I've been a little curious as to what really happened to Captain Chaos that FastJack alluded to in SR4 Corebook?
Emerged (I think that is right) had him trapped in the Net or killed in Crash 2.0. Killed I think.
-
In Emergence, there's a story that shows that when the Jormungand virus hit the Denver Data Haven, it wiped the encryption from the JackBNimble program that Dunkelzahn had willed to him. The program then 'saved' Cap's consciousness to the memory in his deck, but was unclear if he was still there or not.
-
It starts when "Big D" leaves Captain Chaos an file called JackBNimble in his will saying that he isn't sure what it does, but he is sure that Cap can crack the code.
Well he never does, and then the events from "System Failure" take place and Captain Chaos goes "down with his ship" (referring to Shadowland) and dies as many also die when the matrix gets shut down due to a massive virus called Jormungand. Fastjack has an epic picture of him facing in in his sig. Anyways the virus shredded the encryption that JackBNimble was protected with and "saved" Captain Chaos. Is he alive? A file? No official reports yet. But I'm holding out hope that he remains with us, in some form anyways.

-
Apologies, Sir Jack, you are indeed fast.

I found a short story that was written by Robert Derie, it tells the story of Captains memorial service. I can't seem to find it at the moment, but I believe it was called "The Untethered Life. I think I found it on the DS forums. I'll see if I can find the link.
-Dodger
-
As I understand it, JackBNimble didn't save Cap to his deck, but to a storage place somewhere... along with a LOT of others. Cap was the only one conscious, though.
-
You are correct. JackBNimble said it had to leave as there were others to be saved. Then for Captain Chaos, there was nothing. No matrix, no grid, no cyberspace, just the empty blackness of data storage. - from System Failure
-Dodger
-
It ends with something said like the file is not fully intact and asks if it should save Y/N and nothing after that
-
The query is "Delete file Y/N"... and yeah, they leave us in the dark if its Y or N... oh the cruelty :(
-
Isn't there some reference in Runner Havens to him being some kind of Emerged bodhissatva somewhere?
-
AH did have a un official story which I am very fond of which has the good Cap come back as Kaos with the impression of being a E Ghost or somethign of the like.
Granted its unofficial and cant be used in the books but I did like it very much
-
Its good to see that the Captain still has fans.... I just hope that he's still with us......
Hopefully, he is still in datastorage or an E-ghost. Now my next question is is what is the impact of E-ghosts in the wake of the emergence of A.I.s as sapient beings?
-
There's two possibilities regarding Cap:
1) In Unwired, p 164, it's mentioned that Cap's been spotted in a DIMR (Dunkelzahn's Institute for Magical Research) Matrix node. This makes sense, since if he got out of JackBNimble's memory space, he'd head there to a) ask for help and b) help with their Matrix.
2) In Runner's Havens, p 28, The Whampoa in Kowloon City are said to be led by someone named "The Captain", who no one has ever seen in person. Now, the Whampoa is also said to have the largest number of Technomancers in Hong Kong, and if Cap is back, I'm sure his abilities are more in line with a TM than an ordinary Hacker anymore.
What's true? Whatever you want, omae. Me? I like to believe it's both. He's working with the DIMR to figure out how he came to be how he is AND he heads up a tribe of Hackers/Technomancers in Hong Kong, fighting the good fight and training the next generation.
-
Well seeing as in theory they buried him should he come back he should be an AI AND one of at the least some power.
-
I'd not make him an AI. There's already been established e-ghosts in the Matrix (Alice Haeffner), so just having him on the `trix should be enough. The designers shouldn't even need to stat him out.
-
Concerning Horrors... From what I recall from Earthdawn (correct if I'm wrong beloved chummers) they popped in once the Magic was too high. I figure that the same "Invasion" will happen sooner or later in the current Setting of Shadowrun. In the end what moves the true fabric of Earthdawn and Shadowrun is the Circle. They will come back *Scary Voice*
-
Yeah. There were mana spikes, like the one created by the Great Ghost Dance that made bridging the gap easier (Harlequin's Back/Dragonheart Saga novels), but they're being 'cleaned up' and the Horrors shouldn't appear for a few more centuries.
-

The scourge shouldn't, but some horrors already have.
If Ysrthgrathe succeded to pass, it can't be the only one. Not the most powerfull horrors however are here, since they really need more mana, but very clever ones. The one I'm waiting for, which I think will be the big deal this time, is Artificer. ;D
By the way, wasn't there a project of a new RPG based on the sixth world future ? or was it only a rumor ?

Some of the clever ones may have made it over by using the mana spikes, but those are being neutralized on the metaplanes, so any further Horrors getting over will be extremely rare OR with deliberate help from some on this side.
You may be thinking of the April Fool's project, BattleRun (http://www.battlecorps.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2259), combining BattleTech and Shadowrun in the Eight World... ;)
-
Maybe ^^ anyway, I always thought a RPG after the second scourge would be a great universe to play in. Too bad if it was only a joke.
-
Well, there's also CthulhuTech (http://www.cthulhutech.com/), put out by WildFire/Sandstorm Games. Mecha + Cthulhu = Win
-
He may also be thinking of eclipse phase.
-
OR, it might be RedBrick's Equinox (http://www.redbrick-limited.com/cms/index.php?categoryid=60)...
-
It might ^^
EDIT : after reading.
I'm dubitative about the setting. I hoped a post-apo setting, which could allow to simplify the world while keeping its major mechanics. Space op' on the other hand may make it more complex, and I'm not sure how magic and space op' will work together. But I think the same as been said about Shadowrun before its release. So w&s.
-
Yea. On the surface, Shadowrun shouldn't work. Magic and elves and dragons mixed in with dystopian future and technology run amok? No way it should work. But it did, and it is my FAVORITE RPG setting ever to walk down the lane.
-
Anything will work....you just have to put in a little imagination to make all the pieces stick together.
For more interesting or supposedly impossible to game worlds, read Gurps Infinite worlds for more info. Heck maybe in a GURPS Infinite worlds campaign, Shadowrun would be an alternate earth probably designated by Homeline as:
Merlin-4 Current Year 2030 AD. TL: 9. Mana level: normal/some places high. Great Powers(Japanese Empire CR 4 for Japanese home islands, 5 for occupied territories, 6 for Metahumans), Aztlan CR 5, UCAS CR 3). Infinity class: Z3. Centrum Zone: RED.
-
Oh yeah Homeline and Centrum Reactions:
Merlin-4(Shadowrun timeline) would actually be sealed off and under quarantine by Infinity and Centrum and labeled a dangerous timeline. However both sides probalby have spies who are trying to harvest the tech and magic(with little success as the computer tech homeline managed to procure from Merlin-4 does not work in line to natural laws in Homeline). Same too with Centrum.
Cabal probably has a presence in this timeline and but not Reich-4(god forbid).
-
I'm thinking the dragons and, most especially, the fact that it is a waypoint for the Horrors would make them leery of stepping foot there.
-
Actually I think its also revealing the secret(travelling from one timeline to another) that scares them the most.
-
Ok, the question has been asked about the good Captain, what about other "named" Characters? I have been wondering if there has been anything Solid about chracters like: Ryan Mercury (and the rest of Assets Inc), Tommy Talon, Tikki (Striper), Bandit, Argent, Kyle Teller (From Burning Bright), Jack Skater (and crew), Wolfgang Keis, and Doc Raven (and crew, LOVE Kid Stealth).
Ok, long list, but I have been re-reading all of my old books.
;)
-
Nothing mentioned on Jackpoint since it started. I'd assume Ryan Mercury is either with Nadja Daviar or is looking for her after her disappearance. Argent has become the Chuck Norris of the Sixth World (see other posts about him ;)). Striper had her cubs that she was raising, so I don't know if she still runs the shadows or not. Anyone's guess on the others.

Hmmm, does he have the beard? Cant be "Chuck Norris" without a beard, state law. I swear to gawd it is.
-
No, he doesn't. When Chuck Norris ascended to a higher plane ('cuz he couldn't die ;)), the beard was passed to Argent. However, the beard realized Argent was too awesome for facial hair and joined Chuck on the Metaplanes.

Actually, the beard is a forgotten Passion from the Earthdawn era. ;D

I just don't understand all the Norris worshiping around here, and among some friends of mine..... LOL!

*roundhouse kick*
-
Do not let the all powerful Chuck Norris hear that. His awesome power will hut me through the net.
-
And through time.
-
Bloody hell . . . I should never have introduced the concept of Chuck Norris = Argent ;) ::)
-
Bloody hell . . . I should never have introduced the concept of Chuck Norris = Argent ;) ::)
You didn't. It naturally occurred from Argent's awesomeness.
-
Well, there is (or was) a possible rival for Argent . . . Arctic White
Who also seems to have disappeared
-
When did it become 2004 again? ::)
-
They haven't really disappeared, it's just that Jackpoint is an invite-only Peer to Peer network, whereas Shadowland was open to all.
-
Yeah, and you saw what kind of riff-raff got onto Shadowland, IEs and Dragons? Seriously? That place might as well have been a public node. ;)

It *was* a public node. Remember all the email addresses instead of handles in the later years?

Of course it was a bit absurd what interest such personalities as Dunkelzahn, Hestaby, Celedyr, Masaru, Lofwyr, Nachtmeister, Schwartzkopf, Duke Jaromir of Pomorya, that Atlantean Foundation lady and Ehran the friggin Scribe had in some underground network. And yes, those all at some point left a comment.

Any more absurd than celebrities "tweeting" that they are filming a movie?

Yes. It would be a bit like those celebrities posting here on this forum, and revealing secrets here theyd never reveal elsewhere. This here is also an open forum, but still "closed" as in having a definite "border". Twitter hasnt, and besides most celebrity tweets are rather... inconsequential.
-
Shadowland was a "hidden forum" for criminals. If you could find it you could post. I'm just saying alot of important "people" found it and for some reason decided to post on it rather than just monitor it.
-
It was hidden in the beginning, but by the time of Crash 2.0, just about everyone could get into some part of it.
-
Also, some of them posted under alias (Hecate, especially) to spread information - or, more likely, misinformation.
Shadowland was a fairly powerful 'underground knowledge' resource. Consider that the Universal Brotherhood, Tir Tairngire, Deus and Aztlan all went full-out to stop information from being posted there, and the true nature of the Chicago disaster also originated from there.

[checking] Loose Alliances, pg 79. Also in Shadows of Asia, it's implied that Hecate knows the poster Elijah somewhat professionally.
Elijah is another of the Names I seem to have warm fuzzies for LOL. I'll have to count them up one day.

So its more like Wikileaks with a comments section. Take the participation of big players in such a thing to mean what you will.

Like governments trying to get the site shut down? ;)
@Longshot: Thanks, omae!

You could say that Shadowland became a place where the big players in the sixth world could take potshots at one another by posting "secret information" and pointing poor shadowrunners at their foes operations or conspiracies. I mean if I was a spy organization and wanted an operation shut down or disrupted. I would post information on it or part of it on Shadowland and see what shook loose. Hey I think I just got an idea for a game ;D

Or Shadowsea seeing as my group is playing in 2072.
-
I think it would be nice to see the Shadowsea format, how folks relate there. I know it got explained a bit, but for me I'd like to see where Shadowsea differs from JackPoint. Maybe it'll be in the Attitude book.

Doubt it, no Neo-@ ramblings.

I believe there's a connection between JackBNimble and Project Imago.
I believe there is a reference about Project Imago in regards to Celedyr and NeoNET and how it translates to AI/E-Ghosts. Given the contents of the adventure Imago, and how it affects Transys-Neuronet (which forms the NET in NeoNET), I'd tend to think that while Renraku may have some of the most cutting edge research into AIs, Celedyr may have a huge head start on E-Ghosts.

There's a scenario in Corporate Intrigue entitled 'Project Imago', dealing with just that...
-
That's the reference, thanks. :)
-
Actually, Red, Transys is the T in NeoNET, along with Novatech and Erika.
You know, if any e-ghosts escaped during the Corporate Intrigue adventure, might be fun to see if Cap was one of them...
-
There's that e-ghost out there who goes by "The Captain" he's got quite the live and let live attitude, plus the confidence of a good decker.

I do to, maybe just needs the write person to stumble upon him.

Slightly off-topic, but this thread has been resting a while... Does anyone know where I can find info about what Findler-Man is up to these days? Is he covered in Street Legends?
-
He is not in SL. He hasn't been seen in SR4.
-
I brought that up in a thread a while back, I think... It was generally assumed he must have gone down in the second crash. I wouldn't mind some detail there, someday, though. I always wanted to know more about him beyond him being a sam with a LOT of street smarts and knowledge. :)
-
I would very much like to see a Fallen Legends book.

I'll second this one, but mainly because I want to see stats on The Captain.

Cthulhu eats 1d4 players per round... No, wait, wrong game. As much as I would love, love, love to see a Street Legends style book to cover the fallen heroes and villains of yesteryear, update the old timers for the new decade, or just teach these young `uns today with their ork`n`roll and conservativ ehaircuts just how aweseom Ghost, Dodger, and Sally were putting stats to some of these guys runs into the old adage in tabletop RPGs, handed down from one GM to the next like a well-worn set of dice: "If you stat it, they will kill it."
On a tangental note, I've long wanted to put together a "yesteryear" sort of book, that would let people use the 4th Edition ruleset for a game set in the original 2050s era. With cyberdecks, cd-roms, and mohawks... elf synthpop soundtrack sold seperately.
-
I would lay down cash in a hurry for a Fallen Legends book.
-
If only the forums actually represented Shadowrun consumers.
-
We're the section of consumers most likely to religiously buy evrything, however. And critique it mercilessly

Yeah, I've noticed. :P

Not such a worry when all the characters featured are already dead ;-)

Trogdor the Trog Troll Mage is starting to grow on me.
Some characters just stick with me. Too bad I never get to play them!

Can anyone say cloning:p
-
And anyway, if the things players did was always canon, Richard Villers would be dead twenty times over and I'd be dating his daughter. ;)
-
I sort of know what you mean. My one attempt (so far) at an SR magic-type was a character based on the Troll Combat Mage pretty much straight out of the SR3 book; I played him with a bad Arnie accent and one of the other players (the femme with the Bat shaman goth vampire-wannabe) absolutely loved it (another one hated it, but he played a troll Snake Shaman who reckoned my guy was borderline psychopath).
We were all attending a concert in the Ork Underground, btw . . .
-
I would definately pay hard cred for dowloads (hell make them PDFs if your worried about sales) for both a rules conversion and a Street legends: Fallen heroes
-
Again I have to agree a Street Legends: Fallen Heroes or Villains would be sweet!
-
I think a straight-up sourcebook on playing SR4 in the SR2/SR3 eras would be awesome.
