[6e] Can you go above your attribute maximums after character creation?

(1/1)

niven2lu:
The CRB is kind of ambiguous whether you can improve your stats with karma above the maximum during character creation, since the sheet doesn't track your maximum stats. Can you do this?

Stainless Steel Devil Rat:
maximum doesn't mean much if you can buy past them :D

But to clarify, no you can't push an attribute (or skill!) past the maximum via karma.

SR6 p. 63 Attributes
During character creation, only one attribute may be at the maximum for the selected metatype.

According to SR6 p. 58 (and again at p. 66) Character Creation, 'Spend Customization Karma' is 'Step Four' of said character creation process.

Maximum attribute ratings for each Metatype can be found on the SR6 p. 64 Metatype Attribute Table.

What part of this do you feel is ambiguous and need further clarification...?

Michael Chandra:
"Baseline attributes range start at 1 and can go
up to 6. That range is modified by metatype and/
or chosen qualities."

In other words, the limit depends but exists.

"During character creation, only one attribute
may be at the maximum for the selected metatype."

So there is an additional chargen limit, but the max rating always applies.

Meanwhile, Skills are a special beast because chargen max is not the same as gameplay max.

"During character creation, skills can be purchased
up to rank 6 (7 with the Aptitude Quality).
Only one skill can be put at that maximum
level (6 or 7). During gameplay, those skills can
reach 9 (10 with the Aptitude Quality)."
