Athos sighs.  "You and I are friends.  Yulia and I are friends.  What you and Yulia are defies description, but I do not think it is friends.  Friendly antagonists, maybe?"  He shoots a look over at the Humanis thugs sitting at the bar before adding, Nah.  Only the five of them.  Hardly break a sweat on that many.  I am having the usual."

Thinking about apple juice and also the distraction of the curious colorful jar across the room helped Yulia ignore Artee’s protest to Athos.  She hadn’t expected any different anyway.

“Soyham and green peppers omelet,” she answered the cat simply.  “You can get them to use real eggs on request.”  She then stole a glance at the Humanist grouping, but averted her eyes quickly when they meet a leer.  “As for my fan club over there, maybe I should slip out on my own when we’re done.  I can lose them in my sleep and that way you and oniichan can walk out with no drama.  We can meet up again outside Jake’s and drive on from there?”

Jake’s was a nearby dive that had the best fried catfish in the sprawl.  It was far less formal than Gino’s but the food, in its own way, was just as classy.  It would also be very, very closed right now and unlikely to have any Humanis pricks around.

Athos looks at Minnie.  "I am sure that they can toss in real eggs for us this morning.  Remember that you have to ask special for them.  And those punks?  Just ignore them.  We can decide on what to do when we get ready to leave.  I think they are just jealous that I am sitting here with the two best looking women in town."

She nods at Minnie's choice.  "Sounds... good," she shrugged.  "And whatever it is, I hope you're right about those guys.  For their sake."

She made her own selections and pushed her own order through her AR.  Fish sticks omelette.  Let the others judge if they wished.

"So, what's the deal, Athos?"

Since she already knew what was going down with Athos and lunch, and her curiosity was getting the better of her, she decided to slip over to the bar and look more closely at the candy jar.  She planned to cover her action with some harmless flirting with the lone bartender who, it being breakfast, was being called upon to mix only an occasional Bloody Mary and pour the rare glass of breakfast bubbly.  She had talked previously with the boy, him being only a few years older than she and new to the job.  She kept her toying with the boy's heart to a minimum given she wasn't yet able to see sex with men as anything but a rather unpleasant job, but his innocence was refreshing and someday...well who knew.  Anyway, the jar wasn't explaining itself and she wanted to get to the bottom of it.  Was she just seeing things or was there something to it?

She gave the Humanis crowd some distance but the imp in her couldn't help but sashay a bit with her tail swishing hypnotically side to side opposite the motion of her hips.

Artie watched the mouse get up and strut over to the bartender.  Her gaze flicked over to the Humanis boys and to some of the other customers leering at the young girl.

She arched an eyebrow and looked sideways at Athos.  "Calculated, y'know, what she's doing."  She shrugged again and kicked one leg out to take advantage of the vacated booth space as she leaned back against the window.  Her posture was relaxed but she never stopped scanning for threats.  For the most part, her gaze alternated between Minnie and the humans fellows.

Athos might not see and the little mouse would never allow herself to see it, but Artie would watch both of their backs the way she expected them to watch hers.  Maybe Minnie would, maybe she wouldn't, but let Artie drop her and there would never be trust between them.  They didn't have to like each other, but Athos was right... he was a lynchpin that they both cared enough about to set aside their differences.

Well... to a point.  The mouse was an easy target for Artie's teasing and it was just in her nature to take advantage of that.  Artie might not be so physically similar to her totem as Minnie was, but there was a reason Cat chose her.

@Minnie "Yulia right?" said the bartender... "what can I do you for?" his eyes light up when he sees the familiar face.

Yulia settled herself down on the stool nearest the candy jar that had caught her eye a few minutes earlier.  She positioned her face so that she peered over the top of the jar as she gazed at the bartender.  Her smile was refracted in the glass in the space between the lid and the top of the pile of multicolored candy inside.  The effect was coquettish, playful but never crossing to seductive.   She alternated her eye focus between meeting the boy’s gaze and examining the contents of the glass container.  Even the act of regularly glancing down fit seamlessly into the flirting game.

“Just waiting for Claire to whip up my omelet, Jimmy,” she supplied to the freckle-faced, carrot-topped young human.  “In the meantime, Athos is talking business and I decided the fun was on this side of the place.  Was I right?”

As she vamped the young man while looking up, when looking down she examined the jar up close in all three worlds- mundane, matrix, and magic.

Athos nods to Yulia as she gets up and stroll to the bar.  Looking over to Artie, he says, "Just as calculated as your jabs at her.  You and I both know that you would not allow those Humanis punks to ness with her, so why do you taunt her so much?"  He raises his hands.  "I know, I know.  It is in your nature.  I guess I will just have to learn to accept that, no matter how much I want both of you to be friends."

Athos lets his voice get serious as he looks back at Artie.  He knows that the girl has eyes on Minnie and will alert him if something starts to go sideways.  "Here is the gig.  I got a call to eat lunch with Valentina at the Gates Casino today.  I do not expect trouble, but I would like another pair of eyes on the proceedings.  You have instincts that I do not and you might see things that I cannot.  How does 200 plus my picking up your lunch ticket sound?"

@Minnie,
Jimmy say..."no no the fun is slumming at the Skelton it is the hottest club in town. Live music, multiple stages amazing BTL's...  I want to go there... but none of my friends dare to go to the Barrens at night with all the creepy stuff that's happening recently... is there any chance that you can take me? You are the bravest girl I know. "  You are not sure if he is flirting with you or he really want to go to the Skelton.
To brake the awkward silence he nervously adds "Here you get the best juices in the country tough... can I fill your glass... it's free " He smiles and you can sense that his cheeks are red and he is really embarrassed because what he just said.

There is nothing unusual now about the candy's. In any of the world, yet you are certain that previously there was a subtle movement in there.

Artie winks at Athos, glossing over his criticism and diving into the offer.  "I like food," she said, in way of agreeing to help.  She looked up as the waitress brought over a glass of soy milk and her lip curled in disgust even as she took the glass and drank from it.

"So, chill out in the local vick and see if anything's fishy, sounds easy enough."

Her eyes weren't on Athos as she spoke, flicking mostly between Minnie and the punks in the back, with an occasional scan of the room.  "Ha, if you don't look out, Minnie'll have her hands full with Jimmy over there... not something she's looking for, I think."

Athos takes a casual glance to where Minnie and Jimmy are talking.  "I had him vetted right after Gino hired him.  Even talked to him a bit and he is OK.  He is sweet on Yulia, but he understands that I will snap his back if he hurts her.  Not worried about him and if she goes for it, it is OK by me.  So we are good for lunch?"

Yulia thanked Mouse for her quick reflexes and she schooled her reaction to the unexpected offer.  She absolutely did NOT want Jimmy sensing he’d actually flustered her.  For better or worse, she had a lot of experience not letting on to her true feelings in such ‘dealings of the heart.’  Not that it had anything to do with Yulia’s heart thanks to her lost childhood.

It had always been business for her, or if not business, then a game.  A game she always won.  She and the boy across the counter had played the flirting game a few times but this was the first time he’d actually asked her out.  With it out there, she honestly didn’t know what to do next.  Somehow, the boy had checked her king.

In every dealing with a man along these lines she’d ended up in bed with him on his terms.  She had zero experience just enjoying a night out with a boy, and less than a handful of such experiences with a girl.  Sure, she’d read hundreds of stories about such things, but it’d always seemed so far off.  Another world; usually literally given her tastes ran toward works from the 5th World.

Still, wasn’t it possible to just go out dancing?  She was too embarrassed to consider asking Athos for advice on the subject, and Nagisa would just get jealous.  She had no intention of betraying her girlfriend’s trust, but at the same time, unlike Nagisa, she liked boys too.

The time had dragged on and the poor boy was starting to nervously fill in the quiet.  She felt guilty now for apparently leading the boy on with what to her had been just innocent dallying.

“Um…how about cranberry juice?” she responded to his query.  She’d briefly considered asking for orange juice, but even if they had it the stuff was worth its weight in orichalcum.  Well maybe not quite, but it might be close.  At least cranberries, like apples, were grown in Shidhe territory.

As the boy moved to comply, she stalled for more time as her emotions roiled within her.  “Um, I don’t remember seeing this jar here before," she motioned to the colorful glass container now held between her AR gloved hands.  "Where’d the candy come from?”

Soon enough, the server is out of the kitchen.  The rolling cart is stacked with plates and platters of food.  Gino himself wanders out from the back he booth as the server unloads the cart.  A couple of plates are placed in front of Artie and Minnie's empty seat but the majority of the food on the cart goes in front of the Troll.  Athos smiles broadly and sniffs at the various aromas wafting from the food in front of him.  Gino comes up and nods.  "It is good to see my friends here.  Enjoy the food.  The veal cutlet is my special of the week; very nice."  He cocks his head to where Minnie is chatting with Jimmy.  "Is OK?  Jimmy is a good boy.  He would not do nothing to hurt our Yulia.  You know that."

Athos nods.  "It is fine with me, Gino.  You say he is good boy and I trust you.  Say, this looks good today.  Bono, Gino.  Molto bono.  Thank you very much."

The large Troll digs in with gusto and begins to wade through the small mountain of food as if he had not eaten in days, maybe weeks.
