The Next Shadowrun Novel

Deniable Assets, by Mel Odom, is the next Shadowrun novel and its just about off to the printer. Below is the fantastic cover by Victor Moreno, as well as a description for this newest run in the shadows

Shadowrunner Katar Hawke knows the score on the streets. Every job is to be executed swiftly and simply–no muss, no fuss, and with as little help as possible. But when an extraction of seemingly ordinary grad student from a Central American dig goes south in a big way, Hawke has to keep them both alive while he figures out what he’s stumbled into–and how to get out of it in one piece.

But nothing about this shadowrun is remotely ordinary. The student, Rachel Gordon, has unearthed an artifact linking the Sixth World and the long gone, magical Second World. The discovery sets off a lethal chain reaction of feuding megacorporations and cold-blooded killers who will do anything to ge their hands on her and what she knows.

Caught in the hardest of hard places, Hawke must break his cardinal rule and assemble his own shadow running team to survive what’s coming at him. But in the end it all comes down to one question: will he sell out Rachel to the highest bigger, or join her on a quest that could change the face of the Sixth World forever?

Enjoy!

Love Mel's work. Great to have him back in the Shadows. His netrunner stuff was fun but he needed to take another run against the corps.

LOST SECRETS ARE THE DEADLIEST SECRETS OF ALL...

I got this yesterday and made the mistake of saying, "Hey, I'll just read a few pages this afternoon." Well, I couldn't put it down and whenever I had to, I was ready to get back to it. It's a good story with plenty of Shadowrun flavor and feel. Nice job, Mel Odom, I'm ready for the next book, please . . .

Just by reading the intro, I knew I had to stay away until spring vacation. But it is just so darn tempting to get it now :'(

Just finished the book and I find it to be good but not great. The first two thirds were awesome but then it loses star a bit because it feels like it simply more of the same. Maybe the ending feels a little rushed? Another thing that lowers it in my book is that the characters seem a little bit too much over the top and infallible.

But still it's a good book.

Finished it yesterday. It was enjoyable but at times it felt like the writer wasn't really sure where he was taking the story until he figured it out in the last chapters. At least that's how I felt. For instance, re-reading the beginning of the book, the fact that
the shadowman was Lofwyr all along
doesn't feel right.

But I was relieved that contrary to what the summary made me fear with its mention of the Second World,
It didn't retcon Earthdawn's Fourth World or anything
One thing that annoyed me a bit however was
the amount of knowledge mere runners and average joes had of previous worlds. Some things they encounter during the story should have blown their minds. But they were like "oh yeah, it's from the Fourth World, null sheen omae." They seem to be a bit too savvy of these things, you know?
Still a good book, but as PiXeL01 said, not great as far as I'm concerned. Your mileage may vary, of course :)

Hmm.. odd that when I use the search store feature for Tampa none of the 5 B&N stores has it in stock.

May be it only being offered through the online store?

Maybe, but if you can get the shipping covered, about the best price that I've found.

Marzhin, Mel seems to have a habit of dropping those references among runners quite easily.  Same thing happens in the Hong Kong enovel for SRR:HK.  Enjoyable enough read there too but the moment the runners start bandying those references about, it took me out of it some.

Hopefully those references are not quite so blatant when I read Deniable Assets.

Though with the Artifact Rush arc from 4th edition, I might be willing to allow for runners to have more knowledge regarding that if they are essentially elite but not the common street runner.
