Title: Cybereyes and Vision Enhancement

Vision enhancement: This sharpens a character’s vision at all ranges, providing visual acuity closer to that of
the average hawk than that of the average metahuman.
It adds its Rating as a positive modifier to your limit on
visual Perception Tests.
Wireless: Add the vision enhancement’s rating as a
dice pool modifier to your visual Perception Tests.

How does wireless work for cybereyes with this enhancement? Do you need to have a datajack and a commlink strapped on so you can slave your cybereyes to it?

I believe that is the case if we go by the smartlink description in pg 433:
Quote
If you’re using a smartlink, the smartgun system increases the gun’s Accuracy by 2. The smartgun features
are accessed either by universal access port cable to an
imaging device (like glasses, goggles, or a datajack for
someone with cybereyes) or by a wireless connection
working in concert with direct neural interface
.

If yes, I guess that is the same deal with all other enhancements. You need to get them to communicate with the Matrix to get their bonuses, right?

The other option (that your cybereyes are wirelessly communicating with the Matrix) means that they can be bricked. If that is the case, why bother?

Your vision enhancement need to have wireless ON (if you want the wireless bonus). That is it.

You might or might not also need DNI. Doesn't say so probably not.
You get DNI by a normal data jack or wearing trodes
(or an internal commlink or internal cyberdeck or control rig headware)

You don't need a comlink and you don't need a sim-module.
(you get DNI and your vision enhancement can connect to the Matrix just fine without one, but you might want to protect them with the firewall of your commlink)

Your eyes does not need to be wireless ON - you don't even need cybereyes; vision enhancement can be installed as a retinal modification to natural eyes for 0.1 essence and have wireless ON on their own.

So, say I got all these installed as mods on cybereyes.
What is wireless then? The mods? The eyes? Can someone hack my cybereyes? Smartlink says you need DNI to access it.

There have been a couple of interpretations of this, I believe.

I favor the interpretation where you can brick anything that has wireless turned ON.

For security conscious individuals (Shadowrunners & > PL2 peeps is what I usually go by), anything that does not have a wireless bonus will be OFF by default. They are judicious about what equipment they keep wireless ON. For everyone else, they're blissfully unaware of the dangers of hackers since GOD keeps them "100%" safe and leave all their stuff turned wirelss ON, whether it provides a bonus or not, so they don't miss out on software updates, etc.

But that's just my interpretation. I think it allows for a pretty fun game where the team can pull a few tricks on non-trained people but may have a bit of a tougher time with better trained opponents. At the same time, it also allows them to protect themselves from a lot of run-ending hacking attacks that could otherwise occur.

ETA: After going through it a few times, I believe we've come to an understanding that DNI is required to do anything that would otherwise require manually doing something to the gun (Taking a free action to mentally change the firing mode, ejecting a clip, firing the gun without pulling the trigger, etc)

ETA2: So, in your case. The eyes are not wireless on. The Vision Enhancement and Smartlink are Wirelss ON if you want the extra bonus fro each. The VE and Smarlink can be hacked, the eyes cannot.

Yep, that is correct. In order to give commands to the smartgun, you NEED to have DNI (datajack, headware-commlink, trodes, etc).

If we go by the ETA 2 version, the best course of action still remains datajack-commlink with everything (smartlink-audio/video enhancement-tacnet) slaved on the commlink if you want wireless ON. The commlink of course should be running silent and slaved to the hacker's deck.

I can take those risks.

The VE and Smarlink can be hacked, the eyes cannot.

Unless they can plug into the Universal Port on your eyes and hack the hard line!  :p

this is my rule of thumb;
if the device/cyberware have a wireless bonus then it is by default wireless ON unless the player state otherwise. If the device/cyberware does not have a wireless bonus (or function) then you should probably consider that an elite shadowrunner would by default have it wireless OFF.

cyberyes themselves does  not have a wireless bonus so there would be no point in having them wireless ON. Nor does muscle replacement. Or cyberlimbs....

retinal modifications to natural eyes does not have a universal access port. you either run a cable to your data jack (and access your eyes with neural interface (not to be confused with DNI)) or you run your vision enhancement in your eyes with wireless ON. to get the specific wireless bonus you need to have them wireless ON (but in the case of the smartlink you can still get the limit bonus and the ability to shoot around corners etc as long as you can present the information from your smartgun to your smartlink, you can do that with a cable from your smartgun to your data jack if you have the smartlink in your eyes - or a cable from your smartgun to your goggles if you have smartlink in your goggles).
