Title: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: gilga on <11-18-18/0414:01>
The next chapter will be approximately two weeks after the first one. So no need to pay rent/interest of debt just yet, but debt is still serious as we do have serious jobs all the time.

Please post here your updated characters, and spend the karma with whatever you think was reasonable to accomplish within two weeks. As for rewards we get: 32k split 4 ways which are 8k each, and a used Dodge Xenon. We need to decide what to do with the Dodge - keep or sell.

For Sell: It is worth 18k new, so 25-50% of the sticker price for selling it used. (does that make sense?

AM would suggest us keeping it, and using it as a secondary car in case we need to split up. She would argue that we can always sell it later if we're short on cash and must repay the debt.

He raises his hands briefly.  "Yes, fine.  32,000 nuyen, and a used Dodge Xenon - paid upon delivery of my son, reasonably unharmed.  I know that these groups, these... Halloweeners, are not gentle men.  I know..." He looks away and massages the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger.  "I know they may have already hurt him.  He may be scraped and bruised.  They may have taken that ridiculous hand of his...  But I expect him to be protected, and delivered in a condition no worse than when you find him."

Background:

Recruiting Interview with Specialist Robert Walker:
Son of War Shaman Yanni "Dark Crow" Walker and Environmental Engineer Elisabeth Miller (official resident).
Born August 12th 2051 in Cheyenne.
Developed strong physical magical talent during highschool, was recruited into Sioux Defense Forces at age 17, recommended for special training at 18. Completed tour of duty at [Classified] and [Classified], talent for infiltration and scout duties. Recommended for special operations, recommendation rescinded due to disciplinary problems.
Barred from further promotions, honorable discharge in 2073. Assessment by Shaman Bill Whitewater indicates severe totemic influence over personality and/or corrupted totem (Hunger/Wendigo classification).
Self employed tourist guide, private detective and suspected mercenary work.
Currently in debted to the Tiošpaye.

Assessment: Ready for recruitment

Cpt. Razak: Mr. Walker, how are you? It's been a while since we met.
Robert Walker: Yeah, long time no see... Could be better, could be worse. Anyone still alive from the 16th?
CR: The 16th never dies - though no, no-one you'd know is still around. I heard you had some trouble recently? Something about a lost consignment for the extended Family?
RW: You looking for trouble? Cause asking stuff like that is a quick way to getting digested by coyotes. I've got nothing to do with those assholes since Charlie took over.
CR: Fair enough. But you are still looking for gainful employment, aren't you? See kid, I always had a week spot for you and your abilities. A real shame that those pencil pushers couldn't overlook that little scuffle you had with Seargent What's-his-name.
RW: Ha. Asshole deserved it.
CR: Well, maybe you didn't have to turn into a Chimpanzee, knock him out and throw your own feces at him.
RW: Didn't have to - wanted.
CR: *Sigh* - Just for your information, it took me considerable effort to prevent them from just throwing you into prison and losing the key. The honorable discharge was the best I could do for you.
RW: And my eternal gratitude it has ensured. What do you want? I've got a child's birthday party to entertain and need to get into character soon.
CR: How would you like to work for a real PI agency? In Seattle. A regular income, no troubles with the NAN authorities, interesting jobs and a new start?
RW: Yeah - what's the catch?
CR: From time to time you'd be approached by someone who gives you a job you can't refuse - still payed of course.
RW: So black ops on forreign soil? Eh, what the hell, I'm in. At least it can't be as boring as the shit I do right here...

So I know I keep waffling, but if it's not too late, and if you guys feel comfortably giving me a shot as a player for a while, I did manage to get a few nascent concepts brewing that might fit in.

So first, would you guys be okay with giving me a chance.

Second, I have a few concepts I'd be happy to work with (I've always had to GM shadowrun since college - haven't been a player in a game in like ten years, so I'd be happy to build any of them based on what you think would be coolest/most fitting for the team).  So here are a few ideas I've got that I could continue to flesh out based on what you think would be best.

Huckster/gunslinger hybrid.  Might go for a phys adept if I feel I can fit it in.  This character would buy into the Sioux image but not so much the culture, and probably be a little bit of a biker.  Long hair and leather, motorcycle chaps and a duster.  Kind of a modern cowboy, but the image is meant to mislead a little.  He'd be the kind of guy who'd try to draw someone's attention to his hand resting on his Ruger when he's actually planning to use a derringer hidden up his sleeve, and very much gets off on conning people.  Probably a bit of a narcissist complex.  He's into the shadows for the thrill of the lifestyle more than the money.

Also think a mage of the chaos tradition could be fun.  He'd be more of a mage/conman, but the overall mindset of the character would be similar to the one above.  Loves life at the street level, because he feels that's where life is really lived, and want to feel the hearbeat of the city.

Or I could make them a hacker, definitely with the "Like a Boss" code of honor.  This version would probably be a former Neo-A and have a fairly strong anti-corporate bent, and would probably have a poster of Daniel Coleman up on the wall of his room.

I had also been thinking of tweaking any of the above ideas to make them older.  Like over-the-hill older, and recently released from prison on some kind of a favor (paperwork says they died in prison, and now they owe someone for that favor).  Did some running back in the 50s and 60s, but is now a little out-of-touch with the world today, and still getting used to everything being wireless.

In any case, now that Thanksgiving break is launching, all I have to worry about over the next four days is reading like a quarter of a short novel per day, so I've got space to breathe and get back into the headspace, and I'm picking up an eighth of inspiration tonight, which I've always found is great for springboarding a new character.

Ah, also @Gilgia -- did you want me to send you some notes on what was going on behind the scenes plot-wise?

I'll be happy to have you, but I expect more commitment than what you showed as a GM, you can't just disappear for weeks.

and yes I'll be happy to get what notes you have and see if I can build around them.

@Tecumseh from looking at your charsheet you seem to have paid twice for palming (so you should probably get 1 additional karma).
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: Tecumseh on <11-20-18/1506:54>
@gigla
Wow, sharp eyes. I'm impressed you caught that.

One of those instances of "Palming" should say "Armorer". The karma spent is correct, but what I spent it on was wrong.

I didn't explicitly state it but the purchased specializations break my Close Combat skill group into the individual skills.

I already have the team's Ford Americar on my sheet. Should I put the Dodge Xenon on my sheet too?

Mato would agree with AM that there's no advantage to selling it now. The only concern is that our shared lifestyle on has a garage for one car, not for two. We can park it elsewhere, as leaving it on the streets of Redmond is probably a bad idea.
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: Beta on <11-20-18/1718:04>
I'm not around my books, what is the cost of a garage?  I'm willing to see it added to our monthly total, if others are.
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: Tecumseh on <11-20-18/1726:09>
The out-of-pocket cost is minimal: ¥100/month for a car the size of the Xenon. The bigger issue is Point Cost, as we spent all of ours. We only get 4 for a Middle lifestyle and this is how we spent them:

• 1 into Security (making it 4).
• 1 point into Grid Subscription so that we're not always on the public grid
• 2 remaining points into Garage, which covers a vehicle rating Body 5 or higher

So we don't have any points leftover for a second garage. With GM approval I suppose we could rent a spot in someone else's garage. We could even toss a bug-out bag in the trunk and leave it somewhere else entirely, as a mobile bolthole of sorts. I imagine ¥100-150 per month would find us a semi-reputable parking spot.

As the GM I approve...;) I like the theme of having a spare car with a bugout bag in case of emergency.

Okay, I placed some IC up to give us some time to work on our characters. I'll wait for Lorebane to finalize his characters before the team gets a job (or think about another opportunity to introduce him if he is late). Feel free to RP the last week; I assumed the team would be laying low trying not to have the agency torched by angry haloweeners. If I am off - and your character would do something other than lay low - it is also fine.

So I had an idea for a character but it looks like it might have a lil too much overlap.  I think I'll rule out a spellcaster of any type, so I'm looking at an adept/face, a hacker, or a conjurer/face at this point.  What do you guys think would round out the party the best?
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: Tecumseh on <11-21-18/1423:47>
If you like the social back-and-forth then I'd lean toward one of the face options. As for conjurer vs. adept, do you want to do your dirty work or do you want spirits to do it for you?

Alternatively, you can make a pretty bitching disguise/infiltration face with adept powers. Facial Sculpt + Body Sculpt + Keratin Control + Melanin Control + Voice Control. Elf for Agility and Charisma. Maybe carve out some points to do something useful in a fight.

Skills - A (need both Influence and Acting skill groups)
Magic - B
Attributes - C
Metatype - D
Resources - E + In Debt

Or drop Skills to B and raise Attributes to B.

Use your 25 karma from Chapter 1 to buy Edge up to 3 to get yourself out of sticky situations.

@Lorebane:

I wouldn't say that magic is covered in nearly as much depth as you may think.
- Bobby has only one spell (albeit a powerful and flexible one)
- Jawsey is only good on the astral, the rest of his magical ability is near negligible at this point
- AM is a good spellcaster, but is aspected (so no spirits, etc), and has a somewhat focused list of spells at present:
Fling (Limited)          DV: F-4
Growth (Limited)         DV: F+1
Heal                     DV: F-4
Increase [Attribute] (INT)DV: F-3
Increase [Attribute] (LOG)DV: F-3
Increase [Attribute] (CHA)DV: F-3
Influence (Limited)      DV: F-3
Levitate                 DV: F-2
Makeover                 DV: F-3
Watcher                  DV: Special

AND Gilga is running this next section show AM won't really be around, and I'm hoping to pick up the following one so Jawsey won't be around in that one.

Besides which, in SR5 "we have too much magic" is not something you hear very often!  I think you could easily have a spellcaster who doesn't overlap AM much (and don't worry about overlapping Jawsey's magic).  Someone strong in illusion or detection magic, for example, would be really useful and quite different from what AM is about.

For the sort of group that we are, I have no objections to more social skills, but we may actually have more coverage there than with magic (Jawsey is reasonably strong, AM isn't far behind).  But neither of of the 'master of a 1000 faces' type that many more dedicated faces go for.  So that social adept that Tecumseh mentioned could be pretty cool too.

The only one with any real hacking skills is AM, but if you don't know the matrix stuff too well, that would not be a good call when you are busy.  (but there may well be an interesting technomancer/face build if you are more comfortable with the matrix).

****************************************************

Unrelated question:  Can you get the rating of a focus increased (for the incremental karma and nuyen cost), or do you need to have it done from scratch?

(I hadn't thought about background count when I bought the rating 1 focus in character creation --> I need to upgrade Jawsey's weapon focus to make his shtick more consistent --> I realized that I wasn't sure of the answer to this question)

A very minor note that I changed one of Jawsey's contacts (which had not been used to date).  Changed from Mafia to Vory (and changed his name in the process).  I thought I'd done that earlier, but apparently had only thought about it.

It just made more sense, his family had dealt with Russian smugglers since he was a child, almost certainly his father had ended up doing work for the Vory when in Seattle, and the contact passed down.  This would be the contact to whom Jawsey owes his debt.
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: Lorebane24 on <11-21-18/1813:07>
I may go ahead and put together a version of him to see how it pans out, then.  The plan is for him to be a full mage (or maybe a sorcerer who uses deep weed to percieve, so Jawsey can remain the primier astral scout) that focuses on utility and debuff type illusions and manipulations over combat spells or buffs.  I was thinking he'd only have one type of spirit that he could use to sustain illussion spells.

So here's where I'm at with him right now.  He's very much shaping up to be a dedicated mage that uses magic for misdirection and deception.  Priorities are A(Magic), B(Attributes), B(Skills), E(Race), and E(Resources).  Spent 13 karma (assuming the 25 from after that run) to iniatiate and got the psychometry metagmagic, and 10 has been converted to nuyen.  Still need to do gear and positive/negative qualities, and knowledge skills and contacts, but I wanted to show what I've got so far in case anyone notices any glaring errors.

I was also thinking about going with alchemy instead of spellcasting.  Some of my spell selections would be different but it might be cool.
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2

I played an alchemist for a couple years and found it to be a big hassle of bookkeeping. In my opinion it needs a lot of house rules to make it viable/enjoyable. It's a fussy system and perhaps not the best if you're going to occasionally have time concerns.

You might be under on skills. You should have 46 individual skill points (36 from Skills B and 10 from Magic A) but I only count 41.

Spells are pretty good but I'd recommend Trid Phantasm over Phantasm, and the Extended version of Spatial Sense (awesome spell). I've never played with Area Thought Recognition. I'd spend 10 karma on another 2 spells if you have it to spare. Nothing expands a magician's toolbox like more spells. Heal would be a personal request.

Note that your Physical Limit is 3 due to your low Body and Strength scores, so your hits on Sneaking and Palming tests will be pretty low unless you boost them somehow, like with a chameleon suit. If I were you, I'd raid 2 attribute points out of Logic and buy it back up to 2 with 10 karma. Then drop 1 point into Body (not only boosting your Physical Limit but also giving you an extra box on the Physical condition monitor) and another in Willpower for drain purposes (and an extra box on the Stun condition monitor to boot). If you have another 10 karma to spare, repeat the process with Strength (dropping to 1 then buying back up to 2 with karma) to get your Charisma to 5.

Say 25 karma from chargen and 25 karma from chapter 1:

Initiation (13) +
Nuyen (10) +
Logic 2 (10) +
Strength 2 (10) +
Heal (5) =
48 karma

That's pretty solid, and you can get more from Negative Qualities if there are other gaps you want to fill. Buying and bonding a power focus, for example.

So I've been tinkering with it a bit and here's where I'm at now.  Does this look any better?
Spent 10 karma of the initial 25 to raise str from 1 to 2, and I think the rest went into qualities.  25 post-creation was used for initiation (13) and to pick up 2 ranks each in survival and computers (12).  Still have to do knowledge skills and contacts, and got a smidge more nuyen to play with, so I'm going to browse run and gun and cutting aces to see if there's any cool gear.

@Lorebane
What's Decrease Intuition for?

I might diversify some ammo types, especially for the Lightfire, but that's up to you.

@gilga
I interpret the dice pool modifier for Mato's Essence to be -5 instead of -6 ("rounded up" moving the modifier from -5.96 to -5) but you're in the driver's seat as GM.
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: gilga on <11-24-18/1318:49>
I read in the wiki that essence loss penalty:

Low-Essence characters are more difficult to affect with some health spells. It’s hard to put the body back into its natural state when that state has been unnaturally altered. In game terms, this means you take a dice pool modifier equal to the target’s actual Essence minus his maximum Essence (which will turn out to be 0 or a negative number), rounded up.

so your actual essence 0.04 - maximum essence  -5.94  rounded up = -5.  I got confused since rounding up a negative number is not what I thought it was.  ;)  so -5 yes you are right.

Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: Lorebane24 on <11-24-18/1513:09>
I guess one thing I wanted to ask is how "obvious" decrease intuation is.  Ideally, I figured it could make someone easier to lie to if it could be cast discretely.  Otherwise, it's either to lower initiative or to try and temporarily knock someone out reducing their intuition to 0.
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: gilga on <11-24-18/1515:04>
The treshold to notice spellcraft depends on your skill and the force, so it is pretty easy considering that you'll need reasonable force and only has 5 points of skill. However, it is stealthy in the sense that it does not make a noise, alert security and so forth.

So the person you do it too would likely know about it, but it can disable a person easily. Especially if you get to touch them without them resisting.

Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: Tecumseh on <11-25-18/1806:37>
@Lorebane
The primary concern around Decrease [Attribute] is that it's a touch spell.

If you're using it offensively, then it means you're in melee range, which probably isn't ideal.

If you're using it covertly, then you can probably only cast at F2 (or F3 at the most) without being noticed. The average defense pool will be ~6 dice, so the defender can average two hits and negate an F2 spell entirely. Similarly, if they roll 2 hits vs. 3 hits on an F3 spell then you've traded a -2 sustaining penalty (although you do have Focused Concentration to sustain it) for a -1 negative modifier to the target. Not the most productive trade. Probably the best way to use it is to break the limit using Edge or reagents, which would allow you to keep as many hits as you roll while making the casting as subtle as possible.

Alright, I'll take a closer look and see if I can't move a few things around to get it down a few points, but it seems like dealing with aggressive debtors or scrambling to get some scratch together could lead to some fun shenanigans too.  In the mean time here is Takoda Miller, AKA Ginsburg.

Takoda Miller was born in Cheyenne in 2028, when the Sioux Nation was relatively young and finding its feet.  From a young age, he had a fiercely independent streak, and despite it being all around him, he didn't mesh particularly well with traditional Sioux Culture.  The East might be the enemies, but they wrote better shows, produced better music, and, at the time, were miles ahead on tech.  He made friends quickly and lost them just as fast when you couldn't stop himself from playing them to one end or another.  When he awakened as a teenager, none of the local shamans wanted to take him under their tutelage, save one.  Ehawee, an aging coyote shaman, saw potential in his propensity for mischief and his willingness to defy established norms.  She started teaching him the basics, and Takoda grudgingly complied, because hey, magic is wiz.

But it didn't come easily.  It was years before he could channel even the most basic of spells.  Spirits did not speak to him, and on his vision quest all he did was get high.  Coyote proved to be an elusive mentor.  His frustration growing and the pool of people he hadn't conned, lied to, or taken advantage of shrinking, he decided that his path must lay elsewhere.  Maybe the hermitic tradition would make more sense.  He just barely managed to get himself admitted to a college in Denver, but that came with fresh distractions and new frustrations.  While the shamanic tradition made little sense to him, the hermetic one was horribly rigid, and he grew bored quickly, finding thrills on the streets.  Shadowrunners had been coming into vogue, and he was captivated by their portrayal in the trids.  He'd always kept at least a toe or two outside of the law, and started putting out feelers, getting his name out, and eventually was able to hook up with some rookie teams and pull of some minor scores in Denver.  It was then that everything started to click for him.

He had never felt in tune with nature, but here, in Denver, he could feel the heartbeat of the city.  He had no mentor totem because he connected most closely with the works of his fellow man.  The structures and strictures of the Sixth World began to fascinate him.  He saw the city as a new and unexplored ecosystem, filled with moving parts, complexities, and hierarchies, and no one saw the whole picture - the city was the next great wilderness to explore.  He changed the focus of his studies, diving into human psychology and sociology, and started picking up tips and tricks from other mages during his occasional moonlighting as a rookie runner.  To him, this is what made the most sense - take the best of every tradition - use what makes sense to you, because that blend is what makes the civilized world so interesting.

The search for meaning and truth on the streets became his greatest drive.  He was already struggling in his courses - not the brightest student, but perhaps not the dumbest.  He learned best by watching and by doing, not through rigorous study, and when he decided he'd learned what he could, he moved again, this time to Seattle - an island of a civilization, cut off from its parent country, this was the new Wild West.  He took the street name Ginsburg, after his favorite poet, and began working the Seattle shadows, taking the jobs he could, learning what he could, and trying to find ways to connect everything.

This kept up for several years, but then in 69 he was unfortunate enough to be on a run during the Crash.  Things went south - badly.  He was picked up and tossed in a cell, where he spent the last 12 years.  He tried to escape twice, but both attempts ended in failure, and he knew a third try would likely mean his death unless it was perfectly executed.  He waited, he watched, and he looked for his opportunity, but it never came.

But them something better happened.  A couple weeks ago, someone slipped a note under his cell.  "Start a fight" was all it said.  Though suspicious, he had a feeling about this, and decided to trust his gut.  The next day in the cantina, he sucker punched someone in the line over some fabricated bullshit and the guards quickly intervened.  They beat him to within an inch of his life.  But there as that inch left.  The warden came to see him in the infirmary the following week and sent the medical staff away.  "Someone likes you," he said as he presented him with a death certificate bearing his name.
"Legally, you're dead.  So tomorrow you shuffle your corpse out of here, get yourself to Puyallup.  There's a squat waiting for you with some things that will be to your liking, but it ain't free.  Someone will be in touch with you soon about paying off your blank slate."

Does that work?
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: Tecumseh on <11-27-18/1733:01>
Looks pretty solid to me. I like the explanation around his magical tradition.

What year are we playing in? I'm just wondering about the 2069 + 12 years in prison. I looked through the old threads but couldn't find anything that said one way or another. Lorebane made an off-hand mention of 2080 at one point, but that was referring to a product rather than a specific event or timeline.

I'm not sure if there's something specific about Puyallup, but the Hollywood Correctional Facility is in Redmond. If Ginsburg gets discharged from there, it would be relatively easy (geographically, at least) for him to cross paths with the rest of the team.

I imagine a mage must spend most of their time in a mage mask and mage cuffs. That must make prison even worse. Or maybe they don't use those due to budget constraints, so you're free to astrally project as long as you're comfortable leaving your body defenseless. Hmm, interesting story ideas there.

Maybe Poetry as a knowledge skill?

Yeah, I'm tinkering with him now and I plan to move some of the points in his knowledge skill to get 1 or 2 ranks with a specialization in American poetry.

I guess my count was a little off, as far is his prison term, but I like the idea of having an older guy who was recently released and is trying to adapt to how the shadows have changed since he was last active.

Corrected my last IC post. I wrote "are" when I meant "aren't", which of course changes the entire meaning of the sentence. Hopefully that fixes any confusion.

Anyway, sounds like we're ready to write Ginsburg into the story.

My IC about the pizzas is a bit out of sequence now, because I was slow getting it up.  Started it yesterday then got distracted.

I'm going to knock a couple hundred nuyen off Jawsey's total, and add a 200nY/month lifestyle expense for 'pizza brigade' which is basically him laying groundwork for turning them into a contact of some sort in the future.  Anyway, between the simulated battle, some visible magic, and some free food, hopefully the kids will be talking about us.

In that case I'll let Jawsi add "The Pistons" as a group contact, connection 1 loyalty 3. Perhaps not right now as it would take some time to build the relationship but for the next story.

Sorry, I'd thought that the kids watching were younger than ganger age (although no doubt already aspiring to join when they got big enough).  And yes, I was relying on Jawsey's charisma to get them to cooperate -- the reason I'd not posted the first day I'd written it was that I felt it needed more about how he coaxed them to come carry stuff, but on the second day I decided better to get it up half-assed than not at all.

They are not a 'gang gang' but lone kids are easier prey, they form gangs or packs since they are perhaps six or seven... the leaders are slight olders. At least this is what I had in mind.

Aight, so Gilga has invited me to do the posting for Gao so I can put my own spin on him, and I'm just waiting till we can finalize some details before we do so, but I wanted to check with everyone to see if they'd be too uncomfortable with the more unsavory tendencies I had in mind for him.

His comedic shtick, or the one I had planned for him, is that he is EXTREMELY racist, and tosses slurs around constantly, but he also always misuses them.  Example:  A black dwarf comes into his shop and he gets uppity.  "Out, OUT!  I don't deal with fraggin' keebs!  Haha, no, no, I joke - I know you're no keep.  Get on in here you crazy gook."

Would this make any of you guys uncomfortable?
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: Tecumseh on <11-30-18/1820:40>
I'm cool with Shadowrun metatype slurs.

Ever since the early editions to fluff has been that ethnic stereotypes are a thing of the past because, in the words of the 2nd Edition sourcebook, who cares what color that guy's skin is when that thing over there has hands the size of your head? So in that sense, ethnic slurs are rare in the Sixth World.

But if Gao is the type to double-down on his racism, then so be it. I might check the site's Terms & Conditions, or check with an admin, before letting Gao loose though.

I'm assuming what happens is that AM is busy, but the other three make it there (including 'orc' and 'bear', although Bobby can come in human form, I'm sure).

I'm willing for Gilga or any of the other players to frame us into the meet.

Do we want to have a conversation about the stability (or lack thereof) of the official forums and whether we'd like to move the game to a different location, like RPOL or RPG Playroom?

I'll have her doing some work for her creditors. She'll be partly available for matrix support if you need her.
I moved you to the shop, feel free to roll a knowledge check to figure out which gangs do this kind of graffiti. (if you care enough).

RPG Playroom would get my vote - mainly because nearly all of us are already registered there.

I'd also prefer RPGPlayroom.

I'm fine with moving it.

A quick note that Jawsey is human looking (the surgeon who reconstructed his face a couple of years back maybe wasn't a big elf fan?  At any rate his ears look human, and he isn't quite as tall, thin, or smooth moving as most elves).  That said, Gao likely knows, I figure your talismonger is only just behind your doctor in needing to know details about you.

Post by: Tecumseh on <12-07-18/1543:13>
I'm a bit confused and wanted to clarify. Here's what I'm getting from the IC thread:

Party A - the seller of the card
Party B - Amanda Green, Gau's client, who wants the card
Party C - Gau, who sounds like he's acting as a middleman between Party A and Party B
Party D - the party that wants the card, has threatened Gau, and intends to meet with Party A to buy the card in Gau's place
Party E - the PCs, who are being hired to ensure that the party A sells to us/Gau so that Gau can sell to Party B/ Amanda Green

It sounds like Gau is giving us 15K to purchase the card from Party A and ensure that Party D doesn't interfere, so that Gau can sell the card to Party B/Amanda. That's my interpretation of the situation. If that's correct, that means we haven't negotiated our agency's fee for our services yet. Am I tracking things accurately?
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: gilga on <12-07-18/1554:59>
Yes you are correct:

Gau wants you to acquire the card and give it to A.

Gau did not discuss compensation yet, you get the money to get the card.  Though, you can, of course, try to get paid more, by keeping the 15k, and robbing D after the sell.
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: Beta on <12-07-18/1651:28>
I posted IC before reading the posts above.  I was also a bit confused by Gao dancing around the topic of how we get paid, so Jawsey made his own proposal ;-)   (I don't expect it to play out that way, but it seemed like "we make all the profit" was a good opening bid)
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: Tecumseh on <12-07-18/1704:28>
Latest IC post makes it sound like Gau is buying the card for 15K and selling it for 10K. Is that correct? I suppose Gau could be trying to curry favor with Amanda Green by selling it to her at below-market rates.

Edit: Looks like gilga edited the post so that we're selling to Amanda for 25k and keeping the 10k difference for ourselves.

It seems like part of the assumption for our payment is that we relieve Party D of the 15K that they bring with them to the meet with Party A.

Post by: gilga on <12-07-18/1710:29>
Yes, I edited it. Sorry, a brain fart. Selling it for 25k, and the 10k profit is yours to keep.

Post by: Beta on <12-07-18/1724:35>
btw, just tryin to role-play the negotiations a bit, but willing to speed things along soon.  I see Jawsey less as the hard edged, demanding, negotiator, and more the kind who just tries to make his point of view seem so reasonable that it is hard to disagree with it.
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: gilga on <12-08-18/1207:57>
I believe it is time to roll negotiation.  If I understand, correctly you are four as AM is on an errand.  So the current offer is 2.5k per person, with an option for 3.75k per person if you rob the buyer from the card, or prevent him from getting to the meet.

Gao has 3 hits - you need to score more than that to sweeten the deal. Whereas Bobby suggested, the additional pay can be talismonger goods.

Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: Beta on <12-10-18/1646:55>
@Tecumseh @Jack_Spade In the name of getting things moving, I'm inclined to have Jawsey basically take the offer,, even if I don't like it (and Jawsey certainly doesn't like it)  The offer assumes that:
a) the other side in all of this is bringing money to buy the card, rather than just planning on stealing it, and
b) that we'll be able to keep the other side's bagman from escaping with the money.

However the group is a little desperate for work, and I'm sure we all want to get on to more exciting things.  So hopefully you guys are OK with a final negotiate roll (any benefit probably showing up in goods from Gao's), and get on with it?  Otherwise we can push for an entirely different deal.  (in a face-to-face game I'd be more willing to push back more, but it sucks up so much time in PbP).

ETA: negotiate roll:
neg with Gao (http://orokos.com/roll/684131): 13d6t5 4

@Lorebane: Ginsburg will have to speak for himself on taking the offer.  Although if he has negotiate he could either try to neg his own side sweetener, or teamwork with Jawsey.
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: Tecumseh on <12-10-18/1715:31>
You're the face; you can negotiate for as much or as little as you want. I just thought that a discount or some free goods might be a way to sweeten the pot without breaking Gao's bank. Mato isn't going to benefit from it either way so he's fine if you want to accept the deal as-is, it's just not what he would expect the face to do.
Title: Re: The Found Arcana Chapter 2
Post by: Beta on <12-10-18/1806:19>
Yah, first time that I've played a Face in a remotely normal game.  I'm finding myself at "As a Face, Jawsey should be pushing for more, and I should be playing out this negotiation" versus "Can we just get a move on? This doesn't involve anyone else and it turns out Negotiations don't really interest me much either."
