Tanaka-sama has hired me, Imōto-san. You can trust me as you would trust him. My eyes see everything, my ears ear everything, abut I won't remember anything you want me to forget. That's the part of my job that Tanaka-sama trusts me to be the best at.

Tanaka-sama has hired me to ensure that you can sleep easy. You're safe in my hands, Imōto-san. Nobody gets near you, and if they try, I'll remove them. I can do so as soft or as hard as you want.

I'll do anything you say, as soon as you say it, until the moment I say otherwise. When the music starts, that's when you'll do exactly as I say. If I say jump, you jump. If I say run, you run. When you're life is in danger, it's my dance.

Ah, here's the car Imōto-san. Did you want to go to the Turbo-Kitty Store or Ice Cream Hut first?

Background
Kuwabatake Sanjuro was born and raised within the Mitsuhama Computer Technologies corporation. Indeed, he's a fourth generation company man, his great-grandfather had been a heavy equipment mechanic for Taiga "Tiger" Mitsuhama's original Mitsuhama Mining Company (now the Mitsuhama-Benguet Mining subsidiary of MCT Southeast Asia).  The Kuwabatake's were a working class family and never became full citizens of MCT: great-grandfather worked in the machine shop, grandfather worked in the machine shop, father got a college education was the foreman for the machine shop. Everyone pretty much assumed Sanjuro would be some sort of skilled laborer for the company too. However, early in his childhood, routine screening of kids in the company day care found that Sanjuro was magically active.

But, even as an one of the Awakened, Sanjuro showed the same dogged determination to be average that his forefathers had. His ancestors had been thoroughly "blue-collar" and in a sense, so was Sanjuro. He was a physical adept, but an unimpressive one: running faster, jumping higher, and hitting harder than any unaugmented human... But nothing truly outstanding in terms of magical talents or aptitudes. But that was just fine for MCT, they trained him on how to swing a sword, how to scare away the paparazzi and the SINless, and how to jump in front of a bullet if need be.

Eventually, MCT started assigning Sanjuro to "preemptive protection" missions, Sanjuro would be sent to assist teams made of other "special assets" and "independent contractors" when extracting executives from rival corporations or transporting secure data. After a few such missions, Sanjuro realized how lucrative the work could be and started pulling some freelance jobs on the side.

Stoic and professional when "on the job" Sanjuro also a fun loving and jovial charmer when "off the clock." Though he loves to fight, he loves a good party even more. He has a "big brother" instinct that was nurtured and encouraged during his youth, which let him develop a deep connection to his protectees. Now that he runs the shadows, he tends to treat his teammates the same way. Sanjuro works hard and plays hard. Once he has accepted a job, he never waivers from completing it. Sanjuro is a consummate professional and expects the same of those he works with.

Contacts

Tsukasa Nui was the daughter of a senior executive in the company and her father had pulled some strings to essentially "buy her" a career as an idol singer for her sixteenth birthday. Nui only ever released one album and her idol career was brief even by the standards of the idol singer genre... But she was also Sanjuro's first protectee. That was nearly a decade ago and Nui has long since given up her singing career to become just another anonymous middle manager within the MCT monolith. However, the two remain friends and regularly get together for beers and karaoke whenever they're both able to make their schedules sync.

Eijiro Gonji and Sanjuro were childhood friends, their fathers (and grandfathers) having worked in the same machine shop. But while Sanjuro was sent off to a "boarding school" for Awakened children, Gonji was left behind in their village and went a bit wild in his teen years. He joined a bosozoku "gang" and got involved in illegal street racing. He spent his high school years in juvenile detention. But MCT is reluctant to waste any resources. Gonji was clearly good behind the wheel and his youthful antics might have smashed a few cars and broken nearly every traffic law, but no one ever got (seriously) hurt. So they made Gonji get a haircut, gave him a nice suit, and the keys to a an armored limousine. Since Gonji and Sanjuro knew one another, they were frequently assigned to the same protectees.

Thành "Duke" Nguyen is a low-life scum bucket who, somehow, managed to turn the dingy pho shop he inherited from his aunt into an even dingier pho shop that is also one of the best places to buy black-market guns imported from his contacts in Cal Free State and Pueblo Corporate Council. "Duke" has recently started expanding his business from selling black-market guns to selling the services of the people who buy those guns. Sanjuro doesn't care for guns, but "Duke" knows a few people that like the idea of hiring a `runners that know how to blend in with a high society crowd.

Build Notes:
Although I have had a lot of fun in the two games I've gotten to use my Private Detective, the truth is I just don't think he's going to be a good fit for SRM. The structure of organized play just doesn't lend itself to the sorts of things he's best at... So, I've decided to use my Mulligan and build a more straight-forward Combat Adept

I’m just afraid a character like that — more or less hard capped at Rank 4 for all Skills — won’t prove viable over long term play.

I had a similar question for my skillwires-using character in the Neo-Tokyo Character Optimization thread, and I decided the character is viable for two reasons.

First, the build I used focuses on making the associated stats as high as possible.  With a 10 Aglilty, 8 Reaction, 6 Intuition, 5 Logic, and 5 Charisma, the character has at least 9 dice for skillsofts related to any of those attributes, and 14 dice for weapon skills.  That’s enough to be competent for a long time, especially given the time and Karma costs involved in raising a skill past 6.

Second, having skillwires doesn’t prevent you from using Karma to buy the skill yourself.  In fact, it’s often better, as you can focus your Karma on the skills you want really high, and rely on skillsofts for anything you don’t absolutely need to have as high as possible.

You've certainly used skillwires  (or at least the MBW analogue) better than I've managed in my test builds. I always end up running out of money from trying to keep up on the reflexes and skillwires and skillsofts.
Nostalgia 'aint what it used to be.

They're skill an incredible expense; Both the upfront costs of the `jacks and `wires (or MbW) and the upkeep costs of growing your library of skillsofts. A skillsoft subscription service can help, allowing you to forgoe having to buy chips for lesser used things (but still giving you the ability to say "Oh, yeah, I know how to pilot a zeppelin!" when needed). However, that leaves you dependent on having wireless access and a hefty recurring monthly cost.

Solid character.

A couple suggestions.

1.  Move 1 point of Reaction to Intuition.    Same Dodge,  Same Physical Limit,  2 more Knowledge Points,  1 more Mental Limit.

2.  Remove the 2-Karma skills purchases.  Add JoaT to your Qualities.  Then save 7 Karma & buy 7 L1 skills after Chargen.

3.  At 4 Charisma, your not really the Face.
I would drop 1 of your Social Skills for Sneaking,  that or move the 2 Group points to Stealth group.
But I think your overly social & could use some stealth

4.  Overall I'd do skill points as follows.  Then buy L1 skills post Chargen for 1/2 rate of JoaT.  But that is me.
  7- Blades(Kenjutsu)
  6-Con
  6-Etiquette
6-Perception  (Don't specialize Perception in anything Audio/Visual as those are easy with Eye/Earware.   Pick Smelling if you must or just go raw skill points to 6
  7-Sneaking (Urban)
  2G-Athletics

5.  Drop a level of Kiai/Light body to pick up Agility Boost-1, something no combat adept should be without.

6.  Consider saving less Karma for those L1 skills & picking up Catlike as well for the Sneaking bonus.
It should still leave you with enough for a couple quick purchases before your first run.

These are both brilliant ideas. A friend in one of my online games already pointed out the Jack of All Trades advantage, but we'd missed the Reaction to Intuition switch.

3.  At 4 Charisma, your not really the Face.
I would drop 1 of your Social Skills for Sneaking,  that or move the 2 Group points to Stealth group.

He isn't really meant to be the Face, I wanted to be sociable enough to be able to make small talk fancy parties (Etiquette 8/10 should let me blend into a crowd at a swanky fundraiser or nice restaurant) and tell a convincing lie to a mostly disinterested party (Con 8 should get me a "I'm sorry officer, I didn't know my taillight was broken."). But obviously my main focus for social skills was Intimidate...

Even maxed out, I'm under no illusions that I'll be able to stare down a Red Samurai or a NTMP SWAT Team, but I've noticed a lot of SRM modules (and more than a few homebrew GMs) absolutely love to have the "random encounter" with gutter-punks and street gangs that gets sprung on you just after a meet with Tanaka-san/Mr. Johnson or when you're trying to lay low in your safe-house. I want to be able to give them the patented Toshiro Mifune Stare of Doom and make them reconsider their life choices.

Build Notes 2:
Final Verision! Incorporated some of Tarislar's feedback (specifically, JoAT and bumping Intuition) and played through the London Falling module in a Skype game with some friends back in Detroit. Holy heck, that was a brutal* couple of runs! I've decided to grab the Automatics skill based on my experiences there. Sanjuro is not a gun guy, but sometimes you just need to lay down supressive fire and hope for the best. Bought a gun too, although it will not be carried on a routine basis while in Neo-Tokyo. I should probably invest in some barrier foam grenades and flash-bangs too.

* Ninety @#$% ghouls in a locked basement! I'm never going to wash the smell off of my katana.

I would try to find 10 karma somewhere. Then move two points from Logic. One to Intuition and one to get either Reaction or Charisma up to 5. Then use the 10 karma to reraise Logic up to 2.

You aren't using Logic for much and getting two atts up to 5 from 4 for 10 karma is an incredible deal.

(If you have used karma for Contacts, that's 3 karma back. Knowledge skill points will stay the same.)
