Let's say my character has like 2 millions to spend. He buys a Fairlight Paladin (page 63, Data Trails) and the ComPac-Esprit General (page 105, Run & Gun) and decides to abuse the Device Modification rules (page 66, Data Trails). The General Device Rating is added to his Paladin's Firewall and Data processing, making it 15 15 8 8. He adds the Encryption cyberprogram, and starts modifying the attribute array according to the Device Modification rules, pouring all attribute points into the same attribute, ending up with an array of 46(47 from encryption) 0 0 0. He slaves all his guns and stuff to it, confident that he will never have to worry about hackers again.

And yes I know, no sane GM would ever allow this. It's simply a thought experiment. What are your thoughts? ^^

Unless otherwise noted, a device can only have one modification.
Eh? ::)

Not a native English speaker here, but does that mean you can't redo the mod? My interpretation has been that you can't have multiple different mods.

From reading the "Modify Matrix Attribute", it would appear that you can decrease one to increase one other only one time.

When it says "unless otherwise noted, a device can only have one modification" what it's referring to is Add a Matrix Attribute specifically. It's the only one that says "The Increase a Matrix Attribute modification can later be added to this modification."

Since none of the others have a clause in their description allowing for stacking, then they can only be applied once.

Which means you could take a standard issue Commlink, add Sleaze 1, then increase to Sleaze 2, and that's it. No further modifications.

Or in this case, you could modify a single point from somewhere, to the Firewall, and that's it. Firewall +1, some other -1, done. At best you can get your Paladin 9 + Pi-Tac 6 + Modify 1 = Firewall 16. Until you start loading up software.

The Matrix is everywhere. It is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work…when you go to church…when you pay your taxes.

Which is still great Firewall, but, you spend 2 million to get it.  It better be good.  Even teams like Ares Firewatch or the Red Samurai probably don't spring for that much.
I'm Madpath Moth on reddit (and other sites).  Feel free to PM me errata questions!
Jeeze.  It would almost sound stupid until you realize we're talking about an immortal elf clown sword fighting a dragon ghost in a mall.

Now if you're trying to hack a G.O.D. operative's deck, you might come across that (probably some here-so-far unknown device with a 16 being the LOWEST matrix attribute in their case).
