Title: Deadly Waves out now, with all sorts of watercraft! Also, an Arsenal update!
Post by: JM_Hardy on <07-02-11/1944:33>
So, we’ve had PDF publications covering aircraft (Unfriendly Skies), military vehicles (along with other military gear--MilSpecTech) and drones (This Old Drone). I’d say it’s high time we put some watercraft out there. So we did! Out now for your purchasing and perusing pleasure--Deadly Waves (for sale on the Battleshop (http://www.battlecorps.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2808) and DriveThruRPG (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=92857&src=FrontPage))! Let’s go to the rundown:

Run on Water

More than two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. That means that two-thirds of the Earth is covered in escape routes, infiltration points, and hiding places that people stuck on land constantly overlook. If you want to know how to use all that blue to your advantage, you need to know the boats that are out there, what they can do, and how your competition is putting them to use.

Deadly Waves collects information about thirty different watercraft, from the fast and agile Wave Cutter to the luxurious, self-maintaining Zeppelinwerke Elite Cruiser to the hulking yet surprisingly quick Maersk-Jorgenson Fast Freighter. Runners can use this book to gain all sorts of options for taking to the water, whether they’re planning a quick jaunt or embarking on a long voyage.

Deadly Waves is for use with Shadowrun, Twentieth Anniversary Edition.

On top of that, we have a new printing of Arsenal--the book with the guns and the armor and the explosions and the hurting--that’s out and about. It has page references updated to Shadowrun, Twentieth Anniversary Edition, a few typo fixes, and a shiny new cover. Check it out at the Battleshop (http://www.battlecorps.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=arsenal&x=0&y=0) or DrivethruRPG (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=57423)! Note that if you have previously purchased the Arsenal PDF, these changes should be available to you as a free update.

Well, that's one major advantage that PDF has over DTF.

That's assuming that 'a few typos' means errata.  I'm betting it doesn't.

Of course it will still be an advantage once errata for any current-ish product is actually created.

Yep, and the errata will of course be hand-delivered by Santa Claus.

Well arsenal allready has errata.

so would one of those erratta for arsenal be a lower availability on the Otomo drone that puts it under twenty?

Simply put, this is the old book with all of its printing errors but with a new cover, and the SR4 page references update to the SR4A page numbers. The original book listed the Fichetti Tiffani Needler as 6P(f) with AP +2. The errata corrected it to 8P(f) and AP +5. This was correctly presented in the Runner's Toolkit Compiled Tables booklet. Now I see that the shiny new re-release of Arsenal prints the Needler with the old, incorrect information of 6P(f) and AP +2 again. Avail and Cost information for the Hammerhead Arrow Head is missing again, Stick-n-Shock Arrow Heads are missing their price, page 25's Colt M24A3 Water Carbine picture is still mislabeled as "Warrior 10 Water Carbine", page 27, the Wildhuter is missing its RC (1) again, the description for Ink Grenade on page 37 is still incorrect saying "blank ink" instead of "black ink". Every single item that was supposedly fixed in the 1.3.2 errata from Sept 2008 is missing from this book. I really don't see how it's acceptable to let a new book contain errors that were supposedly fixed 2.5 years ago.

I also don't think it's unreasonable to expect that if the time and money had been invested in changing page reference numbers, cover art, correcting typos (but some how the typos in the errata are completely overlooked), and doing a new print run, that the errata could have been applied at the same time, especially since someone was already making changes to the document. It's not like the errata is overly long or complex. There was no mention that the errata had not been applied to the new printing. Had I have known this was what I would have been getting, I wouldn't have bothered to finally buy the PDF version of this book. When you talk about this being a new printing, changing the cover, and talk about making corrections, it tends to give them impression that the errors from the old printing have been fixed which is what I was expecting and why I purchased it.

When can we expect this PDF to be updated to contain the corrected information which it should have had to begin with?

Edit: Screw it. I emailed customer service and asked for a refund on BattleCorps (whether or not I get it is another matter). Paying for a new cover and page references is just dumb. You'll get my money when you fix the book like you should have done.

Sorry you had to find this out the hard way but thanks for posting.  I don't have Arsenal yet (just getting into SR4) and I was hesitant to purchase this for this exact reason.  I would rather some time and effort was spent on gathering and inserting errata fixes into existing products instead of small 15 page pdf supplements.  Not that they aren't worthwhile, but there are some bad, bad errata problems that need to be taken care of first.

I'm ambivalent about this new format with the PDF minibooks, especially when they are so close together. Why not put Unfriendly Skies, Deadly Waves, Milspec Tech, and Gun Heaven together in one book and call it Arsenal 2? I understand the current format allows the buyer to pick and choose what they want, but it leaves me with a long list of small PDFs to go hunting for things in.

I believe the plan is to eventually do exactly that, releasing them all bundled together in dead-tree format, eventually.  But I might just be making that up due to wishful thinking and my own (vaguely ironic) preference for physical books I can put on a shelf.

I just print them out and have them in small binders.

Of course, I have a laser printer and an insane amount of paper.

Furthermore, Bogota now has, as of the Watersports pdf, enough access to water to make semi submersibles a viable smuggeling vehicle . .

OK, first it was carnivorous trees, now it's a major waterway?

...

Then again, Winnipeg has some docks set up in various places, and it's literally smack dab in the middle of North America.

don't know about major waterways in bogota, but winnipeg is, at least, not in the freaking andes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andes) i think . .
Quote
The Andes is the world's longest continental mountain range. It is a continual range of highlands along the western coast of South America. This range is about 7,000 km (4,300 mi) long, about 200 km (120 mi) to 700 km (430 mi) wide (widest between 18 degrees South and 20 degrees South latitude), and of an average height of about 4,000 m (13,000 ft).

Along its length, the Andes is split into several ranges, which are separated by intermediate depressions. The Andes is the location of several high plateaux – some of which host major cities such as Quito, Bogotá, Arequipa, Medellín, Sucre, and La Paz.

There are a few decently sized lakes not too far from Bogota, but nothing that connects it to the sea in any way. Even its closest link to a tributary of the Amazon river is a hundred miles or so to the ESE.

*shrugs*  Unless that, like a few other major geographical points, has changed between now and 2073.  Weirder shit's happened.  Mountains have risen and fallen, big chunks of land have been taken back over by momma nature, seas have encroached, you name it...and that's without factoring in purposeful attempts at altering waterways or something (which, especially with magical help, could change the whole flow of rivers in quite a few places on a map).

It may or may not be that Bogota's geographically anything at all like it is in real-life, by this point in the Sixth World.  Folks enjoy belaboring the point because it's a way to keep poking fun at War!, and that's all well and good, but the simple fact is shit changes in Shadowrun all the time, including the landscape, in some impossible ways.  If you want it to work in your campaign, it can work in your campaign.

How do the Shadowrun Missions work now with the de-errataed Books?

Poorly? :)

1)  The most recent printing, errata, and update supercedes old ones.  Sadly, that currently means that both Street Magic and Arsenal are now back to 1st printing status, more or less.

2)  It means I start beating on doors until I can find a way to get things updated and fixed.  It causes me headaches when stuff like this happens.

I would hope that the answer would be a declaration of overt sloppiness, along with a promise to post a corrected PDF for the 3rd printing, and an attempt to get new correct printings out to the people who bought the botched hardcovers.

I still have a hard time believing someone would willingly remove the errata after it had been formally published.

One of the gamers in our group grew up in Bogota. He said that you have travel roughly three hours to get to the first water way that is connected to the ocean...maybe even further, the only thing making it from Bogota to the ocean is and i quote "poop"!

But on the flip side I think they intended that you get smuggled out of the city and to a place you could get into the Sub!

Three hours isn't that far a trip, actually.  Provided there's roads there and such.

'Course, I have a Canadian attitude about trips anywhere, and the importance of infrastructure.

It's not that different from a midwest US attitude. An hour or so drive into school each morning was no huge deal for me, and in the city I live in I consider everything to be within walking distance (city limits is a roughly 5x5 mile square).

Yeah, a lot of the feds I work with have an hour commute every day (to Kansas City), and I have friends who live in Lawrence KS ( ~30 minutes away) who work in KC as well.

Uhmm...you are the one who, instead of simply admitting an error, implies that War! is even worse than previously thought. Because if Bogotá dropped to sea level via MAGIC™, War! obviously missed that fact in the history section and the tactical implications thereof in the rest of the book.

It's not my error, so I don't really care too much (it obviously matters to me less than the people who keep bringing it up), I'm just pointing out that there's been an awful lot of mucking about with Momma Nature in Shadowrun's history.  It's not my place to admit to an "error," when I'm not the one that may or may not have made it.

I'm not saying it's what happened with Bogota, because I don't know.  I didn't write either book so I don't know if it's just genuine errors or if certain writers had something in mind.  I wasn't even passingly involved with either of these books, so I'm just commenting as some dude that owns them and read them, not as any sort of "voice of the company" or whatever...but some folks complain about Bogota's jungle status in War!, others complain about the passing mention of using a submersible to smuggle stuff in and out of Bogota in Deadly Waves...and no one is coming up with ways to make it work.

I'm just saying it's a possibility someone can use, if they want to try and work something weird into their campaign, is all.  There's a precedent for strange earthquakes, encroaching tidal waves, changing coastlines, and magical mountains that have grown or shrunk since the Awakening:  instead of just bitching, people can try to make it work, if they want to.

Sorry Critias, but while it may be understandable that you defend your fellow writers, telling the customers to stop "bitching" about clear inconsistencies is ridiculous! You cannot tell me that the landscape in South America has changed without anyone noticing it  :o

While this mistake could be easily forgiven, because everyone can easily notice that it does not make sense - the Arsenal is the real clusterf*** -, telling us customers to shut up and just "adjust" our setting to make it work is "not nice".

Why can't CGL just correct the pdf and update it, instead of telling us to keep quiet about it? Why can they not explain the geographical situation in Bogota here in this thread and help us adjust our SR-setting? In the case of Bogota in Deadly Waves we are really just having laughs, because it invites us to. So we really don't need to have it escalated by you.

Over and out.

Do me a favor and find me one place I told anyone to stop bitching, told them to shut up, or in any way tried to silence them.  Here's a hint, I'm not.  While we're at it, show me where I'm defending anyone!  Here's another hint, I'm not, I've clearly stated that I don't know why the books were written like they were.  If I somehow came across that way, I apologize, but it certainly wasn't my intent to be silencing anyone;  just offering options and rationalizations on how to make something a playable facet of a Shadowrun game.

In fact, I'm not even sure what you mean by saying I'm "escalating" anything.  All I'm doing is contributing to a conversation.  I didn't write any of the books folks are talking about, so I'm not talking as a member of the company -- I'm just making a suggestion for ways to make it work, as a fan, just like I've been doing on forums like this one for about ten years, now.  If you don't like my suggestion, that's fine.  You're free to ignore me, smite me, do whatever you've got to do;  but kindly don't act like I'm trying to crack down and silence anyone, thanks.

Took the Arsenal reprint as an opportunity to pick up a pdf of my own, rather than borrowing the book from friends. Oh, and also snag a drekload of other pdfs. Having fun supporting my favorite roleplaying game!
Side note: it is quite useful to have pdfs on my comm iThing as a backup to the table copies of books--it lets me look up answers to a rules question while waiting for my turn in combat. Or when working on a character, having a couple monitors' worth open.

iBooks app has a search function, actually. It is.. not fast, however. Sometimes quicker to just page through, especially if you have a good idea where in the book the rule is. Someone with a laptop or DTF will be much quicker. Still, it lets me be more useful than distracting people when my dice towers fall over.

Also useful when you're a poster on the forums that likes answering people's questions.  Ctrl+F is your friend.  ;D
Nah, the Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V are much more important for that.
Finding the relevant text is usually quite easy, but getting it to a post would be a pain in the butt with-out those 2 ;)

Ofcource that trick doesn't, for obvious reasons, work with the older books :(

The new PDFs that CGL is putting out have OCR for their new-old products.  At least, Street Samurai Catalog is, with the exception of the Shadowtalk in the black squares.

Sorry to be late to this thread, but I wanted to apologize for the Arsenal problems. The history of how the reprint got to be what it is is long and tangled, but hopefully it will help to say that the PDF will be corrected once layout can get GenCon stuff put to bed.

Well i was ofcource referring to hard-copies that for some weird reason don't seem to have copy-paste functionality ;)

Sure they do. It's just that the old 1.0 copy-paste hardware takes a lot more time to complete the function.

Still have a VERY hard time believing that this happened twice in a row by accident - but nevertheless it's nice to see an official word that the problem will be taken care of :)

Some of it has to do with the problems of running a decentralized corporation, where not all files are stored at a central repository.

Once the new OS has had it's initial release, I plan on looking at all that very carefully!

That's why I usually set up a SVN repository whenever more than one person needs to edit/view a file. Before Doodle, we even did schedules that way ;)

I had typed out a huge idea of suggestions, but remembered that my networking courses were almost a decade ago and hopelessly obsolete now, and that there's probably a lot better people already on the job trying to work out a solution...

I setup an SVN repository for anything important I'm working on, even when it's just me and/or personal projects I work on at home (but I do software development, so it's an norm for the job). Nothing worse than losing a bunch of hard work, either from data loss, someone overwriting it, or me being stupid and deleting or replacing something I shouldn't have. It's free insurance from boneheaded moves. :)

And another month has passed

I apologize for the delay. We discussed this when I was in Seattle this weekend and developed a plan to get it moving.

If you bought the new version of Arsenal, you should have been able to download a corrected version already. If you didn't, let me know.

Will there be a new version of the reprinted Arsenal brought out in DTF?

Only if we sell out of the existing print run.

@Jason - could you confirm when the updated PDF was released?  My version dates back to July 2011, but based on some of the comments in this thread, I suspect an update may have been released after that.  I'm hoping I didn't miss the update notice from BattleCorps.

Thanks,

AJC

I think the way you tell is to look at the cover - if it's like the one in your icon, it's not the updated version.

My mistake...was under the impression that they released "another" version of the "new" cover to address some errata issues.  At least that was the impression I formed by reading the chain of posts above.
