From Big D's will:
To Alamais, I leave the fruitcake we have exchanged every Christmas since 2020. Unlike you, I’m really dead.
For some strange reason I've been putting a whole lot of thought into this recently. Did Alamais ever collect this? Did he finally eat it? Is this what's behind his involvement in Geneva? If he didn't collect it is there a contingency in the Will to have it delivered to him? Has any of this been covered anywhere? If not I call dibs.
-
Considering how much Dragons like "Surprises" from each other, I bet it was a challenge between each other to deliver it using Shadowrunners. But that's just a guess.
-
It hasn't been mentioned anywhere since Dragons of the Sixth World to my knowledge (and that was of someone who delivered it before Dunk died), but considering that Alamais is very much a "traditionalist" who didn't care for Dunkelzahn's "progressiveness." He considers Lofwyr's (attempted) domination of everything he touches, mainly through S-K, to be beneath the status of the Great for crying out loud.
So I doubt he bothered to show up to collect.
-
So, knowing Dunkie, a team of Shadowrunners delivered it.
-
Indeed.
-
To the corporations and governments of the world, I leave the formula for an infant vaccination that should be administered to all children born after 31 October 2060.
Along the same line, any news about this?
-
I just find it amusing for Alamais to return to (or wake up in) his lair one day to see it sitting there and telling his minions it's time to pack up and go, only to find it waiting for him in his next lair.
@Mirikon
I wonder about that too. There are so many hooks in that book it's mind boggling. I personally think it's too help more children awaken so there is a nice number of magic users for when the Horrors come.
-
Before it could be administered (assuming it would have been) the vaccine was destroyed by Humanis in The Forever Drug.
About a third to a half of the bequests were followed through over the last fifteen years either intentionally by FASA, e.g. the Dragon Heart, or by random freelancers like me, e.g. having Morgan Leroy Hall collect the last of his bequest while attending Georgetown (Conspiracy Theories) or the Token winners assassinated in Jet Set. The rest were basically left for the players to do with as they wished.
That said, the DF isn't going anywhere, and I have very specific plans for it.
-
:-\ doh forgot about that, my Shadowrun lore is slipping. Kinda a bummer that they got all of it.
As a side note, 666 the post of the beast! Blares Iron Maiden.

I like Run to the Hills better. :P

I like Wasted Years personally, or The quick and the dead.

Sourcebook or novel?
And srsly...Humanis destroying all copies of the formula, like those in Dunki/Dacon Foundation vault. Irreversibly? Like...it can never be mixed again? Seems strange...
It would be nice to ask some of our fellow technomancers to get it from Library...
-
Novel.

Hmm. A technomancer definitely could go into the Archives and find a copy of the vaccine.
-
That is assuming that the formula was ever on the matrix to begin with.
-
Anything that was ever on any computer is in the Endless Archive. Though it is possible to delete information from the Archive with a Resonance Realms quest, it is not something most people could do.
-
I can hardly imagine that worldwide spread formula was sent on some kind of scroll...and since it was adressed to "[all] governments and corporations worldwide" I can barely believe that Humanis was powerfull enought to suceed...IE in countries like Amazonia, in Cape town, which is world biotech hotzone...etc. But I can see that authors are able to create this kind of crazy ideas from time to time...But better to get my hands on it and read it, before I question such thing (as it seems it is a canon)
-
Absolutely, I agree, I am just saying there is an in universe reason that supports it being gone. I'm not sure if that is the case Mirikon, because IIRC, there is a statement about sprites doing a search for information lost or irretrievable in the matrix, but only in exchange for data that has never appeared on the matrix.
Edit: sidebar in Unwired page 173 titled Resonance Realm : Endless Archive, last sentence.
-
Yes, but there is plenty of information that has never appeared on the Matrix, because it has never been transcribed to a computer. Ehran the Scribe's true biography, for instance.

What if a back up copy of the vaccine was stored inside the fruitcake since fruitcakes are very preservative?

That would be... That would...
Considering even Dragons won't eat a fruitcake, you could hide a datachip inside and...
Damn. Exactly the sort of slight of claw Dunkie would do, too!

As I recall, it was destroyed before it was distributed.
-
joe That is absolutely brilliant
-
It is, unfortunately it will probably never be found.
-
Yeah... Here's the thing... SOMEONE had to produce all of that vaccine. Uncle Dunkie didn't make every drop himself. Which means a corp had to make it, or a secret lab somewhere. And secret labs still use computers. The formula has to be on a chip somewhere. Even if Dunkie spoke the magic formula out loud, someone would be there to write it down. Chemicals like that are complex. I would suspect that somewhere out there is a computer model of the molecular structure, the base components, and some sort of lab testing results. Dunkie wouldn't release all of that unless he was sure it would work.
Basically, it comes down to this. Humanis destroyed the shipment? *blink* Ok, well, let's make some more. And guard it better, this time.
-
We have no knowledge whether the vaccine was ever actually produced. The will only speaks of the formula.
-
So, what shipment did the Humanis goons destroy? They were going to snail mail the formula? ???
-
Better question: What was it a vaccine for?
-
It may have been to prevent the SURGE effects.
-
It may have been to prevent the SURGE effects.
That was my initial thought as well.
But we know that the game setting as of 2073 does not restrict SURGE players to children, thus it must have likely affected those older. And Big D's words say immunize children born after the date. If it was to prevent SURGE it would have only mitigated a small portion of it. At least sparing children death.
My thought is that he wanted to Mitigate SURGE deaths in the young. But knowing Big D whatever it was, it was bigger than simply that. He was too far ahead a thinker.

-
I have two possible thoughts.
1) The vaccine was for a new strain of VITAS, HMHVV, or other big bad nasty.
2) The vaccine related to either the awakened or the otaku/technomancer genome.
-
Or, it was meant to channel SURGEing into bringing about more Pixies (Windlings), Obsidimen and T'skrang. ;)
-
Apparently it has been covered.
Dug this out of the Horrors thread. Spoilers below for the Novel The Forever Drug by Lisa Smedman.
"this issue was resolved in a novel : The Forever Drug by Lisa Smedman. Apparently, the vaccine is meant to activate the longevity genome in all metahumanity, they would live forever unless killed via the usual methods...
the vaccination plan failed due to a run resulting int the destruction of the factory/ doctors/ loss of data... nothing was left aside.
Lofwyr was said to be behind it ...."
For what it is worth, if that was in the fruitcake it would be one HELL of a fruitcake to get your hands on. (Since this thread became focused on the insides of the cake at some point)
Alexis

PS- I am about to Necro the Horrors thread too.
-
It would be a kick in the face if the fruitcake actually help the formula and maybe a sample of the vaccine. It's just sitting there in a dragon's lair, waiting.
-
Actually, the fruitcake could BE the vaccine. Fruitcakes seem to last forever. Perhaps this particular one is basically ambrosia.
Turning on the longevity gene would actually be an immense problem, there have been numerous scifi stories based around this notion.
-
You got it all wrong the fruitcake was brought up in to orbit to be used as the thor shot that killed Art.
-

??? That would be an interesting choice of ammo. I wonder what the lasting effects would be.
-
You got it all wrong the fruitcake was brought up in to orbit to be used as the thor shot that killed Art.
Could also be the vaccine.
And I doubt even being used as a Thor shot would make it any less of a fruitcake than it was.
-

That's almost sweet... oh.. wait, you mean it couldn't be wor... anyway, a fruitcake baked by a Dragon is a damn fine fruit cake in my opinion!
-
The vaccine was actually mold that was growing on the fruitcake. It wont be ready again until the 8th world.

So we'll see it in BattleRun?
-
I hope so.
-
Nadja might know the recipe, that might be what she was doing all this time.
-
I posted this in my other thread awhile ago but I figured what the hell add it here too.
I think this might be the fruitcake. I guess EVO has it now.....
The Gift. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJIxA2RbW2A&feature=relatedl)

That ... was really weird.
I feel like I'm missing a part of a series.

Want to know what a 'unicorn' is and how it fits in the box.
Really enjoyed this film.

It had that feel for me too. but as far as I know that's the only one.

I actually love fruitcake. I cut up a slice and some orange marmalade on the side if it's dry.
Hmm but anyway, that Vaccine's interesting. The Big D just gave everyone immortality? Did the corps know what it was? If so, wouldn't they be injecting their wageslaves' kids with it so that they could have a very loyal and experienced workforce?
Also, that movie confused me. Was the robot in on it? Or was it hacked by a friend of the delivery boy (I'll call him Fry)?
-
IMO this story element is FUBAR. Like commet probe. Not exactly believeable, but line producers intent.
-
Hold it wasn't the forever drug the stuff the vampires synthesized to make them immune to their weaknesses? Which book am I remembering?
-
I figure it was one of two things
Option One) The robot recognises his owners box and tried to take it before the authorities got to it
Option Two) Object is recognisable, like a holy grail type item, and robot tried to steal it when he saw it.,
I prefer option one, the robot appeared loyal initially, so makes more sense

The vaccine, whatever it was, was destroyed before it could be injected. It might have resisted the comet Surge... then again, it might have made it bigger. Who knows? The Big D was a dragon, and he wasn't always nice.
-
Or clear.

I think that was The Terminus Experiment by Koke and Bond

Sometimes a Fruitcake is just a Fruitcake. ;D

And sometimes, just sometimes, it's the spawn of hell itself.

Thank you! that was it. +1 sir

Somewhere, perhaps only in my own fevered mind was mention that while the vaccine was supposedly to provide longevity to all in actuality it was to get the ball rolling on phase 2 of a draconic servitor race. Lofwyr destroyed it in part because he felt the drakes were a terrible idea (and he should know) and didn't want to see the same mistake repeated.
Alternatively L could have destroyed it because giving everyone longevity is basically an ecological disaster waiting to happen. Global population, human extinction, to paraphrase Kosh, we're not ready for immortality.
-
+1 for the B5 reference. Be seeing ya.

I kinda have the idea in my mind too of it having been to create a servitor race, or more drakes. Wouldn't that have been a kicker, metahumanity approaching closer to dragons in individual power.
-
Mostly I just like the idea that D wasn't all sparkles and light. He put on a benevolent facade, he might even have felt benevolent towards metahumanity and considered some of them friends, but even if my dog is my best friend it's still my dog.
-
Well, if it provides immortality or just really good longevity, it doesn't necessarily mean that you'll stay metahuman.
