Title: Skillwire suggestions
Post by: Teknodragon on <12-13-10/1859:03>
Been working on a character concept that involves Move By Wire or Skillwires.  However, I have no experience running a character using either.  What's the break-point between using the two approaches?

Thanks, y'all.

Move-by-Wire integrates Wired Reflexes with Skillwires, it's one of the very first "package" deals in 'ware.

Speaking of Move-by-Wire: Does it give you +2 Reaction per rating, or +2 Reaction total? The wording is ambiguous.

+2 per point of rating.

Move-by-Wire integrates Wired Reflexes with Skillwires, it's one of the very first "package" deals in 'ware.

Yanno, I remember SR3's Move-by-Wire being way overrated, but they seem to have fixed that some in SR4.

'WareEssencek¥Effect
Move-by-Wire2/3/550/85/175Adds +2 Rea/+1 Dodge/+1 IP per Rating, confers Skillwires Rating 2/4/5.
SkillwiresRating x 0.2Rating x 2May load up to Rating x 2 Activesofts with Rating <= Skillwires' Rating
Wired Reflexes2/3/511/32/100Adds +1 Rea/+1 IP per Rating

So Move-by-Wire 3 saves 1 essence and costs 65k¥ for +3 Rea, +3 Dodge over Wired 3 + Skillwires 5, though the increased Availability Rating may eat up much of the ¥ savings.

During character creation, without spending on the Restricted Gear Quality, the best you can do is

'WareEssencek¥Bonus
MBW 1250+2 Rea, +1 Dodge, +1 IP Skillwires 2
Wired 2 and Skillwires 33.638+2 Rea, +2 IP, Skillwires 3

So 12k¥ (2-3 BP), +1 IP, and +1 Skillwires vs. 1.6 Essence and +1 Dodge.

I'd go with Wired and then later upgrade to MBW, though it depends on how tight your BP are.

Thanks for the help; for some reason I just couldn't quite juggle the numbers for a good comparison.

Move-By-Wire seriously creeps out my girlfriend.  She says the idea of constantly twitching and spasming gives her the willies.

Yeah, try one of those electrical ab workout gizmos like Bruce Lee used. It is kind of disturbing to sit there twitching when you're not trying to move.

Having a decent amount of experience with epilepsy sufferers, anything where the preferred operational state is one of constant seizures creeps me out beyond belief.

Move-by-wire is supposed to have a cutoff in there preventing the twitching.  The person isn't actually moving until s/he wills it, then they move with inhuman fluidity and precision.

Still kind of creepy.  Any of my people ever run up against someone with move-by-wire they'll probably scream "Kill it with fire!" and try to murder the hell out of the poor bastard.
