Hi my whole group is pretty new to Shadowrun and I was looking at making a mage for our first game. I was lookng for good places to start. We are allowed to use only the core rulebook, I might be asble to con my way into minor street magic things and we have 400BP. The biggest problems I have with the group is that the other two PCs are both adepts that excell in melee combat so I need to try at least to be more versatile in what I can do. Any game we play will be rough with the three of us but I would definitely love pointers. If someone comes up with a concept I really like I could be convinced to try something other than a mage. Thanks in advance.

How about a Hacker / Burglar/Security expert ?
if the other two are allready melee Experts ,don't try to compete in their own Field.
A Hacker is very Important (getting Infos ,hacking kameras ,Spying with Drones) that combined with a
Security expert and yo'll become the most valuable Member of the Team. Fighter can be exchanged, but not the Hacker& B&E Expert

I guees not knowing the tech side that well what are some good places to start with that? I am pretty sure I dont want to be a technomancer. I just haven't had much time to read the chapters yet on the Matrix, but I do like the idea of a B&E style guy.

Another idea would be go weapons specialist. You buddies could use some suppresive fire while they close with the enemy.

Well, if you were looking at slinging spells, a technomancer may still be up your alley. They're formatted similar to Mages, so it may be a bit easier for you to digest. Other than that, the other suggestions are pretty good. You could also put some Face skills in any character you create to make sure the team has a good negotiator.

A Technomancer ist interesting ,but he needs a very long "developement Phase" he'll be needing 200-300 Karma to be even or better than a Hacker

First Decision,Snack happy
Do You want to play a Mundane Char or an awakened.
A Hacker/Burglar Adept is also a good Choice.....
Than the Group is playing 3 Adepts. You could form an Initiation Circle

second Decision.
If you play the Hacker Adept. Do you want to get Cyber/Bioware and loose Essence or not.

It does sound like your team needs a face or if you are willing to learn some harder rules a hacker.  You can easily play a face mage if you want.  There are some good social skill spells that would help you along.

I think I would be willing to try some sort of hacker. Are their big benefits to being an adept or should I just say screw it and be mundane all the way. Our first game is going to be Saturday. Both of the others seem to be leaning on just I smash your face with my fists. I dont think they have much in the way of stealth at all so I see being able to sneak in and do my thing as a very useful tool just like I said unsure where to start. Although I would like to be decent in a firefight as well since the group prolly needs some ranged combat.

Ok,Snack happy  :)
I would Advise you to go for an Adept with Hacking and B&E as main Focus
and back Up Face.

You're using the Standard BP system,right ?
make it an Elf with full 200 BP on Attributes: CHA 6 LOG 5 AGI 4 STR 2 CON 3
WIL 3 REA 3 INT 5 (thats 200 Pts )
& Edge 3 (220 Pts total for Attributes

Just curious as tohow making him an adept hacker would be more beneficial? I do like the stats they look cool I will try to write him up when I get a chance. It might take me a bit to work on figureing out what gear and such I will need to buy. I am also not against being cybered up but I dont know if I would do that at the same time with being an adept. Thank you for your suggestions any other tips are greatly appreciated.

I'd really like to help. But than You have to make up your Mind . 'ware or no  'ware, 1 Essencepoint or 2, what Do you want to accomplish.
What about Merits & Flaws.
I'm quite good at making Chars and also at Min/Maxing (but no Powergaming)

Suggestions for Merits and flaws:
Adept(5)
Social Chamaleon(5)
Combat Paralysis (-20)
Immplantatbedingte Immunschwäche(somebody has to translate this, I'm without english Books)(-10)
One more (-5)

K all I know is I want to do a hacker now with some face abilities and hopefully can hold my own in a fire fight. I can only use the core book others I would have to beg for. I really do like the idea of being the hacker/burglar. I'm unsure if thus route is better suited with adept or cyber.

I'd say cyber.  You can make an adept hacker, but it's kind of tricky and never feels quite right.  It does make for very interesting backgrounds and roleplaying opportunities though.
