With a sigh Justin removed his reading glasses, silly things really considering all the corrective surgery options available these days, but he liked them all the same, and found that they gave him a more mature presence. Something he'd found needed when working with people upward of 20 years his senior. Rubbing his eyes he turned away from the scrolling monitors and paperwork spread across his desk and frowned in thought.
Once again some of his senior staff were questioning his decision to NOT consider the, admittedly very attractive, offer that was given to them by Sony. With their latest breakthrough in game style programming architecture a number of larger companies had suddenly expressed great interest in his small but successful business. However, after seeing what had happened with the last three companies 'acquired' by Sony he had decided, as both president and founder of BangBang Ltd., that they were NOT going to sell.
Which brought up another problem.
In a world where hostile takeovers could (and usually did) involve submachine guns and surgical strike teams, how does a person say 'bugger off' politely?
"Mr. Hammer?"
Turning towards the intercom system built into his expansive desk he asked, "Yes, Ms. Ching?"
"Ms. Sakura from the agency is here. Shall I send her in?"
Glancing at his computer monitor and the piles of paperwork once more he said, "Certainly. I'm in need a break anyhow."
Pushing himself to his feet he frowned a moment. With the formal dinner that he'd been invited to, he had decided that a 'companion' who was well versed in Japanese corporate culture was very much needed, especially since he personally had very little exposure to it. After merely mentioning the matter, however, his secretary had simply said, "I'll take care of it."
Rebecca Ching, his executive, and personal, secretary was an invaluable person now as far as he was concerned. The woman had showed up nine months ago and from moment one had impressed him. From reports to agendas to all those little 'perks' that made his life easier, she had covered it all.
And as soon as his office doors opened, he couldn't help but grin.
The woman who walked through the door was striking to say the least. At just over one and a half meters in height, she strode into his office with an almost unearthly grace. Her facial features spoke of a mixed Asian heritage, but whatever else was mixed in, it only served to make her appearance even more exotic. She was dressed in a traditional Japanese kimono, white with some sort of tree dyed into it, and her long black hair flowed freely behind her.
The kimono also, he noticed, hung rather... loosely on her, giving him more than merely a hint at the rest of her figure.
He most definitely needed to think about giving Ms. Ching a raise.
Stopping within arms reach she smiled and with a slight bow quietly said, "Greetings Mr. Hammer. My name is Sakura. Ms. Ching had contacted me for cultural and escort services... among other things."
"Other... things?"
Still smiling she murmured, "Yes, I also-" and then stopped, a frown suddenly on her face as she quickly glanced at the office doors.
Taking the hint Justin almost laughed while saying, "I assure you, Miss, we will not be-" but was suddenly cut off as the woman reached up with one hand and with a quick jerk buried his face in her exposed chest.
Half a second later the sounds of gunfire erupted within his office.
Suddenly in the grip of terror, and finding himself being smothered against the woman, he tried to jerk away only to find the strength of her arm much greater than what he had expected. And then, just as quickly, everything quieted and she left go.
Staggering backward he gasped for breath, his eyes widening as he spotted the large caliber handgun being held in her off hand. Just before he started screaming for security, however, she calmly asked, "Mr. Hammer, are you injured?"
Looking wildly about the room he noticed that his office door was ajar, and someone's prone feet were just barely within view. It was then that the smell of gunpowder, and blood, abruptly assaulted his nostrils.
"Mr. Hammer, have you been injured?"
Snapping his eyes back towards the suddenly fearsome woman, he opened his mouth, but nothing came out. It was only after she asked a third time did he finally say, "Uh... no. Yes, I'm... okay."
Suddenly smiling once again she said, "I am sorry, Mr. Hammer, the suddenness of the situation didn't give me time to prepare you in a more elegant fashion." Then reaching into one of the kimono’s enormous sleeves she drew forth a short two-foot blade with her other hand and said, "Please stay close behind me at all times. We need to move to a different office."
Taking a deep breath he nodded his head in understanding. Turning her back towards him she then smoothly walked towards the office doors, but as soon as she did so, what he saw next paralyzed him.
In shocking contrast to her white kimono there were five spots of deep red that traced a direct line from her left thigh to her right shoulder blade. As she moved, he could see them visibly expanding.
Stopping, she looked over her shoulder at him and said, "Mr. Hammer, we need to leave now."
Suddenly finding himself gulping for air he stammered, "You... you're... you've been shot."
With a tiny shrug, more sensed than seen, she simply nodded saying, "Yes, I am aware. It occasionally happens in my line of work. With your permission, I will contact DocWagon as soon as we have moved to a more secure location. Shall we go now?"
Again nodding, he hesitantly took several steps, falling in behind her as she checked the doorway before leading him past the now dead janitor, a smoking machine pistol still clutched in his hands...
...and he vowed that, if Rebecca was still alive, she'd be getting a damn bonus as well.

I wrote this back in 2000, when bioware had been first introduced and I was seriously wanting to play with it.  Just recently ran across it and felt a desire to share.  Enjoy!   :)
