Title: What's the consensus on Strength and AR right now?
Post by: cuidaBeja on <06-20-21/1448:15>
Okay, I'm making a character for my brother's campaign, and I want them to use melee and thrown weapons. While I know that the modern thought is that strength is added to attack ratings for melee attacks, and I have precise strikes so I get extra melee damage.

I can't find actual wording to support the attack ratings thing. I've looked in the two errata that I know of, and it made appropriate changes in the examples, but it didn't seem to say anywhere in information text that it's the rule now?

And how does this work with thrown weapons? Do they get the bonus to AR? Do they get the bonus from precise strikes? I would imagine not the latter, but maybe the first one.

That's a question for your GM. There is no text outside the examples detailing how str is meant to add to AR and if it applies to thrown stuff. Except grenades. Pro tip: Use grenades.

STR adding to AR is SUPPOSED to have a rule supporting the example. It is absolutely the official rule... it just maddeningly doesn't say it outright yet.

Sigh.  Another errata wave is coming.  Hope to have it out soon and when that drops this particular omission should be taken care of once and for all (among many other things)!

Thrown weapons and bonus AR from STR: no, they count as ranged attacks.  STR adding to AR is close combat only.  Not that you can easily tell since the rule didn't get put in yet :D

Thrown weapons and precision strikes:  As written, the RAW is no: Blades, Clubs, and Exotic weapons only.  It remains to be seen if that needs errata to get in line with strength being removed from weapon DVs.  It might.  And if so, it'll be made clear whether it also works on any kind of ranged weapons. And also if so: can't say when that'd be at this point.  Sometime after this next CRB wave goes public.

Does strength affect AR of thrown attacks too though? Is the strength to AR bonus only for things in your hand or is it anything that you're using your strength to attack with?

The attack ratings for thrown weapons really aren't stellar, and part of the reason I'm here is that I want to know if I should go all-out and mod my Chakrams or not in this not-super-optimized party, and if they get strength to AR they don't need it.

As for GM interpretation, I'm in a tricky spot because I'm the shadow-GM for my brother, who doesn't seem to be super prepared to run a game in any SR edition.

No.

If you want to be technical: neither.  It's for melee attacks. (of course note that whips don't add STR to AR.. that part did already get published...)

AH, which reminds me, how does threatening edge work? Do you add your strength to THAT? Are you replacing body+armor with Strength+weapon or are you just taking the weapon value?

The weapon's attack rating remains the weapon's attack rating.  You add STR to weapon attack rating when making a melee attack with it.  So you're just taking the "book value" of the weapon's AR as your DR.
