Hey is there anyway we could find out what posts we are getting smited on? I am not that interested in knowing who smited me, but if I am saying something offensive or incorrect I would like to know where it is so I can prevent making the same mistakes.
-
This has been discussed many times before. The difficulty is that it requires a great deal of coding on the forums to track this information and that code would inevitably run into issues whenever we do updates to the forum software. Even if we put it into place, it would (probably) only tell you where and who smited you. The why could be something as silly is that they don't like your handle and have nothing to do with what you're saying.
-
I can respect that. I just don't particularly care for the fact that I had a pristine rep, then all of a :ave almost the same score negative as I do positive, and have no understanding why.
-
Right, people get that (and that's exactly the thing a lot of us have been saying about the rep system, almost since day one).
The unfortunate thing is there's just not much that can be done without it, without a lot of work and threats to the stability and relatively smooth operation of the forum. Silly code.
-
Meh. I ignore it for the most part. i never give negative, though. Just the occasional thumbs up.
-
Coding.... bleh makes me want to go kill dreamweaver again.
-
I just hate that it makes me look like a troll. I try to avoid causing trouble. It sometimes happens though. Oh well. At least I am not +1/-4 like the guy I was arguing with.
-
I think he is much worse now ;)
-
I just hate that it makes me look like a troll.
Don't sweat it, man. It's what someone says that makes them look like a troll to most forumites, not their rep score.
-
Who cares what that silly rep system says. Any real forum member will know you based on your posts, not some score.
Just noticed Critias already said this, so consider this a second.
-
A few people that are new to the forums might avoid you based on the Rep score, but those that know you here will have better reasons to avoid you! :P
Just kidding! I wouldn't take it to heart - as has been said, someone that has a bug in their butt about something can just smite you every time they come onto the forum (every hour, if they like). Hell, they'll probably smite you for worrying about it.
I still think you're alright, kiddo! :-*
-

Yeah, I mean, hell, look at me! My rep score is somehow through the roof and, yet, I'm still a dick. :P
-
>.> lol makes me want to say ok everyone smite canray! XD
Anyways, no worries I think most of us here have more than a pea sized brain and will think that maybe you just had 1 bad topic or something. Either way nothing you should be too conserned over but i would feel the same if i just suddenly got a bunch of negative for mostly no reason. xD

I could so use that perk in my current game. I need that pickpocketing achievement, as it's the only one in the vanilla game I haven't gotten yet. ;D
Too busy shooting people up with fully-atuomatic weapons or lasers as I like the nice little piles of ash they make. :P (Although the new Battle Rifle is GREAT! And one of the things I was upset they cut.).

Canray, I just have to say, I hate you. I didn't do my postings yesterday because you got me hooked on another webcomic and have been pouring though the entire run of the series. +1 for pointing me towards it, and a evil glare, for the length of the series.

Well, it's not like I pointed you towards Schlock Mercenary (http://www.schlockmercenary.com/).
-
I would love to give you rep for that, but I know about Schlock a long time ago.

Never heard of it....*looks down*...ah pay no attention to that sig quote!!!

I know what you mean ARC. I've been on these forums for a whooping two days, made my second post a few minutes ago, and someone already knocked me to -1. No idea what for since my only posts have been commenting on what pistols I like and complimenting someone on an Equipment PACK. Oh well...
-

Referring to length of Schlock's postings.
Hell, there's even a few NOVELS about the history of humanity meeting extraterrestrials now! By John Ringo, who also had Bun-Bun the SheVa Tank (With a 16" Cannon!).

I wouldn't take it personally - people will smite you for any or no reason. Getting applauded, however - now that takes style 8)

I'd chalk it up to the fact that some posters out there don't like it when named characters are used as handles. If I had to guess, I'd say 100+ of my smites are because of them.
-
I can go along with that, but as far as I know my character has never been published and I normally talk about my Dwarf not my technomancer. I'm almost to -100 though.
-

There's a mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=192) that would let people see who changed their karma, but messing with mods can be a pain.
Unless and until the site owner wants to mess with that, we'll live with recognizing there are idiots who abuse the system under cover of anonymity.

...but messing with mods can be a pain.
Truth here. Installing mods can break the upgrade cycle, requiring a full install of the base application to the new version.

We've discussed the mod, but the problem is that everytime an update comes out, the mod would need to be updated as well.
heh... ninja'd by Agent Smith.

Been there which is why the "unless and until".
Or unless and until Simple Machines integrates it into their standard options, of course. :)

I'm really not all that worried about it. I don't expect Arc to make it into the books, and Spyder should never make it into the books. The only two characters that should make it into the books from my groups aren't mine. One belongs to Mason, the other is Mongo, but I'll leave him for another thread.
-

Hmm, that's unfortunate. I was using Argent as a street name back in the old IRC game run by Nigel.

Another thing to keep in mind is that for some reason most people on the internet view ANY debate more like a spit in the face argument than a structured debate, no matter how nicely or concisely you put it. Generally, if you join into a debate that is longer than a few posts, you'll take negative rep.
Also, people will hit your rep if they think you've been hitting theirs. Most of my negative rep came out during three threads where I was arguing a point. Most of it came out after other posters made slighted comments about me hitting their rep, which I hadn't done (at that point at least). The only time I hand out a negative is if someone is in a debate with me and purposely overlooks a point I've made or just gets flat out hostile. I'm much freer with the positive, but I think I'm just old fashioned.
-
See, I agree with getting a log of at least which post it comes from, (though I know where at least one of my two neg did) just so I have a hint as to why I got the karma. Couldn't care less about the who. That just starts stupid internet wars. I want hints to the why, so I can think about if it was someone not liking my opinion, or if I was overly an ass. Hell, an optional 'reason here' form would be welcomed for either side of that, especially if it's annonymous.
-

The main problem is, without the person applauding/smiting you giving the details of why, this won't help. (S)He could be smiting you just because they don't like you, and it has nothing at all do with the post that the smite would be attached to. And once you ask them to provide a reason, then it no longer becomes anonymous (yes, it could be set so you don't see who it is, but if it records it in a database, it's probably going to record who did the smiting, so it would be possible to find out).
-
I smite FastJack five times a day because I'm a racist against blues. Those damned, dirty, blues.
-
why does he have blue nuyen, anyhow?
EDIT: You think Mason should make it into the books, Arc? That's real flattering, thanks!
Although, Arc could make it into a book once he snaps and tries to hack Zurich-Orbital with his army of collected digital beings trained to meet his commands, and SUCCEEDS! Do you think that goal can ever be realized?
-
Let me sum it up:
This forum has the worst rating system of any I've seen. Including simple post counts. Just roll with it either way :)
-
We could have a system where you use 10 Applauds to buy off a Smite. No, wait, I think I've seen a system like that somewhere... ;)
-

If I could make people bleed from their eyes, ears and hands, there'd be a lot less people. ;D

So glad to not be there any longer.

Having done that too, I'll say it's worse to be a "public servant". At least at tech support I never heard, "My taxes pay your salary, you'd better do what I want."
-

Yep. I've heard that. But at least the tech service complaint is for tech service support (usually). For some reason a large number of people think that if your salary is paid by taxes, THEY know what your job should and should not be. Oh, and they should have controls on what you do and do not spend your paycheck on as well.
Sorry, this is going way off subject and I think I'll end there.
-
I was a civil servant (Perma-Temp position due to budget cutbacks) as well. Luckily, I didn't deal with the general public.
Agreed, back to topic.

I got a question for Fastjack....
wouldn't technically if we knew 1 person what smitting us, then we could report them for harassment? Constantly hitting someone's negative karma has to at least be grounds for a warning, and other sites if someone had so much as smited someone 20 times in a row they could have had much more consequences on their plate.
I think that would be covered under the rules somewhere.... though at this rate ARC is probably going to be the only person with over -300 karma soon. :P
-
I just hate that it makes me look like a troll.
You got a problem with trolls, Omae?
;D

I understand where you're coming from, but if they are smiting you that much and you report them from harassment, then what? We ban them because they don't like you? We ban both of you because you can't get along?
Look at the freelancers that visit the boards. They take a lot of crap from posters, and all of it publicly. If we started banning people based on harassment qualities, half the folks in the clip vs. magazine threads would be tossed. As long as the person isn't bullying anyone, there's no way that we can ban them. If someone doesn't like another person on the boards, that's not harassment.

Only internet trolls. BTW Zilfer, I'm over a third of the way there. He he he.

Only half? Anyhow, you're just happy that someone will have a higher Negative score than you finally. ;)
...
Yes yes, I know, The Special Hell.

WOW! I take it those battles were bad? In all honesty they are both the same. Though you do find a lot more Military that call them Magazines. It's a whole potato po-ta-to thing I guess.
-
They're not that bad. They're worse.
-
Ya know, I wanted to say some smart-ass comment, but then realized the best thing to say was..."yes it is that bad, so lets just leave it alone".
-
When I'M not being a smart ass, you know how serious it truly is.
-
That's ridiculous. Why start a flame war over something so trivial. Call it a clip if you want, a magazine if you don't. By the rules, though the annotation for ammo capacity for most automatics is (c) as in clip. It's a stupid thing to fight about.
-

Good point. Can't argue about that.

This is true. Though i thought that the "intent" to inflict massive amounts of negatives to have other's see the member in negative light. (First impression is important :P sometimes it's not the words you say) Is kind of bullying.
I was seeing it in the light of "oh you don't agree with me? well i'm going to make sure everyone see's that you aren't agreeable."
But yeah, I'm not sure what exactly constitutes as bullying then, besides the obvious outright name calling/foul language. :D
Anyways off that subject, and onto the random tangent i saw. I've still no idea that argument between those.... <.<
*look's at the heaviest ban hammer on the matrix in Fastjack's hand...*
*takes one step away*

I truly think we'd be better off without the Rep feature. It does nothing good.
But while it's there I do wish we could track it. Sometimes my Rep goes down when I spend long periods of time away from these forums, which is pretty mystifying. Are people smiting me for things I'm NOT posting?

That's quite a feat actually.

I had a mate who's blog site actually got more hits when he wasn't updating it. It mystified him - he could blog once a day for a week, and get X hits, and then not blog for a week and get 2-3 * X hits. Since he hasn't updated that for a year, I wonder what the current hits are like ;)

Well it would seem he would still be getting the same average hits. He just wouldn't see them coming in daily.

He was saying the guy got more hits when he wasn't updating. 2 to 3 times as much.
Say he got 10 hits a day when updating daily or weekly.
Well when he wasn't,
he got 20-30 hits.... <.<
-
Eh, I'm not really sure how the hit checker works. I cannot deny this. I figured if he didn't check the numbers would continue to roll over and then when he did he would see a 2 10 hit days for a total of 20 hits and would think that it doubled. It could be a common mistake.
-
Yeah, I was referring to hits/day or hits/time-period, not overall hits between when he'd check it. Some of those blog sites have really cool stats. I think one of the other ones he liked to check was the percentage of new visitors to the site, which was also a higher stat when he wasn't posting.
-
Probably because people were checking if he had posted yet.

The first one of you that tries an intervention with me gets an entrenching tool to the face. :P

Probably because people were checking if he had posted yet.
That would make sense.... if they weren't new.... how would you check to see if someone posted when your new to the site? xD
Also to the post count topic.... on a site I have more posts than both of you combined. I'm nearing 14,000 posts on a star wars RP site I help run. :D
Of course it's been going on for five years but you know..... :P
-
Before I came here, I was a heavy poster on the Battletech forums. Got the "rank" of Lt. Colonel with over 12K posts myself, before it crashed/got hacked/whatever and everyone had to start from scratch.
Life goes on I guess.

Indeed, though i'm sure my post count at all forums combined isn't bad for a just turned 21 year old on halloween. :D
Hehehe..... the plotting begins young no?

One person's corruption is another's education. And if my daughter tries to get my SR books every chance she can, who am I to argue?
As long as they're reading. ;D
I can't really say anything. My boys are 5 this December and I have already started their nerdquest. I spent 600 bucks on a wii, legos, and many other geeky toys. When I move back to near Orlando next Summer, I already have some but I am going to have like 10 more Gundam models to put together with them.

You'd have to ask my wife about that.

Lol, I think i'm too old to be your kid anyways ;P but I was just meaning you are a cool dad to be doing that.
I was raised playing video games and the like and the only person to play with was my friends on the rare occasion they could come over or my sister who was subpar to my gaming skills so it left something to be lacking. I did enjoy it the one time my mom tried to play halo. XD She stuck my friend with a sticky grenade in his downstairs when he was trying to help her. xD
