Title: Vampires, Essence, & Mages! Oh my!
Post by: Qemuel on <11-03-10/2051:19>
:o I just realized that Essence Drain is permanent!  I don't know where I got the impression, but I was thinking that your essence returned over time as you healed.  I was about to start a topic asking how long it took for essence to heal when I realized it didn't!

That REALLY sucks for mages & technomancers since even though you can repair your essence loss through Revitalization, it will not repair the corresponding loss in Resonance or Magic (p. 89 Augmentation).

Has anyone had this happen in your games?  If so, how did the players handle it?

Not happened in one of mine but the idea of losing that much invested karma is a bitch.

Although on a similar note I did once send them in against ghouls and informed them that I wouldnt be fudging rolls for them being infected. It did add so fear into the mix.

Good news! If you got the cred, we got the cure*!

Quote from: Augmentation, p. 88-89
Revitalization
In game terms, revitalization regenerates the Essence “hole” left by the removal of an implant from the body. Revitalization is slow and Essence is restored by recurring gene therapy sessions at a rate of 0.1 Essence per month. Though Essence points lost to implantation, Energy Drain, and addiction may be restored through gene therapy, Magic/Resonance points lost are never returned and reductions to the maximum Magic/Resonance attribute remain in effect.

*Does not recover Essence lost from HMHVV II or HMHVV III strains. Some results may vary.

Seeing as mana domains can be aspected against certain magics, would it be possible to aspect an area against HMMVV seeing as it's partly magical? This could be the basis of those old wive's tails of vampires being unable to enter holy ground. :)

No, it screws pretty much everyone.  Hardcore Street Sammies lose out on their "resource" (which they only had 6 points of, to begin with), or outright die.  Mages and Adepts get burned and lose power, likewise Technomancers.

Everyone gets hosed if you let the Vampire get'cha.   ;D

That's a great way to introduce extra fear into a horror scene. It can be hard to give players butterflies unless they can lose something like Essence. That's huge. Everybody needs all they can get.

For sure!  Just this one fact would make me EXTREMELY cautious as a player.  As a GM, I think I'll wait awhile before throwing a Vampire at them...
Fear.  Loss.  No recovery.
This ain't D&D!

Vampires suck :D

I never noticed that before... This really makes them scary once they get their hands on you.

It's only really an issue if they ko the entire party except 1 or if they manage to capture one of the party.  Essence drain can't be performed on a resisting subject and the timeframe involved is way too long to be an issue in combat even if they could.

In combat?  Yeah, not a huge issue given the timeframe involved.  It can, however, effectively shut down a combat as the vamp in question can just grapple the target and make him/her unresisting.  Not to mention the potential for instant addiction when they bite you.  Seriously, the victim can get addicted to being drained.
