at.

Would love to give this a go. My portal name is also stoneglobe. Am working on a couple of character concepts at the minute and will send you through the finished character asap.

Have my combat medic / sniper adept all created, will upload tomorrow (pc crashed as I was trying earlier).

How should I format? I can share chummer file, pdf, or some other type if desired.

Not familiar with the Obsidian Portal deal so could use some help with that.

Post by: ScytheKnight on <10-27-15/1711:17>
Ahhh damn... that's a problem. On re-reading Day Job quality (Run Faster P154) looks like I need SINner or a Rating 4 Fake SIN for a job, even if said 'Job' is selling data from Electronic Witness it seems... an issue for a Technomancer trying to live off the grid.

Was planning on that being something interesting to do with some of the Essence left over from getting a Datajack for Otaku to Technomancer... but at Street Level there's no way I could afford a R4 SIN.

Looks like I may be back to the drawing board.

Jayde Moon -- I'd been working on trying to making an aspected summoner work (as seen in this thread: http://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?topic=22362.0), but have been pretty much persuaded to go mystic adept and just ignore sorcery (or possibly take incompetent in the skill group--still trying to decide).  Just wanted to check one thing before I finish up:

RAW, as I understand it, is that if mystic adepts don't buy as many PP as they have magic at character creation, there is no way for them to close that gap later (they may initiate and take a PP of course, but if they have magic six and only buy 4 PP, for example, they can't later just buy those two PP at any cost).  Just checking my interpretation, and checking for any house rules around that.  (I'm not overly fussed either way, but it does change some character creation priorities.... take a few skills at 1 now with karma, or take another PP and buy those skills in game).

While I'm checking, mysads get some starting spells, those can be in ritual magic or alchemy as well as normal spells, correct?  (I really don't have the skill points for those areas, but could take one, stash the free spells, and maybe grow into it later).

ETA: still not 100% I'm going with that character.  Also looking at a dwarf who was a Cross Applied Technologies sleeper agent, and has finally accepted that the Seraphim truly are gone and aren't ever going to activate him.  Probably an adept, although possibly subtle 'ware instead-- still working both builds to see how well I can get the effect I'm looking for.  Intend to choose in the next day or so and send a character sheet and work on some background fiction.

Actually I questioned whether I should submit the technomancer concept I'd worked on for a couple of days after I saw that ScytheKnight had submitted one. I don't know that our gutter dwellers can compare to Lady Marisart, we'd be like a fish out of water in her circles.

I had the same thought (barring that mine was "adept" and "RavensOracle."  But high level concept can work out so differently on the ground, AND we don't know how characters will end up being grouped up.

Beta is right.  Don't get too wrapped around the 'fit the team' axle.  The idea of the campaign is that it's "life in the Shadows" for a year (with a unifying metaplot).  So the Fixers will deliver the right teams to their Johnsons from the available pools.

I've decided on an elven summoning/mystic-adept who goes by the handle of "Forty."  (technically she can cast spells, she just never learned how).  It turns out that "life imprisonment" for elves gets really expensive, so after forty-two years they finally kicked her out of prison, whether or not anyone thought she was safe to have mingling with the public .

She may not be very well adjusted, but hopefully she'll be fun  ;D

Title: Re: [5e] Shaking Down Shadows Recruitment: Month 2
Post by: Jayde Moon on <10-30-15/2125:31>
Tere is not a limit on the stories you write, but there is a limit on how much karma you can earn for them (3 per game month).  This keeps folks from 'gaming the system' as it were and gives everyone a sort of even chance to earn Karma.

Generally from writing stories you can get up to 6 karma, from the short story and then writing up your Milk Run.  The former can be any story you want, as long as it kind of gives us insight into your character or frames something your character is doing.  The Milk Run story has to be about something you were hired to do.

I have a concept worked up for a Troll street samurai, what format should it be sent in, and where should I send it?  I usually use chummer5, but if you need a pdf or other file type I can probably get it done.  I apologize if I missed any of this information if it was posted earlier in the thread or on the OP page.

Good catch, MM.  Added Mother to the roster.

So I'm closing recruitment today, I have to give myself the week to get everyone's characters posted on the Portal and then make sure I have solid adventures for the various teams.  If anyone really really really wants to still get in on month 2 and just can't wait for month 3, please send me a PM and we can discuss it.

If you are on the list then you are in, whether you have given me a character yet or not, but let's get those characters to me ASAP.

You already have a character from back when month 1 was going to start and you determined you wouldn't have the bandwidth to take it on and bowed out.

Month three probably won't start till late winter early spring.

A touch of IRL corporate excitement today, as lunch was taken up by an all-hands to announce our CEO is moving to "a more focused role" and a new CEO is coming in, and how wonderful this is, and how happy everyone is about it.

Like any Shadowrun player I immediately began to wonder what is REALLY going on, :P.

Anyway, really posting to ask about where we send character sheets?  I am probably being obtuse, but did not find an email link anywhere?  Or do we just upload them to the portal?

I am interested in joining in on Month 2 as a new player, if you are still recruiting.  I have a sum to ten human rigger that is pretty much ready to go, the contacts will need massaging, as the names and ratings were quickly thrown together and as of now are not from giant list from the wiki.  I am new to PBP, but I can easily make the 1 post minimum per night commitment.  Presuming you are still recruiting, I can send you my chummer file to your email address.  :D

Obidancer is the only artist I know who responds to people appropriating his art by offering to make them their own custom art.  Really look forward to this round of portraits!

Also, my second placeholder has some info in it, a bit of a teaser for what's coming up in month 2.

I would like to join in this. I have Zeroman, an elf unarmed combat adept.

I have an Obsidian account already under mark_eddleman (it was used for PFS, so whatevs.)
I will have to dial back my contacts a bit, but everything else was made with the standard core book rules.

I'll make a PDF of him and post it up on Obsidian after getting an invite.

Hello peeps.

So I perfectly understand people find great pics online and want to use them, I totally do the same. And it is a pain to find who made it and contact that person. So...
I've made a few of my portraits artworks available for use by anyone for PC or NPC. You're free to do what you want with them, I won't come bother you ;)

Made an easy enough URL to remember:

Enjoy.

Right now I am focused on getting the last few PCs placed on the portal.  LATE Saturday evening I'll probably post the assignments and then sometime Sunday, hopefully earlier than later, the game posts will go up to start everything off.

I really decided to punish myself this week, lol... doing all of this during a week of visiting friends and family :P

Hey everybody, game threads are up, you can find them in the forum and links in the first page of this thread.

Please pay special attention to the instructions in the OOC Threads, especially the request to make a single post as a placeholder for a lot of meta info on your PC and then not making any new responses until all 6 players have posted in the forum.

Kumiho and Calico, you don't have any text in the opening IC thread because it's up to Tanya to bring you into those runs.  M. Merchant is aware of the requirement, expect to see something from Tanya in the IC thread.

If anyone has any questions they would like to pose here, feel free to do so!

These look great, Obidancer.

One thing I'd like to note is that trolls should have dermal plating that is noticeable.  A smooth skinned troll is actually a formori (like the character Angus).

There has been a trend over the years to sort of 'beautify' trogs in Shadowrun, but the trolls have an actual advantage (+1 Armor) from their dermal plating and I think that should show in their portraiture.

Ok Jayde...

I hate to do this, but I'd like to change my mind a third time. :)
I originally made this character for shits and giggles as part of the "Sum to ten all C" challenge, but I really started to like him as I worked on him.
He's an elven former UCAS armed forces medevac pilot. Rigger/Adept with his own helicopter and everything! He's not nearly as effective outside it as he is inside it, but he's still good backup in a fight. (Of course, I DO realize that the times I'll get to actually USE the helicopter in game will be VERY limited, but still, I just love this guy. I'm willing to risk it.)

I give you, Early-Bird.

I really enjoyed Redline's origin story (on the portal here: https://shaking-the-shadows.obsidianportal.com/adventure-log/say-nara-big-red ), so I kind of hope that in some future 'month' she might come back out to play, but as an inveterate character-waffler I have to admire the poise on the last minute switch :p

I was never playing redline. Redline was the character of whatever player dropped out to make room for Earlybird and I.

Redline was the character of the player you replaced in Tri Tri Again.  The player is unable to make the commitment to the game, so opted out.

I think Beta was trying to put across that it is both a shame Redline left and exciting that you are on board.

No--I was just confused about who was playing who, and picked up on Early Bird replacing Redline but missed the player change--sorry.  (Very much admiration to JM for keeping all of us straight!  Apparently I do much less well at it).  Think of it as "I make some friendly chit-chat to get to know the group better" "Oops, glitched etiquette roll .... "

My apologies for getting you mixed up.  I am sincerely looking forward to seeing late arrival Early Bird in action, however -- the all priority C challenge is cool, so pretty neat to see one of the results hitting play like this :)

Hey for some reason I can only post as Mathblade I can't post as Tasda and I can't seem to get this avatar up. I have a meeting late tonight but I'll keep hammering away at it. If someone has some tips for newbs on the Obsidian forum stuff I'd appreciate it.

I have work and a meeting late tonight but I will check the forums late tonight early tomorrow.

You will always post as your forum name rather than character name in the forums. You identify who the poster is at the bottom of the post as part of the date/time stamp. Not sure on the avatar but you should be able to upload it either to the profile or the character in the edit function by clicking on the current image.

Hope that helps

Wow, thanks for the work Obidancer.

When I was searching for pics, I couldn't find a close match to my characters appearance (just the personality). He's more traditional, so if you could give him long blonde hair that would be awesome.

apologies to the Sorting Spaghetti crew.  The OOC thread is still closed pending one more person to make their placeholder... for now, you can msg me or post here.

If there isn't action by Wednesday, I'll fill the slot with one more person who didn't get a space.

Thx. I couldn't find any description of Div, so this one was just about using my imagination. Yes I can give him longer hair.

Anyone else read these threads, and keep looking for a 'like' or 'rep' type button, because of all the wonderful writing, planning, etc?

I'm trying to keep up with all four threads just because they are fun to read -- most likely life will get busier and I'll be lucky to keep up with the one I'm in and dash off two line responses some weeks, but for now just reading all of this is a blast. :)

Hey guys, a lot of you wanted to use Shadow Community and Underworld knowledge checks and the like.  Want to encourage folks to use the Portal forums 'Needle Net' to ask questions about people, places, and things as well.

https://shaking-the-shadows.obsidianportal.com/wikis/pincushion

This is an IC resource for you guys.  Edit this page and follow the formatting to add an entry to the 'Pincushion' database.  When you save, it should create a link based off of your entry  Clicking that link will take you to a new wiki page to create.

Look at the other Pincushion pages in edit mode to get a feel for how to format :)

I will add stuff that your character might have known, or pictures, or blueprints, if you note that they would be in there <<blueprint>> or <<photo>> etc.

These entries can be for people, for places, etc.

Is the intent here to capture things that come up during the runs (capture key game info), or for more varied items (the clinic that Lady T.A. M. volunteered at, businesses other characters may have referenced in their back stories, etc.)?

Campaign world building, mostly.  Some of it may be important down the line, some of it less so.  But whatever you guys want, as a place to refer especially during the missions themselves.

Some Seattle Shadowrunners active on Needlenet.  Feel free to edit this page to add more names, use the format provided.

This is an entirely OOC list and is meant to give you guys a pool of characters to draw from to make posts on Needlenet.

You'll notice that formatting this makes the names into links.  Clicking on links that don't have pages will prompt a 'create' page.  If you wish, go ahead and do a little write up of any character that's not already done.

If you want to claim one of them or you have a name but not the time to do a write up, then 'create' the page and then put your name there to let others know not to mess with it.

With all the great variety of characters in this game, it is inspiring NPC ideas for my home game.  It can be hard to make NPC seem all that distinct when they all come from one mind, so drawing on other people's inspiration can be very helpful in breathing life and variety into things.

But I just wanted to check, if anyone (including Jayde Moon) feel bothered by the idea of me cribbing your character idea (or, conversely:   would rather that if I do, I keep the character intact to the degree that I understand it), could you please drop me a message?  (I'd rather not clutter the board with this).

I would even be happy to go with your game literally occuring in the same time stream as SDS and would welcome adding your own PCs to the list of Shadowrunners available for the Needlenet posts.

First: thank you for your generosity!

Hmmm, timelines and clock-speed don't quite match up--we started in September of 2075 and are now in Summer 2076 and about to jump ahead by two or three months.  And we are probably averaging a couple of months real-time to one month game time, so are apt to move farther ahead in the calendar.

But I could certainly add some of my characters to Needle Net, in the state they would have been in back in mid-2075.  (It is just a one player game for my teenager, so when school is quiet we'll play many evenings, resulting in a lot of character progression, for the PC and for some core NPC who often work with him).  I'll work on that as I have time to write/format them.

To the players of Shaking Down Shadows...

My last message to you was that I was swamped with all of the training and stupidity of getting ready for my deployment to Kuwait.  I promised to get back to it when every 'settled' as it were.

Well, after a ton of stupidity, I have finally reached a 'normalized' schedule that will allow me to post nearly every day.  I am going to spend Sunday encapsulating everything into the posts so everyone can remember where we are, and then I'm going to start moving forward.  As before, I super duper apologize, when I started month 2 I didn't know about the deployment at all and then it just swamped me.  From February til about 2 weeks ago, it was work every day at 12 hours a day.  The worst was that it wasn't because our mission required it, but that we were grossly mismanaged.  I had to go a few levels up with 'concerns' and bring the situation in front of the General.  In two days, we were down to 6 days a week (Sundays off) and only 8 hours in the office daily.

We're still somehow managing to accomplish our message :-/  So, yay for that.

Look for my posts late late Saturday night or on Sunday.  Hopefully, by weeks end, most of you will have trickled back in!

Willing to try and get back into the swing of things... but after this amount of time, and recently becoming extremely disillusioned with SR5, things may get a bit bumpy for me.

Disillusionment. Tell me about it. I like play by post because I have the time to research and do the math to figure out my next move. Playing at a table top these days I feel lost. Every time I think I understand it they add something in a new book or I just realize I was wrong the entire time (wrong meaning my interpretation was different than the majority. You could argue anything with the general vagueness of the text) I would love to start running Shadowrun in Savageworlds. I was working on an adaptation but without dedicated players who were interested I don't want to invest my time.

Players, I apologize.  The past few months have been weird.  That's the word I am choosing to use.  There's been drama where there shouldn't be drama in my day to day and that has spilled over into just about everything.  The bottom line is that my creativity has been killed as well as my focus to keep things sorted.  Both of these are required to continue co-creating with you in this forum.

Over the past month I've practically avoided poking my head in here because it reeks of failure and disappointment.  While you may be disappointed, I think the level of it is just my own script.  Getting over that and coming here to let you guys know what's up is important and owed to you.

For now, I'm going to just focus on things here, in Kuwait.  Get through it and get done.  Once I am finished here, I will get probably call month 2 a wash.  I won't retcon anything, but I will write up what happens, shop it around to the players so you all agree that 'Yes, this is what my character would do' and then move on to month 3.

You guys as players are amazing, and I will see you guys in early 2017.

I'm always available at my email address: jaydemoon@gmail.com if anyone wants to say hi.

Take ti easy and have a great rest of your 2016.

Sorry you've had to put up with a lot of unnecessary crud on top of all the issues associated with being deployed.  Having your mental resources so heavily drained by that sort of thing is awful (have had similar experiences with less difficult circumstances).

I look forward to seeing you again in 2017!

(and when you write stuff up, as you know Forty is the soul of diplomacy and nuance ;-)  )
