Title: Updates on upcoming products?
Post by: Mara on <04-16-14/0358:36>
I was looking at the coming releases page, and noticed that it seems to be rather out of date.
First, it only lists one Introductor Boxed Set, not the two that the product got split into.
It still lists Splintered State as coming(wasn't this, like, already released?)

Now, given SR seems to do things different from the BattleTech Side, I can understand them still listing
Run and Gun as "coming soon," because the SR side doesn't consider something released until it
is released in print(while the BT side considers something released as soon as it is out in PDF).

However, shouldn't there be something new showing up following the release of Splintered States?
Shouldn't they already be announcing the book to follow Run and Gun? SHouldn't it list both of the
split Introductory Boxed Set products instead of just the original "planned, but plans have changed"
product?

The voices from the metaplanes, they tell me that the magic book is next. I do not know whether I can trust them though.

Well, remember that, originally, Run Faster was up before Run and Gun..and then was dropped completely..so..

Anyways, I was the one that reported this little tidbit. It specifically came from this Facebook post back in March:
Quote
Today's Phrase that Pays is lifted directly from the art notes for Street Grimoire: "corrupted coconut octopus." jmh

Source (https://www.facebook.com/shadowruntabletopgame/posts/10152234637924591?stream_ref=10)

It was the only mention of an upcoming product apart from R&G being even mentioned, the other being the board game Hostile Takeover. Other then that, not a peep about Data Trails, Run Faster, Rigger 5 (?), or whatever-the-hell-Augmentation-5th is going to be called. It's admittedly not much to go on, but that's really all we've got. CGL has been known to work on one big source/rulebook at a time, so I doubt the other rulebooks are being worked on at the same time as Street Grimoire. Other than that, nothing on what's happening with Stolen Souls, and nothing on Seattle Boxed Set that was teased in the Digital Tool Box.

Basically, first official sourcebook of SR5.

Details more development of the Sybil Virus plotline, setting details on Manhattan, and crunch wise is supposed to provide stuff for extraction runs.

Keeping up with bleeding edge caused FastJack to be stuck in a battle against his own mind. And then there's a little gun named Excalibur that was bleeding edge...

Full-time employees are far more expensive than art commissions and free-lancers - so yeah, they can afford the one but not the other.

...and that was ALL I needed to know. I only bring this up because other freelancers have said time and time again that it would be too costly to make all the releases full-color...yet now come Fifth, it's apparently not an issue anymore.

Tell me a job that an FTE can perform that a contractor can't.

I was hoping dedicated oversight and communication between the other freelancers. Because I still continue to get the impression when several people are working on the same product, there seems to be very little consistency between those particular parts.

Do you ever make a post that isn't bashing the hell out of Catalyst for something?

I would hope that you're confusing me with someone else. I'm not exactly That Guy that's been dropping insults as CGL every chance I get just cause I can.

The "too costly" about making the books full color was in regards to what price Catalyst would be asking us customers to pay, at least that is how I always understood the various conversations.

You can actually see exactly what full color does to the cost of a book: Unwired and Run & Gun have similar page counts (R&G has ~8 more pages, which is not significant to pricing), and their respective MSRP are $34.99 and $49.99 - a significant factor in the difference being the cost of color printing vs. black & white printing.

Catalyst seems to be following The Onyx Path, however, and is now providing both a high-quality "standard" version of their books and a "deluxe" version as well - which I hope they keep doing, even though I am not sure that I will be able to manage fitting all the "deluxe" books into my budget.

Well now I'm curious as to what changed that decided to make them go full-blast with making all of their releases colored when they previously didn't want to. And this probably isn't going to help the accusations of CGL being more money-grubbing.

(which BTW, is also what's preventing me from buying R&G: $24.99 for a PDF is too rich for my blood, especially a book that's half as long as the Core book, yet the Core book PDF is $5 cheaper, and with all the editing errors. Oi)

The industry has, as a whole, switched to full color hardbacks for core books. Those are the books that catch people's attention, after all.

As for why the corebook is $5 cheaper then then Run and Gun in PDF? Loss leader. Also, the corebook is going to be purchased
by just about everyone, so it can have its cost spread out more then supplemental books that are only going to be purchased by
GMs and specialists(and shared around the table).

Just FYI, but it's not like we've never released color products.  Look at Street Legends, for instance.  It's kind of a tradition to always toss out a full-color product or two a year, it doesn't mean the budget is there (for gamers) to always pay $10-$15 more per product, to make up for the higher printing costs, etc, etc.

So, yeah.  Some stuff's full color, some stuff's not, and that's nothing super new.

I'll ask for a rundown at least to put on the tumblr. Various items have been referenced in the back of R&G, Twitter, websites, etc., but I'm at a loss as to how much they want people to know what is coming. I'll be honest, I doubt I'll get much more than titles right now.

Bittersweet.  Glad more books are coming shortly, but I almost would rather have no books for six months and then get Data Trails rather than a book a month for a year and then Data Trails after.

Why was Run Faster dropped?  Nobody thinks that extra character creation stuff would sell?

I understand that the core book sold out?  If so then why are there not more products being produced for this game?  I feel like there are a lot of gaps in the core rules that can be filled with splat books.

Do we at least know when Run and Gun is coming out in physical copy?

No information provided yet as far as I know. I imagine that they won't tell, as usual, until they get them back from the Printer.

There are more products being produced. Run Faster is likely just delayed until later in the cycle, they're currently working on Street Grimoire. Seems like they do it slowly, 1 core book at a time.

Here's something I wrote up as a temporary fix for shapeshifters when someone asked the same question on tumblr, though it may be a bit too quick and dirty: http://shadowrun.tumblr.com/post/84073731688/when-might-we-see-some-books-carrying-various-sub (http://shadowrun.tumblr.com/post/84073731688/when-might-we-see-some-books-carrying-various-sub). I think it works well enough for all non-metahumans. I think that metavariance is best handled as a special Quality.

As for a list of upcoming products, this is exactly why I suspect Catalyst doesn't like to put those names out. There is enough information out that I'm surprised there isn't some sort of fan-made list by now.

Don't forget SR5 Augmentation.

Personally, I think that's a bit of an optimistic estimation. I'd say at least 2 more rulebooks, but 3 if we get lucky.

Historically, the Rigger book is the last one, as they're notorious for being published just before the end of an edition. Except SR4(A), which didn't have one, but that was a cheat.

I know the Valiant RPG hardcopy is being released that day (The PDF is already available). So that seems reasonable to just have the SR5 QSR and throw in a new adventure to go with it.

Could be a Giant. Not saying it is or isn't, but it could be. Or could be a big-ass troll even by troll standards.

Measuring, and assuming that the human-looking fellow in the image is roughly 1.8 meters tall, it turns out that troll is roughly 3 meters tall... that doesn't actually seem all that far off of normal to me.

...though I guess that would make him 10' tall while the average troll is only 8' 2" tall according to the SR5 book.

But then, the book also says the average human is just under 5' 9" and I am 6' 3" - so if trolls experience the same degree of deviation as humans in height, then my equivalent "tallness" would make a troll 8' 10.5", and if we took the equivalent "tallness" of the troll depicted in the art and scaled it to human ranges of height, well, it's only 7' tall - not incredibly uncommon at all.

I actually think the proportions in the art are good - shows how seriously huge trolls have always been, even though the art kept depicting them as barely taller than humans.

Hey guys.  Don't get too excited here.  They're not real covers (except for Frost and Fire), or even real products.  They were putting together images, titles, and author names just to show you how the layout/art design process can go, not because I wrote an actual Echo Mirage novel.

I mean, I kind of want to now, and it has to have a cool motorcycle chase in it (because I'm a fan of the green cover, myself), so that a team of combat deckers are fighting the first great battle in the Matrix while their meat-bodies are being threatened by an implacable elven street samurai (with the Shadowrun logo on his tee shirt)...but I didn't, and it's not planned.  Other stuff is.  Even other stuff with my name on it, with a working cover (that looks awesome).  Just not Echo Mirage

Look closely, and you'll see the back-cover blurb is just the lyrics to Electric Avenue, too.  Which, I mean, it also gave me an idea for a story, but I'd never submit that for a synopsis.  Not by itself, at least.   ;D

Doesn't matter if you would - Catalyst won't put out a date until they're 110% sure they can meet it.

I can tell you this: no art for it means it's not likely to come out in 2014.  From what I've seen thus far, it takes a good 6 months from the release of art for the book before it comes out.  You'll start to see preview PDFs about two months prior to release.

I know some may disagree, but I like the healthy dose of fluff/healthy dose of crunch format.  I know finding the right mix to broaden your customer base is tricky, but it's a fun (and scary) read and there's stuff in it that's relevant to my character, even though he has nothing to do with CFD.  And I loved the black trenchcoat/pink mohawk shout out :)

The first 20-odd pages of Bug City will probably always be the scariest thing I'll ever read that's Shadowrun-related, but this is in contention for the runner-up slot.

I'm still reading through Stolen Souls, but man, there is some damn good art in there.

Not to rag on the artists, but there was some very questionable pieces in Run and Gun.

But that human girl on p58 and that troll guy on the bike on p62. Those are really bad ass. And of course the cover is really good too.

So I must commend the artists that have worked on the Stolen Souls art. Because it's pretty top notch. Way better than the art we were getting in 4th ed.

Just one thing, what's up with everyone having a white aura around them? I don't think its necessary if you're trying to make the character's stand out from the background.

Someone speculated that the way how they do these art pieces is that they have the various elements (characters, props, background, etc.) done separately and that the pieces are overplayed on each other later (hence the scaling differences of some of the characters in the example novel covers). So maybe that outline is there to differentiate all of th non-BG element?

For starters, the Intro Box has already been released in digital form as the Digital Tool Box here. (http://"http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/125721/Shadowrun-Digital-Tools-Box?manufacturers_id=2216") This set includes the Intro Box and the Alphaware Runner's Toolkit.

(it should be noted that they have stated that there will be a "Betaware" Runner's Toolkit that will be closer to the SR4 kit since the Alphaware box is, as CGL has admitted, is all the stuff they separated from the box)

Everything in there should be in the physical release of the set. The other physical release being SR dice.

Unless these spec sheets are different from the ones I'm familiar with, these are basically layout boards for art, text, and other elements.  It's far from finalized, but it's an important step.  Once you've got your text done, you've got to lay out the text and integrate it with the art and such.  These allow you to know where you have to expand or contract text, change art assets, etc.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it at GenCon, at least, personally.  Maybe those boxed sets from a few months ago, too.

THIS WAS IN NO WAY AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT.

Thank you very much. That is encouraging :)

Sounds logical. Now will you be at Gencon this year Critias? I figure I owe you a beer because my group loved Elven Blood best so far. (Hoping you'll give us a sequel perhaps?)

Me?  Yeah, I'm always at GenCon.  I'm not gonna be running anything this year, most likely (my voice just can't take it, versus the background noise), but I'll be around.  I check by the booth a few times, I try to show up to the What's Up With Shadowrun seminar, I float around the gaming area (especially since it's all CGL, so I'm right there next to the BattleTech, and GenCon's my only chance to play my beloved stompy robots all year).  I'm around.  We might try to do a hang-out session again Wednesday night (though with a reservation this year, ideally), or something like that, too.

Mostly, though, it's good to hear y'all had fun with Elven Blood.  :)  It was fun to write, and cool to watch folks play it a few GenCon's ago.  It's always cool to know folks enjoyed some of my work.

Including news that they're expanding the line to include "RPG Game Aid" miniatures to branch to all of their major product lines.

Yeah, I was about to say:

While my knowledge regarding tabletop minis is fairly limited (mostly to D&D 3.5-4 minis), I would think that that kind of detail would cost quite a pretty penny.

And the article cites that one of the other problems was balancing out quality VS cost...

Depends on the company and materials. Reaper puts out some very quality minitaures.....at reasonable prices. Games workshop puts out some quality miniatures and their prices are insane. Infinity produces some very nice minis, and their prices are inbetween. Depends.

There are so many variables even after the sculpt is finalized. Metal or plastic? Spin cast or injection? Type of plastic? On as prune or individual molds?

The big thing is finding a company that will answer these questions for you based on the needs you give them along with the next best two or three options.

Sounds like GB gets this and is working well with CGL to actually move the product foward.

It could be this was written up earlier than the others so they were looking at the transition more at that time or maybe they are doing the dual stats as there is still a strong 4th ed base that has not jumped over onto 5th yet?

It's kind of nice in any case.

Started a thread over in Rules discussing the NQ here (http://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?topic=16792.msg296890#new)

Edit: As for aged dwarf or elf, maybe a level 1 aged for dwarf, depending on how you adjust it for their lifespan, otherwise they pretty much would have to be a spike baby and the elf definitely would need to be a spike baby to even get close to be aged given their projected lifespan.

It shows. Really badly.

I've been flicking through and seeing some nifty thing that my medic character could use, only to notice that it's SR4 only or refers to Street magic or what have you. Even then, a lot of stuff has clearly not been updated properly. There are references to the Gymnastics skill being used to help avoid bullets in SR5 for instance (no it doesn't, not unless you took that one quality from R&G).

I, however, am saying you're wrong on this one, Novocrane, and you should probably flip to page 190 and on.

Quote from: SR5 p190
Active Defenses
Sometimes you want to do a little more than duck and weave to avoid incoming attacks. For those times characters have one extra option for ranged attacks and four options for melee attacks, all of which reduce the defender’s Initiative Score.

Full Defense
A character may increase their focus on defense against any form of attack at any point in a Combat Turn, so long as the character is not surprised (see Surprise, p. 192). <znip>

Dodge
Any character, armed or unarmed, looking for a quick, short-term boost to his melee defense can use a Dodge Interrupt Action against an attack at any point in a Combat Turn, so long as the character is not surprised (see Surprise, p. 192). <znip>

Parry
A character armed with a melee weapon and skilled in its use can gain a quick, short-term boost to her melee defense by using a Parry Interrupt Action against an incoming melee attack at any point in a Combat Turn, so long as the character is not surprised (see Surprise, below). <znip>

Block
A character skilled at Unarmed Combat looking for a quick, short-term boost to her defense can use a Block Interrupt Action against an incoming unarmed or melee attack at any point in a Combat Turn, so long as the character is not surprised (see Surprise, below). <znip>
Emphasis mine.

Yes, it's poorly phrased, but that first line is pretty unforgiving; 1 option for ranged, 4 for melee.

Sounds like someone loves the Kung Fu :P

Though to be fair, couldn't a street sammie wired up so tight he can count hummingbird wing flappings potentially use a manhold cover to block bullets with ala Capt America style?

The rules don't support it but maybe with some tweaking....

Oh man, riggers got so shafted in this book.

All the rigging rules in the book refer exclusively to SR4 (Command? Response? What are these strange terms you use?), barring one. The one bit where they remember Riggers still have rules in SR5 is to correctly reference the page that states you take a -2 penalty when applying first aid or medicine via remote control.

thats just continuing the theme mate, riggers def got short end of the stick with this edition.
we've got the prices for a few new toys, a couple extra vehicles, but practically no crunch on how to actually use it.
really really need a rigger splat book. between us and the TM's, we're def hurting the most for flexibility

Don't you just love it when there's a debate going on that you can't see?

Anyway, page 188 (Melee Defense has extra options) and 191 (short-term boost to his melee defense) are clear:
Dodge is melee only, not ranged. Page 203 has the sole exception: Ramming can be Dodged against. Which is understandable, it's a melee attack but Block&Parry wouldn't really work against hundreds of kilograms of car coming straight at you. "I block the car." "What. No." "Dude, I block the car." "No." "I block it." "Fine. You block it. You manage to keep it from driving over you, but you get squashed against the wall behind you by the momentum."

I'd like to get this book but I'm not sure if the fluff is worth it when the crunch sounds this bad, even IF it would be Rigger-legal by the time I start Missions again in September and could help when our campaign converts to SR5 in a month. Anyone?

bullets and badages isnt going to help you much as a rigger, there are only two drones in there.
stolen souls is better, you've got some nice toys but you'll need to come up with the rules yourself.

Stupid question: do we have any info on the "Shadowrun Options" line, referred to in the main announcement? An extension to that, what are the various "lines" associated with Shadowrun? My last look indicated core rulebooks, core supplements, deep shadows supplements, setting supplements, plot supplements, adventures, campaigns, fiction and e-books.

Thanks in advance.
Title: Re: Updates on upcoming products?
Post by: Critias on <06-04-14/1535:51>
What do you mean by "info" on the Options line?  They tend to be little one-man-band e-books, where one of us got a wild hair and a gleam in his eye, so we asked the bosses if we could have a slice of budget to write up something about X.  They give us enough rope to hang ourselves, maybe toss a little artwork our way (or maybe not), and then slap "optional" on it when it's done, because we're rolling up our sleeves and making something we love cooler (in our head) but more complex (in everyone else's).

That's...I mean, that's the Options line in a nutshell.

It basically got kicked off with Way of the Adept, where the writer felt he was fixing some balance inequalities, but no one else involved felt the fix was needed, and/or they felt it was adding too much complexity to the otherwise-dirt-simple "make an Adept, buy stuff."  They liked what was written enough to publish it, but were concerned about the balance issues, so called it optional and it went to print.
Title: Re: Updates on upcoming products?
Post by: AJCarrington on <06-04-14/1713:07>
Thanks Critias. For some reason, I don't even recall seeing a reference to the "Options" line...didn't know if it was a new classification of releases. That question has been addressed ;)

Maybe somebody will do an Option book on the Build/Repair rules I've always wanted. I've had so many players want to be macgyver, or pull a tony stark in a cave with a box of scraps, but the rules just aren't robust enough to allow it and I have to houserule an entire subsystem to accommodate their dreams of being junkyard masterminds. It'd be nice to have a book that actually covers that kind of thing, even if its optional.

Right now, I know the plan is to not need to.  I wasn't assigned the Magic chapter, or even Adepts in particular, but the guy who was was nice enough to let me pester him and look over his shoulder and make suggestions and stuff, so some stuff I wanted to see was already snuck in (like Adepts getting Mentor Spirit bonuses, combat Improved Ability not costing twice as much as other Improved Ability, and a few other things).

So, yeah.  I mean, the plan right now -- not that I'm sure this wasn't also the plan in prior editions -- is to just not screw up, so that Adepts don't need a splat book to tweak prices and try to rebalance them.

I find this amusing. You seem to think this 'Street Grimoire' is coming. It is not an upcoming product, though.

It's listed in the JackPoint login page in Stolen Souls, which makes it a good indication that the book is coming sooner rather than later.

Exactly. The Upcoming Releases page is completely unreliable for charting what is getting released due to not getting regularly updated. Which as I recall, their SR4 site was unreliable in this regard as well (I don't think an entry for Dirty Tricks or Stormfront was EVER put on that section of the site). Need I recall that Boardroom Backstabs 3 was put on the Upcoming Releases page, and that one STILL isn't out?

While going by CGL's social media and the occasional blog post (which nowadays is mostly for their non-TRPG SR products) is hardly ideal, it's a better indicator of what is-isn't coming out.

Unless if you're saying that all those posts regarding R&G and Stolen Souls was completely coincidental and had no bearing at all on the timing of their releases.

Indeed, have a Mage Mechanic that would love something like that.

Glad I'm not the only one that thinks so! Maybe if enough people request advanced Build/Repair, Catalyst will take notice and decide its worth the effort to make? Hell, I'd be willing to write it myself for free.

Which Mara knows, but since Mara has an axe to grind against the unreliable website updates, we got that post.

Since it's unreliable, we depend on the facebook, tumblr and twitter to figure things out. That's how we know they're still working on Run Faster even though Street Grimoire is currently in active development.

It's variable, too many moving parts are still involved. If an artist manages to nail down a piece of art quickly it could mean there's a big gap in time. If it's their last piece they're contributing, and they saved their best for last, it could be a short gap.

Can always go to the main page blog, and go back to see when the Run & Gun art previews appeared, and then when the pdf was available, etc..  I mean, it's one book, so it might not be wholly accurate, but might give you a rough idea.

Title: Re: Updates on upcoming products?

Some say it's a Schrödinger Box, containing the completely errata'd and better defined copy of 5th Edition complete with glossary in a sealed box along with a tiny radioactive source and a monitor to detect it's radioactive decay which is in turn linked to a flask of concentrated acid which will be released onto the book should it detect any atomic decay.

This tome exists in a quantum state until the lucky buyer opens it to reveal whether they got the true SR5 Tome intact or just a pile of dissolving bits.

Do you dare to open the box? :P

Ooooooh.

For starters, just using it for it's intended purpose of teaching new players.

I love Shadowrun and its' setting, and I'd like to be able to be able to show the game off to as many of my friends and possible to get into the game. And I want to take all the tools I need to do so. Moreso since for whatever reason, Shadowrun doesn't really have much of a presence in the tabletop gaming scene here in Los Angeles.

(come to think of it: tabletop gaming doesn't have much of a presence at all here in Southern California when it comes to official events and cons. There's the token D&D and Pathfinder stuff at SDCC, but that's about it)

Well, the condensed rulebook would be nice to have to strip the rules down to their bare basics, but at a more advanced level then just the QSR. Having a series of adventures that are meant to be very basic kind of runs that ease new players into what Shadowrun is typically like. We even have the added bonus of individual missions for a single character to teach them the basics of how to play their archetypes. Also, spell and gear cards, official SR dice, and maps are also nice.

Now, I'll concede that the state that the Box Set was released in Digital form is far from perfect. As it was, there were some areas where you needed the core SR5 book to clarify on some things due to critical sections being missing. It's not completely broken and useless, but it could be way, WAY better.

As for the "Why can't you make this stuff yourself?" Thing is, is that the whole point of these kind of aids is to cut down on the amount of work that the GM has to make. I have very little time as is to properly chart every relevant table is in the core book, or making a my own gear cards. To have something already prepared for me before hand, and to give me one less thing to worry about when preparing for a session, I have a hard time seeing how that could ever be a bad thing.

(unless if the game aids don't work as intended, which is a different matter entirely)

Street Grimoire got priority over Matrix and Rigger books? Ugh...

Not that I don't appreciate new content, but magic was the area that needed the least attention under core rules... Fingers crossed, I guess.
Title: Re: Updates on upcoming products?

While I don't disagree that there are things that are desperately in need of scrapping and wholesale rewriting with the Matrix, and we need vehicle modification rules bad, the magic book is good to have, especially for increasing the number of traditions, metamagics, new spells (hopefully with a guide to making custom spells like there was in Street Magic), and so on.

Unfortunately, it's not always an issue of "what needs the most attention" but "what has the most demand from players".

Wasn't there a chunk of Stolen Souls that explained how CFD and possession spirits don't play nice together? I imagine CFD wouldn't do anything to a Flesh Form, same way vampires and ghouls appear to be immune to it.

For possession/merge type spirits, like Bugs, I imagine that they don't do much.  Keep in mind that the spirit takes over completely, but if it's a good merge it can access the hosts memories.  So at worst, it just means if CFD messes with the memories of the host, the bug can access those memories.  Not that it will make much difference one way or another to the bug.

Hrmm...  Maybe Bugs and Vampires and Ghouls will be the savior of humanity from CFD?
