Title: Miniatures in Shadowrun
Post by: Namikaze on <03-16-14/0215:59>
So I'm curious about the world of miniatures.  I know that there are a LOT of miniature-based games out there, and I know that several of those games take place either in the real world, or a real enough facsimile to be called "real world."  However, I don't know a lot of specifics about which miniatures would convert well into Shadowrun.

I am aware that there was a company that was making miniatures expressly for Shadowrun use - do they still produce them?  Are there any miniatures or miniatures series that might work well for Shadowrun?

Thanks.

Have a quick search mate, we had a thread on here for exactly this showcasing great minis.
Infinitythegame.com is a good place to start, some of theirs are brilliant!

Way Back When(tm), Ral Partha made a line of Shadowrun miniatures of varying quality. (And I don't care what you say, you'll have to pry the cigar-chomping, Panther-firing troll from my cold, dead fingers.) Iron Wind Miniatures seems to have the old Ral Partha molds and continues to produce them:

Some of the minis for Infinity could certainly work.

And there will be some sort of miniatures coming out for Sprawl Gangers.

Thanks, Csjarrat.  I did a quick search on the forums and I did indeed find a useful thread.  I'm going to link the thread and some of the other things that I found as a result, so that if others want to find the info they can do so a little more easily.  Belker, I appreciate your link.  I am also looking forward to Sprawl Gangers, as I think that might be the best possible option.  I want for Catalyst to be able to partner up with someone to make a line of new models.  I understand that the IP is a mess with this regard, but I'm hoping that with the introduction of Sprawl Gangers that this means the IP is more settled down and less confusing.

We've started using them in our Missions games, and while it slows things down a tad, we have found them invaluable for helping us picture combat.

yea, we use an erasable matt and minis every time we can!

Makes seeing what is going on and understanding the battle field much much easier, and cuts down on little arguments such as visibility, line of sight, and cover.

Is now live, I'd suggest checking it out.  Really nice set up.

I have a ton of the old RalParth / Iron Wind minis but sometimes you just want that customized look & the Hero Forge folks are onto something IMHO.

My only complaint so far is no SMG/AR in the weapons sections, but they just opened up & will be expanding more stuff in the future.

Not yet, but I was playing w/ the options quite a bit this week.
I'm thinking I will wait to see what they do next because as cool as they are, I could tweak them more if they had some added guns & such.

The coolest thing about Hero Forge IMO is that you can mix and match from everything they have.  You can take an axe from fantasy, a duster from Western, a futuristic pistol from Sci-Fi, etc. and combine it all together.

Wait, I take it back.  The coolest thing is that you can do this (https://www.heroforge.com/load_config=35162)!

I've created a few templates for Shadowrun characters using Hero Forge. Here are some Street Samurais (http://fondationdraco.free.fr/?p=1417) you can use as a basis ofr your own characters :) (follow the link and click on each picture to open the corresponding Hero Forge model).
I tried to have a variety of poses and gear. Do not hesitate to change stuff and have fun :)
Currently doing Orks is tricky because of the lack of tusks.

I've used a few minis from various lines, with some kitbashing, to get them to look just right.  The biggest problem is the drones.  Infinity seems to have a good selection of drones, but there's just not enough out there.  I am really looking forward to seeing how Sprawl Gangers handles this - it looks like the drones will be part of the rigger unit rather than a separate unit.

I think the Infinity line is great for corp troops and mercs, a bit too hi-tech for actual runners though. Still some great pieces (love the biker girl, would make a great Ancient).

Here are a few more Hero Forge templates (http://fondationdraco.free.fr/?p=1422), this time for Deckers. Again, I tried to have very different characters in terms of pose and gear. The Human Decker is basically Jake Armitage from the SR video games, the Elf one is a real pro, while the Ork Decker is quite a literal Matrix Cowgirl :)

No cyberpunk per se yet, but you can obtain some nice results by mixing together the East Asian, Modern and Sci-fi themes.

We have folded noir into "modern" and cyberpunk into "sci-fi" to keep things clean. We will be continuing to expand on our offerings in all categories as time goes on, for sure.

Intrigued by the "POD" offerings starting to emerge, and extremely hopeful for Sprawl Gangers...almost too many options out there ;)

I felt inspired and came up with some Magic Users templates for Hero Forge.

Some of them are a bit... unconventional, but that's the beauty of SR, the possibilities are infinite :)
Now I wish Hero Forge had a bigger variety of options when it comes to magic/spell effects...

This Dwarf Adept is actually based on my own character, Bran McMorn (the name was of course based on R.E. Howard's Bran Mak Morn). I always found the idea of a Dwarf being a Physical adept and a martial art expert was such an awesome character concept  ;D

As usual, follow this link (http://fondationdraco.free.fr/?p=1476) and click on the pics to access the templates, and feel free to modify them at your leisure :)

I actually received it and returned it for a refund due to it being out of scale (30mm vs. 28mm). It was just too big next to my circa 1994 shadowrun miniatures which are mostly "true" 28mm not "heroic" 28mm (really 30mm).

The surface finish was not great, certainly not as good as a metal mini, and that was with the "high detail" resin material.

Regardless I was impressed enough that I decided to adjust the toon's size and reorder.
I'll post some photos when i get the revised model.

I also have to post some photos of the rest of my collection some time; i've gathered all kinds of cool ones from various different manufacturers around the world.
I just received some spider gun drones that are super cute, can't wait to throw them against my players hehe.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned HeroClix (or any other of the Clix lines).  A little kitbashing with these things and you can come up with some amazing Shadowrun miniatures.  First, you need to get them off the 1 1/2" wide bases -- easy enough with an Xacto Knife.  For trolls, select the bigger bruiser types and switch heads with a horned figure, like Loki.  Or use tiny amounts of Sculpey to create horns.  A little paint and voila!  Brand new plastic Shadowrun mini.

I picked up a bag of plastic 28mm toy soldiers off of Amazon to work for minion gangers and cops.  They're made by Rhode Island Novelty.

For scenery, I tend to use LEGO bricks or wooden blocks.  LEGO bricks, especially minifigure-scale, are great for drones.  I design drones using Lego Digital Designer, then pick up individual bricks from BrickLink.  Only need a few bricks?  Don't forget to grab transparent bricks for bases for flying drones.  Good way to pad an order to their minimum size.

As far as battlemats go, I use a Chessex hex-grid mat I picked up in the 80's for Champions.  I use the hex-grid to make a visual split from the square grids my D&D players are used to, to drive home the point that THIS IS NOT D&D.

Our resident crafty person does the same with hero clix to great effect. His runner food truck he put together from toys is awesome. When you look inside you see a soda machine pulled away from a wall attached to the back of the soda machine are guns, lots of guns.

here's a photo of the heroforge mini I sent back for being out of scale.
The figure to the left is a 1990's era Grenadier Shadowrun mini (still being produced by EM4 miniatures in the UK)
http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/REBELS.html

The one on the right is an infinity miniature.

It's hard to tell in the photo but the heroforge mini is significantly bigger than the other two, the miniature's head is about twice the size of the infinity model and it's height is the same despite the fact he is crouching.

I adjusted the heroforge mini's height and reprinted him, we'll see how close he is to scale when I receive it.

FYI here's are some links to places where you can find many of the old Shadowrun 1990's figures still being produced and some new minis that work well for Srun.

good drones from anvil industries:

best drones around are the Ground Zero Games drones from their 15mm stargunt line (work's great for the smaller drones in srun, their spider drones are awesome):

The problem with most of these is cost.  HeroForge is the biggest transgressor; I am not paying 25 pounds (around USD40, I think) for one miniature.  Yeah, it's a custom mini, but I am not made of money.  That's why I suggested HeroClix; you can get most of these from bargain bins at your FLGS, if they do that sort of thing.

Another option if you're worried about price is old Star Wars Miniatures figures, though you won't find any figures for trolls or dwarves (unless that Rat Shaman dwarf in your game really looks like a Jawa or an Ewok).  Clone troopers and stormtroopers make for good security forces, though.

Another option is Reaper Bones; they're cheaper than metal miniatures and do have many options for sci-fi/modern settings.  (Though painting is required, and some minor kitbashing may be needed to turn a larger figure into a troll.)

A LONG time ago, in the 90s, a toy line called XPanders had a product with 20 pre-painted (well, each figure was in one base plastic color -- olive or black -- and had little splashes of trim in red or brown, respectively, so they were kind of pre-painted) figures.  Four of them, unfortunately, were molded in driver/operator sitting positions, so weren't really useful for miniatures unless you could put them in a vehicle.  But they were cheap, and made great corporate security goons too.  You might be able to find these at vintage stores, or garage sales, or eBay.

If you're looking for vehicles, surprise surprise, Hot Wheels makes a lot of 28mm scale figures.  They may look a little small, but yeah, they're the same scale most miniatures are crafted in.

I think the key with Hero Forge is that its not for a bunch of generic NPCs.
Its for your favorite PC that no other mini has ever looked quite like.
The character you've been playing for 5-10 years that you have every stat memorized on & have loads of stories about this time or that.
I read something from their designers & that kind of thing is what made them decide to do what they do.

Hokay the replacement heroforge miniature arrived today.
Looking scaled better, here he is primed and based.

I think those vents must be blowing his duster up, a la Marilyn Monroe?

I'll post more once he's painted.

Very nice, actually.  I think the quality on the faces and other little details is better than I was expecting, but not as good as the model on the website.  That's to be expected though, especially depending on how much primer was used, the weight of the paints, etc.

here's a few shots of the wip.
Despite careful handling I managed to drop it today and he broke at the ankles.
A spot of superglue and back in business but does validate what others have been saying about the durability.
Detail and surface finish is not too bad but not as crisp or smooth as a modern metal or injection molded plastic miniature.
Some areas have better detail than others, the small automatic in his left hand has a nice silencer and the ejection port for the slide is nicely detailed along with the trigger guard and grip point at the back of the slide.
The tabi-style shoes are detailed pretty nicely too.

I really like the poses they offer, this one was the "heavy weapon" pose I think.

HeroForge has added a lot of new items allowing to come even closer to what Shadowrun characters should look like (for instance, you can now give proper ork teeth to your character).
But some of the old accessories disappeared or were updated, and as a result, I had to update my previous templates (http://fondationdraco.fr/category/aides-de-jeu/heroforge/) and generate some new links.
While I was at it, I created a couple of new models, for criminals and gangers (http://fondationdraco.fr/2017/02/12/hero-forge-gangers-et-criminels/).
As always, feel free to use these and modify them to fit your needs :)

I have only one problem with Hero Forge. I can't get my character to put his cane down and look like he's actually using it. I'm like "Michael, you need that cane. Put it down!"

Hobbes painted, not quite close up ready, but looks good on the table.  My painting muscles were sorely out of shape, been a decade or so since my 40k days.

Heroforge.  Anyone tried the lower quality materials?  I may have to give it a whirl next time.

I noticed the same thing & I found it odd that they removed some stuff.
I really liked the AK47 they had but its not available now except as a "Back" accessory.

They are a bit expensive, but some of the Fragged Empire miniatures (https://www.fantasywelt.de/navi.php?jtl_token=8f8bddd3463bb118abe209be0658d73d&suchausdruck=fragged+empire+miniatures) would make perfect runners.

The FM designs are pretty sweet. I believe the casting/production was handled by Prodos (who also did the minis for the Shadowrun Chronicles KS).
