I recently picked up the First Edition Shadowrun Core rulebook, mostly for the fluff, and I noticed something a little...  Interesting.  It mentions that at one point (in retaliation for the Night of Rage, an event that occured 2 years previously), a Great Dragon (Sirrurg, supposedly) attacked a commercial jet in 2041 and was held off for several minutes by a 'heroic passenger using sorcery' (before the craft was taken down, no survivors).  My question is; who is this magician?  Approximately thirty years after the Awakening, and they were holding off a Great Dragon with their skills in magic by themselves?  Given the power of this individual, was it really retaliation for the Night of Rage, or the dragon targeting someone of the plane?

The mage has never been named, it was shown he was using an assumed name for boarding and the video footage of the passengers boarding the plane had some anomalies.

Whenever the camera panned across one particular group of passengers, the image blurred momentarily. They checked the system and everything checked out.

So it is 50/50 that Sirrug may have been making a statement or was targeting someone specifically. 

Unless someone has a daypass to whatever place the Dragons That Be put Sirrug away for his time out or the Great kept a journal somewhere, we may never know.

     Sirrug has been a big baddie since 1st Edition, no surprise.  The mage in question may have been one of those  immortal draco-children, (either elf or human), perhaps one of the 'down-time' dragon hunters mentioned elsewhere in the books.

Much of Sirrurg's early work was indeed hunting the dragonslayer cults, which is why the dragons (even Big D) gave him a silent nod of approval. It talks about this in Dragons of the Sixth World, I believe. At any rate, Sirrurg's actions had always been at an 'acceptable' level until he wiped Cali off the map, which springboarded the whole dragon civil war, as well as nations rushing to make anti-dragon weapons. A similar example in real life would be the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. Al Qaeda had been a threat for decades prior to that, but their actions had always been something that weren't on a level to galvanize a massive response from the American public. Sure, bombing a couple barracks or a ship is bad, and we lobbed some cruise missiles at some of his favorite stuff, but it wasn't until 9/11 that Americans decided they were going out for blood. That attack was so over the top, so horrific, that everyone stopped and said that was too far. It didn't stop terrorism, naturally, but it made everyone want to take the fight straight to them. When Sirrurg wiped out Cali, the same thing happened, and the only reason the other dragons acted was to keep one of their own from being butchered by Aztlan.
