Title: Sprawl Wilds - Karma rewards
Post by: Fedifensor on <09-11-13/0125:54>
I'm prepping Sprawl Wilds to run the modules for a new group of Missions players, and noticed that the Karma awards under SR5 are lower than the guidelines listed on pg 376 of the rulebook, as well as the two Season 5 missions I've played thus far (which gave 6 and 9 Karma, or an average of 7.5).  For comparison, the awards in Sprawl Wilds range between 3 and 5 Karma maximum (since the other 1-3 Karma only apply to SR4 roleplaying awards).  Manhunt stood out as being quite low compared to the guidelines (barring exceptional play, the players only get 2 Karma despite the difficulty).  Is this intentional?  Am I missing something?

Bull made a correction post for that one:

Just did a quick run through of Sprawl Wilds, and it's 6, 6, 8, and 6 max Karma.  I think I see the problem though.

The adventures themselves were originally written for SR4 (and most were done during season 3 even), and as such have the "Characters earn 1-3 karma for Missions goals, and 1-3 for good roleplaying" stuff.  If taken at face value, this means that yes, under SR5 they would technically cap out at 3 rather than 6.  However, you need to factor in the difficulty of the Mission and a couple other factors, which should raise the value back up to 6.  It's worded a little ambiguously, I admit, but man, I like to keep a tight reign on my players karma and nuyen, but even I'm not that tight-fisted! :)

Have your GM refer to the SR5 Karma Awards.

Does Firing Line have the same issue?

Unfortunately I don't have Firing Line so couldn't say.

I think it does. I'll have to check for sure later, though.

Yeah, same general guidelines apply for both.  Generally speaking, add 3 karma to the plot-point rewards for difficulty, which should result in 6-8 points per adventure.

Here's my best guess at the GM rewards, given Bull's ruling and the Missions FAQ...

Sprawl Wilds:
Manhunt - 7 Karma, 4200+? Nuyen (not sure how the bounty fits into the GM reward)
Carbon Copy - 6 Karma, 10600 Nuyen
Ashes - 8 Karma, 6000 or 7600 Nuyen*
Humanitarian Aid - 6 Karma, 5500 or 6600 Nuyen*

Firing Line:
Lost Islands Found - 8 Karma, 9400 or 8900 Nuyen*
Deconstructing Patriots - 7 Karma, [8000/12000/16000] Nuyen
Congressional Comspiracies - 6 Karma, 14000 or 12000 Nuyen*
Stormcrow Undone - 6 Karma, 7000 Nuyen

* The module and the Picking Up The Pieces section have different amounts.

One thing to note with Nuyen rewards...  they're a little all over the place for these.  That's in part because these were initially released during the tail end of Season 3, and the nuyen rewards were a little wonky and random back then (And were Table Rating based).

Quick question - does the GM reward count as a mission, for purposes of how long I can spend between missions to train?
